-A main character, with a straw hat, and rubber ability (not fire, water, wind,… something sound cool), is a unique idea.
-Three swords style--> very unique.
-The variety of way to laugh.

- The interactive world. One Piece isn't just limited to a small area like so many other stories. Instead, it holds an entire world where characters of all different islands and countries have their own culture and role to play in the story. When Luffy does something huge, it actually is huge and concerns the entire world, instead of just those close to him.
And the current war speaks for this point more than anything else. The whole Odaverse trembles in fear of the outcome and it's consequences, whatever they may be.

Yeah laughs, 3 swords style. And um… Grand Line that is, but its kind of one tube of adventures now on... but same time superb huge world with everything fun... what these moments of manga dosnt use! Damn to waste such rich and deep world. Moar adventures, sail that damn sea! Big hopes for the new world! But yeah, biggest unique of OP is Oda himself. Some twist were superb, some little... generic. AND some are pure shit yeah, even fan can say that.

One of the things I most appreciate about One Piece is how the characters interact more realistically between each other than in most other manga - far more than in any shonen, that's for sure. They joke around with each other and take NOTICE of how each other act.. Luffy imitating Sanji's "cool guy" persona back in Skypia? Usopp leaving the crew because he's NOTICES and FEELS he is the weakest and wants to do something about it? I'm not sure how to describe it really.. I always feel like I fall short of what I mean in this regard. I just see the bonds between the characters in One Piece being much more realistic - how real people might actually act around each other.

Interesting thread, I can't wait to see more thoughts. I honestly watch zero anime and read zero manga except for One Piece. But comparing it to other manga I noticed right off the bat how unique it looked compared to the rest of them. It was the anime that got me first, and I saw a glimps of Axe Hand Morgan and thought, wow an axe for a hand, never seen that before. Then I saw Kuro and was like woah! Thats basicly a katana on each finger! Luffy's stretching was also very interesting visualy to me, becuase every other stretching power I had seen was never used quit like his. Mr fantastic would always be making shapes of course, just like plastic man, but never have I seen them windup their arms like luffy to bounce the punch back like that.
Then I opened a Shonen Jump one day and saw that it was almost exactly like the anime and wondered which came first. I should have known better than that.
But comparing it to other comics I love that One Piece doesn't kill characters only to have them braught back to life a few years later. I hate it sooooo much! I'm glad Pell did what he did and was shown to survive within the next few chapters! Fodder dying as well as people dying in the past is good enough for me. But the moment someone really does die, and 5 years later we find out that Vegapunk dug up his grave and did something to revitalize him I will be extremely pissed. I don't know how you all can take that in other manga and american comics.
I also love that I have cried not because of death scenes but because of touching, heart warming scenes or some kind of scene of great achievement. And there are allot of them in One Piece.
Last thing is this isn't a one man show. I'm glad Luffy doesn't take on everyone! I'm glad Luffy can't take on everyone and someone even weaker than him has to take over.
Makes everyone absolutely important.

- The huge secondary cast, that sometimes overshadows the crew.
- The numerous details in each flashback, so much that it could be a manga of its own (Robin, Brook…)
- The fact that the crew is not almighty, and is powerless in front of characters with overwhelming power and charisma (shichibukai, yonkou, admirals...)
- The huge storyline, incredibly well thought and completely coherent, with clues scattered all along...
- The unpredictability : Oda knows how to lead the readers the wrong way, only to always manage to surprise them in the end
Oh, and how could I forget? The EMOTION : One Piece makes you laugh, cry, and even laugh and cry at the same time.

For me is the endless of Odas imagination, he knows how to plan for the best effect as well. The variety of his chacters, how meaningful they are and the interaction between them. The theme of freedom and to live to the fullest is quite fetching too.

Besides the already writen agruments, the fact that the unige powers of the strong guys are better reasoned.
"I ate a fruit that is cursed by teh devil, so I got tose powers" is imo way better than "Thats mah jutsu" "Thats mah swords power" "I can that 'cause Im cool" -

I'm usually much mor into shoujo than shounen because of that. Most shounen mangas are really stupid, just a long list of 'people getting stronger'.
I like the storyline. It's rich and well knitted.
And I hope Laboon will have a happy ending.

What makes One Piece unique?
Well, I'd say firstly the locations. East Blue wasn't all that unique, but the Grand Line has had some pretty cool settings. My favorite right now is Sabaondy. I really haven't seen anything like that in any other anime/manga I've read. I also liked Whiskey Peak, Ring Long Ring and Water 7(and even though there are quite a few fictional locations based on Venice, this has stood out the most to me).
Secondly some powers are actually pretty original and if they're not all that original, they are at least really creatively used. For example Robin's, Kizaru's and Blueno's fruits are all pretty original and Luffy's fruit is very creatively used. Every character that is ever made of rubber could go Gear 2nd or 3rd, but it was first thought of with Luffy.
Thirdly there aren't many anime/manga about pirates out there.
Fourthly the balance between serious and funny, which adds a lot more unpredictability to the story, like Duval, even the moment with Water Luffy or the moment with Luffy in the beginning of Amazon Lily. I find that to be a really unique trait of One Piece.
And finally the fifth thing I find unique about One Piece is the character development.
Some people that hate One Piece keep saying it has no character development at all.
However, in reality people don't change easily and the changes in characters are really gradual. That's what I like. When something bad happens, the characters move on and while it doesn't cause any huge changes in character, some subtle changes still happen. A lot of anime/manga make characters change very abruptly when a season is over and a new one begins. It seems a lot more gradual in OP, it might be because of the length and I might be reading too deep into it, but I really like that there is such a realistic aspect in such a goofy series like One Piece.
The little things like Nami giving away treasure and Luffy actually acting like a captain in Thriller Bark, Nami standing up and doing some pretty courageous feats in Water 7, Ussop having the bravery to challenge Luffy to a duel or Zoro willing sacrifice himself for the crew seemed kinda unbelievable, yet fitting at the same time. I really can't imagine that these things could happen earlier in the series.

The attention to detail over such an epic scale.
There are many other mangaka who can create an incredibly detailed story, with seemingly minor events/conversations/characters proving later to be important, but I can't think of any whose stories and worlds are this huge. I can remember the excitement when I visited these forums around chapter 500 and someone posted a picture of Silvers Rayleigh way back in the beginning of the story; Oda provides an experience outside of reading the manga itself.

Story- It keeps getting richer and deeper, and more fantastic.
Characters- Cartoony yet realistic. The character personalities and behaviors are definitely shonen archtypes, but the earlier characters like Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Ussop, and Sanji have personalities that change gradually. Chopper and Robin are changing too, although not as much yet.
Settings- It's so varied. Each adventure itself feels like a whole new world.
Background info- In the beginning, there was barely any, but each arc adds piece by piece. No pun intended.
Details- Chekhov's gunmen. One Piece has so many details that later become important, one has to wonder if anything in the manga is filler. I wonder if Gaimon will come back with a vengeance (by which I mean he becomes important later on.)

Joking aside, I think what really makes One Piece unique is the amount of details and creativity in an epic saga. It's rarely seen in other stories of any form. Oda-sensei has planned from the beginning and scattered many clues and foreshadowing. It's always exciting to find bits and pieces of references when rereading the older chapters.

The many different scenarios, I mean, in the Grand Line each island had a different theme, therefore was very unique.
The way characters interact, as it was said, characters are aware of what happens around them, unlike other mangas where the characters fail to notice obvious things in others. (for example, in other mangas, the rest of the crew would have realized that zoro always gets lost)
but the most important to me: everything seems to have a purpose, sooner or later, every character or element of the story will reappear with a purpose, there are no useless designs (or at least very few)

For me the thing that makes it different is the fact that it's based on a journey.
In pratically all the other manga, journeys play a small part and they are about missions, alternating between HQ and different places. (I'm looking at you, Naruto and Bleach)
In One Piece, the crew don't go back to a place they've already visited.(Except for nescessary shit, like Water7 - Enies Lobby - Water7) They're all headed in one direction.
And no arcs purely based on training!

Part of what makes One Piece unique is Oda's high level of character design. He is extremely creative this way, never making a character that can easily be mistaken for another (he has got better at this over time as well.)
A major thing I think about One Piece is it has a lack of limits, a world where anything can happen. The kind of story that can move in any direction. The lack of barriers between comedy, action and drama.

I'd definitely say the structure of the world is very unique. The calm belts, Log poses, Grand /Red Lines, Seasonal Islands, Reverse Mountain, how magnetism works to get to another island. Not to mention the Sky Islands and Fisman Island. Very imaginative.

Everything I wanted to say has been said. A good story can make you laugh, cry, and laugh while you're crying like someone has stated already.
The animals are always cute and weird, or just weird.
The creativity and good planning has pulled me in since the very start. Character design is a big factor.
No training arcs … no emos ... no one dying and then coming back forty times ... Yeah, everything has been said.

This is easy. The best thing about OP is that there is no need for long and detailed explanation for every fighting moves. It's just pure-adrenaline-pumping action. No more explanation about the origin of devil fruit or how did zoro perform the ashura move. Some manga explains things too detailed, like the function of chakra (like It's gonna do me any good in the real life).
And also, The comedy. Don't matter how hard the situation, or how sad, Oda somehow put in one or two panel that makes us giggle. And this doesn't change until today..

I loved all three of them at the beginning, but then Naruto and Bleach quickly became repetitive and boring, while OP got better and better :D

For me, it's the fights. I mean, the choreography of them. Luffy vs Lucci is a prime example.
Luffy does a Gatling, Lucci dodges them and puinches, which luffy blocks with his shin. Luffy throws a left punch, which Lucci blocks with his arm. He kicks rapidly at Luffy's exposed right side, but luffy blocks with his arms and does a double kick. Lucci blocks the first with his elbow, then ducks inder the second and rankyaku's Luffy from below.This is two pages. The pacing is natural, and it is very clear what is happening.
They don't just trade their named uber-power attacks, with space for talking in between, or rapid-lighting-fast-strikes-you-can't-even-follow-this-shit-omg and then one guy sends the other flying.
One Piece isn't that, it's better.

Probably the fact that all of the main cast remains relevant, no matter how far the story goes. Nowadays, most manga tend to undergo 'Super Saiyan Syndrome', where only a few characters out of a cast of dozens of unique and interesting characters get development or victories, no matter how popular the other members of the cast are. For example, Saiyans in Dragonball, Shinigami in Bleach, Team 7 in Naruto; One Piece doesn't have that. Even in the Thriller Bark arc, where the crew fought the minions of a Shichibukai who had travelled to the New World, Usopp, the weakest member of the crew, was still capable of defeating a foe.

The biggest thing for me is that One Piece doesn't make you feel awkward when there is a joke. For example, in Naruto it just makes you feel weird when they do one of their idiotic jokes that no one over 9 laughs at, in One Piece the jokes are funny, and even if they're not it doesn't make you feel embarassed that you're even watching the show.
Also, just how the anime is not centered around purely getting stronger. Some of the strawhats try to gain strength, but that is purely so they can continue their adventure(Barring Zoro).

For me, it's the amazing unique cast of characters, places and powers. Not to mention that the characters get stronger as the series goes instead of the normal random training at super fast speeds. It is the characters gradual growth that makes it so great.
