I nned to make a website that clear up the confusion of the dubs. Some people think DBZ in English is 276 episodes. That was the case before FUNimation decided to redub the first 67 episodes, but once they did, those dubs of the first 53 (actually 67 in the Japanese) with Ocean Studios voice acting became seperate with FUNimation's inhouse dub of episodes 68-291. Some people think the remastered sets are different from those epsiodes shown on Cartoon Network. That maybe the case for the first 67 episodes on there (because those were the redubs). Some people who are in this Ocean vs FUNimation wars really need help with their info. Someone uploaded the first episode of the 1995 dub of Dragon Ball and called it FUNimation/Ocean dub on youtube. Some fanbrat said the user needs to do their homework because Ocean/Harmony Gold/Madman Entertainment (I am not kidding) did this and not FUNimation. Some people actually think that the whole Dragon Ball Z's first dub of the first two seasons is alot like when 4kids dubbed the first two seasons of One Piece. They think Saban or Ocean was screwing up DBZ, then they dropped it and FUNimation "saved" it. Though I do see some similarities between the two situations, they are mostly different.

you sir, are serious about your FUNimation facts :wassat:
but that was pretty interesting. i actually didn't know all of that, just most of it. -

I named that when FUNimation saved One Piece. FUNimation is a good dubbing company, but comes a Dragon Ball series that isn't the original nor Kai and they mess up. I still enjoy the dubs, but the dialogue makes me cringe though. It makes me cringe watching Vegeta's death where he saids Freeza would threaten to kill his father when he was a child if he didn't obey his orders, when in the original he said the Saiyans would work for him to destroy other planets only for him to kill them just because he is afraid that a Super Saiyan would come amongst them. Another thing I would like to point out, as much as I love a more manly sounding Bardock, it makes me cringe to listen to him say "Kakarot, thank you for showing me the errors of my ways, I am now a better person thanks to you. I wish I spent more time with you!" when this is nothing like his character. In the original, he didn't care about Goku (due to him having a low power level) until he had a vision of him what appears to be him fighting Freeza in his first form, believing he'll be the one to beat him. What he actually said in the original was "Kakarot, avenge us Saiyans, beat Freeza. Beat Freeza for us Saiyans!:

Oh, than it makes much more sense. I'm the same way: I love Funimation's work, but their DBZ dub (I find the Dragon Ball dub isn't as bad) has bad dialogue and I only really like it for the nostalgia factor.
At least after all the times they've released a dub for DBZ, Kai truely seems to be their "we're going to try to get it right this time" dub that puts the others to shame.

I generally just tell people to avert their attention over to the end credits of Seasons 1 and 2 to show that FUNi was always the one who held the license rights to DBZ in North America.
As for natural causes, it's as mentioned before; the Dragon Balls won't revive someone who died of natural causes (illnesses count as such). Unnatural causes of death are generally ruled under something that triggered a death before someone's lifespan was up, such as being killed or in the Grand Elder's case of tremendous heartbreak and grief.
-
Maybe it's just me, but the original Japanese score for DBZ movie 5 sounds a lot like music you'd hear in the original Dragon Ball series. All I know is that it sounds quite unique from the other movies. The music that plays when Piccolo is fighting Cooler's Armored Squadron sounds like something that should be playing while Goku is fighting Tao Pai Pai, or something.
Meh, just figured I'd post my thoughts on that.

wasn't it the very first License they got? I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure DBZ is how FUNimation got their start.
-
The thing that bothers me the most about Funimation are their tons of double standards… It confuses the piss out of me.
"We won't have Sanji saying Shit" Then BUGGY SAYS IT? Wha-
"We translate everything, including openings and endings" Full Metal Alchemist Endings and Openings go undubbed....
"We only match mouth flaps and speak when characters are speaking..." Have off screen dialogue that isn't there...
They make my head hurt. And for some odd reason FMA: Brotherhood's voice dubbing is at a SUPER low volume...
Not the best dubbing company ( I like viz more), but certainly up there.

That is because both Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z have the same music composers. To be honest, I like hearing Dragon Ball music playing in Dragon Ball Z, considering that they're really just the same shows. About as much of same shows as Naruto is to Naruto Shippuden. The Dragon Ball music to me screams Dragon Ball.
If there is anything I find, up to the 23rd World Torunment Arc, it followed this convection. Goku and friends go up against a main villain while searching for Dragon Balls. Afterwards, they take a break in a tournment arc. The Red Ribbon Army Arc was the only one to do something different as they go up against Fortuneteller Baba's minions first so they could use the Dragon Balls again. The world tournment would always have a boss. The first one had Jackie Chun, the second one had Tenshinhan, and the third one had Piccolo Jr.
Then starting in the Saiyan Arc, where Toei decided to change the show into Dragon Ball Z and Viz decides to do the same with their manga release. It's a little different. A lackey of the first villain for DBZ gets an arc devoted to himself, just like how Mr.3 and Ms.Goldenweek got an arc to themselves in One Piece. Then comes the Namek Saga where they go against the first main villain. Once the first main villain was defeated, they didn't go to a world tournment. Instead, they train for the Androids for the Android Arc. This said arc had the first villain who wasn't the leader of whatever group he is apart of. It was Android 20 (or Dr.Gero) that was the leader of that group. Now I know Android 20, Android 18, and Android 17 are actually cyborgs. Now Gohan was supposed to carry on the hero torch at this point. Then comes the Majin Buu Arc. At first, we are lead to believe that this is a world tournment arc, but Spopovich and Yamu who works for Babidi comes to ruin everything. The main villain in this arc is like the one in the Android Arc, he wasn't the leader of whatever group he was apart of. Originally in the pre Dragon Ball era, it was Bibidi. In here, it was Babidi. Now Gohan was originally meant to beat Majin Buu since he was the main hero at this point. Goku was weaker than Gohan and Gotenks at this point. Goku would lose to Super Buu and maybe even Fat Buu, as he didn't just went on out on him. Fat Buu was only weaker after Evil Buu seperates from him. Dragon Ball Z has had world tournments, but they're not real tournment arcs, because they did not last, or in the Majin Buu Arc's case, it wasn't the main issue like how the ones in Dragon Ball were. I like how all of the main villains have transformations of their own. Freeza had his first form, then his second, then third and then fourth. Cell was different as he had to absorb Android 17 and Anroid 18 to transform. We start off with Imperfect Cell , then Semi Perfect Cell (after absorbing Android 17) and Perfect Cell (after absorbing Android 18). Majin Buu, I don't know how to describe it. First we have Fat Buu (who is stronger than you think), then Evil Buu emerges from Fat Buu weakening him, and then he eats Fat Buu and becomes Super Buu who is much stronger, then we get Gotenks Buu (after absorbing Gotenks and Piccolo), and get a little of Piccolo Buu (after Gotenk's fusion runs out) who is probally stronger than his Super Buu form but not as strong as his Gotenk's Buu form, then we get Gohan Buu (after absorbing Gohan who at this point was stronger than all of the Z fighters), and finally we get Kid Buu (after Goku and Vegeta remove Piccolo, Gohan, Trunks and Goten out of his) who is the most dangerous, but no stronger than Super Buu despite what the dub makes it seem. Kid Buu may have been beating on Fat Buu, but I doubt he could win against him if Fat Buu had the strength he had before having Evil Buu removed from him.

You were doing so well until you go to this part. Goku COULD have beaten Buu, he says it to grand kai in fact. He wanted Gotenks and Gohan to do it because he wanted Earth to have another protector in his stead.
Goku was FIGHTING Kid Buu, but lost due to Kid Buu's infinite stamina and regeneration. He was no stronger than Super Buu. Goku was A LOT stronger than he led on. He held back for Vegeta's pride and the reasons I stated above.

My favorite scene from Dragon Ball. Goku's Japanese voice reminds me of Luffy's Japanese voice.

That was a dub line. Goku was never holding back, he just underestimated then strains of SSJ3 on a living body.
Vegetto > Buuhan > Buutenks > Gohan > SSJ3 Gotenks > Buuccolo > Super Buu > Kid Buu >= SSJ3 Goku

Crank up the Bleeding Cool servers folks. This morning we received word that Shueisha Publishing Company of Tokyo has convinced legendary manga creator Akira Toriyama to come back and restart the Dragon Ball comics franchise.
Dragon Ball (also known as Dragon Ball Z) is one of the most lucrative comic book franchises in the world. Initially serialised from 19984 to 1995 in Shonen Jump, it has spun off successful animated TV series and films. It has sold well over 150 million copies of the collected volumes. But since then, the creator has only returned to the well for comics once, for a one-off crossover with One Piece. His other works have been shorter, more personal pieces, though he has continues to oversee new animations, and his studio are working on a Dragon Ball Online MMORG for release soon.
And it’s in that environment that Akira Toriyama has been persuaed to return to creating new chapters. Partly to help promote the game, partly to earn the boat load of cash he has been promised.
Something that will make this event even more spectacular is a simultaneous fully translated worldwide launch of the new book.
The manga industry needs a boost right now. Can you think or any better way?Source: http://www.bleedingcool.com/2010/10/25/the-return-of-dragon-ball/
I don't know what to think of this… but if it's real then Holy Fucking Shit.
(even though I don't get why he says the manga industry needs a boost)
-
Best news ever.
My God.
I hope its real.
-
I hate the whole lets have Vegeta, Piccolo or hell even Yamcha, and while I'm at it why not Chaozu should beat a main villain. Why do some of the fans think Vegeta or Piccolo should beat a main villain? To be honest, that should be the main characters job in a Shonen anime. Now Gohan was a different case. It was like as if Goku passed the torch on to him to become the next hero. To have the main character from this Shonen anime to take over as the main hero. I wouldn't mind if Vegeta and Piccolo went up against lackie type villains such as Android 17, Pui Pui, Dodoria, etc.
The arc that I despise the most in Dragon Ball GT is the Hell Fighter 17 Arc. Sure the villain is cool, but the plot sucked. I hate the whole arc being based around a plot hole that was in the fillers of Dragon Ball Z. When people died, they don't keep their bodies. They just become spirits. Also, why Toei makes hell look all fun is beyond me. But that's beside the point. Goku and the other Z Fighters were on special occasions. Goku kept his body because they rewarded him for sacrificing his life to save "his" planet. Correct me if I'm wrong, but once a year has passed, their body will just disappear and get reincarnated as another person. this would explain the one year wish rule. Also that arc was just nothing but insults to the passed villains that were involved in a plot far superior to that of anything Dragon Ball GT was made up with. Freeza and Cell were treated in vain in this arc.

Not a chance in fuck that it's real.
If anything, we'll get a single chapter relating to Dragon Ball Online.
Maybe with a color page =D
-
What the…
Did Akira Toriyama just Dragon Ball Kai the Dragon Ball manga?
-
so wait, remaking the series or adding new chapters?:wassat:
i'd love for him to make piccolo have a zoro sanji type relationship and make them the same strength, but I don't want them to keep rising the power levels it's getting to ridiculous
-
Considering that Toriyama's gone on about he does not want to draw Goku anymore in every Dragonball-related thing he's done since the series ended, I very much doubt that this is real.
-
it would be cool to see but I doubt this is true
-
It's false, guys.

I think the Dragon Ball series ended where it needed to end. Personally I would of liked it if the series ended with the Namek Arc. Out of any arc in all of Dragon Ball, the Namek Arc was the one that felt the most climatic. Atleast after that, we still get good characters in the Android Arc such as Trunks, 17, 18, Cell, etc. The Majin Buu Arc, there is something that bugs me about kids being able to go Super Saiyan without trying. This is almost like a middle finger to everyone who worked hard to become one. Also, the Super Saiyan 3 transformation has got nothing on when Goku first became a Super Saiyan nor when Gohan first became a Super Saiyan 2. It was just a waste of time. Now Majin Buu can be a very confusing villain. His fat form was hilarous, his evil form didn't get enough screen time, his super form (aswell as Gotenks, Piccolo, and Gohan) was the best form, and his kid form felt like some autistic kid that has an unlimited energy and is having a temper tantrum.

Future Trunks and Cell are shitty characters.

I don't know where exactly to call bullshit on this.
I could start off with Frizza…
-
I'm fairly certain it was his editor and not the Japanese government that forced him to keep writing Dragon Ball.
If I remember right, that editor was a real bitch during the Cell saga too.

No, not really. Kid Trunks is actually fun compared to the other Trunks.
Boring, bland, character, with a boring flashback.
Cell is really when the author fucked his ass over with the plotting.
He's a result of the author's editor being a bitch.
Though gotta admit I like his bug-like design, even though he was generic haughty villain with none of the grace Piccolo and Frieza.
-
If I was Toriyama, I would tell the editor to fuck off.
I'm not going to say that Editors can't be wrong, but Editors are there to help writers. Without them, we would have more series like Bleach running around.
But if I remember right, the Cell saga happened like this:
Toriyama (T) : Okay here are the androids I promised, 19 and 20.
Editor (E) : Sounds good.(A few weeks later)
E: Toriyama your androids look too boring and old, make new ones.
T: Umm, okay. Here are 16, 17, and 18. And one of those androids was really Doctor Gero!
E: Neat!(A few weeks later)
E: Those androids are boring. Make a new villain.
T: All right geez… here's Cell. He was made by the cells of all of the Z warriors.
E: Sweet...wait how?
T: Gero planned it.
E: Works for me.(A few weeks later)
E: Can you change Cell at all?
T: Shit fine, he can absorb the androids to become stronger.(A few weeks later)
T: Here's semi-perfect Cell! I'd like to spend a few weeks with him and-
E: He's ugly. Make him perfect Cell as soon as possible.
T: WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME? -
As for Future Trunks being a shitty character, he is a hell lot better than Present Trunks.

but Editors are there to help writers.
They're also there to make sure the writer makes more money for the publisher.
-
Omigosh guys, I just heard they're making Dragonball AF! Look! Early art!
Totally legit!
-
They're also there to make sure the writer makes more money for the publisher.
Fun fact: Kishimoto's editor is the one that recommended a certain arch-rival be created, which would be one of the leading proponents of Naruto's tragic fall from a story of a lonely underdog seeking acceptance to a convoluted revenge plot focusing on his gay rival.
-
I also like that its an American comics site breaking the story instead of, you know. Shuiesha or something.
But no. Rich Johnston on an obscure american website was their first priority to tell. I'm sure that's how they wanted the story first announced.
-
@JERK:
They're also there to make sure the writer makes more money for the publisher.
True. But more often than not, editors aren't evil. They can just make very stupid decisions now and again.
-
@RobbyBevard:
I also like that its an American comics site breaking the story instead of, you know. Shuiesha or something.
Yeah, listen folks we all miss Dragonball.
But we have to let somethings die, it was a great series, but really don't get your hopes up folks. ( Talking to some of you, not all.)
-
Cripes, Toriyama hated drawing monochrome single character covers for the re-releases.
Doesn't he have a one shot due in a couple issues of Jump? I suppose it COULD be that, but all the other authors have done random new stuff, and you'd think Jump would have touted that more heavily, we knew the OP crossover was coming way in advance, for all that it was 17 pages of utter nonsense.
Not to mention, Toriyama said he enjoyed GT, the american movie, (He was just being professionally polite in both those cases, I assume) and gave us Vegeta's little brother Table in his most recent outing. I'd really rather he… didn't... do anything new.
-
True. But more often than not, editors aren't evil. They can just make very stupid decisions now and again.
Who said they were evil?
Editors assigned and working for a company as big as Shueisha are in part stewards of a property, a MAJOR property. This may make them the enemy of actual plot quality but not EVIL.
-
I don't think any of us have heard anything on Toriyama's one-shot.
Still, would be neat if it was Dragon Ball, but I won't get my hopes up.
-
This should be pretty big evidence against this bullshit.
–The “DragonBall” kanzenban have brought in new readers, and I think that as fans it’s only natural that they’d want to see a new “DragonBall Z” title. What would you think about making a new anime work about once a year or so?
Toriyama: Oh, I’d like to see that.
Nakatsuru: But by the final chapter, Goku had gotten pretty old. And even after that he was the main character for the anime-original “DragonBall GT”. If we’re going to be making stories left and right here, maybe we should rewind time a bit and make them stories set sometime in the past.
Toriyama: I think so too. Instead of continuing the story further and further into the future, it’d be better to do a separate episode style of story development where you go back in time and go “this sort of enemy was here, and this sort of story”. Just say “it wasn’t in the original work, but this sort of story happened”. Maybe that would be better.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Ball:_Yo!_Son_Goku_and_His_Friends_Return!!
From mouth of the man himself
Toriyama: "I think that I probably won't draw any more Dragon Ball manga, so
THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE YOU'RE GOING TO SEE ANYTHING NEW!!!" -
@JERK:
Who said they were evil?

Sorry I got a little carried away by saying evil. I probably should get some sleep.
I agree with you. Editors are there to make sure the series can make them money. But what I'm trying to say is that doesn't necessarily make them an enemy of plot quality.
I'm not going to say that editors can't make mistakes and Jump can be totally wrong on how they want a story to go, but editors can improve a story too. Make suggestions that a writer may not think of. Just because the final product is altered doesn't mean it's bad.
Of course I'm just preaching to the choir now.
-
I don't think any of us have heard anything on Toriyama's one-shot.

We have, we got a preview picture, and it's not Dragonball.
@JERK:

Well, yeah. "Helping the writer" = "helping the writer write stuff that's popular among the target audience so they spend more money on his stuff, something you both benefit from financially".

Future Trunks is Dragonball Z's Poochie.
-
@JERK:
Future Trunks and Cell are shitty characters.
I don't agree, Cell was exactly as someone who would seek perfection should be. He was one of the sliest villain in Dragon Ball, trying to avoid useless fights in order to achieve his goal. After absorbing C-18 and becoming perfect, he just wanted to prove to others and maybe to himself that he was definitely the strongest life form in the whole universe. That's why he organized this Cell Game, that's why he wanted that much Gohan to fight at his fullest.

IT is true story, This was listed in Japan and Korean site where there are far more dragonball infromation compared to Amaercia so if you dont know a jack about Dragonball stop calling other people a moron
and calling Japan a economic god and I bet you dont know anything about Japan econimic history oh and do you know how much money Dragon ball produced when it was at its prime?
just to make it clear I did some web surfing it is stated that the Minister of Culture of Japan asked him not to stop draon ball after Cell Saga.
