Donki Korin by Usamaru Furuya, Or maybe The World Is Mine
by Hideki Arai. All the picks on that poll besides Dragonball or maybe One Piece don't really deserve to there….Especially Death Note.

That's funny as hell. How does he regenerate a wristband? Oh, I love Dragon Ball.
BTW RobbyBevard is completely correct about Berserk, this Revenge stuff is wearing thin. Enough with the little girl and the damn feather sword. Every panel with them in it annoy me.
At the moment, One Piece is the best for me. There is rarely a chapter that I don't like. Overall, I'm very happy about how One Piece turned out. It's getting better and better.

Should ragequit.
Well, my favorite manga of all time is Slam Dunk. It has entertaining characters, great artwork, and is remarkably true to the sport (except for the fact that it has Japanese teenagers dunking and generally being good at basketball, which just doesn't happen). But really the most stunning part is the ending. It ends on an incredibly abrupt and unexpected note for a shounen series, and essentially Sakuragi realizes that he is no longer playing basketball to impress anyone, but rather he's fallen in love with the game.
See. I've actually seen real-life basketball fans complain about Slam Dunk! not getting to the actual BASKETBALL quick enough to get them into the series–people complained about it starting with the Sakuragi's half-cocked attempts at romance and too many fights before they actually start having serious games like many other shonen sports series. Basically, they complained about the story having too much other stuff going on before it locks into the actual basketball, but that's part of what hooked me into the series. Well, that and the comedy.
Most sports series just don't do that for me. Or balance the light-hearted stuff with the serious action. You usually just get some jokes during the "cool down" stories before or after games/matches. Anyway, the ending was rushed, because of the series' forced ending, but I was surprised by how much I liked it anyway and how it tied up the story really well with that final game.
For all its great character work, depth and detail, at THIS point Berserk is little more than an R-rated Inuyasha, complete with lack of plot progression and character development and no end in sight.
I completely agree with this. I find it slightly less obnoxious since it's MUCH shorter, but still…
despite what i've said before there really is no "best" manga since it's all just a matter of opinion since we can't see the future and the future may hold titles that could even out rank the best of now.

Ao Kiji, I read Hajime no Ippo and it has entire volumes without any boxing. That does not make it a slice of life manga.
iam shocked to see "monster" just with 1 vote  i had to choose OP but just 1 person who rly thinks that this is an awesome work…nahhh maybe just for the most of us second choice

You never fucking learn do you.
Ok people, I've just finished reading through Nausicaä
And I have to say it loud and proudly:
Fuck this poll.
there is no "best" manga
there is no "best" manga

That's…his wrist...

Never did I state that it was.
Can we please not rehash this argument?
SD being slice-of-life was never my argument.
And yeah, considering this poll covers almost entirely a single genre of manga, I don't think you can say one is THE BEST. How the hell do you compare something like MONSTER to something Azumanga Daioh??
You can say whether something is of higher QUALITY than most, but there can't really be one overall greatest with so many different types in play. It's like saying what's the best FOOD.

What they need is to combine them. The best manga would clearly be a cute slice-of-life series starring a bunch of high-school girls…. who are serial killers!
:)
The best manga would be a cross between Berserk and Hamtaro. Uber violence and character death and demons running about… cuuuuute little innocent hamsters... with swords.

that may be the best "now" but what if something comes out a good decade later and is shown to actually bet better than what? i'm sorry but I never believe that there is the best: videogame, game system, movie, book, computer, song, band or whatever could have a "best" in it's category by saying it's the best is making a bold statement it's saying that nothing, even in the future will rival against it.

Well when you get a time machine you can totally make this argument, but for now we kind of live in a thing called the present.

You can also take in pioneering, how ahead of its time it was, and how it changed everything else, and how it stacks up against everything else. The time and place it hits is a factor.
Citizen Kane, Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, Godfather (1 AND 2!) and Lawrence of Arabia make any competant top 10 movie list, even though they're all 30-60 year old movies, because they ARE the best. They can never be remade or matched for what it is, they're too defining of the times, the very pinnacle of what the art form could do at the time, or even against now. They're not everybody's movie, and they're not perfect, but for the pioneering, scope, story, characters, and sense of place, the iconography, what they accomplished at the time they were made, what they pioneered or did better than anyone else, that very very few have been able to match up to in 60 years since! They will never be matched. If another movie comes along thats worthy of being added to the list, it will simply add to the list, it won't diminish what any of those films have done.
Opposit eof that, Star Wars is, at best, a B movie. But as far as changing the nature of the genre, influence, and imagination, you can not argue what it has done or that it has inspired the 30 years of filmamking and animation since. For all its flaws and probelms (and there are a LOT of them) it is so well beloved and does so many things right, you can't argue with how good it is.
Same goes with comics. When theres a certain level of quality, even if its not your personal taste, you have to be able to admit that quality is there.
Watchmen (the comic) created new storytelling methods and changed the genre of superhero comics forever. It might be antiquainted now since everyone else has ripped it off, but tis stands as what it is. (Of course, the brilliance in watchmen WASN'T the dark superhero story, but the storytelling, which is what a lot of people overlook…)
Romeo and Juliet is an AWFUL love story, its more a lust story. But there is no other single couple in history you can point to that is as well known or instantly recognized as THE symbol of a love story. (MAYBE Antony and Cleopatra. MAYBE. And they were real!)
No, you can't say that a single story will be the best at what it is forever. Because others will come and build off of it, and personal opinion is always what it is. However, you can judge a story by what it did at the time it came out compared ot what came before it, how its held up since. How much it resonates with an audience at large. The creativity, competance and complexity of a story, even over multiple rereads. These things can be determined immediatley, even before history has had a chance to judge them.

hmmm I must say you make valid points but it's still not going to change my opinion that there is no best just something that came at the right place and at the right time and changed everything.
If I were to choose a best manga i'd have to read every single manga series out there and than I would put it down by category first age group than genre but since that's likely not going to happen i'll just keep personal favorites to myself .
And if this thread included american comics into it than I would have a best (despite me saying earlier that I don't believe in a "best" anything, I can contradict myself can't I ?). Watchmen, From Hell (yes there was a graphic novel) and Sin City series but that's just my personal opinion.
Edit: add V for Vendetta to that list.
@Tigerlilly, OMFG! It's like the Gunslinger girl videogames but…in ENGLISH!!
And PLAYABLE!!
Romeo and Juliet is an AWFUL love story, its more a lust story.
I'm glad someone else felt this way.
I agree with your post completely, but I do think that trailblazing, in itself, is not a strong enough reason for something to be considered one of the best for all time. When I watched Citizen Kane, it's enjoying, but not nearly as impressive storywise or even in scale by today's standards. It was a paradigm of film-making for the time, but today it just doesn't hold up as something that strikes me as amazing. Now I very recently watched Gone with the Wind and everything STILL holds up in comparison to movies of today.
You could be considered the best for being the standard of a genre with something like Star Wars.
The best American comic is Eightball. "God how I hate superheroes…"
Shakespeare is mostly renowned for his writing style, the whole prose aspect of his dialogue.
Not for plots.
Hamlet was better anyway.
Twelfth Night forever, Romeo & Juliet never.
@Deltron:

Practically all of Shakespeare's plays' plots were ripped off other works anyway.
If i'm not correct didn't shakespear originally made up the 7 main plots used in allmost every single story told?

That sounds like a bullshit claim. Mainly I'm always skeptical of claims like that for simply suggesting that conflicts which exist in real life are somehow a persons creation to put into fiction.
People aren't copying someones lead when they write about a romance, bullshit, they're writing off the fact that romance is something everyone experiences (or wishes too lol) in real life.
But I doubt it even in it's own terms.
One could say he typified fiction, taking the core story elements of different types of stories, combining them, and simplifying their plots. While he certainly did not create the templates for fiction, they're often used as though they were because they brought everything before them into a new level of coherency. And the man was brilliant in his development of characters and prose, without a doubt the greatest achievement to literature we've had so far.
And yes, the Romeo and Juliet romance was not even really that romantic; Hancock would make far greater sacrifices for Luffy after knowing him for about the same of time, and we know how poetic and moving their relationship is.
Shakespeare was not great for his plots. He was great for his characterizatio, style and new innovative literary techniques that are still used to this date. And he also invented half the English language including the term house-hold words.
Dragonball is widely known as a great series, it's the best.
@Deltron:

Just stating what I had heard.

It also known as being overrated in some circles.
one piece of course
Without dragonball…one piece never existed think about that my friends.
Without dragonball…one piece never existed think about that my friends.
Dosen't make DB better.
Well, out of those choices, I think the obvious choise is One Piece. But then again, there is also this one other really awesome anime, Vandread, that I really liked…
djak;hdfka; it's a hard choice between those. D:
1 One Piece
2 Slam Dunk
3 GTO
DB is shit….
DB is the shit….
I fixed your typo for you.
And yes it is. I agree. Dragonball is defining, word renown and great fun with memorable and likeable character along with invigorating action sequences. Its not fantatic but it was incredibly good at what it set out to do, being the base standard for pretty much this entire generation of shonen manga artists.
Y'know, I've always found it ironic that this topic title mentions how this isn't supposed to be a popularity contest, yet the topic creator set up a poll. I don't think it's supposed to work that way.
1. One Piece/Hunter X Hunter
2. Berserk
3. JoJo
4. Rurouni Kenshin
5. Dragon Ball
Something like that.
1 One Piece
2 Slam Dunk
3 GTODB is shit….
How someone can rank One Piece first while saying Dragon Ball is shit is completely beyond me. It may be better than Dragon Ball but dismissing its roots is disrespectful and retarded.
personally this thread continues to amuse me due to just how many people in here seem to have only read shonen. Spread your horizons folks.
Hikaru no Go is not my favorite, but I give it points for getting me to learn how to play the game and be interested in it. Thats quite the achievement. Thus…
Hikaru no Go is the Greatest Manga of All Time... to motivate people to learn and play Go.
Wait, I forgot Monster.
1. One Piece/Hunter X Hunter
2. Berserk/Monster
3. JoJo/Hokuto no Ken
4. Rurouni Kenshin
5. Vagabond
6. Dragon Ball
Shonen's really the most enjoyable of the genres which is why most people have only read it. I've read a few senin like Berserk, Monster, Vagabond, etc. Anyone know of a senin series about a man who got a hole drilled in his head and is able to see like demons or something like that? I can't remember the name but it was pretty cool.
One Piece of course!
I also like Bleach (earlier volumes) and Soul Eater.. There are a lot of other good manga out there just like anime but these stick out to me most :)
