I don't say this often about many artists. But man, the cover page shows how incredible Oda is at his craft now. Just beautiful shit.
Chapter 488 "Song of Life" Discussion
-
-
Geez it's amazing how Oda can make a singing scene that's just ink on paper be so awesome.
-
What are the odds that Yoki is still alive? A cure in (what blues surround the first half of the grand line), a regular human lifespawn in one piece is kind of long, lets asume that they left laboon when he was 35, 85 minimun?
Bins's sake better be Brook's catchscreen music, or whatever the comertial catch are called.
Very emotional chapter, but is somewhat confusing, Brook was remembering himself in his boat alone, then back to his time in the rumba pirates, and then the final battle recording.
We can still trust crocus at least, some of the crew did scape throught the florian triangle.
Considering that this is one piece we have 3 possible leads to other interesting people:
- If Yoki survived this long.
- The merchant with tone dials.
- The poison weapon crew.
-
I doubt we will see the crew that destroyed the Rumba Pirates. They would all be very old by now.
Edit: By the way… beautiful chapter. Very very emotional. I love One Piece flashbacks.
-
Was that Brooks first bounty? I'm kinda disappointed that he wasn't more famous before he became the acting captain.
-
It's amazing how fast Franky House are releasing the scans, and in HQ too!
The chapter was pretty heart-warming, I just wish I knew the song so I knew the pace when reading it. I kinda wish the speech bubble didn't cover Brook's name on the poster so we could put an end to the Brook/Brooke deal.
Oda loves leaving us at cliff-hangers. I dunno rather to take Brook's final words as "I'm on my way, Laboon!" or "I'm going with them, Laboon. Wait for me!" tho safe to say it's the latter.
-
"Yellow Submarine" fans should find the following moment familiar:
Brooke: What's wrong? …...... //
Now it's just a quartet... //
...trio... //
...duet... //
...solo... -
What be this "Submarine which be color Yellow" you speak of?
-
Man, that was a really touching chapter. I absolutely loved the Rumba Pirates dying how they lived, while smiling and singing a song. Can't wait how the song will sound in the anime.
-
Damn, just read Franky House's scanlation. That was emotional shit.
And those lyrics really were pretty good.Fuck damn Oda, you're good.
-
Cool!
downloading chapter now, thanks BF!
Ninja edit: Rar file? I'll wait then, no big.
-
no this is the 4th page.
-
jesus christ, just an overall amazing chapter.
i mean just
goddamn, just flawless
-
@FFA: I don't know see how you can tell what brooke's original bounty was. However, I'm fairly sure that the first two digits on his Wanted poster are 90. But that could be 90,000 or 90,000,000 for all we know.
I believe that the first number is a 2..
I mostly think of him having a bounty around 30.000.000 -
jesus christ, just an overall amazing chapter.

Wrong-there's one flaw, and that is that there's no chapter next week
I don't know how Oda does it. I knew what was coming, I knew the whole crew died before the flashback, but somehow it still managed to pull at the heartstrings. Damn page 14-15 were just epic and then the "Trio…duet...solo" part just about killed me.
-
Wrong-there's one flaw, and that is that there's no chapter next week
YOU HAD TO BREAK MY HEART TWICE, DIDNT YOU .
-
The first number in Brook's bounty seems like a combination of the numbers two and nine. I have a feeling that was done on purpose to leave the amount up in the air. If I had to guess, it looks closest to a 2.
-
Seriously, after seeing the demise of the Rumba, i wish I could die like that. Sing to my favorite song and just a smile on my face with my friends. -_- And I agree with Shanks1Piece…saw it coming just still couldn't help but just tear jerk a little.
-
My only problem with this chapter is that we didn't get to see Brook's official name spelling and bounty. Other than that, amazing chapter.
-
What be this "Submarine which be color Yellow" you speak of?
Wow… I seriously hope you're joking.
Speaking of that, you think Brooke is also inspired in part by John Lennon?
-
"Yellow Submarine" fans should find the following moment familiar:
Brooke: What's wrong? …...... //
Now it's just a quartet... //
...trio... //
...duet... //
...solo...Ah, damnit, I wanted to be the one to mention that. As poignant and sad as the scene was, that other scene from Yellow Submarine was the first one to come to mind at it. Think it was intentional, in a cruel way?
-

Nah, I think it was just homage (or plagiarism, whichever you prefer… ).
I don't know if I like it in this context though -- in the original, it was funny because the quartet was being bonked on the brain by apples, not being skewered by arrows. We can laugh at the YS version because we know the quartet will be saved by the Beatles and revived by the end of the film. In this version though, it's a lot harder to laugh, knowing that Brook's crew-mates won't be coming back.So yeah, not quite sure if it's right for that scene, but it was fun to see it confirmed that he's a YS fan yet again (I first suspected he was when the Mugiwara encountered Sea Kings in the Calm Belt).
-
Amazing…
one thing though, is it me or does Brooke resemble Jango? (from the kuro neko pirates)???
-
Brooks bounty will be 33 mil.
-
Nah, i'd put him up there between Franky and Sanji's bounty
-
Chapter 488…. I haven't cried like this in years!
-
The "quartet….trio....duet...solo" part was excellent. I wouldn't say it's my favorite flashback, though...Probably my second-to-least favorite, topping only Robins.
(still satisfactory, though)
-
Beautiful chapter, I loved the ending, what can I say about Oda that hasn't been said?
Also to me, it looks like a 9 is the first number on Brooks bounty.
90 something million anyone?
-
Yea, 90,000,000 seems about right to me, too
-
Paulie is running from debt collectors…and his fans? :D After his daring rescue mission with the SHs he must be the hero of Water Seven!
I've wondered how Brook stayed sane and now I have my answer. He didn't. He was obviously going mad. Talking to himself, hallucinating, making 90 point angle out of himself...His antics on the deck were the saddest part of this chapter for me.
And...when...is he going to join, again?
-
most likly next chapter in two weeks.
-
i'm pretty sure the first number on Brook's bounty is a 2.
Besides, the crew's reaction ("you got yourself a bounty!") shows that was his first one. What the hell could he do to start with 90 million? -
Are you guys blind or something? It's clearly a 2 on Brooks bounty. The top bit is just a loop to make it look stylish combined with the outline of the speech bubble.
-
IMO one could technically get a fairly decent first bounty if you take over as a captain of a fearsome well known crew.
Or by beating someone else that has a 90 + bounty… that was what Tech was trying to do after all.
(although I agree that it looks more like a 2 then anything else.. but I'm hopeing its counted in some foregin currency rather then beri )

And we can't forget that Bellamy was the best rookie with that 35.000.000 bounty….so Brook couln't have a higher one...
-

Actually it was around 50.000.000.
-

So, you're telling me you hated Brooke and Robin's touching loss over Zoro's crappy "My best friend was clumsy and fell down the stairs and killed herself, boo hoo, now I must take her sword so that she can hear my name in heaven" crap?
-
He already did…
From his last words, its pretty obvious that he's going to join the mugiwaras.
-
FFA:Zoro at least had some emotional ties to the one he lost.
Robin didn't even recall her mother. Olivia was a crappy mom.
(just ranting because I dont think the way they die matter it is THAT they die and what ties they had before theyu parted. Losing a mom is sad, but losing a crappy mom is less sad then losing a good one (usopp)…)
chpollastrini: wasnt "Rockstar" a rookie with 90 000 000?
-
Gorlom has a point.
-
Zoro at least had some emotional ties to the one he lost.
Robin didn't even recall her mother. Olivia was a crappy mom.
She wasn't a crappy mom, she was a wanted criminal that was trying to protect her daughter (who is potentially the daughter of someone else important, considering she has a DF). Besides, it wasn't her mother's sacrifice, it was the scholars, Clover, and Saul's sacrifice (all for the sake of a little girl, whose parentage I can't believe some people are denying).
But enough of that, that's off-topic.
Brooke's old bounty is probably irrelevant, since if Kuma saw him they'll get new bounties.
Also, all things considered, do you think Yorki and Zoro might have a connection? I doubt knocking him out was just for fun, there had to be a plot device for it.
-
@AD-HD:
Actually it was 50.000.000.
We both are wrong, it was 55.000.000, just checked it…
chpollastrini: wasnt "Rockstar" a rookie with 90 000 000?
Don't think so, Rockstar was rookie only in Shanks' crew…he already had a name for himself....
-
Okay, so how can Brook open his skull like that ? Does that mean his afro is cut too? Weird skelleton with even weirder storage space.
For some reason, the more I see Luffy on the piano the more I imagine him wearing a red glittery dress and singing a song.
-
Rockstar was a Rookie in shanks crew, not a rookie pirate.
-
You know what would have been better? If Olivia didn't become a criminal at all. You know stop pursuing all this lost history crap and raise her daughter instead of leaving her with her uncle and goddamn horrible sister-in-law…
Now that would have been "being a good mother". Of course it would have been goddamn awful story telling.
I'm not trying to make Zoros past sound sadder then Robins. I cant tell which one is worse. but this "the damn clumsy runt fell down the stairs, is this supposed to make me sad" attitude is making me feel somewhat uncomfortable.
chpollanstri&Nuzzie: AH. but right there lies my point. everything is relative.
Bellamy is a rookie in a shichibukai crew at 55 million. Rockstar in a yonkous at 90 million (and completely unknown by anyone near WB)
Brooke is the new captain of an already known crew, formerly famous in his home country because of his swordsmanship. Surviving in the Grandline 50 years ago, the world was most likely different back then. (Terry pratchet has a funny quote. "An accomplishment gets easier the more times it is done. A mountain climber may struggle to reach the peak of a high mountain, xxx years later old ladies will stroll up the mountain drink some tea, back down and then up again because they forgot their umbrellas.). Who is to say that does not warrant a high bounty?
The title that sarquiss gave Bellamy was bragging and does not necessarily need to be a record surpassing things set in another time and age.
(please note I'm not argueing that he has a high bounty just that it is not so strange to phantom that he could have had one.)
-
Also, all things considered, do you think Yorki and Zoro might have a connection? I doubt knocking him out was just for fun, there had to be a plot device for it.
Whoa, where did that come from? I can see a possible connection between Yorki and Shanks (I even believe that there is one), but Yorki and Zoro too?
You better give us some reasons. -
I still think Kuina's dad pushed her down the stairs.
-

This is a romance work. People are gonna leave to pursue their dreams. They don't have time to be responsible and live normal lives.
I'm not trying to make Zoros past sound sadder then Robins. I cant tell which one is worse. but this "the damn clumsy runt fell down the stairs, is this supposed to make me sad" attitude is making me feel somewhat uncomftable.
I didn't mean for it to come off so harshly. All I meant was that tremendous sacrifice went into Robin's salvation, with tons of people dying in mass genocide. Zoro's friend dying, in itself, was tragic, but it would have made much more of an impact if she died for some kind of sacrifice that potentially changed Zoro's life.
On that scale, Zoro and Usopp's pasts didn't redeem themselves. Shanks gave up his arm to protect Luffy, Zeff gave up his foot to keep Sanji alive, Bellemere gave her life to ensure the lives of Nami and Nojiko, Hiruluk gave his life to prevent from shattering Chopper's hope, Robin has already been discussed, Franky's mentor Tom never stopped helping Water 7 and building ships, which cost him his life, and now, Brooke carries the hopes and dreams of his former Captain and crew, long after all of them have died.
Those things change a person. Having your friend fall down the stairs is tragic, but it doesn't change anything. Zoro didn't learn a life lesson from having his friend die. Usopp lied to give himself hope, which is sad, but the real life lesson by him was learned by the fight with Luffy, not by his mother's death from illness.
-
I doubt there's a York-Zoro connection. That's stretching it. I mean, at least Shanks and York both look alike and have similar epiphets (CalicoYork and Red-Haired Shanks).
But this song is just going to be great in the anime where we can actually hear it. It'll probably be on the soundtrack.
-

U may be right, but while I was reading and watching this part, it seemed like Bellamy was talking about having the biggest first bounty ever….But like u said, he very well could be the biggest rookie in his crew
