Yeah but how many mermaids have we seen? I just wanna see a mermaid that can kick some ass. She doesn't even have to join (although that'd be cool). I just think the diversity in the crew is pretty amazing and that seems to be what Oda's going for. I also would like at least one more female in the crew. One like the top fighters (Luffy/Zoro/Sanji/Franky) who has very good physical strength and maybe somewhat of an attitude. SO basically, a badass tomboy mermaid is what I hope we'll get sooner or later

Mermaid wouldn't work so well seeing as, unless they're 40 years old or older, their tails are one part, no legs. It would be pretty hard to get around that way…

I would say that Brooke will join after he gets his shadow back. Otherwise I think that he wouldn't but there is one thing that made it sure that he is gonna join: He told Luffy that he was musician.
Which member has Luffy always wanted to join his nakama since the beginning? Musician, and Oda made the point clear that Luffy is intrested in him many other ways too and as we have seen, what Luffy wants, Luffy gets. -
To me Brook has a great chance of joining because
A) Yuffy wants him on the crew bad because to yuffy him as a person is awesome and he fills the role he belives is most important. On top of that the only reason he did not join was because he has no shadow and would die if he did. (which is prolly yuffy's reason to go on Thriller bark)
B) He said he had to fight some one. It is shown that if a important arc character fights he has a good chance of joining.(Sanji, Franky, and Chopper for examples)
C) Since we found out that HogBack and Brooks are connected it would be hard to exsplain the story of Brook and his relation to HogBack without a flash back would be neer impossible. And when some one has a flash back that means a new crew member (Except for the sky arc.)
As for "selling Brook" we will see more of him since he's obviously a major arc character. I think he'll grow on more people as the story goes on.

You aren't seeing the entire picture. There is more to Brooke than we know, and personally, while there are some odd members in the crew, it is hard to see a skeleton traveling with them. I have a strong feeling Brooke will decide to stay, and I have another feeling it has something to do with Cindry.
And the fact that Luffy has wanted a musician since the beginning is another thing, that is a "running gag", and I don't think Oda will solve it this early. One Piece is probably only half over.

You bring up a good point…well except the Cindry part...theres only two alternate scenarios i could think of which would be:
1. Brooke and Cindry both join (unlikely but i think that Brooke was the one who traumatized Brooke in the first place)
2. Brooke and Cindry stay to live together on Thriller Bark after Doctor Hogback is defeated...
or,
3. Brooke and Cindry have no connection Nami fights Cindry, defeats her and Brooke joins after they take care of business on Thriller Bark. (this is the one I'm hoping for since for some unexplained reason i like Brooke and want him to join.) >_>
And as far as mermaids go they would have to be over 30 to walk on land and i doubt Oda would let someone that old on board after having Franky, Robin and (hopefully) Brooke. Assuming Brooke joins the next nakama is going to be a young person. It is a shonen manga after all.

Having a mermaid under the age of 30 would be basically pointless to the crew. I mean, she would have to be put in the aquarium whilst the crew are on board, unable to move and join in the crews social activities (eg meals, etc). When the crew docks, for her to be able to leave she would have to be put in a portable pool/aquarium and be wheeled around, and considering that most of the story occurs on land (kinda funny for a pirate story), it would have to be quite often. And when it comes to fights, unless it's an underwater battle, she would be a liability.
Now for her position in the crew. Besides decoration or a pet, I seriously can't think of any use for her (diver maybe). Now what actually annoys me slightly is people saying that the reason Oda put an aquarium onboard was because he was going to put a mermaid into the crew. Thats quite absurd seeing as the reason for the fishtank has been explained. It makes just as much sense to say the reason Oda created the Going Merry (when they still used it) with an open crow's nest was becaus he was going to put a flying character (probably a bird zoan, Pell???) into the crew, were the character would "nest" there, also it would make an excellent take-off and landing spot for them, when ever they go off scouting or something like that.
Now, if it were a mermaid over 30, then thats a different matter…..

You know, the more people wish the next crewmember to be a female merman, the less I hope s/he will be. I mean, it would be cool to have more non-human characters besides Chopper, but I'd rather want Oda to come up with something more original than a merman. Since everyone is predicting/hoping for a female merman, having one join the crew would seem unoriginal and predictable. So far most of the new crewmembers have been VERY unpredictable, and I would like for that trend to continue.
I'm on your side in this matter. As for the non-human character, since we already have chopper, having another one is no longer unique. Right now, I still like the skeleton musician idea. At least I don't remember anyone predicting this one.
After Robin joined as historian nothing is really off limits. Also remember that some members are just ship hands. So if a new member joined and had no job then it wouldnt be a crime.
But, look at what happen to Robin's character. Her role doesn't get much screentime. As a result, she's pretty much a background character.

How would a gyojin look out of place in the mugiwara. None of the crew members are what you call normal; the have a rubberman, a green-haired swordsman, an orange haired barometer, a cowardly liar with a nine inch nose, a dartboard eyebrowed love-cook, a were-deer, a demon woman who can created duplicate body parts, a high-of-coke cyborg and are likely to have a perverted skeleton who can eat and take a dump. A gyojin (and probably a ningyo also) would fit in perfectly with the crew, after all the SH are just a collection of weirdos.
And Takaho, its gyojin (fishman), not merman.

Umm, question: Was it ever stated/shown that mermaids can't breath outside water? Because Kokoro could. If so, I don't really see why a mermaid woud have to spend all her time inside the aquarium. She could easily slither on the ground, or get some nifty wheelchair thingy from Franky. I'm thinking a jetpack, are you thinking a jetpack?

^^ The reason a mermaid under 30 would need to spend their time in an aquarium is because they won't be able to move on land (properly or comfortably), nothing to do with breathing. And why sit in a wheel chair when you could have a wheeley-aquarium? Jetpacks are just that bit too advanced for OP, don't you think? And btw, Sodom and Gomorrah had to be put on wheels, and they moved slowly on land.

Thats what I'm talking about, a fishman ot merman would look way too normal. Its way to predictable, everyone was going about how they want a fish guy in the crew since we know they are going to that island. I was happy when Brook was introduced, it stopped the "I want a mermaid whore or (insert super awesome fish) gyojin on the ship…......" comments for a while.
