yeah Navy was in the movie so it's assumed it'll be in the uncut
Dammit. Meant to quote RomanGod. Thanks for clearing that up, though.
I was about to pound my head into my desk. After hearing that Luffy shouts he wants to kick Crocodile's ass, I was about to choke some more fansub followers like bitches.

Yeah, that's pretty much what it all boils down to. Most people are thrown off by the fact that they see "MARINE" on everything and assume "Oh, they're part of the Marines. THE DUB CHANGED IT!" It doesn't help when fansubbers and scanlators fail to actually make a note that "Kaigun" is being used and not "Kaiheitai."

guys sorry for going OT just for a moment… remember a while back the argument over whether or not Chopper's Japanese VA lowered or changed her voice in heavy point? Well I have undeniable proof that'll put an end to the argument but I don't want to post it here, is there a topic about it somewhere? I did a search and didn't find much but I don't wanna start a new topic XD
On topic:
yes I was confused by the "marine", but if the exact translation is "Navy" then I don't have a problem with it. -

Okay well I'll just upload it here. This is undeniable proof. If you don't believe it after this, you just won't believe anything with ANY evidence. First off I'm not saying there's a HUGE difference. I'm saying she makes her voice sound a bit more gruff in heavy point. That's all it is, it's just a bit more rough.
Okay let's take into account the video Charagon posted.
if you start at 3:37 and play until about 3:50 you'll hear Chopper yell "Arm Point" in both heavy point and brain point. This automatically disproves those who say Chopper's voice changes just because he's mad. It's the same exact scene, twenty seconds apart. You can see he's angry both times he says it. You can hear the difference in his voice, but even if you can't:
http://www.saveonepiece.com/armpoint.wav
I made this for the disbelievers. I don't know if anyone downloaded it yet, but it has both lines then "Arm point" right after another. Listen to it, you can hear it.Still can't?
Well here's the proof.I recently obtained a program called "Cool Edit" it can edit wavs and MP3s and do nifty things like that. One thing it can do is edit how long a wav lasts WITHOUT changing the pitch. That is what I did for this sound. Hearing Chopper speak slowly really brings it out. The first time he says his line, it sounds like like two Choppers are speaking with an acho. The second time there's a slight echo still, but it sounds like just normal Chopper speaking slowly.
http://www.saveonepiece.com/armpoint2.mp3Still don't hear it?
Then you just aren't hearing what you want to here:
http://www.saveonepiece.com/armpoint3.mp3okay after that last one if you STILL don't hear it, then there's no convincing you and you will not believe anything no matter what kind of evidence is thrown at you

My only problem in the Marine/Navy thing is where text that says "Marine" is pointlessly altered to say "Navy". 4kids started that shit and it's getting continued into Unlimited Adventure. With the game, I'm sure it's easy as changing some code and whatnot, but for the anime, changing every instance of "Marine" to say "Navy" (see: G8 arc) is a costly edit that serves no other purpose than to just waste time and money.
Leave the words alone, plz. That's all I ask. Call them the Navy, Marines, Ramalamadingdong Squad for all I give a fuck. Just don't go spending money and time on changing text to say that.

FUNi doesn't alter the hats or anything in the actual dub. They just call them the Navy.
Anyways, Tsukento, I think someone said that they called them "Marines" in the uncut Alabasta movie that they showed at that convention.
-
does it really matter what they really are. they both deal with water and stuff. they both military forces
-
I feel stupid now,
I finally understood why 4shame used I.Q.instert trial test.
Its seeing how they could manage to survive the trials. Something to that affect anyways. -
Funimation has three options:
1. Call them Navy and do not edit anything that says MARINE
2. Call them Navy and edit anything that says MARINE because of the confusion
3. Call them Marines and not edit anythingOption 1 is the the most faithful translation to the original, but it will confuse English speakers since Navy != Marines. I imagine that the language barrier prevents other languages from being confused by the contradiction that is on the uniform.
Option 2 is very accurate and will remove the confusion, but the edits will enrage a lot of fansub fans.
Option 3 is an inaccurate translation, but will satisfy the fansub crowd.
I like option 2 the most because what is being said is more relevant to the story and removes the contradiction on the uniform. With that said, I don't care which options they decide on since I won't be the one that will be confused.

There's really nothing wrong with changing the text to say Navy. 4Kids' problem lies within the fact of how TERRIBLE the edit looked. The Navy emblem looked like they peeled a sticker off of a soup can label. o_O
-
Navy, Marine. I don't care which. Which one they are doesn't affect the story in any way.

Well…they already went with option one. ^_^; For the tv dub, anyways.
-
I think Marines was said in movie 8. has bad memory
-
Looks like I'm gonna have to choke some bitches. :getlost:
Mato, if you happen to read this, would it be possible to make a note to them that the word that's said and written translates to "Navy" and not "Marines?"
-
Well… Funi pleases the fans... Even when the fans are sometimes wrong. ^_^;

Tsukento is not a tro' fan D=
We fans only change things that we deem necessary. For that is the essence of a fan-base~

Shut up, Lobster.
When we fans tell them to change the very thing that was in the Japanese version to begin with… That's when complaining is going too far.
-
So you tolerate the pointless changes of translating companies… but not the fans? (which are generally alot less)
Double standard cookies? Anyone? -
@Lobster:

There's a difference.
Changes by companies ends up leaving them responsible for the screw up.
Changes demanded by fans that are grossly incorrect, thus forcing the dubbing company to do it just to please the fans ends up leaving two parties responsible. The dumbass fans and the company for actually giving in to these idiots who have no idea what they're talking about.
This is just like the fans who bitched about Naruto saying "Believe it" despite Naruto constantly saying "dattebayo" in Japanese.
-
@Lobster:

Double standard cookies? Anyone? What Tsukento said. These fans who think they know so much… Don't know shit. Yet they complain to the companies regardless, when they don't even know what the hell they're complaining about.
It kinda makes me mad that they give in to them like that, even when they're wrong, but whatever.
The point is the company would've had it right... Until the fans stepped in and BAWWWed otherwise (not talking about you or anything... but that's the case with Navy/Marines).
-

Because everything in the Funi One Piece dub that people have been complaining about is the equivalent of Loopy Fist.

Censors be damned, Loopy Fist is hilarious sounding.
-
I prefer Loopy Fist, actually.
-

Meh I still say Potion Punch is more hilarious but that's just me, but oh well I don't really bitch about the Naruto dub since I know it's pretty damn close to the original.
That's why I don't complain about Funi Piece too. XD
-
I don't really bitch about the Naruto dub since I know it's pretty damn close to the original.
Agreed.
Anyway, I think they can keep Holy's name, in Episode 151 they kept the text "Holy land, Mariejois".
-
Isn't it amusing we find something to bitch about this much each week?
-

Well, we wen't earlier.
Then it got boring, so the b*tching returned.

I say the blame rests on your shoulders.
-
It's stupid. We all hate the bitching, yet if we don't bitch the thread gets closed for being too off topic.
-
Sorry I'm late to the Navy and Marine argument, but I remember it was said at some point that Marine means Navy in French, German, and Dutch. Try typing Marine into an online translator and set it from one of these languages to English and it will be Navy.

I like Option 1 because from everything I've heard on the word kaigun, it makes sense. I say to hell with the confusion factor. Oda knowingly writes "Marine" on the sails, hats, the back of shirts, etc. His concept of Marines and the Navy falls back on the way the Navy and the Marines used to interact, but more importantly THIS IS JUST HOW HE SEES IT.
In other words,
Oda's concept of Navy/Marines != the United States Navy & Marines

It's also wierd for me because the translation of Navy is Marina in Spanish which means that what is written on the uniform doesn't contradict what is being said.

Life would be so much easier if Clyde could phone call Oda. ^_^

Think Clyde would be too busy asking Oda all sorts of question out of sheer fangasm.

I've finally crawled back to the One Piece Anime section and what do I see? Lobster bashing and grobbling about Navy/Marines. Friends of the One Piece, let me ask you this: is not a rose by another name still a rose?
Yes, so shut the fuck up and play nice.
On a lighter note; I'm amazed at how many pages these dub episodes score each week; just imagine if this stayed as one topic…
-
Friends of the One Piece, let me ask you this: is not a rose by another name still a rose?
By that logic, the sky is now the ground and the ground is the sky. They're still the same as always, just different names.
Poetic I am not.
-
Yes, so shut the fuck up and play nice.
I haven't seen you around in a while.. have you always been this awesome?
-
Was I the only one who thought Pagaya sounded like the King of Town from Homestar Runner? It took me awhile to think of who he reminded me of, but it hit me today.
-
I don't think he sounded like the kind of town at all.
-
I think Pagaya sounds more like Mr. Magoo.
-
Yeah, that's another one I thought of. He's like the bastard son of the KOT and Mr. Magoo.
-
By that logic, the sky is now the ground and the ground is the sky. They're still the same as always, just different names.
Poetic I am not.
I guess the Simpsons said it best.
Lisa: What's in a name? A rose by any other name would smell/sound as sweet.
Bart: Not if you called it stench blossom. -
Couldn't have said it better myself.
-
Except that Smoker is not smoker anymore because they got rid of his cigar…..
-
@Senshi:
Yeah, that's another one I thought of. He's like the bastard son of the KOT and Mr. Magoo.
Has anyone informed Marzipan of these proceedings?
-
After all Usopp's generally comic relief anyways.
OH NO YOU DIDN'T!!!
-
@Ao:
OH NO YOU DIDN'T!!!
Well he is. Yeah he's got his serious moments but overall he's basically the funny guy of the group.
-
Luffy is also comic relief.
