@Brooke:
well, subbers translated Oz, so it's Oz for me
Subbers = Never wrong in their infinite wisdom.
"Odz" is a bastardized compromise that attempts to appease both the moronic "Oz" faction and the anal-retentive "Odr" faction, but I guess it just ends up satisfying no one.
I think it's actually a positive thing at least HERE so people will atually know how the name is pronounced. I mean, the 'Odz' pronounciation WHEN SAID CORRECTLY is so close to the original it's practically the same thing.
On the other hand there is the point that it loses the original direct translation which brings up a moral dilemna (well, as about a big a moral dilemna you can get in manga) do you write it so people know how to say it, or how it should be written?
I believe it was Monkey Spirit (correct me if I'm wrong) who revealed the pronounciation of Odr as 'Oh-th-r' where the 'r' is soft as in the end of 'mother'. When you bring this foreign (to English speakers) word to Japanese, it's extremely easy to see how it became 'o-zu'.
In short, around here, at the very least so people aren't running around like dumbasses calling him by something that CLEARLY IS NOT HIS GODDAMN NAME, I'm prone to use Odz. Whereas in my site or anywhere I'd consider a conversation discussing canon, I'd use Odr, regardless of what Viz or Funimation may do down the line.
If Oda chooses something different though I'd change in a moment.
