I bought the first season of DBZ at the weekend.
Having watched it so many times as a kid and then later when streaming it on the internet, the new dubbing kind of annoyed me for the first few episodes.
Then I got over it and just sat and enjoyed the fuck out of a digitally remastered piece of excellence.

Good news that they are gonna finish kai, although I still wish they would have done a brotherhood or hunter x hunter 2011 and remade it from scratch adaptating the manga as close as possible. But it's Toei, and they are cheap. xD They are doing it for sailor moon though, so why not dragon ball, sigh.

Yeah, up through Vegeta Kai was pacing pretty well. Still leaving in some horrible filler, but I guess that was easier to time some episode scliffhangers on? But mostly moving at a good pace.
Then they got sloppy on Namek. Ugh. I can't believe Frog Bulma was left intact.

I seem to recall that being the point where I just gave up on Kai entirely. I heard some people claim that the reason that bit of filler was kept was because it was, like, too integrated into the canon events for them to remove it or something… I call bullshit on that. All they'd have to do was redraw a couple of group-shots to edit Bulma-Ginyu out of them. Or alternately not use those shots she's in to begin with. Really, sitting through those episodes in Z, the fact that Bulma possessed by Ginyu was there watching Goku fighting Freeza did not strike me as something that should be too hard to edit around.
ALL the Bulma on Namek filler was awful. I get it, the poor anime had very few characters to work with in a long arc, and the awful Kai planet filler only stretched so far, but… they could have, I dunno. Given Nail a bigger role, or shown Popo collecting the dragonballs. Or thought in advance to drag a fourth character to Namek, (Yajirobe? Roshi? Icarus?) Or something.
Vegeta tearing around Namek and collecting the balls while outsmarting almost everybody are some of my favourite parts in the whole of DBZ.
Frog Bulma is the exact opposite end of that spectrum.
I like the Blooma filler. What I don't like is Dragon Ball Kai being poorly stitched together with poorly placed music. ~_~
Yamamuro Tadayoshi is the character designer for Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers. I wonder if that will affect any upcoming Dragon Ball animation?

Going to go and get the Namek Saga later today, I'm totally hooked again.
The amount of time it's been since I gave DBZ a watch through AND how gorgeous the spirit bomb/vegeta's oozaru transformation looked are big factors.
Hey, they did get a better dubbing, with music left intact, and better voice acting with more faithful writing.

Agree, Kai is absolutely cheap. The new content they included to tie things up is looking even worse than the original animation most of the time. The music is worse and overall this whole thing is kinda pointless. A complete remake would have been so much better. But toei will never spend the money on it. Maybe the next time dragonball has a big anniversary.
The new composer is Norihito Sumitomo, from Battle of Gods. That adds to my theory that they'll be using some bgms from the movie.

The broadcast will run in a 130 minute slot with commercials. The One Piece specials have aired in a 130 minute timeslot with their actual lengths of 102-106 mimutes. Yamada Eiko (Mai) Tweeted that she had recorded new scenes. The theatrical cut for Battle of Gods was 85 minutes, meaning this broadcast cut will likely have fifteen or twenty minutes of new scenes. During the storyboarding process of the movie scenes were deleted because the movie would have run for two hours.

Dragon Ball still has regular ongoing production and news. Yeah the original series ended but the world of it isn't dead in the slightest. I mean a new movie for it just came out.

That was more of a snarky comment on my part considering HxH is still technically running, but yeah like Maron said, more Kai is in the works, and Battle of Gods recently came out.
Tanimoto will return to perform the second Dragon Ball Kai Opening song. I see they're pulling a Dragon Ball Z by using a new theme song for the Majin Buu arc.

I own all the Viz bigs. While they are certainly big, with the smaller volumes more comfy to hold, the white, high quality paper and larger size of the canvas was a selling point for me. Find a store. Look at both for comparisson.
Last time I saw an omnibus was a One Piece one. Quality is the same as normal volume but its thickness for that type of binding is a meh. Creases to the spine will happen. I like to keep my manga in top shape.
I hear the new color manga is generally regarded to be the best release Viz has put out. The translation is still the same as always and is a tad iffy in places, and they still censor out Popo's lips due to how they apparently make him look like a racist stereotype, but the quality is excellent and with the exception of that bit of censoring, the artwork has apparently been completely untouched so far. They even left the sound-effects in Japanese. (Though I question their decision to throw all the translations for those at the END of the books, and not, like, throw them in between the panels or something. Who's going to bother flipping to the end of the book every time a sound-effect shows up in order to understand what it means?!)
Other than that I hear the VizBigs are fairly good. They still suffer from some occasional censorship, and they're apparently terribly inconsistent with Toriyama's color-artwork (which is to say, some of his color-pages are retained in color, others are reproduced in grayscale. And there doesn't seem to be any pattern to what gets kept and what doesn't) but the quality is apparently really good.
Avoid the omnibuses. They promise an uncensored release, but at the very least the first printing of volume 1 failed to deliver on that, (though apparently the later volumes are indeed uncensored… again, with the exception of Popo's lips) and also from what I've seen, the paper- and print-quality is pretty abysmal. Also they're done completely in grayscale like the old regular graphic novels, so none of Toriyama's color artwork is retained. Which almost makes it a tad insulting how they also decided to use the Kanzenban covers for this release... (For the record the Kanzenban would be the Japanese re-release of the manga with more chapters per volume, all of Toriyama's color-artwork left intact, and far better paper- and print-quality than the regular volumes. In short, the most beautiful version of the original manga available. aka pretty much the complete opposite of Viz's 3-in-1 releases.)
…Mind you I'm going only by what I've heard from other people and what I've seen from casually flipping through the books in the store here. I never bought the manga in English, I only have the complete series in Norwegian (For the record the Norwegian version is infinitely worse than Viz's on pretty much every level. Well, except it's uncensored) and the Japanese Kanzenban... Plus volume 42 of the regular graphic novels in Japanese, because the Kanzenban slightly changed the ending and I wanted to have both versions of it for completeness's sake.
Dragonball was/is one of my favorite anime/manga series ever.
I've been collecting the "early" parts of Dragon Ball using the recent Viz 3-in-1 editions, with the red covers. ….although my patience isn't very high, and I kinda "cheated" by starting to collect the individual volumes of Viz's "Z" edition. Not the best plan I know, but it's just how I've been doing it.
Also in the first and second volumes of Z that I have (or alternatively, volume 17 and 18 of the series as a whole).....the translation is....interesting. Like Piccolo talks with this formal, almost Shakespearen way of speaking, and it's a little jarring to see.
Piccollo's formal speech pattern was great, appropriate to the character… its a shame the translations got really lazy about it pretty fast.
Also, Chichi retains her accent for all of about 20 seconds at the Budokai, and never again before or after.
So what's the best way to collect the manga? The vizbigs, new omnibuses, or individual volumes?
At this point, the new color manga is the best. Second best is the Vizbigs.

I'll probably go with the Vizbigs due to larger trim size and retained color pages, as well as for consistency of the collection. Too bad there's still censorship though.
I've owned at least one volume from pretty much every version and I bought the first 3 "Omnibus" editions on accident (I preordered them together before the 1st volume hit and forgot to cancel them when it was revealed Vol 1 was censored.)
The Vizbigs are the best physical quality (As in Page Quality and printing Quality) and has the most in regards to Toriyama-colored pages from the original WSJ Run (Tho not all) but you've got to put up with all of the censorship from previous releases. It's all there.
The 3-in-1 Edition with the Kanzenban covers are honestly not as bad as others have made them out to be. The first volume is indeed censored, but Viz claims this is a printing error and indeed, my volume 2 and 3 are completely uncut! Bulma's top being pulled down to coat the invisible Man in Kamesen'in's blood for example is there in all it's glory. Popo doesn't appear in the volumes I own, but I've been told by others his lips are indeed still censored. And… I don't count this as censorship because I think it DOES honestly look better, but Advisor Black's lips are edited too. They aren't removed like Popo's are tho, they're just colored in to be the same color as the rest of his body whereas originally his skin tone was shaded dark but his lips were paper white. Now the lips are the same color as the rest of him, which to me is more fixing an art mistake, but some purists have called foul.
Also, the paper quality IS poor compared to the VizBigs but it isn't as bad as others have made it out to be. I've never felt as if I was in danger of ripping the pages, they all feel like decently sturdy paper altho, sometimes the pages are thin enough that you can see the content on the other side during a casual read. So, while they aren't great, they aren't quite "Hotel Bible" paper quality as I've seen some claim. Another major downside is that it uses the Kanzenban covers... but DOESN'T have color pages period... kinda disappointing.
Also, one thing I find neat about this release, they've said this is gonna be the first time Viz releases the manga titled as it is in Japan. From what Viz promised, this entire release from Pilaf to Boo will simply be called "Dragonball" which I find neat.
The full color edition is amazing. It even includes completely untouched SFX. As someone who knows Japanese, I don't mind that they aren't translated till the back because I know what they mean, but I can see how that'd upset some. Again, Popo's lips appear to be censored, but no other censorship has (yet) been observed in them. I haven't seen any either but I don't remember the Saiyan stuff being too heavily cut. The only downside I can gleam from these, is I can see some purists who don't like the color and want it as originally printed.
Also, they started at Z (as is customary for some reason...) and there is presently no indicator there will be a release of the original DB... so yeah, It's probable they will, but you never know.
All of these use the same translation so no sense comparing. It's the same translation Viz has used for decades, tho, the 3-in-1 and Full Color releases haven't yet gotten to Mr. Satan, Djinn Boo, and Vegerot... it'd be neat to see if they do any different there, at LEAST the supposedly "uncensored" 3-in-1 edition should leave "Mr. Satan" intact, so they don't have to edit the "SATAN CITY" stuff... but we'll see.

Overall, I'd say if quality is your thing and you like color, the Full Color Edition.
If you want it in its original black and white, I'd go with the 3-in-1 actually due to the being nearly uncut.

I remember in the manga Roshi says at the end of the King Piccolo arc that the manga will continue for a tad longer (he also did this near the beginning of the Buu arc). I think that's what Viz was trying to go for

It's like the infamous "Will Luffy and Ace survive?" Only this time it was an inserted joke not in the original.

Though one thing that strikes me as a bit weird... Like, I bought most of the Kanzenban in actual bookstores during my stay in Japan, with only the last 8 or so being bought off Amazon... The volumes I got off Amazon were inexplicably of better quality than the ones I got in the stores. Which is to say, I would occasionally see some printing-errors or the ink being slightly smudged and such in the ones I bought in the stores, (the worst case by far being volume 20, where somehow the imprint of a completely different page could be seen in the black sections of the page…) whereas none of this happened with the ones I got on Amazon. Those were completely impeccable.

The also did this at the end of the final chapter of the Pilaf arc. In the original the narrator says something like "No no… this isn't the end, the story will continue on, at least for a little while", and VIZ changed it to "We're gonna keep going-and going-and going-!!". It's kinda funny if you're a first-time reader.
