I really agree with most of mgear's thoughts. It just makes sense, people seem to just want to disprove it because the idea of his mom is too cliche or not battle crazy, but the clues are all there. One Piece is not a shallow story, it is very deep, and very touching, Oda has put a lot of work into it, and a lot is drawn from mythology, the bible and other real life pirates. There is no reason to think Luffy's Mom wouldn't be amazing, all his family is, and its been a while since we met another member of his family.
Luffy was sent to the Amazon Island for a reason, and not to kill another Shichibukai or solely to gain a new power (this isn't Bleach or Naruto), Kuma mention to Rayleigh what he had planned and Rayleigh, who came there to save the Straw Hats from Kizaru, did not object. That means it was a good reason he was sent to the island.
Now who expects everyone in the whole world to know about Luffy, there are plenty who dont even though his name is in the papers, and there a lot more famous people who Luffy and his crew dont know about, so its likely even Boa does not know his face. His name was also not mentioned to Boa yet, his name could mean something and would be an event when it is mentioned.
Also the theories he's only there to learn haki make it sound like were reading dragonball, naruto or some other long running shonen manga. IMHO training for new powers is one of the most boring parts of any manga/anime, and I have yet to see Oda waste any time on such useless content. If ever they've trained its always been as part of the story or only mentioned briefly, its always a surprise when a new talent or power is revealed.
As for why he is not affected by the power, it has to be something real deep, not being a man, even the Marine vice-admiral who knows full well what her powers are and Boa's comrades could not easily defend against her mero-mero power. A blood relation would be a good reason why her powers do not affect Luffy (as such would be a bit sick if it affected relatives). As for being his Mom, it just seems like the logical explanation, with her sisters being the fat ugly aunts. While another theory is that she might be an aunt, is kinda a boring surprise, though a sister would be interesting but then that means the others are sisters and that doesnt fit the profile. The mother theory works best. This also goes in stride where he's familiar with something on her back but doesnt remember, it could be a childhood memory.
Another thing is that drawing from the colorbook of Boa Hancock, she would have to have large significance if she was in there, or it was a random drawing, still.

Anyway if someone states a theory, please make it deep, nothing shallow, after 500 chapters we should know by now One Piece has no simple revelations or story arcs, nor neverending fillers :)
I am baffled by all the theories why luffy is immune to mero mero. Didnt 518 already explain why Luffy is not affected?
Hancock: Why do you not turn to stone…...?!! // Even after seeing me in the bath... is your heart not moved in the slightest?!
Marigold: Do not be ridiculous, sister!! // None, old or young, male or female, could fail to be captured by your beauty!!
Sandersonia: His fear of death must simply be outweighing his wicked desires. // Pathetic, but lucky for him…!!!
Luffy: ...I'm not sure what's going on, but I think I'd better get out of here!!
Hancock: !
Luffy: I just want to find someone important, that's all!!
At the moment, nothing is in this simpleton mind except reunion with his nakamas. as long as u can keep the desires out of your mind, u can counter mero mero, and we had seen it twice already.

I agree with you that one piece has a deep story. Are you agreeing with me on the fact that boa will get her ass kicked by luffy if he has finished with the 2 gorgon sisters? If yes then i can't see luffy kicking the ass of his mother. That will be a little weird i think. I mean luffy is on this island for one purpose. If kuma is working with dragon then he has revolutionary thoughts in mind. And one of his idea or dragons idea is to crush the dictature of hancock on amazon lily. IMHO things will never be the same when Luffy will leave that island. Boa will be surely stripped from her title. The thing she got on her back is weird. Well let's wait but one effect of this arc is that luffy may learn a new technique. But the main purpose is to revenge Margaret crush Boad and her sisters, wake up the island and rejoin his nakama.
the new two week is going to be slow…...... Luffy is going to whack the Gorgon sisters silly after the break............ or not..... you know Oda.......
Maybe, maybe not.
Sanji: "Oww?! What are you talking about?! That was a punch!! Punches can't hurt rubber…"
Garp: "But there is no defense for a fist full of love!!"Either way he fought against Roger many times, is a legend and hero of the marines, and can hurl a ball and chain the size of Thousand Sunny…I mean, come on.
[hide]**Chapter 431:People:** "Garp? You mean… THE Garp?!
The one who chased down the Pirate King,
time after time, in the era of Gold Roger?!
The legendary marine?!!"[/hide]
so you speculate that a fist of love is accidentally/inadvertently using haki?
He didn't say inadvertently.
Speculations about Garp using haki have been around for some time. Claiming the guy doesn't know what he's doing is new I think. Imo not a very promising approach though.

It might not be, the fact that Garp can hit Luffy and he has superhuman strength could be completely unrelated. But the thing is , people are more incline to believe that he used Haki, which is being understood more every chapter. Rather than say he could hit Luffy just because he loves him, if that was the case, then everyone should be able to beat Hancock…right?

XD
There's a difference between grandfatherly love and romantic admiration of beauty.
Nami's punches hurt Luffy too. So she can also use haki?
…please.
It's on the author's page. It was literally what Tokoro said. Which just makes the whole thing amazing.
I can't find it.
oda is sorry to his fans, he was late in turning in his chapter so there will be no one piece next week. He missed the deadline, pretty much.
Nami's punches hurt Luffy too. So she can also use haki?
…please.
You haven't read the thread …. It has been stated that it's highly probable that garp punches use a technique as theirdamages have been questioned by Sanji. By nami noone question how her punches can harm Luffy or Zoro. Zoro, i mean he is strong and is oftens at the brink of death so the punch of a navigator shouldn't harm him. Conclusion: nami punches == comedy purpose
Garp punches + wondering of Sanji == maybe a technique that garp uses so maybe haki. You see?
Nami's punches hurt Luffy too. So she can also use haki?
…please.
Oda explained this in an SBS saying it was because she punches from the heart. Yeah…
Vigor and Drive. Haki is not fucking KI. If you really want it you can really have it.
Nami uses Haki unknowingly when she brings the pain to Luffy.
Ok not really.
Actually, yeah really.
Oda explained this in an SBS saying it was because she punches from the heart. Yeah…
So does Garp, case closed…
If Oda was late in turning in the chapter, I guess this means he doesn't have that 3 week buffer anymore?
And while I was joking about Nami, it'd be comedic if it was true.

Er guys, i was referring to Nami!?

It seems to make sense.
Also, anyone else querying why CP9 didn't undergo haki training?

Three weeks ahead INCLUDES going to the printer, there is no "buffer". Even the fastest printers, even one specifically set up to print Jump, is going to take 2 weeks to print a book, particularly of the page count Jump is. Add in editorial/book assembly at the front end, and delivery to stores, and thats an additional week, maybe even 2. (jump is a weekly staple with many copies sold, so I assume they've got their delivery practices down solid to just a 3 week cycle.)
Oda may have an actual buffer, but I always assumed when that SBS question was asked, the question meant "When the current chapter is out, what are you working on?" at which point he would be 'three weeks ahead." Three chapters ahead of the reader is not a buffer. Three chapters ahead of the PRINTER is a buffer. This is also how some animes, when they're riding RIGHT behind the manga, are able to produce episodes so quickly. For instance, The Naruto/Sasuke fight aired within just a week or two of the manga chapter coming out, but in fact they had an actual extra 3 or 4 weeks before the printer process to work on the episode. (followed immediatley by filler for a year, but thas besides the point and for a different forum.)
In which case, if when he said "3 weeks ahead" he was just counting the printing, being off by even a day could make him miss a printer deadline. If he had an actual 3 week buffer, 1 day here or there wouldn't matter much, he could make it up during the week. Particularly in this case where it seems that it was a late script approval that held things up, as opposed to an actual art thing.
There is haki training? lol
For lack of a better word. All of the Amazon's know how to use it and i'm assuming it's not something you just wake up one day and have an epithany about. Also if Haki is as huge as it seems to be in the new world, why didn't Moria fight with it? Also would it be fair to assume that Lucci's <ultimate attack,="" forgot="" the="" name="">was haki based?</ultimate>

Amazon Lily is quite isolated. Only few people have shown to do it. In Rayleigh case it's not confirmed he used haki to touch Kizaru. So haki may or may not be big thing in NW.

I think the line is "he didn't use Haki, just brute force" is very telling as to where Oda wants to take the story. It would also go some ways to explaining why as a swordsman, Shanks is considered enough of a threat to the world government that they'd need to mobilise all Shichibuiki and higher up Marines against him and yet as a mere swordsman, he's considered lesser than Mihawk?
For Moria not knowing haki, maybe it's a mental thing. He got pwned by Kaidou so badly that he just couldn't muster up enough vigor and drive for the rest of his life. Would make sense for Croc too. They're so jaded with the life of piracy and their dreams they have chosen alternative ways to gain power.
As for CP9 who knows maybe they really believed in rokushiki and felt that was enough to be elite. not to mention the missions the WG send them on don't imply they have been going to the NW to fight the yonkou.
I'd like to add that just because haki appears to be the next power up for Luffy and new characters in the NW it doesn't mean that a person who doesn't use haki can't be a person who does use haki.
I don't think Garp used haki at all. If he knows it that well he would've taught Luffy and Ace the basics. Neither of them have forgot their training so you can't say Luffy forgot he knew haki.
As for the Mero Mero and having to look at Hancock, that would mean if I was looking at her and then ran away and she shot it at me I wouldn't turn to stone right? or are you guys saying she only needs eye contact one time?
Also how come when the 3 of them were saying sorry and had their heads down that when Hancock told Margret to lift up her head and turned her in to stone did the other 2 lift their heads as well? I'm not sure of this eye contact thing, I know they're shown with their heads up when turned to stone but if I'm begging for forgivness and someone else is being addressed I wouldn't look up, it displays noseyness as if I'm minding other's business and would get me scolded even further.
Ah welll probably doesn't even matter anyway.

You're talking about WB do you? Are you talking about the war between the WG and WB? Also i think that there are 2 distinct clans in the OP world. The one that only rely on their DF and think that Haki is crap and the one that use the Haki technique to boost their strength. Maybe that the third clan will use both? Luffy with rubber techniques + haki to kick every dictators ass :)
Some very interesting theories going around. But honestly, this was the best thing about the chapter:
I laughed. A lot.
I thought Luffy telling a spoiled Hancock you piss me the hell off was the best part of the chapter. Especially since at the time she was saying he would forgive her also because she's beautiful.
I actually really like the idea of a fist of love being haki. That said, i know that sometimes when i'm chilling with a girl, i might say something in a bitchy-cute-funny way and she'll punch my ribs in a bitchy-cute-funny way and even though there's no way that it should hurt and if it was a normal punch to the ribs it wouldn't hurt, but for some reason, hours later, it's like i'm still feeling the pain.
what was the message at the end of the chapter by Oda?
@MonkeyDMalcolm:
what was the message at the end of the chapter by Oda?
No chap next week because he was late to send in chap 518.
I don't understand how ppl were saying his message was great or really interesting, etc. giving a lot of praises for it unless they were being sarcastic and just wanted to start up ppl asking what the message was.
Maybe that oda had to depict Luffy learning something and luffys idiotie at doing it jumped on Oda leaving him unable to finish the story before the deadline?
haki is linked to will power
u don't have to be strong to have haki
just the will and the crew have shown since they've joined they all have the will to do anything
Zoro was going to 30 days in his beaten state eating dirty cookes
nami was willing to suffer to save her island
Sanji was going to give his dream up for his debt to red chef zef
Ussop well he's ussop
Chopper well doctor
robin lived through solitude
Franky guilt
brookes wanting to fufil his promise to laboon
face it if they were trained all of them would have been haki users long ago
So are none of the quality groups going to do a scanlation of this chapter?
Binktopia's will be out soon and Franky House's is out already.
I was actually surprised in a positive way with the quality of the scanlation with how quick they were made. Sometimes we'll be waiting for a day and a half after the raw is posted and it'll still won't be decent quality.
This:@mgear:
You have to look at the picture taking ALL THE FACTORS TOGETHER.
Plus this:@Fiasco.:
Equals the best piece of irony I have heard all week. Yes, even more so than the sketch from SNL.
Now I know it's a stretch but it could be the "trauma" that is needed to join Luffy's crew. And now that I think about it be really interesting to see her paired with Usopp. The one who alway tells a lie and the one who always tells the truth. I'm seeing a lot of fun situations with those two if what I said turns out to be correct.
Great theory. I really like the pairing too: Usopp (liar) and Margaret (honest), and Margaret (female perv; unknowingly) and Sanji (male perv; intentional). Can anyone find any sort of pun in her name regarding honesty?? I doubt it, but thought I would ask.

@--------:
Er guys, i was referring to Nami!?
I couldnt tell you were referring to Nami because you mention fist of love which is specifically from Garp – but if you meant Nami, then maybe. Who knows at this point. My reason behind believing that Garp used it (Haki) is because he is old-school*, is considered a legend / hero, he physically hurt Luffy and Oda made a point of mentioning it and its incredulity, and fought Roger** on seemingly equal terms. As for why he named it "Fist of Love" instead of saying he used Haki, I simply would say that [1] he is lazy, and [2] he seems to have a habit of leaving out important information (likely because he is lazy). I cannot think of exact examples of this, but I don't think anyone will argue that point because I am sure it is in the manga.
I know that sometimes when I'm chilling with a girl, i might say something […] and she'll punch my ribs […] and if it was a normal punch to the ribs it wouldn't hurt, but for some reason, hours later, it's like I'm still feeling the pain.
So….you are saying that you know some girls who can use Haki?
I think a full chapter (13 pages give or take) dedicated to the fight would be good.
I am betting on the
a) fight not ending before the end of the next chapter
b) luffy losing the fight
Now let us wait and see shall we…

Yes some ppl wish he wouldnt be so honest, cause they dont know what hurts more…him being late to send the chapter, or being "relaxed" at telling us he screwed it up...
(It was all so pumped up about this "big news" he has for us, as if there was some oscar awards and when the moment comes it would go smth like: And the Oscar goes to, you know what, frack it we misplaced the Oscar so we ll be anouncing it next week see ya ;) )
My thoughts: You forgot, was late whatever to send it, release two chapters next time then…
Blue
I'm thinking Luffy's going to lose the fight against the sister's too. Either that or it'll be interrupted. I mean, just the fact that the sisters stepped up to the plate after seeing him OHKO Bacura without haki… Chances are they assume he does have haki, in which case their haki would make them stronger than that for them to not go running away in fear. Then again it could just be amazoness "must die in battle" or something, but I'm betting they're smart enough to know when to retreat. Thus, Luffy's in for a major beating (unless he does somehow learn haki midfight or the fight is interrupted).
Luffy will win, sisters will be turned to stone and Luffy will get even more pissed. Then go ape shit!
Wait…so is there evidence to suspect that haki can be used defensively? Cause then won't it render most of Ussop's attacks useless, unless he puts haki in them which I pretty much doubt at this point...
Luffy has never fought two competent opponents at once in his own. By the looks of it the Younger Boa are pretty much renowned by their combination, so no way they are going down like Mr.5 and Ms.Valentine.
i feel like everyone is gonna laugh when i say this, but imagine Luffy was immune to Boa's attacks simply because he had his eyes closed. The final speech when she said she was beautiful was just all talk, no devil fruits necessary. She even told Margaret to lift her head cause if she wasnt looking, the powers wouldnt work.
of course, what do i know? haha.
I think we all kinda got that. I mean yeah…Luffy didn't look at her neither did the marine...the marine just went the extra mile and stabbed himself.
which of course is meaning that she doesnt even realize her own weakness cause she is so full of herself to believe that people cant help but look at her. which of course, only makes me like her character more.
