No, they don't have any plans on making any more past Vol. 12.
New official Viz media topic V2.
-
-
Well, instead of discussing it, let's email, tweet, facebook, etc. to Viz and let them know we want One Piece on the cover for when they reach the beginning of Part 2 and to appear more frequently on covers of future issues.
-
They should put Guyver on the front
Then everyone'd buy it.

ohh ko thanks for the info
I wish they did make 3 volumes in one cuz everytime I go looking for volume 13 and 14 they're always out of stock -

Just because there's no color pages, doesn't mean the whole magazine is going to stop production.
Do you how many people like Naruto and Bleach!?I know lots of people like Naruto and BLEACH, but consider how the magazine has diminished in both quality and quantity
The two things that made this magazine great for me were: Color spreads and Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG cards, now they don't publish the color spreads and I haven't played YGO! in a long time, yet I will concede the magazine still has the appeal for the YGO TCG gamers (And other TCG gamers like Naruto) when a promo card is given in the issue. Also, I was talking about actual Shonen Jump america sales, IIRC back when it began it sold pretty damn well but times are changing, IMO the purpose of the magazine has been fullfilled, after all its just a boost to promote manga.
From Wikipedia:
Targeted towards young adult males, the first issue required three printings to meet consumer demand, with over 300,000 copies sold. It was awarded the ICv2 "Comic Product of the Year" award in December 2002, and has continued to enjoy high sales with a monthly circulation of 215,000 in 2008. Approximately half of its circulation comes from subscriptions rather than store sales. That was from 2008 and since the magazine is like a big pamplet anyway (Like if you paid to watch a big tv commercial) I think if the sells don't drop too much it will continue, but does anyone have actual sales as of 2011? Because back in 2008 the magazine was still very well packaged IIRC, it was like in 2009 that it began to lose its quantity of pages and with that even less series.. :(
-
The magazine did not start to loose pages in 2009. They reduced the page count in 2011. This hasn't been an ongoing trend. In 2011 alone they reduced page count from an average of about 370 to about 280 or so on average. There were a few issues in 2010 with over 400 pages. They also reduced the number of issues in 2011. There was no gradual decline for the magazine, they reformatted starting in January 2011 with less series, less pages, no color spreads, and only 10 issues per year. Don't make it into something like a long drawn out decline in quality from back in 2009. It has only been the past year that this has occurred.

Check this out!

It's gotta be right-to-left. That's gonna be tough for me. -
Was there ever any official word on why Viz dropped Zatch Bell? Was it poor sales? I ask because I am reading threw the series right now and I would like to know if it's possible if they will ever finish it off. They recently finished off Rave Master, correct? Does ZB stand a reasonable chance of getting similar treatment?

Viz had nothing to do with Rave Master…?

My bad I meant 2010, I could have swear that it was back from 2009 though LOL.

Jun-Jul. 2011. 296You can definetly see that 2010 lost lots of pages and IMO quality too, and it has been losing quality IMO since far back.. Back when it began it was a lot cooler, it had interesting articles and it wasn't just manga.. I know that it has articles right now too but I miss Manga Explorer :(
Also, its interesting that in 2011 of the 5 issues 4 have had YGO! Cards, I just find it funny how back when the magazine started it was something special.. Heck IIRC in the first year of the magazine only Blue Eyes White Dragon was on the magazine, then more and more cards were on the magazines (From like 8% of the issues to around 20% and now 80%..) Hopefully the cards alone can keep up the buyers because it seems like the YGO! Cards are the only good thing of SJ now a days.

@City_Lights.
1.- Rave Master being a Kodansha property was first published by Tokyopop, they lost all licenses of Kodansha and they are defunct too, anyway Kodansha USA will finish Rave Master.
2.- Zatch Bell! in Japan was published by Shogakukan which is one of the two owners of VIZ media (The other is Shueisha, owner of the JUMP imprint) anyway the author didn't really end well with Shogakukan thus he parted ways with them and ended Zatch Bell, that was because they (Shogakukan) had lost art that was property of Zatch Bell's mangaka and other thingys.. He is currently working on Kodansha IIRC and has a serialization and Zatch Bell is being reprinted in a Bunkoban version with new covers..
As for Zatch Bell being finished in the States by Viz.. Its a matter of time and licensing, sadly its doubtful since Viz is owned by both Sueisha and Shogakukan and now Makoto Raiku (Zatch Bell mangaka) works in the competition (Kodansha) though its likely Kodansha USA could print the last couple of volumes, maybe.. IIRC it was a good seller, no? -
I bought a copy of this month's Shonen Jump, and I noticed something.
On the last page, Viz always shows a preview scene that will be in the chapters of the next month's issue.
For One Piece, the picture of Luffy smiling they used was from Chapter 597.
Which means, we will get FOUR chapters of One Piece next month, ending on the final chapter before the time skip.Viz must have added the chapter because they realize this is a big turning point in the series.

Oh my god. You are so right. (Said in Jimmy from South Park's voice).)

Are you trying to be sarcastic, my friend?

Are you trying to be sarcastic, my friend?
No. I'm being sincere. I didn't even notice that.
Also, I just like his voice. -
Oh. Alright, then.
Anyway, I still wonder if Luffy is going to be on the September or October cover. We'll see what happens. -
Viz must have added the chapter because they realize this is a big turning point in the series.
Unlike Shueisha, who put chapter 597 in the middle of a volume, even though it is pretty much MADE to be at the very end of a volume - like chapter 598 being made to be the beginning of a volume. :S
-
That's more like Oda's fault really, with his ''can't have extra pages because little kids will have to pay one nickel extra for an already inexpensive product'' stance that he adopted during Sabaody. That's why chapter 513 ended up in Vol. 53 instead of Vol. 52, which was clearly the original intention given its cover.
-
I'm not sure if this was posted here yet, but I just found this:
You can see it bigger here:

I started to think from a marketing point of view, it makes more sense to not end the volume on that chapter where ending a volume on a chapter like 597.
Ending the volume on a cliffhanger or in a chapter that doesn't round off at an ending of an arc would make the reader want to buy the next volume.
Plus, imagine if if people didn't like a certain arc. If Oda did end it on those kind of endings that separates arcs by volumes, then it makes it more likely that people don't buy those volumes. In this way, at least if people want to buy a certain arc, they have to buy a volume that finishes the arc in the next volume.

Alex Kirsch posted tweets on Volume 62?:
AlexisKJump: Argh… So many puns and word puzzles in Bakuman and One Piece lately... These dont translate well!
OPataTimeBlog: @AlexisKJump Good luck with those One Piece puns. Please try your best to make them translate well
AlexisKJump: @ OPataTimeBlog Doing my best but cant get too creative. The script had Surume as Calamari which is perfect but I changed back to be safe...So the scripted name was going to be Calamari, but he decides to change it back to Surume. What do you all think, I personally enjoyed reading that he changed it back, even if the name translates to calamari right? I'm going to be looking forward to the future volumes! :D

You should ask this in the "Gash Bell" thread. Anyway VIZ can't do anything with "Zatch" because of contractual issues which had arisen from a falling out between Makoto Raiku and Shogakukan.

So they're all the way up to Chapter 607, it seems.
Great, I hope the translation works out well.

Also there was an error in this month's Jump that I just found on Twitter.
http://twitpic.com/5ja5lu
Instead of calling him "Sniper King", Sanji called him Sogeking.I, myself, like to think that it's not an error, since I prefer Sogeking more than Sniper King.
-
yeah, it relly pisses me that they call him "sniper king", they shouldn´t translate names, and Sogeking count as one ;A;

You're joking right? This reads like a parody.
-
I really hope that it is in fact a typo, and will be fixed for the trade release.
Sogeking always reminded me of the word soggy. -
It'd be nice if they stayed with Sogeking. Never really liked Sniper King.

Yeah, I also hate the name of the character in translated form, I prefer it to be a nonsense word relative to my understanding that's only infringement in translation is the removal of a pun that I can't understand anyway.

So? I just like the way it sounds more. I don't care about a pun or anything.

You just like it because it sounds exotic, but it just means Sniper King.
-
Uh, they went to the trouble of changing his wanted poster from Sogeking to Sniper King. I think they want Sniper King.

I know what it means, and I don't really care about it sounding exotic. It's just what I'm used to reading and hearing.
It's not a big deal to me, they can use Sniper King or Sogeking. In the end I don't really give a damn, to be honest.
-
Sogeking is the name. It's a name that mixes Japanese with English. Translating the Japanese defeats the purpose.
-
Sniper King retains the damn pun what does it matter.
-
I'm laughing my ass off right now.
-
@Cyan:
Sniper King retains the damn pun what does it matter.
It's inconsistent with all of the other non-English language names left alone. We could call Nami 'Wave' and it'd "retain the pun" but nobody would stand for that. Viz's translation and their priorities are a mess. It doesn't do any harm to point this out and oppose them on it.
-
It's an alias and not a proper name as far as I'm concerned.
-
When was Nami's name ever used as a pun?
-
only in filler once as i remember
-
As I said last year, Sniperking is good. They actually translated it, as opposed to what they did with God Enel. There shouldn't be any complaints over it. You lose the little pun, but get the meaning, and "Sogeking" isn't going to give you the pun or the meaning anyway, so you may as well get one out of two right.
-
For those who don't understand the pun:
Sogeki = sniper
Add an "ng" and you get Sogeking, a pun mixing both Japanese and English.
A pun that most regular American readers wouldn't get without the help of some long, boring cliff note.
-
Note: Sogeki means sniper
That's three words.
I don't really care either way though. At first I was opposed, but I can see why it's translated.
-
Makes me wonder how Dosun is gonna be handled; his name is literally spelled out, but his sound effects are all real words that could easily be translated if he didn't use his own name as one of them.
-
I'm going to laugh my ass off if Viz translates his name as Thud.
-
LOL.
Weird argument. I prefer Sniper King.
I dunno why.Dosun sure will be funny when translated.
-

How about Biff, would that work?
-
How about Biff, would that work?
Technically, but I mean are they gonna outright change a character's name when it's been spelled in English in the story? And if so, would they keep his verbal ticks the same or translated, or just keep the one with his name and translate the rest?
-
Pow! Biff! Whack! Wham! Bam! Thwak! Thok!
