honestly, i think Hiruma is going to get the NFL deal
Sena still has some school left and Hiruma has been something of the shadow protagonist of the series.

He should get the position just because of his evil grin.
They've been the best thing about the E21 art since the beginning.
Personally I hope Sena doesn't get the NFL contract. The whole series has been about playing as a team, whether it be Deimon or Team Japan. For Sena to abandon his friends just to go for glory…somehow they're probably going to make a moral about that when Japan wins the game, but if Sena does accept it, it just won't feel right.

Knowing Hiruma, he probably made a bet with the Commissioner of the NFL in Las Vegas way back when and the whole team will wind up joining the NFL as part of a World Expansion League or some damn thing.
Right now I'm betting that Panther will get the NFL contract, and so that when he does he can say to Sena, "I'll be waiting for you in the world of the pros!"
Forgot to add this to the thread, but next week (not this week, the one after) will be the series finale of ES21. I'd be dissapointed to see it go…but with how the World Tournament ended up, it's more just putting it out of it's misery for staying a bit too long.
Wait, how will that work? I get the Golden Dragonfly to Sena 2-Point conversion, but that will just tie America right?
Well that's depressing. I held out hope that the series would continue and go back to it's strengths by focusing on the Devil Bats. I couldn't care less about half the people in this match. The fact that characters like Juumonji and Komubi were tossed aside for boring nobodies like Hercules and Achilles really gets me.
I guess next chapter they will just about win and then the conclusion will be the final chapter with a big ol' dramatic conclusion to who the MVP is and then a big focus on Team Japan. This really annoys me. I didn't spend 250+ chapters giving a crap about Gaou or Banba. I want the final chapter to focus on the characters who got me to this point. Well, let's see how this ends…
Good point. What the hell was the point of sending Juumonji along if he didn't get to do anything!?

So there's only two chapters left!? Damn. We'd better have one hell of a 50-page epilogue chapter. With Juumonji inheriting the position of captain.
im kinda glad it's ending
at least it'll be more interesting than what's going on now
alas my poor Rui didnt really get to do much of anything
I'm not too surprised it's ending. I had a feeling that this was going to be the last game. (Of course, I thought the Christmas bowl was going to be the last game too.) So we'll have the end of the game this week, and next week, I'm betting it will be one of those "What happened to everyone" type of endings.

Juumonji nothing: anyone who essentially had no connection or rivalry with the Pentagram got diddly in this arc. Any potential opponents and rivalries that could have happened through the arc got wiped away when the series took a nose-dive and we skipped to this ending. The sad thing: as much as I hated them continuing ES21 after the Christmas Bowl, people seemed to turn me around towards this tourney…I regret that now.
I feel like they were really rushed by SJ. If they were allowed to take this at a more normal pace, I think the World Tournament would have been a lot better. The potential was there. Now it's just kinda meh.

That's what I was inferring to when I said that: the nose-dive was the rank in the magazine, which collapsed after the Teikoku game ended. Maybe if they had more support we would have seen a better arc, but unfortunately it didn't and we got…well, what we did.
I just hope the editors at SJ don't forget what a powerhouse ES21 has been for them over the past, what, DECADE?
I wonder if they can team up again and create another awesome series, sports or not. Hey, it worked with the guys who did Death Note, Bakugan is awesome.

Memory can be short at Jump. Unless you're Akira Toriyama, they're all "what have you done for me lately" instead of "what did you do in the past". It's all the here and now for the most part.
It seems 333 is going to be the last chapter (with colour and extra pages)
Just 2 chapters left…that's definitely leaning towards the sports manga "defeat ending"
Well, the second-to-last chapter is out and…well, it's hard to say without a script but one thing I can say: they tied, no OT, the game is over. So I guess that means next chapter will just tie up loose ends. (though one really cool thing about the final play: Kid actually did something)
Wait, no over time? I thought there was ALWAYS over time in football.
at chapter title
It was only I went to bed that I remembered the (higher) possibility of a draw. I wake up and, lo and behold, the chapters' out and it came true
So there's no overtime cause the americans were so certain they were gonna win? What the hell kind of reason is that.
This chapter was one gigantic tease, i wanna see the where are they now right now dammit.
From the end, it did look like an overtime was played…though I really didn't like where the chapter was headed. It was like they just wanted to keep relevance...though from seeing Mamori back at the locker room looking at pics from the game, next week is bound to clear up what happened.
FUCKING TEASE. They should have just gone with overtime normally. "No overtime because they were sure they'd win." What bull, that never happens in real football. Overtime is overtime.
If next week is the last chapter then it'd better be one hell of a 50-pager.
Wonder how well that would play at an actualy game, Yeah sorry there Dallas but we couldnt have guessed that the redskins would be a match for you. How hard could it be to adapt and just play the fricking overtime.
But like Sat said, that better be an epic chapter that covers every single characters where abouts after the game.
Too rushed. It really seems like there was no point in the game where any of the main characters defeated/surpassed their respective opponent, besides Gaou vs. Don and Clifford vs. Hiruma somewhat. Panther vs. Sena, that actor-looking guy vs. Monta and whoever was supposed to be opposing Tatanka. There was really no resolution for those matches. This really did not feel like a final match at all. Very disappointed. Ah well, can't wait for the last chapter ever though. It'll be interesting to see who won and who attained the MVP position.

I hate to be the doomsayer, but I think cause and effect may be a mess here.
There's a good chance that people tuned out after Teikoku because they felt ripped off by "ooh, another story arc!" with minimal foreshadowing. The World Tournament concept could have spat out a kitten every twenty minutes, and people would still look at it skeptically.
FWIW, the English volume 26 is out now; the translation seems reasonably coherent.
If Hiruma doesnt get the MVP title i'll be pissed. Nobody deserves it more.
Besides Shin, Agon, Kid, Sena, Gaoh and the rest of the tops would have no problem joining through try-outs.
The last chapter had better be good.
What can we say, the last really good game was against Hakushuu. Though to be fair that was only two games ago. It's not like this shark jump was a long long time ago.
I hate that there hasn't been more Monta. This disappoints me greatly. It was way too rushed, they should've been able to atleast give it a strong finish. The finisher was not impressive at all and I don't think anyone really had a win besides Gaoh's single success and Hiruma getting the best of Clifford.

There was Sena headbutting Panther…and the "sympathetic" bit to try and bring in both Rui and Takami into the game (though they didn't do it to anyone else to sort of demonstrate more of Japan's potential, even with first-team players). But for the most part, the problem with the game is the same problem as the whole arc: the collapsing popularity forced them to rush it, taking time away from potential characterization and vastly rushing other characterizations and potential of what could have been leading to...well, the mess that was. I sort of wished Inagaki and Murata got an exit interview along with their final chapter next week to explain what could have been but...oh well, the final chapter at least better be good.
I agree that Monta got shafted this last game. Was anything resolved between him and his battle with Bud?
Looks like the last chapter will be a "where are they now". Probably Sena in the NFL or at least playing college football with Monta.

Well since this is it, I read the spoilers for the final chapter:
! Essentially it's two years later and everyone is in college aiming for another tournament. Final alignments:
-Sena went to America to play for Notre Dame (the HS), then ended up at the same university as Kurita, Riku, Monta, Mizumachi & Usui
-Hiruma went to the same university as Yamato, Akaba, Agon, Taka & Ikkyu in Kyoto
-Musashi & Gaou are on a semi-pro team
-All Ojou players are at Ojou U, Rui is at his feeder university
Sena's hoping to defeat Hirumas all-star team? Man dream on.
As much as it probably would suck i want it to continue at college level…..

That's it? That better not be it. I want closure within the high school, dammit!
raw is out…...manly tears ran down my eyes :'<<<<<<<<
While the series was rushed to it's ending, im still glad that it didn't end to abrupt. (though I really wish it stayed at the pace Inagaki wanted)
There's some parts I noticed in the last chapter.
! * The last cover makes a nod to the first cover in the first chapter.
! >!
As such, i salute Inagaki Riichiro-Sensei and Murata Yusuke-Sensei for all their hard work during the series 7 years run (might i mind you all that ever since October/November 2005 [Bando match], Eyeshield 21 was going nonstop (besides after the double-issues like all other).
Volume 36 will be released in August while the last volume will be released in October. And here I had a theory that they were planning to rewrite the whole arc in the volumes :'<<<
Oh well, Im glad for reading this series for more than 4 years and I'll be eager to read their future series with or without eachother. And thank all translators and scanlators for making me read it.
Now to end this all with a bang:
YA-HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Discovered the series myself and started reading it in '05 when it started in the US and started following the raws with the end of the Shinryuuji game. Probably the first sports series I've ever seriously followed…and this really is the end. A lot of great moments aside from the nitpicks (no Shun, Marco, Komusubi or Taki) and...why the heck is there a Koigahama U!?!?!? Congrats to Inagaki and Murata and...
YA-HA!!!!!!
I've always liked this series. It's a shame to see it go. but it's better to end it now while it's on a good note. :]
This was the first sports manga I ever read, and probably the only one that I will. Normally, I don't read sports manga, but the unique character designs, the humour, and the fact that it didn't try to alienate viewers by throwing a lot of rules at them at once drew me in. Although it was definitely rushed towards the end, it will probably be one of the best series that I have read.
I found this to be a great ending to the series, except as all else have said for lack of characters.
Though it was awesome to see those players that thought Sena was a substitute get owned!
Congrats to Inagaki and Murata for a wonderful series!
YA-HA!!!
I wanted a better last chapter, but oh well.
It's hard to believe this is really the end. ES21 has been a staple of SJ for 7 years, I can't imagine a Jump without it. But oh well, we can hope Inagaki and Murata come up with something new and awesome.
Nitpicks for this chapter:
1. Did we ever learn who won the damn game? Can we assume America did since Panther was holding a trophy? Or was that the MVP award?
2. Speaking of Panther, I really wanted a scene of him actually winning the award. Damn rushed endings.
3. Sena became captain?! Bullshit, that should have been Juumonji, hands down. Sena's an incredible player, but a captain has to be more than that. Ridiculous.
4. Speaking of Juumonji, ONE FREAKING PANEL!? That's all each Ha-Ha brother gets!? (and did Juumonji join Saikyoudai or what?)
5. It seemed very thrown together overall. But again, that's from being rushed. Annoying.
Things I did like about this chapter:
1. Mamori followed Hiruma to Saikyoudai to be team manager. Well, if we can't have an actual romantic scene, this works!
2. The reason for the original three splitting into different teams. I totally understand it.
Oh well. It's over. I can hope for some extra chapters in the last volume, but until then:
YA-HAAAAAAA!!!!!!
The ending was great too bad they didn't beat America
i wonder if there will be a sequel
As said at least it went out on a high note and it will be up there with the other great sport animes
A decent enough ending. I didn't like it at first, but as the day went on it grew on me. And it is a good set-up for a sequel. If that tennis manga can get one, this can too. I would love to see Sena vs. Hiruma. And Unsui vs. Agon.
that was a epic ending. i am going to miss reading es21. it was my second favorite manga. but hey at least the lest it open for more.
Ya-Ha!!!
I can't wait until the next chapter comes out.
Awful ending (well really, the last 20 chapters or so were awful) to an amazing series. Ah well, I suppose it couldn't have been ALL good.
Farewell, Eyeshield, seems like only a while ago that I first started reading you.
man, eyeshield 21 was great from beginning to end. anyone who thinks otherwise is just on their period. wtf you want everyone to join the nfl?
^ I don't think they wanted anyone to join the NFL so much as they wanted the World Cup arc to unfold a bit more smoothly.
Could easily see this having a sequel.
Would be a better choice than PoT (or another Captain Tsubasa).
