Naoki Tate worked on Dragon Ball?!
Yup, here's a
. His styles changed a bit over the years, but I believe he also did the recent Tarble special, too.Hell, I'd wet my pants if they brought on the guy who did Dragon Ball Z #279 (Super Saiyan 2 Gokû v. 'Kid' Majin Boo). That guy was the best at both detailed and fluid animation.
Speaking of which, here's

Finally saw Movie 8 tonight…for some reason it had an interesting concept but Broly...just felt like a need to show "a Saiyan who is completely psychotic who happens to be uber-powerful." There were inconsistencies and WTF moments (magic bubbles that can make Saiyans survive in space from...the destruction of home by Frieza? Goku's "friends fusion" thingie near the end? Piccolo's magical appearance...even if it was awesome to see him chew Vegeta out) but...it's an anime movie based on a popular TV show so that's typical. Though...Goku in a suit was just awkward and silly. (though for some reason I like how Goku is depicted in this going between badass and goofy, somehow feels like his character compared to those who rather have him the former)
-
That was Broli's ki protecting him.
-
@Yuugi's:
That was Broli's ki protecting him.
Doesn't change that it didn't work like that in any other circumstances.

Pretty much: previous knowledge pretty much explains that Saiyans are a race that needs air to breathe (unlike, say, Frieza's) and can't really exist in the dead of space. Let alone the fact that they can suddenly create "ki bubbles" is just ridiculous and was just a convenient way for Broly and Paragus to survive Frieza…but then again, in this stupid universe, any Saiyan of importance save King Vegeta (who was badass BTW) survived the planet's destruction...and let's not get into the idiots who want to create their own Saiyans.

I don't really agree that much, since there are still only a very small amount of Saiyans around.
But the Ki Bubble is still stupid. Vegeta was much stronger than Broly as a baby, and he still traveled in a spaceship. It's just silly.

It may still be small but Toriyama set up at least the fact that "there were four and only four after Frieza was done with them". Yet that really doesn't stop all these people who seem to make it like the Saiyans are the only race that matter and such.

4 Sayins… Not counting Vegeta's retarded little brother Table.
And Broli having unheard of powers that no one else did is fine... he is the legendary Super Saiyin after all. He had a power of 10,000... naturally. At rest. Even as a baby when he was actually using energy, who knows what ridiculous levels it would go to.
Fucker destroyed 1/4 of the universe in a single blast. He's allowed craziness.

Most of his craziness is because of Goku crying in the same nursery. I can understand psychos but Broly is just petty.

He blew up those little aliens' planet in a single blast all the way from New Vegeta, but I don't think he destroyed 1/4 of the universe.
It just stated that Broly was wrecking the Southern Galaxy, who knows how long he had been doing it, though.
-
The thing we have to remember is that he was only the 'Legendary Super Saiyan' in the films. Otherwise, Gokû technically is (being the first Super Saiyan to appear, ever…at least in the comic's continuity).
-

Giant explosion in the opening moments of the movie, and its gone. Kaio comments that its gone. And in one of the later movies, the southern Kai gets teased about her galaxy being destroyed.
Far as movie continuity goes. Broli destroyed 1/4 of the universe.
I think.
Doesn't really matter. He's absurdly powerful is what it boils down to and activated Super with apparently, no training or effort whatsoever. He gets special cheap powers, its okay.
-
If Broli destroyed the Southern Galaxy destroyed then where did the movie take place?
-
Supposedly before the Cell Games, since Gohan turned Super Saiyan. Though really, the movies don't really follow the continuity of the series. Look how well the Garlic Jr. arc tried and screwed that up.

Don't remember that scene. I'll be honest, I haven't watched movie 8 in a long time, so I may have forgotten that, but the way I remember it was King Kai saying Broly had been wreaking havoc all over the Southern Galaxy. I guess a single big boom is possible.
Don't remember the teasing of South Kai in the movie either. Also, South Kai is the pink man, so the teasing of "her" doesn't make sense. The female Kai is East Kai. In the Other World Tournament filler, they tease East Kai for having weak fighters, though.
-
Wait… Didn't Goku warp over to some planet in the south that Broly royally fuck up? As in it was left intact enough for someone to take a peak?
-
So, anyone watching the Kai Dub?
New Freeza voice = Amazing!
-

I didn't mean the time, I meant the place as in location.
-
The only nitpicky thing about putting Movie 8 before the Cell Game is simply that Goku and Gohan…were SSJ full time at the time. Remember: when they emerged from the "Hyperbolic Time Chamber", they chose to remain SSJ full time to sort of try and figure out the secret of mastering and achieving a better version of "advancement". (ultimately tied to Gohan's "anger boost") Besides, the movies never really count as continuity anyway considering how screwy things get.

Would the Bardock thing be considered movie canon or real canon?
-
@Cyan:
Would the Bardock thing be considered movie canon or real canon?
Bardock the character is canon. The History Of Trunks is mostly non-canon because it's different from the Manga, but the main idea behind it is canon, Yo Son Goku And His Friends Return! is canon. Other than that nothing about the movies are canon.
-
The canon nature of the Movies and specials is a mixed bag, but MOST of the movies could not possibly have taken place anywhere in the timeline.
Movie 1 - Everyone knows who Gohan is, Gohan knows who Piccolo is, but he hasn't been trained yet, an his dad is Alive. Couldn't have happened.
Movie 2 - Gohan is trained, but Son, Piccolo, and Yamucha are all alive at the same time. The latter two should have been dead after the Saiyan arc. Couldn't have happened.
Movie 3 - Same conflict as Movie 2
Movie 4 - Same conflict as movies 2&3
Movie 5 - Takes place After Namek, but Son isn't yet able to go Super Saiyan at Will. He was able to do that by the time he reached earth. Couldn't have happened
Movie 6 - Might have fit in the training period before the Cyborg's arrival, since Nobody but Son saw Vegeta turn Super Saiyan, but relies on Movie 5 so, like Garlic Jr. it couldn't have happened.
Movie 7 - Gero was killed in the beginning of the movie, so it happens after that, but through the course of the movie, nobody mentions 17 and 18's rampage, and Gohan can't turn Super Saiyan. Couldn't have happened
Movie 8 - Best place for this to have happened was the 7 day wait for the Cell Games, but Son and Gohan made a point to be Super Saiyan AT ALL TIMES during that time, they were not SS at all times in this film. Couldn't have happened
Movie 9 - Could have occurred. Between Cell and Boo. Trunks states he's going back to see everyone after he Kills Cell in his timeline, and when he first met Son, Son said he was unable to become Super Saiyan at will just after achieving the form, Gohan could have had similar problems with Super Saiyan 2.
Movie 10 & 11 - Movie 8 couldn't have happened, these rely too heavily on that movie.
Movie 12 - There was never a period where both Son and Vegeta were dead and there wasn't the whole "Boo" Problem going on. Couldn't have happened.
Movie 13 - Could easily have happened between episodes 288 and 289 of the series. The Burdock Special was declared Canon by Toriyama because he liked the character so much.
The Trunks special was pretty much the same as the manga, though the presentation was different. Trunks is ALWAYS super Saiyan in the manga, while the Anime he went SS after Gohan's Death. -
Movie 6 - Might have fit in the training period before the Cyborg's arrival, since Nobody but Son saw Vegeta turn Super Saiyan, but relies on Movie 5 so, like Garlic Jr. it couldn't have happened.
Don't forget the two biggest problems: Dende is God and everyone knows where New Namek is, neither of which were the case until just prior to the Cell Games.
Anyway…
So, anyone watching the Kai Dub?
New Freeza voice = Amazing!Oh yes, indeed. I was apprehensive about the new voice after Thursday night's episode, but this one just blew all those worries away. I'm loving Chris Ayres' take on Freeza so far; finally, the English-language representation that the character deserves!
I can't wait for the new voices, heck ALL the new voices from Kai, to start popping up in the games and such, as we've been told they will.
-
Goku was dead most of the time that Vegeta was. A lot of those things technically could have happened, they just probably wouldn't, but they're non-canon anyways so I don't really care.
Movie 13 contradicts Gohan's strength in canon.
Almost the entire History Of Trunks Movie was different from the Manga. Gohan already had his arm lost from the get go as well in the Manga. Plus Android 17 he wasn't even using half his power against Gohan before. None of that happens in the Movie. The only thing that was the same was the basic idea behind it. All the details behind it were completely different.
-
Just finished watch the new episode of the Kai dub. Love the new voices of both Frieza and Zarbon.
-
Look how well the Garlic Jr. arc tried and screwed that up.
Well, I'm certainly glad that they removed that entire arc from Dragonball Kai.
Bardock the character is canon.
Indeed. It seems that Toriyama liked him so much, he even introduced him in the comic book himself.
Not to mention that Bardock was shown in a flashback during the first episode of Dragonball Kai.
-
I remmeber the GBA game Buu's Fury managed to fit (a no doubt abridged version) of the Janemba movie into the timeline by having it be like a side adventure Goku had after he went back to the afterlife (basically, he returns and finds that everything's messed up). I've never seen the movie though, so I don't know how true or not the game was to the movie.
-
Watching Kai now….and Freeza's new voice is fantastic! Way better than Young, I'll admit.
Is it me, or is Dodoria now voiced by John Swasey(sp)?
-
Geez, Frieza's new voice is so charismatic and evil. I love listening to it. It's probably because they're on the same network, but it reminds me of Grey DeLisle's Azula, but hey, they're both great animation villains. Now I'm so curious how that voice will adjust during it's transformations.
-
For some reason I have gone and reread Dragonball chapter 329-403.
This gave me quite a nostalgic experience. I have remembered watching this for the first time, the german dub, I think, everyday running back home in the evening to turn on the tv. Back then, 8 years ago, this seemed so thrilling and even scary - after the chaos of cyborgs, to see the abandoned time machine, the egg, the larva, and then to encounter the ugly monster Cell.
Also, I can't help but like Son Goku's character.
Stereotypical, shounen, shut the fuck up.
I just enjoy all of him. Seeing him so calm before the Cell Games. Seeing him give Cell a senzu bean.Good times. Good comic. Good series.
!
-
Er, why is that panel reversed?
-
Because online manga readers are the worst thing.
I think today I have seen all the examples of bad scanlate, from dumb overlevelling to mirroring or even lol!Korean edition.
And I didn't care at all. That's how nostalgia works.
-

Not true at all, really. In the movie all dead villains come to Earth, like Freeza who is killed by Gohan later on, yet Gohan is training on the Kaioshin's planet. Goten and Trunks fight Hitler and fuse, even though they shouldn't know the dance fully yet. And of course the fact that there is no trace of Buu in the movie, when he should be rampaging the Earth.

Even Hitler acknowledged the irony in being beaten by blonde dudes with green eyes.

I'm really liking dragonball z kai. It's mondo cool.
-
That's right boys, mondo cool….
-
I guess I'm in a minority when I say I enjoyed Freeza's old voice :v (The world destoryer having the voice of an old woman just made him creepier to me)
I prefer the new Gohan's voice though.
I've been following the show on nicktoons every single day and I've been loving it. So much action and it makes me go eawhburaewijrb, awesome!
-
Gohan's old voice was horrific so of course.
-
Listening to Zarbon,Freeza and Dodoria…they new voices are cool
Zarbons new voice fits him ( cant wait to hear his monster voice)
Freezas though i have to get used to, it works for the character though -
bought first season of kai and i love it, I need to show my cousin who's getting into anime the series since it's like the most well known series ever and a huge turning stone in how mangas are written, and has influenced so many series and it's just fucking awesome one of the best series ever
-

Didn't work for me when you had lines such as:
"That technique looks like it could become haaandy some day.
"Here, you can use it as a back scratcher."
"Hold on, I almost forgot. I never transform unless somebody gives me a countdown!"
"Ride 'em, cowboy!"
"You cut off my tail and now I'm going to eat you!"
"We could have been so good together."
"Whatever turns you on, big boy."
"Pop goes the weasel."I felt more and more embarrassed listening to Freeza in English every time.
-

I just enjoy all of him. Seeing him so calm before the Cell Games. Seeing him give Cell a senzu bean.of course he's the Stereotypical shounen character because he's what defines the classic shouen character tons of people use him as an example when making their main character without him we wouldn't have the classic shouen character

Oh yea….."that" line of dialogue and dont forget the terrible acting of Sean Schemmel just to make the fight between Goku and Freeza much more cancerous.

It wasn't like the former dub did anything better with Frieza's "caressing his balls" line.
-
And people wonder why anime gets scrutinised so much for "inapropriate content" :P
-

Don't forget telling Ginyu that'd he'd scratch his belly and give him milk if he were a pet. :wassat:
-
Well I'm not surprised.
Most of Freiza's minions were pretty boys, and they HAD to get it from somewhere.
