One Piece Overrated?

I'll retreat unless another hero spawns a new era and argues the same stuff i was, such as firecrouch

Is it really so hard to just read the manga? If you don't continue in this ridiculous fashion after coming back, you DO earn some points.

i just prefer the anime though. It'd be easier to argue with u guys but I just prefer the anime over the manga too much. When i first read the first three volumes, and u can call me crazy but, I really didn't enjoy them as much as when I watched the anime.

But Firecrouch has read the manga. All the way up to the current chapters.

I can hear the mouthbreathing from this thread even while I'm away from my computer.

Well, people here can't really be that kind of hero. This still is a OP board and you have to come up with really good defences in order to make a point that it is overrated.
One Piece is save to say one of the best stories imho. The art quality is good, but the style might not be likeable for everybody more or less than that can't be said.
I also have reasons to think that Oda made the art this way on purpose so you can see the characters getting more muscular etc etc. Much like the art of DB into DBZ series. Where you first see a chubby Goku evolving into a muscular machine.
The best thing of this all is that you can see the growth the best in the anime. Imho the marineford arc allready looks very DBZ'ish in the style of drawing powerfull guys. In special this scene:

This may be the dumbest and strangest analysis of One Piece's art I've ever read. And it's not even some dumb otaku complaining about how people aren't all rainbow haired bishies with huge watery eyes.

You say that now when you read it … how many months/years ago?
In other words, shut up, and pick up where you left off.

No one can plan art styles out like that.

-
How does one 'plan' art styles. What the hell does this guy even mean by that.
-
right now Hiei will look like a bat-sized vampire with exploding hair, but OHOHOHO, in 50 or so chapters, bitches be lining up at his door!
-
My joke is ruined by discovering he actually asked for a ban on the next page.
Oh well.
-
Ohey look. Tori's banned.
-
it's okay, bobby, we knew you weren't perfect in the beginning
-
I'm sorry but u were directly attacking the anime, and saying that filler isn't OP. However, I'm saying that it fits into the story and that I consider it OP. The post I was replying to u weren't talking about the manga at all so i jumped in. If we're attacking the anime then I can come in but then when u talk about the manga i cant. I understand that. We arent directly talking about the manga so I don't see how I can't join in. The only other OP manga ive read are a few chapters of episodes every once in a while just to see what the manga looked like, and I read the May, June and July American shounen jump magazines at my school but that doesn't really count.
Thats exactly it dude.
You cant talk about the pacing in the anime when you have no idea how the original was paced and how much of a fuck up they made of it.
You cant talk about whats canon or whats not when you have no idea having not read the manga. If it wasn't in the manga then it wasn't intended to be there. Any guff which some anime studio writer can come up with might seem to flesh out more of the characters but if it didn't come from the pen of the guy who created it then it doesn't count for shit. Theres only one guy who knows the characters that well.
Filler wouldn't be too much an problem had the anime staff actually used the filler that was actually given to them instead of Buggy making shite jokes for episodes on end. Some of the cover stories could easily be fleshed out into 2-3 episode filler arcs and would actually help to drive the story forward.
You have to know both to know the similarities and differences. If you don't know this then you aren't qualified to join in the discussion.
EDIT:
n/m you gone done banned him. What name will he join under next then?

You do know the art style in that arc varied each episode, right? That's probably the only time they looked that muscular.
-
@JERK:
One Piece is Oda, plain and simple.
Truer words do not exist. Anime only viewers are missing out on the purest form of One Piece - the one that comes strait from the creators brush. Look, I like the anime and I really enjoy some of the filler and there is nothing wrong with enjoying the non-canon stuff (like most of the films) but anyone arguing that filler is canon needs to stfu and gtfo now.
-
His ban made a terrible addition to the good banned people in the Nausicaa thread but it's still fine. May his soul not rest.

Poor Tori. His greatest flaw was his naivety.

That, too. May he return a better man.
But he probably doesn't know how to change his IP. -
!
And in that scene, Luffy and the admirals stay silent in the exact same positions for 32 seconds. That seemed a little drawn out to me, and is another example for tori22. If he sees this.
-
I've enjoyed various moments of the anime (and seeing how it ADAPTS some of my favorite moments. I feel the crew confronting Robin at Enies lobby was very touching and well done, played out just how I imagined it when I read it, well, around all the padding and flashbacks. But the meat of the scene hit the mark.), and I like hearing the seiyuu do their thing, but other than that, there are particular moments that just don't live up to how I perceived them when reading the manga. Or simply lack the intensity or original feeling it gave me.
Oz getting pummeled by nightmare luffy's storm just looked so much more brutal and intense as a single drawn panel than animated and looking… well quite frankly, weak.
The manga is the real deal. The full freaking meal. The Hors d'oeuvre, the soup, the main course, the dessert... hell, even the tableware and restaurant itself.
The anime is an option. But if it's your only option, then IMO, you are really limiting yourself. And missing out. Thinking that you get everything and more (filler) with the show is kinda foolish.
I literally have been watching the current Whitebeard war with some buddies while drinking and ripping on almost every scene.. and we're big One Piece fans.
The anime is just sooooo bad right now.

@JERK:
How does one 'plan' art styles. What the hell does this guy even mean by that.
According to Oda:
Q: I was going to ask about your art style. Do you have any particular artist's style that influenced you?
A: I created my style back in elementary school. I think everyone has a period of copying someone else's work. For me, it was Kinniku-man and Fist of the North Star. But I think the effect Dragon Ball had on me was the biggest. I must say that I really drew a lot of Mr. Toriyama's art, so I think I still carry on that habit to this day.Q: But you have your own distinct style.
A: It's a style that I created on purposed. It wasn't something that came out of me naturally. I just wanted to draw in a way that other people weren't drawing in. For instance, I had a hard time making all of the eyeballs really small. In the beginning, it was difficult, and the right eye and left eye would be shifting from one another. If I looked at Wanted! right now, I can tell it's rather shifty. It was, after all, the first manga that I drew after switching to that style. But as I drew it more and more, I liked it more and more as well. That is why I went through with it, no matter what anybody said. For that style, when the eye shifts even a few tenths of millimeters (rika's note: a millimeter is 1/25 of an inch!) it gets in the way of expressing emotions. When you want the character to see straight, you really have to draw the eyeball in a position to make them see straight. You can fudge it a lot if you have big eyes… It's fun because you can't fool anyone with eyeballs that small. -
@JERK:
This is akin to me like saying I'm missing out on some cool arc in a different series. Maybe I am, but I'm not missing anything One Piece.
This is one of things I can never get about the anime people. One Piece is too unique a series in it's style and tone and vision for me to tolerate filler, it's DIRECTLY tied to Oda in my mind. Good or no, and I have seen filler in OP I thought was decent, I for instance kind of liked the stuff about the prisoners Robin hung out with when she got sent to that huge bridge.
I liked it, but never for one second was it really One Piece. One Piece is Oda, plain and simple.
Don't even tell me G8 is One Piece. And I repeat..
They don't flesh out jack shit.
See an argument like this is built off a near hilarious assertion that Oda isn't doing something, and people who make a career off padding on whatever they can to meet pre-planned running times are.
You can never win this argument, you're arguing from an obscenely silly premise.
Nothing is fleshed out. Filler is fat by nature. Flab.
People can be great huge fans of OP's adaptation.
But that is a different thing.
Post amazing tracks. Try to genuinely impress me.
G-8 is still "One Piece", not the original "One Piece" but essentially it keeps the spirit of the story alive and ties into the canon quite nicely. I'm not the kind of person that believes just because a story is being reinterpreted by a different artist it doesn't mean it can't be held in high regard.
Some of the filler does add to the story. Little moments like in recent episode where Coby picks up a fallen soldier's locket or those episodes after Alabasta with the crew just hanging out on the boat I felt complemented the canon material pretty well.
And how the heck does what I say imply that Oda should be less highly-regarded than the animators? Oda's doing making the story, the animators are adapting it and adding some stuff here and there, everybody wins.
The anime-only viewers and the manga-readers are essentially enjoying the same story. The anime is faithful enough to the manga that people that are exclusively enjoying it in one medium and some in another can talk amongst each other about the same things.
And what kind of music do you consider impressive? I don't have any particular tracks off the top of my head, almost all of them are great. Just try looking through the OSTs online and give a listen and see what you like. I might post something later.
And yes I've read every single chapter of "One Piece".
-
Tori and AlmostLegendary.
Crackdown bitches!
-
This thread is hilarious. I think the reason i love the anime so much is that i started watching One Piece with the 4kids dub so ANYTHING i better. I will admit any day of the week though that the manga is better, a shit ton better,
-
I've seen The Shining so I basically get Stephen King's message.
EDIT: bad example - I was in a hurry.
-
I think, One Piece is too-underrated. But as long as Oda continues publishing it, it doesn't matter. =) Been reading/watching for 7 years now.
My favourite arc is Arlong Park. The quote that got me addicted:
(Luffy says)"I can't use swords, I can't cook, I can't navigate, I can't even lie, I need nakama to help me continue living."…
(Arlong says)"If you are so useless, why they follow you as Captain?"...
(Luffy says)"Cuz I can beat the crap out of YOU!"...And somemore...
(On the way to Vivi's hometown, Zoro explains to Chopper)"Is teamwork really about helping each other? ... I do my part, you do your part, if you don't do your part, I will come and kick your ASS!"
(In Enies Lobby, Sanji says to Ussop)"You do what I can't do, I do what you can't do..."I think what attracts me most to One Piece, is the depth of the story:
- Nakama, Friendship
- Revenge? Will Luffy take revenge on BB?
- What is Justice? Each character has its own views on justice.
- World Order? What has the anicent kingdom got to do with One Piece? I'd like to know.
- Dragon? Why is he setting up a Revolt army?
- Devil Fruits? Vegapunk, please explain.
- Haki. If Vice admirals have Haki, do the 3 admirals have Haki? Is Haki common?
- Why did the war stop after Shanks came?
- Characters don't just disappear. They appear on covers. Oda doesn't forget used characters.
- And more… basically, One Piece answers the question: Why do characters do what they do? What are their motives?
Oda has this unique ability to build climax better than almost all other mangakas, and even writers. Most writers screw up mid-way and the story becomes crap.
Good example: Bleach, I liked Bleach's first few arcs, then the author decided to overpower it. Suddenly, Bankai is something everybody knows. Suddenly, as long as you are not Visoreds, you're weak, etc.

That's the very least of Bleach's problems.

I disagree with Jerk on One Piece 'being the best shounen ever drawn' it's no doubt unique in it's sense of world and art but I'm confident there will be shonen that will surpass what Oda has done. Oda will inspire future manga artist in the future and one of those folks he inspires will surpass him….it's ultimately possible to surpass One Piece at what it does.

I think DB has the best shonen action ever . It's the manga equivalent to Star wars because of the impact it had. It's aged pretty well in this age and quite awesome It has many flaws but still great and iconic.

Yes it's a seinen. Though without the fact that it was published in a seinen magazine it can be an arguable matter.

Yeah. Published in Shōnen Champion Magazine and Akita Shonen. Count it in.

One Piece is not overrated, it's underrated. Just kidding
-
Devilman is also shonen…..
-
Holy shit. People was loose back then.
The best shounen has to be Phoenix then. Even though it depicted sex and incest. -
Is Phoenix Nausicaa/Watchmen level? I've heard it is.
-
The last time I touched Phoenix was like at least 5 years ago. I haven't got the opportunity to reread it even though I damned want to. But in my memory it has to be at least Lone Wolf and Cub level. It has many amazing stories. The one that impressed me the most was about a sculptor who has lost his hands and eventually created many masterpiece with his mouth holding the carving tool. He raped a girl. Yeah. That story had incarnation and buddhist theme, had a girl who danced around naked on top of the huge Buddha statue. It was beautiful and incredibly artistic.
Buddha is a shonen masterpiece as well. Goddamn Osamu motherfucking Tezuka. -
Of what I have read of Phoenix (only a little over 3 volumes - so I am certainly no authority) Phoenix is very good, but inconsistent.
-
How is "Phoenix" inconsistent?
-
Well, as I mentioned, I have'nt read all that much of it still. Only volumes 3-7-8 and some of 10. Three was the first that I read, it contains two short stories, the tone and quality of the two is quite distant (I enjoyed both but the second was vastly better story telling - perhaps reading volume 3 first has affected my opinion of the series too much.) 7 and 8 was a combined story - again of varying quality. 10 is great so far. Tezuka's epic is great, I am sure of that (and I still have a lot of reading to do) but with something so large inconsistency is an inevitability (the same is somewhat true with One Piece.)
