Once Luffy learns how to fully utilize Haki, he'll be so much more powerful than he was before in his first gear. So that would mean that using the Gears may drop, or he may just get better at it. I know Gear 2 is hazardous to his health, but Gear 3 hasn't been shown to be. Either way though, by using haki with either of these gives him a huge power boost.

Unless Luffy's bones and muscles are made of rubber instantly inflating and deflating must have some sort of affect on his body.

They are. How exactly can he do anything he does if that was not the case?

Were you joking?

I couldn't quite remember. I don't have everything about One Piece memorized.
-
Luffy is 100% rubber, flesh and bone included. Otherwise he would have broken all of his bones and tore all of his muscles whenever he performs something like Storm or Rifle.
-

I would think you'd remember that luffy was rubber. I mean come on…..
-
Luffy shouldn't care about the length of his life at all if all he wants to do is become the Pirate King. Limiting himself and worrying like that would just hold him back.
-

Well if Luffy keeps going for the consequences of using gear 2, he might end up being melted LOL srsly Gear 3 Should be named "God Strength" as they say DOTA :D

@Yonkou#3:

That doesn't stop spike from piercing him now, does it?
-
You can still slash and pierce rubber. Like when cars run over something sharp and get flat tires.
-
since all parts of his body is rubber how come his teeth is so identical com'n a teeth made of rubber and cud chew things like meat etc
-
thats like asking if aokiji melts on the sun…
DF users can either use the DF powers or not, if they dont the body will act as normal.
To demonstrate both smoker and ace were hit by luffy in Alabasta even though they are logia type.
Both smoker and ace can hold objects too, even though they are logia type. And finally luffy can chew meat even though he can be rubber...Blue

I haven't logged in for a long time now. Has anyone already mention how kuma sent every member of the straw hats to a place that would make each of them stronger individualy ?
So yes I agree that luffy will use his gears less. Simply because hacki obviously counteracts any devil fruit power. Kind of like evening the playing field. (it's how Raleigh was able to cut that admiral)
I beleive puffy will learn to control his hacki on this island. It also leads me to wonder how the other straw hats are becoming stronger -
In the most recent chapter, Luffy seemed to be able to use gear 2nd without experiencing much fatigue at all. He didn't seem to be out of breath and even went so far as to goof off during the fight. Maybe it could be the fact that he didn't use it as long, but it seems to me that he's gotten an increase in stamina since he Enies Lobby. I do, however, think that his gears will be pushed to the back-burner until he is able to use his haki well enough, but they'll be back eventually.

He doesn't need to show immediate effects of it when he uses it for a short time. It still does the damage, shortening his life span….......
-
^ But for all we know, Luffy's lifespan could be 150, and gear 2 is taking 5 or 10 off of that. No big deal really.
I lot of people are making a big case about the life shortening thing, but it's an old shonen cliche. A shortened lifespan means nothing until the end of Luffy's life. Plus it makes things more dramatic.
I remember Tien from the Dragonball series, his "Kikoho" or Tri-beam was a life shortening move that he used like a hundred times. Yet by the end of the series he was pushing 50. Again, for men with such great strength it's easy to believe that they'll have long lifespans already. Also, I really wish I remember who said this, but they made a good case as to why gear 2 might not be shortening his lifespan as much as it puts stress on his body(I mean, hell, that's just what Lucci said after all and he's not a doctor). I really wish I could cite it, maybe if I reread a few pages back…
Oh yeah, and both gears are probably staying around forever.
Edit: Found it. Page 2 starting from Brennen.exe's post lists an argument of stamina over lifespan costs for gear 2.
-
who gives a shit about his lifespan shortening in one piece. if he only lives to be 40 instead of 80 does that effect us. I'm betting we don't see more than 5 years at most in one piece time, so who cares

Why the fuck would his lifespan be that long for a human? 150 is half the lifespan of a giant in OP. I highly doubt that.
Also even what you say is true do the math. 5-10 years every time he uses gear 2 lol. Unless he stops after learning haki, he'll probably die when you look at some ppl he may have to beat and then getting to Raftel & OP.

If it wasn't important Oda would've never put in the manga. What's the point of saying the side effects of this new technique is deadly if it'll never come true? Also we don't know when Luffy's going to be PK or at what age….....
-
I don't think Gear Second affects his lifespan like the Machine in Princess Bride (Which could take off decades at a time lol). I think it's more like straining his body. If he uses it sparingly and takes care of himself and his body he'd live to a decent age, and only prolonged use will have the negative effects. I don't think it's like ''One use. Whoop, there goes six months. Two uses: there go six more. Three uses: I hope you weren't planning on living past age 50.''
And of course there's also the possibility that he gets used to it and improves his stamina over time so that he can withstand the negative effects.
Still, unless the last chapter of the series is an epilogue set years later when Luffy and the others close to his age are grown up, I don't think we're going to have to worry about him suddenly dropping dead.

.The number isn't important, the point is Luffy might already be living a long lifespan.
Also, there's clearly some miscommunication here because I meant 5 or 10 years from using it through the course of his life, however long that is. 5 or 10 years each use doesn't make sense, so obviously I didn't mean that.
Just clarifying what I meant though, since a few other people have made the point. The lifespan thing probably doesn't mean much, and is rather a device to make the story more dramatic. In the latest chapter, the lifespan thing isn't even an issue.

The Pit of Despair! Don't even thi–COUGH clears throat-- don't even think about trying to escape.

Okay, probably was a miscommunication on that part. Luffy living a long lifespan is still unlikely even if it's a possibility. It's not really an answer to gear 2 shortening his life span. It's more of a cop out. It's like first Gear 2 is dangerous, wears Luffy out after long use and shortens his life but guess what guys Luffy's predicted lifespan is 500-550 years so it doesn't matter anyway. That's lame imo(might as well have made Luffy Saul's son which makes him half-giant).
Also it's not dramatic until it actually plays a role in the manga. As of now it is just a fact that can be speculated on it's importance. I think it holds some weight. I mean we see the side effect of gear 3 and we are told the significance of gear 2's side effect, neither have a real up side one is immediate and the other is daunting.

wait why was the chapter discussion locked and why ban hicher?

It's haki …. H A K I, HAKI! Luffy shows determination when he eats meat. Everyone knows that

pleas dnt use haki to explain everthing, otherwise who knows the long term effects of such ludicrus speculation, it'll start of as how come luffys hat is still intact, and from there spiral out of control tearing the very fabric of space and time erasing us all….......is that what u want, huh
my god, no more redbull 4 me:blink:

You haven't seen the
hilarious"Haki is the cause of everything!" thread, have you? -
yeah, unfortunatly…............... i still find it hard to tell if som people are serious about there posts relating to haki, its spreading like wildfire. i couldnt start my car this morning and for a split second i blamed it on haki...............then slapped myself with a herring till i gained normality. y did oda create haki, and even worse the super saiyan links being made are ruining it
-
There's really no comparison. Haki is something only the most skilled of fighters can use based upon this own heart and mind power, it would appear. With SSj, y'just have to be pure of heart and pissed off.

tell that to the other lost causes out there
but seriously i love both op and grew up on dbz so yeah i lov em both both makin comparisons between the two just ruins its for me:sad:
yyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I doubt Luffy will stop using his gears just because he has haki. Luffy will find some way to incorparate both his haki and gears to create a new power. Luffy still has to master his haki and barely knows what it is and how to use it correctly.

hahah tooo baaad
