Chapter 459 "Cannot Call, So Sorry for Dying" Discussion
-
-
Nothing to say but Pure Awesomeness!! Oda is the master, being able to produce facial expressions on a skeleton without actually moving his face. And, yay, Laboon! But, the best part was seeing Sanji all fired-up.
-
holy shit Laboon sxdasfdsafdf.
-
I'm disappointed to see Brooke lose, I guess Zoro will fight Ryuma and maybe Brooke will fight Jigoroh (who I really think is weaker then Zoro, by far). That will help these "nakama" bond.
However, I'm really concerned about Brooke now. While his character is interesting, fighting wise he seems weak. That is, his swordsmanship is hardly different from Zoro–there's nothing that really defines Brooke like all the melee fighters in the Strawhat crew except for his ability to take damage like a skeleton.
I have to wonder what intentions Oda has in store for Brooke, cause this style of fighting seems similar to many other temporary characters like Paulie and Wiper--who own some characters quickly and get owned quickly with little detailed to their fights. I'm sick of getting into the Brooke joining or not joining debate--but I'm just saying I'm getting mixed signals from him.
-
It sucks that there's no new chapter this week. But in the upcoming ones, I can see Sanji crashing Absolom and Nami's wedding, and re-enacting that scene from "The Graduate".
-
There is no way that jigorou's body is stronger than that of a mummified dragon slayer "king of swordsmen." Zoro's abilities require strenuous physical training and muscle control. My thinking is that a old coot like jigorou will barely be able to use the simple techniques and just hurt himself if he tries the more complicated ones.
Oh, there's a trans available in the trans/scans sub forum here: http://apforums.net/showthread.php?t=13438
One, he was nearly 60 when he killed 7000 pirates… Two, It was never clarified if it is the same Ryuuma. And if he really is the king of the swordsmen, well take out Mihawk, cuz theres someone just as powerful as him who happens to be fighting the musician, instead of the first mate (first mate is most trusted on crew and also is usually the most second powerful).
-
seriously half this thread should've gone to fight match ups thread -
Well I won't object to Brooke joining unless the SH get another female in the crew I won't object! So ODA please add a female, that way I could feel the the crew is half a quarter semi balanced!
Then it'll be 10 people in the Straw-Hats.
-
XD Sanji has gone Super Saiyen,Hooray for more Brook i hope in 460 Oda will show more Brook human
-
Can someone tell or us again about why there won't be a chapter next week.
-
@Kuso:
Can someone tell or us again about why there won't be a chapter next week.
He has to do some research… Hopefully its for future chapters! If not, its okay, everyone needs a break.
-
Arse-kicking time! Yay! He never fails to draw the "Let's crush them!" scene.
-
I want to see Sanji kick down the church windows, and all the colored glass shatters down on Absalom. Then a fight inside the church, smashing up the pews and stuff.
-
However, I'm really concerned about Brooke now. While his character is interesting, fighting wise he seems weak. That is, his swordsmanship is hardly different from Zoro–there's nothing that really defines Brooke like all the melee fighters in the Strawhat crew except for his ability to take damage like a skeleton.
I don't see how his swordsmanshp is similar to Zoro's at all. Though I'm not that knowledgable on swords or swordsmanship, though Zoro has his Sanotryuu (and varying other styles), while for the most part it seems Ryuuma and Brooke are fencing. The sword itself also being of a differnent style.
I'm wondering whether or not Zoro would in fact face Ryuuma. The main reason for the defeat this time around doesn't seem to be so much that he's weak, as opposed to the fact that Ryuuma knows what Brooke his thinking and his weakness, which is protecting his afro. He might be more effective agianst Jigoro, who is probably likely weaker overall in the first place. Though I think he might eventually pull through in this fight, given how eager he was to get his shadow back.
-
Ahh, that was a frighteningly touching chapter.
So Brook doesn't want his Afro destroyed because that's the only thing Laboon might remember him by?I'm still not sure about Brook joining though- he might go and return to Laboon instead of going along with the strawhats. Luffy seems really determined to keep him, however- and he's musician. Ah, well.
-
The best one piece chapter in a long time.
-
50 years ago… wonder if Oda will somehow tie Brook's story with the two giant that was tricked by the world government to guard the gate 50 yrs ago also.. that would be awesome!
-
So, not to nitpick an otherwise cool chapter (strawhats getting pumped for their fight and their new nakama!), but shouldn't Robin have known about Laboon also? I mean, she may not have known his name, but how many big whales are there at the twin capes on the grand line? She was in Baroque Works and being so high in the command chain she should have been aware of Mr. 9 and Miss Wednesday's mission.
But yeah anyway.I liked the comedy in this chapter. The fights will hopefully start after oda continues his "reasearch".
Sanji is the only one concerned about Nami…the rest of them believe in her terrifying nature. I'm leaning more towards a nami/absolom fight than ever - and maybe sanji will fight perona?
-
Just because Brooke got injured by Ryuma means he lost? Zoro got injured badly by Mr. 1, but did Zoro lose? Please don't jump to conclusions from stuffs like that. Brooke WILL win and join the SH.
BTW, do I still need to do a translation?
-

I don't think we've truely seen what Brook can do. So far his fight has been protecting his fro, not really fighting. Im sure his true skills will be proven in due time.
-
lol looks like we are gonna have a wedding crashing scene soon. lol i can already see sanji interrupting the wedding and kicking absalom's ass and then carrying nami away in his arms as they go into the sunset. but more likely sanji will interrupt the wedding and pick a fight with absalom and then lola will get into the church as well and pick a fight with nami for lying about being a man.
-
After two disappointing weeks this kind of chapter reminds me why I love One Piece.
Franky and Brook = pure concentrated win.
-
What a fucking awesome chapter.
-
We finally know Brooke's past. I wonder how will be his flashback (probably like Usopp's or Zoro's for a change: a short tale at the end of the arc that reminds us of his moments with Laboon and his crew)
Did anyone noticed that Luffy is so dumb he can't tell the difference between Gigoroh and Zoro? That made me laugh!
And we end with the Strawhats together and ready to kick ass! I can't wait to see them cause mayhem on Thriller Bark!
-

True, but jigorou still has the body of a 59 year old coot. When he was alive he may have had skills to rival mihawks and overcome his aged physique. Now though, jigorou only has the skill of a 20 year old iron jawed power lifter. How is his 59 year old body going to withstand the techniques that strain zoro's "monster" body to its limits?
Ryuma was only confirmed to have been from a similar country, have the same name and killed a dragon like the "king" in the one shot. This is enough of a reference for my needs.
Also, there is no direct relation between being "first mate" and being the second most powerful in a crew. Buggy's first mates were beaten up by his lion. Foxy's two side kicks were considerably weaker than others in his crew. Kuro's Jango could have been beaten easily by the two cat brothers. Etc.
@jeeto: Robin probably just didn't have enough information to put two and two together. Even if she knew there was a mad whale attacking reverse mountain she wouldn't have known its name or back story like the others do.
-
**You act as if a 59 year old can't have a strong body.
Also, nowhere was it ever stated that Ryuuma was Mihawk level.**
-

But Luffy did know Jigorou isn't Zoro. Anyway, I'll post a translation shortly.
-
I think it's fitting that we return to Laboon now. We're about to enter the latter half of the Grand Line. What better way to finish off the first than by resolving as much as can be done the first thread to come from the first half.
-
This is the first OP chapter discussion I've posted in for nearly half a year. I've still been brooding over the massive fail of EL and didn't feel compelled to read the manga anymore.
But…I just got the memo on /a/.
HOLY CAPTAIN OF CRACKERS!!
-
not every1 enters the GL though Reverse Mountain so it would be easy for Robin not to know about the whale. Besides its a whale who would of thunk that it would play so much importance.
@malintrex_Terek Why did the collapse of EL make you stop reading the manga?
-
@MonkeyDMalcolm:
@malintrex_Terek Why did the collapse of EL make you stop reading the manga?
Because it sucked. I hated everything from Nami v. Califa on with the exception of Garp's appearence.

Title: How Can I Say We're Sorry That We're Dead?
Cover: The Space Pirates Defeated!P1
Luffy: How dare you take my shadow?!
Franky: Calm down! Moria isn't here!
?: Where is this place?
?: Sunny.
?: What are we doing back on Sunny?P2
Zoro: This isn't a dream! My shadow is gone and it feels strange!
Luffy: Oh no! There's no more food!
Sanji: All the foods are gone, except emergency foods.
Luffy: I don't want cheese and bread! I want meat!
Zoro: I was too careless!
Luffy: Pirate lunchbox is gone too… I don't want cheese...
Sanji: Where's Nami?P3
Sanji: Captured?! Why didn't you chase her captor? Which idiot took her away?! I'm gonna get her back!
Usopp: I'm sorry! But I couldn't go after the captor! Calm down! So right now, we need to get back two things.
Luffy: Nami, food. Our shadow is gone, right? So make it three.
Usopp: I'll explain everything starting from Nami and shadows.
Sanji: Ma...P4
Sanji: Marriage?!?!?!! THAT FOOL IS TRYING TO MES WITH ME!!!!!
Luffy: He wants to marry Nami? That guy's something! And I'm made into a giant? So that's how zombies are made!
Zoro: So you made sure that it's Luffy and the cook's zombie already, Usopp?
Usopp: That guy's a Shichibukai...
Chopper: I'm scared...
Franky: You didn't know?
Luffy: So the zombie will act like the person. I met Zoro's zombie too.
ZoroL How is it?
Luffy: He's like you, and wearing wooden sandals. But I know he isn't you.
Zoro: So if we put salt into their mouths, we can get back our shadows.P5
Zoro: How ure are something to find out the zombie's weakness.
Franky: It's all thanks to the skeleton that we came to rescue you and also the zombie's weakness.
Luffy: You found Brooke?
Franky: Yes, and I asked such a question... When you wanted him to join our crew, I was feeling neutral. But when I get to have a talk with him, he's such a great guy, he is such a man!
Flashback
Franky: Wait a minute, I want to ask you something.P6
Franky: If people see you like this, you know how they'll react. A talking skeleton... Nobody would want to make friends with you.
Robin: What are you asking him, Franky?
Franky: Even if you leave here, your fate is still a cruel one. Plus, you said you wanted to die for staying here for so long. If I were you, I'll kill myself. You're in a bad situation and you still act like a gentleman. What is the promise you made to your friend?P7
Brooke: Yohoho! A long time ago, we left a crewmate in a certain place and then departed. We promised him that we would be back, and left into the sea and got defeated here and so couldn't keep the promise. I'm the only survivor and I must let him know about us. It's been 50 years since we met.P8
Franky: 50 years?! I wasn't even born yet! I don't think he's waiting for that long!
Brooke: But do I have the right to break the promise? What if he is still waiting? He must be sad. What if he is thinking that we abandoned him? If I keep on letting him wait, he'll get even sadder!
Franky: You...
Brooke: The friend is named Laboon.P9
Brooke: We didn't want that young whale to go with us on a dangerous voyage.
Laboon: Po!
Brooke: He must've grown very big now.
Franky: A whale?!
Brooke: Yes, I believe he's still waiting for us to come back and we can play music with him again. I don't believe that he thinks we're dead. How can we make a promise with him and then go to heaven and say, 'We're sorry, we're dead'"?P10
Brooke: A man must keep his promise and I must someday return to meet him!
End of flashback
Franky: And that's why...
Luffy: Laboon
Sanji: It's him...
Usopp: Really!
Chopper: Who is he?P11-12
Luffy: We know that whale!
?: That no mountain! It's a whale!
Luffy: PO!!!!!!!!!!!
Franky: What are you talking about?
Sanji: At the entrance of the Grand Link there's a gigantic whale ramming his head against the Red Line. He's been waiting 50 years for his friends to return.P13
Sanji: They say his friends already left, but he wouldn't believe it. Though Luffy stopped him from committing suicide. but he's still waiting for his friends to come back.
Usopp: Unbelievable! He's been waiting patiently for 50 years!
Zoro: To think that one of his crewmates is that skeleton...P14
Ryuma: You said you got stronger in these 5 years, and so is the same with me! Because we are the same being!
Brooke: Ugh!
Ryuma: You still haven't change! Always protecting your afro! You can't always protect that weakness of yours!P15
Brooke: Shut up! Laboon, do you still remember us? Whenever I think of you, I feel pain in my chest, even though I don't have one now, yohoho... We weren't able to conquer the Grand Line. Everyone is dead, and I don't have a face and body anymore.P16
Brooke: Even if we meet, you probably won't recognize me. Don' touch my afro! Though everything is gone, I might as well leave behind the same smile and hairstyle. I will see you again at the promised place!P17
Franky: Waaa!! I LOVE THAT SKELETON AND WHALE!!!!
ZSU: SHUT UP!!!!
Luffy: Haha! He's a musician, a skeleton with an afro, yohohoho! And also Laboon's friend! We'll drag him with us even if he doesn't want to! Any objections?
Robin: Even if we object, you won't change your mind.
Usopp: I want him to meet with Laboon again!
Franky: I want him to join!
Chopper: Me too, idiot! I'm not scare of skeleton!P18
Sanji: Forget about that now! We must stop Nami's marriage!
Luffy: Where'd you going, Zoro?
Zoro: To get back our shadows.
Luffy: All right! Time for payback! Let's bust up Thriller Bark!
Usopp: You can do it!
Sanji: You're coming with us! -
After reading the scanlation, my opinion of this has slightly changed. I'm all for Brook joining, and hell, Luffy seems to have pretty much confirmed it. Also, I'm going to love to see this scene of Brooke vs. Ryuma animated–it will be a sad dramatic scene similar to Kumadori beating down Chopper.
However, his fighting style still concerns me. Right now, it seems like he is simply a weaker Zoro, as the stance of Brooke seems slightly different. Although, did Sanji's style seem too different from Luffy at first? My hope is:
1. I'm wrong and it'll seem more unique as time goes on.
2. Brooke's dvil fruit will hive him unique abilities--maybe it has powers that even Brooke isn't aware of? While he's had the fruit for 50 years, he's only fought for a short amount of time. For example, right now Brooke seems almost immortal. He takes damage like a Bleach character, but with good reason for once--no organs.
-
Also, it seems Brooke wanted to conquer the GL first before returning to Laboon, and he hasn't done so yet. This gives him a reason to join the SH because he will be able to conquer the GL that way! Don't you agree?

What powers does Brooke have aside from his swordplay? It's pretty lame to have two swordsman on the crew.
And I haven't read anything, I'm just a special guest for this chapter only. Please don't delve into long spoilers.
-
He has a completely different style of swordsmanship than Zoro. Besides, it's not like two swordsmen in the crew would be any different than four brawlers like Luffy, Sanji, Chopper and Franky or two longrange "strategists" (add a couple more quotation marks for good measure) like Nami and Usopp.
The only one with a unique fighting style, as a grappler, is Robin.
-
Swordsmen are pretty common in the OP world, even more so than brawlers. The only type of fighters more common are gunmen.
-
We pretty much know very little about Brook's abilities other than he uses a sword.
-
This is the first OP chapter discussion I've posted in for nearly half a year. I've still been brooding over the massive fail of EL and didn't feel compelled to read the manga anymore.
But…I just got the memo on /a/.
HOLY CAPTAIN OF CRACKERS!!
Finally buddy, your reading the manga again. Good now chill and forget the EL event ok.

@joekido:
Finally buddy, your reading the manga again. Good now chill and forget the EL event ok.
I've yet to read the manga again. I'll let Thriller Bark have its run before I dive back in - getting back into the day-by-day drudgery of nitpicking every little event in OP simply drains too much energy from me and I've got more productive venues that my time best be channeled in.
As said earlier, I (by happenstance) stumbled upon a spoiler topic in /a/ and it was so impressive I was compelled to make a visit here. I do not expect it to be a routine sort of thing.
-
Great chapter!
My favorite parts were when it was revealed about Laboon and Brook, the last page of the chapter, and when Eneru destroyed those space pirates.
Anyway, can't wait for the next chapter. -
you guys have weird reasoning for things and try to justify it is crazy.
-
This chapter reminds me why I prefer Brook and Franky over Sanji and Sanji.
Good day to you all.
-
Obviously, at least after reading the latest chapter. Like Franky said, I didn't really want him to join, but it's undoubtedly gonna happen.
-
Brook is one of those crew members where he doesn't need to fight to prove how incredible he is.
Wish people would take that attitude with Usopp, more often.
-
Awww nawww you din't.
-
@Cyringohn:
Brook is one of those crew members where he doesn't need to fight to prove how incredible he is.
Wish people would take that attitude with Usopp, more often.
Therein lies the logical fallacy.
It'll probably not happen since it's just one of those things alot of Usopp fans probably feels needs to be done to redeem his character. It's like me wishing Sanji would be replaced by Dogpen, sure he wouldn't be any less annoying, but atleast the gag reel would feel a little more funny coming out of a 2 foot dog penguin.
-
In before "this belongs in the other Brooke thread".
I wanted Brooke to join day 1, this latest chapter only fuels the fire.
I CAN'T STOP MY MANTEARS FROM FLOWING.
-
Should be in Brook or chapter discussion methinks.
-
you guys think sanji would kick lola? i know it's technically a girl but she does have the face of a boar which is food in sanji's eyes and she is a zombie which means she is no longer human.
