I loved entire East Blue, especially Morgan and Baratie. Baratie is still one of my absolute favorite arcs and I've re-read it multiple times, not a panel is wasted and it's the first time you get a glimpse of how strong pirates can be in the Grand Line.

I am not sure why so many people are so lukwarm to the Baratie arc. The Baratie was a really cool enviroment. Krieg, Gin and Pearl were all good villians. The addition of Mihawk was awesome. The uncertainty of where Nami stands in the crew was good. Sanji's back story. FUCKING ZEFF! Awesome Arc!

Also reminds me, since buggy was on Rogers crew, why on earth would he need the map for the entrance to the grand line?

I started following the manga when American jump came out, and was digging it well enough, I liked the first shapter and the emotion of ShuShu but I wasn't really wowed by it, it was typical enough shonen. And I was a bit thrown by some of the wierder designs, like say, Patty or Pearl.
Then, on one the tapes I got from Japan from a penpal, while watching something else (I forget what now) I noticed the tape had a 1 hour OP special. I shrugged, went ahead, and started watching it, raw though it was.
It was Luffy vs. Arlong. None of the setup, didn't understand the words, but I saw Arlong use a sawblade to climb a building, and thought it was one of the most awesome things ever. I also picked up on the fact that he made Nami cry, and whatnot… but thats the moment I was really convinced, and started hunting down other ways of seeing it, to get further than the slow pace of American Jump. (Which was on the Kuro arc for like, forever.)
Then I later got the actual experience of the Arlong arc, and it was awesome. But that was after having gotten Usopp's entire arc, Zoro's vow to Mihawk, Sanji's starvation, and more.

I pretty much skipped the first arc when I first started reading. It was only till the baratie arc did I really get the conviction of it becoming a hit series. I liked most of the kuro arc except kurus grand plan, espcially considering how much of a genius he was meant to be.
Funny how he's already massively overshadowed by even ussop in terms of strength.

I was really interested right from the first chapter honestly. There was some time between me reading the first chapter and me continuing from the second chapter onward, and I always liked the first chapter. It stood out at me as something I would like a lot going forward.
From then on, I liked the Morgan and Buggy arcs, got kind of bored with the Kuro arc, but really liked the Baratie arc. I'm still not a big fan of the Kuro arc.

first thing was Shanks losing his arm…thought that was a pretty good start to the series.
than Alvida was pretty weak, but than we came to Zoro and Morgan which have just a great design!
the Morgan-arc wasnt that good while i first read it but it had its good moments.
than Buggy-arc...nahh think its still the weakest arc. didnt like any of it the first time i read it.
than Gaimon..was okay...he was funny^^
Kuro-arc was amazing.just loved it and its till today maybe the arc i most read(with the arlong-arc maybe about 9 times each)through the years. still has one of the most badass scenes ever, when Kuro comes and lays his arms around Siam and Flecki(dont know the english names of those two) and with his claws he tickles them at their neck^!

I pretty much always liked it, The first moment thats just really capitivating and gives you the first glimpse of the tone and scope of the series is Zoro vs Mihawk though. After that we get our first really good flashbask (Sanji), first really good fight imo (Krieg vs Luffy), and then step into the epicness that is Arlong Park. But I loved Captain Kuro and still do till this day. His arc I thought dragged though. But yes, typical shonen then Zoro v Mihawk- epicness then and still.

I loved it from the beginning, but the Morgan arc caught me well and fast. Just loved Luffy and the simple yet effective way he summed things up by actions rather than words most of the time, and his interactions with Zoro on that pole were so funny.

I read part of the first volume in a bookstore, and was intrigued, but only passingly. Then I got to the part where Luffy piledrives richie and punches Mohji, and I was hooked. For some reason, that punch was just so perfect and different from american comics to me.
and everything since then has captivated me in the same way.

Arlong wasn't that special. I was in love when they introduced Usopp. Before syrup village I said damn this is a good watch but after syrup village I was like this is my favorite. That and the fact that I saw hililuks speech a couple years before hand I knew this was the bestmanga ever. By the time aokiji was introduced I had already given my life to Oda,

Well my first contact with the series was a the little garden episodes i believe when watching on a tv channel randomly so i didnt rreally start at Arlong, still i went back(obviously) and saw everything and i was entertained trough everything, i might say that indeed the Alvida part was nothing amazing but it was an introduction to Luffy powers.

I feel that the scene where Shanks loses his arm to rescue Luffy was really touching. However, although I am now a One Piece fan, taking out my bias, the Red Hair pirates were no more bad ass than some characters from the works of Tezuka Osamu (or from any mangaka from the first generation).
The art was cute, but lacks brilliance. The humor was ordinary at best.
The scene where Shanks stared down a Sea King was very bewildering, and seemed clearly like a plot device.
It wasn't the most brilliant of beginning chapters. (Brilliant beginning chapters tend to put too much pressure and expectation on novice authors for their later work in my opinion) -

Morgan, Krieg, and Arlong were the top. Kuro and Buggy were not at the top, with Kuro edging ahead.

The whole East Blue Saga was awesome, imo. The Morgan arc got me interested in the series. I liked Buggy's arc, although it was kinda dull. Kuro's arc was bitchin'. Usopp won me over and Kuro was the first villian who I thought was pretty frightening. Baratie was just epic. Mihawk, Sanji, Zeff, Gin, Luffy vs. Krieg. There was no part of that arc that I didn't like. I was hooked. Arlong arc just made things better. Nami's backstory and The March on Arlong Park. That is when I knew that Oda was the king.

The only parts I didn't like before Arlong were the annoying non-main villains. Unicycle guy? The cat brothers? and shudder Pearl? They are just bland, obnoxious, useless badies. I think Oda's greatest strength is his ability to create interesting characters, and these early guys just didn't do it for me.
That said, East Blue is awesome. Mihawk showing up really sealed the deal for me though; the first of many times that Oda would throw us all for a loop and elevate a very good arc to greatness. I loved his willingness to depart from the the current story to flesh out his world and set up future events.

I actually started reading it in the middle of Arlong… in the American SJ.
I honestly don't think I would've been impressed by much before that point, coming in fresh. People use Arlong as a checkpoint for new readers for a reason. Early East Blue characters and non-flashback plots felt a little uninspired.

We have no idea when Buggy joined the crew, maybe he was already in Grand Line when Roger picked him up. If so, he wouldn't how to actually get in the Grandline, now would he? There are many other possibilities, like say do you think Luffy would be able to re-enter Grandline without his current crew even though he already should be aware of the way to get in…
Oh, and I loved One Piece from the start, and except for Gaimon arc, loved every minute of it.

kreig and gin are still two of my favorite villains and i'm really awaiting their return if they do come back
kreig had a really neat fighting style and gin seemed like a really interesting character who could definitely use some back story. the baratie arc in general was probably my favorite in the east blue saga and probably one of my favorite arcs still to this date, it seemed pretty small + contained but the action was fun and the characters were neat. the arcs in OP are really long now which doesn't bother me but i liked the old east blue style of 10-20 chapter arcs + villain of the week kinda deal. i hope OP returns to that in the new world for a bit. -
Luffy was already the way he is at the start. I loved Buggy arc, the fight between Buggy and Luffy was especially awesome. Two obscure DFs duking out with two great personalities. Morgan arc wasn't bad either.

The beginning with Shanks and Luffy was interesting it felt right. Alvida and Coby were just meh. I didn't even thought that Coby would be an important character. The only thing I like about Morgan's arc was whenever Luffy is talking with Zoro whilst being tied on the pole.
I would never believe that I would like Buggy's arc but I think it was Shushu who did it for me and I like their Mayor especially on the last bit. He made me smile.
Humble beginnings I tell you. I really missed when there's still the three of them. I feel nostalgic whenever I see just Luffy, Zoro and Nami.
Moving on… I like Kuro's plan. It's simple and it would make him a good guy of some sort. But aside from that it's just so-so.
I wasn't really hooked on by Arlong's arc but rather by Baratie. Sanji's flash back, Mihawk, Zoro's loyalty and Zeff captivated me and made me want for more of One Piece. I never expected for Zoro to be like that towards Luffy especially when considering how Luffy found and recruited Zoro. "Wow, he was taking Luffy seriously."
Well, Sanji is my favorite strawhat but I like little Sanji even more and of course Zeff.
Mihawk will forvever be my favorite Shichibukai because I enjoyed how he was introduced...it was so early in the series and it was too big but the execution of it all was well-done.

I pretty much like it a lot. I mean I was hooked to series by the ending of the Kuro arc. But Arlong cemented that I was going to continued the series until it ends.
I started on the Arlong arc in the manga right around when I gradurated high school (I was reading the manga online during my Speical education class since I had homework done and stuff. I could get on the computer in that class room since I was the teacher pet.) back in 2005.
But during my final weeks of high school, I finished reading the Arlong arc as well the Louge Town arc. During the summer before my first year of college I read all of the Laboon, Whisky Peak, Drum Island, and Alabasta. And when my first year of college started I was at the mid-point of Jaya. Then by November of 2005 I caught up to series when Robin's Flashback was about to begin.
But yeah the Arlong arc pretty made me want to catch up to the current events of One Piece and pretty much me a fan of the series.

morgan saga was pretty good , and i loved how motgan looked , so weird but still cool, also zoro was awesome
buggy arc:story could have been better but i really liked the characters here , a clown as a pirate is pretty awesome i also liked the mayor and was sad when the dog lost the shop :sad: and the mystery behind nami began
kuro arc: i really like captain kuro , and the arc was suprising , somebody who wants power or richdom but just wants to live normally ,but wants to kill a whole vllage for it , thats a cool concept, usopp was ok
batarie arc:very good ,i liked gin , but didn't like pearl and krieg that much,still awesome story,nice fight between luffy and krieg, we saw zoro still had a long way to go and sanji was awesome
arlong: we all know it was awesome, we learned namis past , who still is one off the three sadest ones , arlong was awesome , fights were awesome , not much to say except it was just awesome

Before the Arlong arc, I was impressed that I could care so much about characters in a manga, especially in the Kuro and Baratie arcs. When the Arlong arc hit, that feeling multiplied by a hundred.

I rekon the flashbacks were the bast part of the series pre-Arlong. I can't speak for the manga, but in the anime they were ??? (need a word that means epic, beautiful and tragic at the same time)

The first page of One Piece that I saw was where Zoro cut himself open fighting Cabaji. My reaction was "Holy shit that's awesome!" And that's pretty much what I've thought since the beginning of the series.

I preferred Baratie to Arlong. Obviously in terms of writing and plot, Arlong was superior… but I'm not a big fan of sob stories. I didn't really like Nami that much either, but she was better than she is now.
I liked OP from the start... the weird sense of humour made me read more.

I think the Arlong arc was the turning point in One Piece. One Piece was good before Arlong, but during that arc, it proved to me (and a few others I know as well) that One Piece was great.
To this day, the Arlong arc stands as one of my top three favorite arcs.

That moment is why I'm one of the few who absolutely love the Buggy Arc. It's the first time we really see Luffy lose his cool. That's the first time we get his 'I'ma fuck you up' look. I also love the Buggy arc because it was the first DF v DF battle in the manga, and the only one in all of East Blue. Perhaps, now that I think about it, I didn't completely love Buggy's arc until we got his cover story. I loved the idea of using covers to tell a side story, and that Buggy was the first was perfect, since what happened to him was so unsure.
I really enjoyed all of the East Blue arcs, but I think Arlong hooked me for 2 big reasons: 1) The fact that we were getting such a mature theme of race inspired violence was intriguing to me, most likely due to the fact that the only other manga I had read at this point was Naruto and Bleach. 2) The scene were Nami stabbed her arm over and over and everything that followed with the march to Arlong Park was epic. I really loved it.
Once I finished Arlong Park, I knew that no matter what I would finish this series.

Seriously, it was insanely boring!!! I read it once. Dropped it during the Captain Kuro arczzzZZZZzzzz (I loved Buggy, even though his arc came to me like pure shit).
Tried the anime. Dropped before Baratie.
Since I was interested due to the drawing style, I tried another time much later. Almost dropped it on Baratie but I forced it a bit more and got to Arlong… LOVED!!! Arlong Park was the part that made me seriously start loving OP.
Nowadays I love the East Blue arc, but it is really hard to get over everything until the story really gets into you.
"From the start until the point Sanji joins" is always a huge wall every time I try to make someone read OP. Gathering the first crewmembers is just so repetitive, the fights are boring and even the humor is not really funny (Gaimon being the sole exception).

Yeah, I really got into it around the Baratie arc like most people have. Honestly, the first volume had me hooked. But I suppose I was even more so when they got to the Baratie. I guess it was back in seventh grade that I started reading it. You know, back when Viz actually used cuss words and the name Zoro too.
I'm now into my freshman year in college and it still surprises me how much I'm into this series. I've tried to get into other long running series like Bleach and Naruto over the years, but eh, they just can't hold my interest like One Piece.
I certainly plan to still keep up with it even after college.

Funnily enough, i never thought about One Piece before Arlong Park, because it was the first arc i read, thanks to shonen jump. I was hooked after that, and bought the volumes. I think, even without it, that i would have loved it from the start anyway though.

I was in love from the second chapter. I think it was Luffy calling Coby worthless so bluntly. And saying "how should I know?" when Coby asked if he thought he could become a marine. Most of the series I read before (for example, Ruroken) would have long gushy speeches to answer a character like Coby. So Luffy's simplicity really won me over.

I just loved Luffy. Reason was because he was so simple yet determined. Not afraid to speak his mind and stuff like that. So yes, from the first episode. Don't kill me cause I watched the anime before reading the manga! But One Piece started to get real interesting when we hit Baratie Arc. I thought Mihawk was badass, it set the tone.
