If you're on the fence i'd say go for it and go see it. Don't get your hopes high but give it a chance and you'll like it. It's funny, intense, intelligant and best of all it has good action sequences.
X-Men: First Class

I actually prefered X1 over X2 mainly because Magneto's was the main antagonist with a great backstory. Mckellen and Stewart were just amazing. I loved the father and daughter relationship between Rogue and Wolverine. X1 was deep without trying to be too smart. The Dark Knight is symbolism for dummies because the writers tell you right in your face what that is. I think it is more important for the audience to uncover the answers by themselves.

I'm sad.
Said I'd see it on Wednesday.
Couldn't afford it.

Haven't been to the cinemas since Toy Story 3
IN SEPTEMBER.I haven't since Half-Blood Prince came out. In July 2009.

One of the best films I've seen in a LONG time, by FAR.
Continuity was applaudibly outstanding.
A part of me doesn't want a series of these prequels like they plan to do, because gradually, as they go on, we'll end up with a film where they're basically the X Men movies. The point of this was to show a completely different side; which it did. And also Xavier, what to do with Xavier since he got crippled. (Yeah I know he is in the X Men films but in those he was more a mentor, taking a backseat - the prequels should feature him becoming who he is and I felt this achieved that.)
I'm sure there are more stories to tell, most definitely. But I felt this acheived all that was necessary. I don't want a series of prequels that will get worse and tarnish my memory.
-
As long as Matthew Vaughn and Bryan Singer are making them, I have faith in more good movies that follow up on First Class. Vaughn already said he has a story in mind for First Class 2 and that he'd love to direct it, so it's not like they're making a sequel and then decide what they're going to do either.
Vaughn wants to introduce one new character in the sequel who is able to go toe to toe with Magneto, so Polaris it is.
-
Saw it last night and was really satisfied especially with Xavier and Magneto's relationship. I'm just going to considered this a stand alone though.
-
I saw this last night. Kevin Bacon was excellent in this movie. He might even get an oscar nomination nod for this.
Ill comment more once more people see this, best movie of the year so far.
-
I still need to wait a week.
One question
How are the action scenes ? I have to admit that I love action scenes when they don't cut every quarter of a second (Quantum of Solace) and the lack of stupid explosion (Gi joe). In other words, I love it when I understand what is going gon.
-
I love action scenes when they don't cut every quarter of a second (Quantum of Solace)
I hated that as well. My eyes found it hard to keep up with.
-

That was the big let down of the movie. The previous director (Martin Campbell) was amazing at filming action scenes in Casino Royale and Goldeneye (Bond vs Trevelyan fist fight was brutal). He directed the action scenes of Mask of Zorro which were outstanding. I forgot the red hair was smoking hot and she had like 10 minutes of screentime and the character had a lot of potential.
Transporter 3 had the same problem (they even cut every seconds during exposition scenes)However, these 2 movies make a good close up and steady shot of cell phones or cars (product placement) which is lame.
-

That would mean it would have to time skip since Polaris is his daughter.
I can see her being in the second one as in the comics she has relations with Havok.
-
Bryan Singer wasn't a real director?
I think I was just bing cynical when I wrote that. But no, he is not a personal favorite.
-
So glad Wolverine isn't in this, we need a breather from him. Almost flipped out yesterday, a guy in my Spanish class said "Why bother with an X-men movie, everyone knows he's the leader." I almost popped adamantiam claws on his nuts.
Lol…I hate to be the bringer of bad news...He stole the scene again.
-
Lol…I hate to be the bringer of bad news...He stole the scene again.
Wolverine was brilliant in this. It actually made me laugh, out loud, for a while. Which a lot of films these days can't do.
-
I don't mind if he'll be in as a cameo, but I'm just saying they made this movie franchise about him.
-
Saw this movie tonight, and I loved it. It was great.
The acting. The plot. The interactions. Awesome.
The score. Not so much, but I can overlook that because of how great the rest of the movie was.
-

Or they can just ignore that since Polaris being Magneto's daughter was retconned into the story 35 years after her introduction.
-
This movie was good (not great). But what could have made it great was the lack of an insect-winged stripper.
-
So after watching the film I decided to get more into the X Men Films. Just finished X3: The Last Stand. What a huge disappointment.
Ugh. Killing off Scott so flippantly, with no coherent explanation or focus. And then Xavier? The Fuck? Only to bring him back at the end, inexplicably. How the hell did he survive? We saw him ripped apart. If he is alive, is Scott? Why is he in a coma?
I don't like Halle Berry's Storm; her acting is pretty bad. It tried to be too jokey most of the time, whereas with X2 and moreso First Class it was completely driven by plot.
There was no closure whatsoever to Mystique's storyline. And taking away Magneto's powers was ridiculous because it happened when most of the action was near end, so therefore the loss of the powers wasn't as big as it could've been. It was only to say in the last few seconds, OOPS. HE GOT THEM BACK AGAIN.
It feels, too comic book. Like a Live Action film shouldn't go this far into comic mythology if they can't handle it. Like tackling clones, deaths and inexplicable resurrections all at once.
-

Xavier transferred his mind into the coma patient before his meat suit was blown up, but yeah, it's stupid.
And second the stupidity of Magneto losing his powers during the clusterfuck of the last ten minutes of the movie.
-
X3 had loads of mutants we did not care. The movie was an excuse to show action scenes and mutant powers.
Angel was heavily promoted but he does almost nothing in this movie. You even wonder why he is even here.
God damn, Magneto's way to control the Phoenix was so random and out of place. For whatever reasons, she follows Magneto just like that.
Cyclops had a lot of potential and I loved his chemistry with wolverine but he was expendable because he is not popular like Wolverine.
Godd things: I loved the scene when Magneto speaks highly of Xavier after his death to Pyro. Xavier and Magneto interaction were good. I admit that I loved the scene where Wolverine tries to reach Jean during the climax. The ost was excellent.
-

This pissed me off to unbelievable levels. Everytime he flew on screen I'm like ok time to do work then all of a sudden he flies off for no reason to parts unknown

The only reason to watch X3 is to see Kitty call Juggernaut a dickhead.
-
The only reason to watch X3 is to see Kitty call Juggernaut a dickhead.
You could have ended that statement at Kitty. Seriously, Kitty needed to be Rogue in these movies, and Ellen Page should have been her since the beginning.
But that's just me.
-
That's what I've always thought too. They basically swapped Kitty's role and relationship (and Jubilee's, but she's awful in every way possible) to Wolverine in the comics with Rogue in the movies. And since then every form of X-Men media copied that relationship for some reason even though it just didn't exist in the comics at all. I don't mind switching things around for adaptions, but this one seemed rather pointless (though I find Anna Paquin incredibly cute so I wouldn't have minded it that much if Kitty wasn't my favourite X-Man).
And when we FINALLY get Kitty in a significant role, she's in a love triangle for most of the movie. UGH. Completely waste of Ellen Page's awesomeness (until the Juggernaut fight, of course).
-
The only reason to watch X3 is to see Kitty call Juggernaut a dickhead.
Haha yeah that was pretty hilarious. I love Ellen Page.
I liked Anna Paquin as Rogue though. Probably comes from me being True Blood fan.
Speaking of the Juggernaut though, I thought he was awful. I hate Vinnie Jones.
-
I wouldn't mind Anna Paquin as Rogue….if Rogue weren't the Kitty Pryde role. I don't know. I just think that role doesn't suit Rogue, at all. Rogue has her demons, but she's far too playful and wild to be so meek. Granted, Kitty isn't a pushover, but Anna's Rogue was so.....mousy.
Speaking of mousy...I will never like Halle Berry's performance as Storm. YOU'RE STORM! STAND STRONG! PROJECT YOUR VOICE! You are a goddess! BE ONE!

Alright so I saw the film and I gotta say, easily my favorite X-men movie. I don't hate Wolverine, I love his character and the mystery behind him. But I think for him less is more, X-Men Evolution got him right, they limited his appearances, made it apparent he wasn't the focus, and had a few episodes based solely around him, instead of the movies which were based around him and faded out others.
Obviously there were some plot holes people we're pointing out and I'm curious if they'll leave them, or fix them. Here are some of my theories.
! -I feel like Magneto's transformation isn't done yet. We've seen in the comics his great friendship with Charles and how he's changed sides. I feel like by the next movie, or at least in the end something will cause him to rekindle his friendship with Xavier. Then in the third movie he'll be set off again. We know the two of them see Jean and that is at a much later point.
! - Charles was crippled in the end by Magneto. I feel like this was done without thinking of two movies that had him walking clearly after this point(the opening scene in X3 and Origins). I'm wondering if they'll bring in Elixir, or someone with healing abilities to heal him either midway, or near the end of the second movie. I feel like there will be big timeskips between these movies, and there will be a big one between the second and third movies, going to after Xavier met Scott, and met Jean.
! -Obviously Emma Frost was in Origins. I'm wondering if they'll go with a clone route, or maybe Emma will be shattered as a Diamond, reassembled but as a younger form with no memory. She meets Kayla, they become "Sisters" as they both find they are different and Origins happens.
! -Then we have Havoc and Cyclops. I'm curious as to how this relationship will go. When I heard Havoc was gonna be in this movie I assumed they wouldn't be related but they specifically said "Alex Summers" When they went to recruit him. This one I have no idea on. -

This is why part of me doesn't want these sequels to 'FIRST CLASS' because we'll end up by the last First Class film, basically seeing the same thing as X Men 1. First Class presented X Men, but a completely different side to anything we've seen before, film-wise. A huge contrast, which was what it's appeal was made of. And I feel like the story of Magneto and Xavier has been played out as far as it can go. I mean sure they could do other stuff, but it feels as though the stuff between them in this movie is the VITAL stuff, while sequel stuff is unecessary expansion.
- Charles was crippled in the end by Magneto. I feel like this was done without thinking of two movies that had him walking clearly after this point(the opening scene in X3 and Origins). I really didn't like this if it's going to be a trilogy of sorts as they intend. It'll be much much harder to work the script and play out Magneto and Xavier's complicated relationship dynamic, and maybe affect the pacing of the film if the others are jetting off and Xavier is restricted by his wheelchair in terms of action content. As a stand alone film, yeah it brings perfect closure. But as a series it places huge limitations on him. It was fine in X1, X2, and X3 cus he was taking a backseat and watching in a mentor role from afar - but this is HIS uprising story. I suppose it could expand on the potential there for him coming to terms with his crippling and betrayal of Magneto and exploit the emotional and thematic potential in Xavier's coming to terms with this and opinions and views.
-Obviously Emma Frost was in Origins. I'm wondering if they'll go with a clone route, or maybe Emma will be shattered as a Diamond, reassembled but as a younger form with no memory. She meets Kayla, they become "Sisters" as they both find they are different and Origins happens.
Aside from loosely, I don't really take the continuity of X123 in mind when I think of this. I mean the continuity presented is INCREDIBLE. But if there are any inconsistencies I'm not really bothered because what details were done were done expertly.

Yeah just re-igniting and expanding on my love of comics, I recently looked that up. Wonder how they'll work with that. Maybe they wanted to introduce him and make it clear but not too clear he's a chekhov for Scott's introduction.
I'm just weary they'll go the predictable route and by the end of the First Class franchise tie everything up in neat little bows with even cameos from Scott etcetera, and we'll come to a point where it's like watching a film that takes place three or four weeks before X1, because as I said, the beauty of Firs Class is that it shows us the completely new.

I think the reason Rogue ended up the way she did is because Fox probably wanted the most popular X-Men characters to be present in the movie. And because the movie didn't have a relatable teenage character yet, they went with Rogue.

Wolverine has always worked better as a supporting character whose role is to show up at times and be a badass or be the wise mentor figure to the younger generation. The only times he works as a main character is when its about his past.
He's fantastic in Astonishing X-Men and he about the least amount of screentime out of the six main characters.
Obviously there were some plot holes people we're pointing out and I'm curious if they'll leave them, or fix them. Here are some of my theories.

Origins can very easily be ignored (and even its sequel was going to do just that) because it falls out of the main trilogy's timeline. X3… eh. I know X4 and X5 are in production and Singer has shown interest in directing them, but until that's actually set in stone, the last thing we've seen chronologically in X-Men's movie continuity is Jean sacrificing herself in a phoenix-shaped ball of fire.

Best superhero movie I've seen in a while, it rivals "The Dark Knight" in awesome actually. The movie has a lot of moments that made me actually happy (Xavier and Mystique's first meeting is the sweetest thing that I have seen in a while) and a lot of sad moments (Seeing how Magneto slowly became insane throughout the film I mean) not to mention it had a ton of action for it's running time.
My only complaint, and this isn't even really one is that this wasn't a reboot of the X-Men franchise. I know it wasn't needed but I really wanted them to be apart of Marvel's new movie universe in someway. At least we saw what became of the Magneto film though…
-
I was a bit underwhelmed to be very honest. Loved the acting and the setting, no complaints there. It was just predictable. I was expecting ALOT from the early dynamics and relationship between Erik and Xavier and there was just… it was just everything that I inferred there would be with the no added details I was expecting to see. It's kind of hard to explain, from the anguish Xavier feels over Magneto I was expecting a lot more from their friendship and partnership but there was hardly anything. Magneto agrees it's logical to join with his own kind to get back at the doctor, they share one ONE very tender emotional moment, and he very easily slips back into his old ways. I was expecting we would get a nice deep look into his psyche but it was more focused on Xavier's feelings (and just Magneto's actions). Well, he is sad/angry/ultimately pissed off that guy killed his mother. He's gotta get that guy. Normal people like and accept him but there's no impact because it takes a lot more then acceptance to quell the bloodthirst of such an individual.
With that lack of detail into his character and relationships (and that random scene with mystique suddenly appearing in his bed, what was that about???) and the fact we already knew what was going to happen, I felt underwhelmed. Though in the end, that's all there is to his character. It's nothing deep and complex, he is a (quite literally) tortured soul hellbent on revenge. I thought, from how he was presented in the original three movies that this movie would show his decent from normal (or somewhat) to what he became but he was honestly the same person the entire time :/ Well from the point where his mother was killed and onward.
But other then that, it's ok. There was atleast some insight into Xavier's character and he DID undergo quite a bit of change, and the same can be said for Raven/Mystique as well (especially moreso, she was probably the most interesting character in the movie even though she wasnt the most important, if they had fleshed out her character even more (or if the movie had been about her XD) it would've been VERY interesting). And more backstory for Beast as well.
It's sad I found Logan's 5 second scene the best part of the movie :/
-
Fox is really beginning to bother me with this "black people" business.
Transformers and now this.I'm not mad Darwin died (although that made little to no sense), but the "Slavery" and then cut to his face thing? Really?
But how did he die? Didn't he already adapt to havoc's blast?
I liked the movie, but holy fuck was I mad for a bit. That wolverine part made me laugh quite a bit though, and it was nice to see Azazeal's father actually using his teleportation move in an awesome way.
The effects were great even, but I found the ending too cheesy for words…. They really killed it with the "X-Men", "Paralyzing scene", and the final "Call me Magneto".
And Mystique was just annoying. Her development was great though.
Isn't Scott Havoc's older brother? Also..... I notice that Scott's moment of discovery was missed by Xavier. (where he was playing baseball) Does that mean time was changed? O_o
-
My cousin saw it in his own way…cough...and told me it wasn't that great but I'm still going to see it because everyone has different opinions I think it looks amazing
-
So I'm watching X Men Origins, and Will.I.Am is in a Spiderman 2 style lift scene.
Not looking good.
-
I'm not mad Darwin died (although that made little to no sense), but the "Slavery" and then cut to his face thing? Really?
This. I was pretty taken aback by that, there was no reason to go there. Lol we were up in the front so I couldn't see reactions but someone very loudly went "UHHHHHH." in a very offended tone at that part.
-
Enjoy Ryan Reynolds. From that point on, it's all down hill.
The dual katana scene just played. The action is really good.
-

That's the high point of the entire movie, in my opinion. After that…"Hey, let's kill two old people for good measure!"

My favorite was, "Okay…. People are dead."
It's amazing how that movie started SO PERFECT and then threw up all over itself.
-
The whole Kuekuatsu thing was so blatant and stupidly in-your-face that it meant Logan; so therefore we expected Kayla's feath which was a bit silly. But I liked the anger and drive it gave Logan.
-
I dont think darwin died. I was expecting to see him at the end of the credits but I still dont believe he died. I think he will be back.

After reading his powers on wikipedia… No I don't think so either.
He's apparently been in the form of PURE ENERGY before and still survived.... wink wink

Imagine if Halle Berry, Will.I.Am and Vinnie Jones all got together and made a spinoff movie.
That'd probably turn the average cinema-goer of x men for life.
-
G-MEN? BUT WITHOUT THE G.
… X-MEN
CALL ME MAGNETO
I AM MYSTIQUE
(You should be called professor x)
-
But how did he die? Didn't he already adapt to havoc's blast?
Shaw seems to absorb nuclear energy before every fight so he probably dropped a small atomic bomb in Darwin. For a second it looked like he was turning into the silver surfer and while his comic book version might have survived i think this movie version is dead.
-
I guess it was the "black guy dies first" gene that made him succumb. His powers said "we will make this" but hollywood said "nein!".
-
Speaking of which the polylingual aspect of this film was handled incredibly well, unlike say in Saoirse Ronan's 'Hanna' (which was admittedly still a great film) where they had the bad guy just be this blonde haired blue eyed "hurr he's aryan" played by Tom Hollander who would turn up and speak mostly in English and then give some end-phrases or one words in German.
