yup it was my first game too, i got it on virtual console
General Sonic the Hedgehog Thread (Now With Movie 3 & Knuckles)

Umm, actually I think the Sonic games have some of the best music available on the video game market today. I love the music from SA2 (Live and Learn, Escape from the City) SA (Open Your Heart) and SH (Opening Theme, Team Rose Theme, Team Chaotix Theme). I think Sonic has always had the greatest music ever since Genesis.
But as far as what could be done to save the series. What I think Sega needs to do is just buckle and fix all these glitches and poor controls that show up in all the new Sonic games. They've got some beautiful cut scenes, art design, and gameplay, (and music) but they need to figure out all the technical stuff.
Wut?
Woah woah woah. Let's look at the console Sonic games after Sonic Adventure 2.
Beautiful Cut Scenes - I assume you're referring to SONIC THE HEDGEHOG. Scenery looks amazing, yes. But in terms of overall scenes showing off plot, acting, and what not, I'd give it all a C.
Art Design - Metal Sonic's upgraded design in Sonic Heroes was okay.
But then we get into Sonic Riders, where the three new characters look basically exactly like fan-made characters.
We move on to SONIC THE HEDGEHOG and holy hell. Eggman looks HORRIBLE when trying to be presented as a serious villain. No thank you. Silver? Invert Shadow's colors and HOLY CRAP! NEW CHARACTER! The Princess? I can't tell if she's wearing stockings or if her in-game model's just got orange legs. Memphis looks like something you'd find from the god awful Archie comic book series.
Sonic and the Secret Rings is okay since the characters are supposed to be based off of Arabian tales. …But then you have that powered up form of Sonic at the end. I can't tell if Sonic's trying to go for an alternative Super form or if he's trying to be a race car, because the design looked a lot like a damn race car. o_O
Then you have the upcoming Sonic Unleashed. WereSonic. Need I say more?
Gameplay - Wowowow. What a horrible mess these games have been. Heroes had your typical run to the end of the stage, collect all the items, and perform such simplistic tasks that a toddler could beat the levels. If you didn't collect all of the items, the levels looped an annoyingly amount of times.
Riders is basically something that should not be done as a primary function for controls in Sonic games. Not to mention when you have attacks such as Knuckles raspberrying or Eggman farting, which are completely out of character.
SONIC THE HEDGEHOG was a TOTAL mess where everything is absolutely broken. Combine Sonic Adventure's gameplay style for Sonic, destroy how the Homing Attack, grinding and somersaulting work, add Shadow the Hedgehog's gameplay, and add Silver's psychic powers, and you have a clusterfuck of a game. Especially when you also add in the awful side missions.
Sonic and the Secret Rings had the right idea but had awful missions and broken controls combined with on-rails gameplay.
pretty much all the songs from Sonic 2 were tight…heres the remix of all of them from the credits

Meh. I'm in the minority who believes StH2 is completely overhyped and really didn't bring a whole lot to the table like StH or even StH3 did. The level designs for StH2 were rather bland and the game had a minimal amount of memerable music compared to the other Genesis titles.
Sega wants to save Sonic? Hire me. I know what made the Sonic games great to begin with. :getlost: It's bad when you have Yuji Naka, the creator of Sonic Team, saying that in order to truely enjoy Sonic, 2D is the way to go.

I could see Knuckles blowing raspberries given how much of a cheeky bastard he was in Sonic 3 but that last one I can't comment on.

Didn't know you had it like that if I had to give my take on one of the early Sonic games just like that it definitely would be 3D.

stop making the sonic series

^ Your avatar scares me.

This game better have lots of speed fast pace action, and it better be on that Triple.

Well, to be fair I never played Sonic the Hedgehog (since I don't have PS3 or X360) or Sonic Riders (since I'm not into the whole racing thing). But I still think that the cutscenes in SH and SA2 were great (not so much SA and that gay story book crap in Secret Rings).
And when I said art design I guess I should have said level design, because I think the levels have all been really great ever since…well, the original Sonic. Really, I don't see any problem with taking the same basic level and changing the scenery around. After all, it's been that way since the first Sonic.
As far as the gameplay, again it's always been that way. A simple run to the end of the level dash. I was able to go through the first 4 or 5 worlds of the 2-D Sonic games when I was like 6 or 7. And if you don't like the collection stuff you don't have to play them, simple as that (though I do admit that leaves less space for mad dash stuff).
Anyway, point being, I still stand by my opinion.

Man, I played the last level of both Adventures the other day. I'm going to say with a good amount of confidence that Ryan Drummond and crew really don't need to come back. I wouldn't mind the 4Kids crew gone, either, of course. Other than that, considering what they're running on, the cutscenes are pretty good in those 2.

Well, when I say I like the cutscenes I'm talking more about the art and graphics. As far as the voices, I highly prefer Drummond and the rest over the 4kids cast. I'll admit Drummond and crew had some mishaps but I thought they were decent overall.
Oh, and on another note, I'd like to say that I'm with the majority in believing that Shadow the Hedgehog was the most abysmal Sonic game ever made.
-
I'd make a game where you play eggman and try to kill sonic and ensalve the whole world.
Man a mario game where you play Bowser and are supposed to infiltrate the mushroom kingdom to kidnapp the princess would rock.

Sonic Adventure 2
-
seriously? is it good? how about making another one?
-
Sonic's gone too far up his own ass and is definitely the fastest thing alive because nobody will ever catch him.
I honestly think the only solution is a series reboot… Not that I'd want it.
-
yeah hes the fastest thing alive outside of the games….hes slow from Hero's onwards, and Riders wtf? Since when does the fastest thing have to ride on a board
What we need is something like this

Ah that was one of the serious pluses of SA2. For the first time you got to play as the villians, Eggman specifically, and attempt to rule the world, until you decided to press the last story button..

Yeah, I seriously can't understand why people think the Sega cast was any better. It was good for a laugh during Sonic Adventure, pointing out how hilariously bad the voices were with the lip synching. But after that, it just got annoying. Thankfully they added the option to use Japanese voices in both Adventure titles.
Sega's cast and 4Kids' cast were never anything special and weren't any good. I'd say scrap them for either actual talent or no voices at all. That or just stick with the damn Japanese voices. Sega has no problems with continuity in terms of voices.

Or rather, until you realized you were just playing as Tails but with a Dr. Eggman skin.

It was already stated that it'd be on all three consoles.
-
Adventure the voices were good (cept Knuckles) but the acting was just bad. It fixed itself in Shuffle, Sonic Adventure 2, and Sonic Heroes though.

Yea fast paced action and speed. the only thing closets to that is STH 2 (Classic) the chemical plant level (I forgot the name) where you move so fast sonic leaves the Screen behind. Whether it was a glich or just game play that was dame good fun doing it.

My ideal Sonic game is an all around improved Sonic Adventure 1, with the characters redesigned by Naoto Oshima. The game will have slightly cell-shaded graphics and an art direction inspired by both Sonic Adventure 1, and the Genesis games. The music will be composed by Richard Jacques, Hideki Naganuma, Naofumi Hataya, Masafumi Ogata, Michael Jackson, Susumu Hirasawa, and Masato Nakamura.
Playable characters are just Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Big the Cat (No Fishing). Plot is just "Robotnik has a new mechanical so-and-so, and is doing his thing, go stop him".
The Big 3 and Robotnik are like their OVA versions in terms of personality. Big is a bit smarter. Voices are the same as the OVA version aside from Big. He gets a new VA.
Gameplay is basically a improved SA1. It might be neat to change the physics system so jumps are more pressure-based. Its very satisfying to give the jump button a slight tap and use your half-height jumps to leap over rising spike traps. Its so cool, stylish, and requires precision. They could evolve around this more, and it could lead to some interesting jumps and shortcuts.I came up with after I went through Marble Zones narrow caverns today.
-
Wait you mean the JP VA right? Because Sonic, Knuckles, and the others had weirdo accents. Tails was hilarious, I wouldn't mind hearing it again. And what? No Amy?!

Well, for starters, I wouldn't release Sonic 1 on the GBA in the state it is.
I happened to buy it on a whim, and I can describe the game as such:Knock knock
Childhood memories: Yes? Can I help you?
Sonic 1 GBA: Kicks childhood memories in the nuts -

STRRRRAAAAAANGE, isn't it?!

Fast forward to 7:45. This one's from the Japanese version. -
At least he's not British.

STRRRRAAAAAANGE, isn't it?!
You notice in that movie, Sonic doesnt use slang once. "You might know everything i am going to do, but thats not going to help you because i know everything your are going to do…"
-
i read up until shadow returning.
shadow died. he should never cmoe back again ever for anything.
sonic heroes and shadow the hedgehog are ridiculous enough after having their way with poor shadow. they ruined his character by having him come back.

Shadow returning may have been not so bad if they waited a little longer instead of going "fans like him let's give him his own game and make money right now." Couple that with their sudden shift from mysterious stranger of ambiguous moral alignment to generic angsty wristcutter antihero basically ruined any possibility for redemption of character after the resurrection.
-
The general consensus from what I've seen in certain places is "Shadow Sux!"
-
spits blood onto the computer monitor ala Space Ghost
My God! It's like someone took Invader Zim's voice, and put it on helium!
And a Sonic movie would be Sonic's burial, if not then someone pissing on his grave.
Shadow returning was never an issue.
What he should have become is a sort of "angel" type (not saying to become an angel), that fights EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE to help Sonic. He'll appear, kick ass, say something morally correct and vanish. A type of Batman if you will. No more questioning his past, no more extreme darkness, no more evil from him, and no more working on either side. That SHOULD have happened to him. Instead, Sega went…"GENTLEMEN (ATHF), we have now made Sonic's rival!" WRONG! Sonic's rival should always be Metal Sonic. Metal Sonic should never say a word (for the sake of bad voice acting). Sonic Heroes gave Metal Sonic his return, but his return was "MWHAHAHA, Eggman doesn't have shit on me!" Which was a mistake.
Yes, Metal Sonic has power over Eggman, but really, Metal Sonic shouldn't have a soul. We've already had three robots with souls that betrayed Eggman! Can't we have a robot who can kick ass and have its sole purpose be to kill?
-

Sonic also has a rival in Knuckles.
-
Knuckles is more among the lines of being once an enemy turned friend who's extremely gullible and has trust issues.
Metal Sonic, on the other hand, is closer to being a rival seeing as how the robot was designed to destroy Sonic but also believes he is the true Sonic, thus creating some robotic paradox that makes him borderline insane.
-
Never really thought about it like that (even after watching the OVA/Movie).

That's a worse idea than having Shadow come back at all. And 3? I remember Heavy and Bomb but whose the third?
-

Gamma. Omega, too, come to think of it.
-
Oh yea, forgot about them.
-
Well, the only other option would have been to keep Shadow dead, which I really wouldn't have mind, even when I liked Shadow in SA2.
Has anyone ever played Fire Emblem 7? If you have, remember Priscilla?

http://www.xboxgazette.com/img/sonic_18.jpg <–--Exhibit BSorry, this popped into my mind the other day.
-
If anything they should of explained it better on how Shadow Returned and shit. :/ Also maybe not giving him a game would of been better too.
and Shadow is now a mercenaries more than ever just Guns for Hire mostly to the G.U.N corps :/
I enjoyed Gamma and Omega. Also its funny how Gamma can kill/capture Shadow ala the story of Sonic 2006.

My only humble suggestion is that the Sonic series needs to back to its roots. Who else feels that way?
It would be cool if another Sonic 3D type game was made. That game was fun!

@Lobster:
Is this a real movie?
No. However, that doesn't mean it shouldn't be.
