Chapter 492 "Iron Mask Duval" Discussion
-
Duval is going to suck…..
-
and ellipses and two periods?
That's far out man.
But yeah, not a real exciting chapter. Hatchi being treated like crap by the Strawhats was kind of peculiar given how he was probably the most inept and thereby most likable member of Arlong's crew. But yeah, it was still kind of refreshing compared to the "LOL 4give 4get 4kidz" attitude that they have with previous villians.
-
I am just hoping we don't get a long reaction and lecture from Nami about how she feels about the fishmen.
-
-
@Battle:
Be sure to dock Oda's pay for this, Bossu. orz
The Checks in the mail….....

Re-reading the first chapter of one piece it struck me that the monster that swallowed that mermaid in last weeks chapter looked a lot like the one that ate the mountain bandit that kidnapped luffy in the first chapter. I thought maybe it was a hint that he was Duval as it seems odd that any of the people luffy has met so far on his journey could have improved and changed enough to be a captain in the new world

No it didn't. Are you retarded?
-
What wrong with you people!! They look just like cousins!! Serial!!
-
what the hell is going on here?
-
Ignorance and denial, that's what.
Anyway, kind of a 'meh' chapter. The gang's probably gonna get wiped out, then Duval steps in, and I dunno what. If he does have a Devil Fruit, it should be purely defense-based, to tie in with his armor and to change things up a bit. He's not going to get anywhere with a flintlock that he just broke, at any rate.
-
@kuma:
I think several points are interesting: his size, his appearance, the length of time he's been searching for this Strawhat, and the familiarity between him and his gang. So this gets rid of anyone we've seen somewhat recently, and most of the villains they've fought. Also - if he's not a Merman (and I guess we can't really tell at the moment), then why is he here, around Fishman island and surrounded by a crew of mostly fishmen?
what do you mean his crew made up of mostly fishmen most of them look human to me
I don't get where the human stuff comes from. How else would they be able to properly use the flying fish? All of them have been underwater for quite a bit.

That's quite obviously a speargun.
I doubt he has a DF, because their base doesn't seem the safest place to use a DF. The whole thing reeks of the Baratie Arc, really. Plus, Duval's men seem surprised that Luffy had a DF. I doubt they'd have that kind of reaction if Duval had one.
-
I agree it like the Baratie Arc with a dash of the Arlong arc for good measure.
-
Duval's base looks like it was lifted from the opening of waterworld.
-
Wow, is there ANYONE who liked this chapter? I think it was cool even though it proved my Krieg guess wrong.
-
Yeah, I liked it. Was cool.
-
I like the chapter too.

Well, every DF is different and unique in it's own way. It's like somebody spontaneously combusting in front of you, or you peeing out green urine. Two very different but equally surprising things.

It's worth noting that Arlong's group is one of the few villains that the Straw Hats has a very personal problem with. Most of Luffy's enemies before that were mostly just in the way or they had conflicting goals. Also, Nami (notably the first to forgive Hachi) is the only one who really knew the crew. The other straw hats of the day only saw bits and pieces. Zoros the one who saw most of him, and merely regarded him as an idiot who was his enemy.
-
Does Luffy even know what Arlong and crew did to Nami? He didn't want to hear it from Nojiko, but did he get told later? Or was Arlong to him just a bad man?

Arlong told Luffy what he did while they were in the map room, which led to his defeat. Also, Nami repeatedly shouted his name while stabbing herself in the arm right in front of him. He may not know the whole story, but he knows part of it.
-
It's always been one of my favorite points about Luffy that, without knowing the details, he essentially started that entire fight because Arlong made Nami cry.

I know he pretty much told him that he worked her hard with the maps, but did he tell him about Bellemere?
sgamer: Yeah, when he barged into Arlong Park and Arlong asked wtf is up Luffy saying "You made my navigator cry" was just awesome.
-
I had still had the idea in the last spoiler thread I think it was that Duval could be Mr 6 or Mr 12. One of the BW agents we never saw because they were Frontier Agents.
but why would they just be after one of the straw hats and not them all
and about the jolly roger there is a good picture of it on page 18 in chapter 491

Wow, is there ANYONE who liked this chapter? I think it was cool even though it proved my Krieg guess wrong.
Best chapter ever.
-
@Mizu:
I'll believe he's changed when I see him doing anything other than yelling and waving his arms threateningly…we already know he can do that :P
Also, I like his new shirtless, funny-hat-wearing image.Yes ussop will slowly replace Ace in everyone's heart. he can shoot fire too. and both r hot.

Duval is that unnamed marine from Enies Lobby.

Compared to Duval that random marine is small.
-
They also look nothing alike, he shows no sign of having an accent, and if he was a Marine, why would he have moved all the way out to the Red Line to become a body-seller? He would be going AWOL, and besides, it doesn't seem like he was all that strong anyway.
-
I don't buy Nami's acceptance of Hatchi.
He was the one who pointed out to Arlong that Bellmere didn't live alone, he was the one who found out and showed Arlong that somebody in Bellmeres house was a mapmaker, and he was the one who grabbed Nami as a child and carted her off right after Bellmere was killed.I hope she's feighning acceptance here and is actually going to do something different when he's actually "rescued".

I hope so too. Her acceptance of him simply comes to fast. I never had any doubt that she would accept him at some point but actually I´ve expected a bit more of character development through a bit of interaction between those two guys.
I mean if she accepts Hachi that quick, why does she feel uneasy to go Fishman Island then? If Hachi is harmless, I don´t see why meeting fishmen that were at no point related with the events at the Conomi Islands give Nami hard feelings.
-
She has Luffy or somebody beat the shit out of him. She than says that Cammy and Papangi will have to die, Hatchi begs to be killed in thier place. Cammy of course begs to be killed instead of Hatchan.
Nami than pulls out a rifle and walks up to Cammy, and kills her in front of Hatchi. Hatchi is than forced to become the next crewmember in order to pay for Papangi's life. Everyday he has to find a sunken treasure by diving or Papangi is killed. -
Now that you started it, I demand you show some graphic support for that development.
-
I'm think that Nami knows Hachi is kind of an idiot.
To my knowledge, Hachi has never shown really following Arlong's ideals, only following his orders. If I had to take a guess, I'd say he joined the Arlong crew because Chu and Kuroobi did, only because they've been friends since they were kids.http://groups.msn.com/onepiecemangav-2/hatachansseafloorstroll.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=10312
-
I bet we will get a flashback of Hachi cooking some Takoyaki for Nami.
After all, did not he say that was his dream? Maybe he kept it a secret from everyone but Nami (As a little girl).
Like Nami said, Hachi's not that bad, and I wouldn't be surprised if he was the only one of the fishmen that used to be nice with her when she was a little girl.
-
It seems like Nami's doing it more for Camie's sake than her just "forgiving" Hatchan. All the stuff with Arlong's crew had already been resolved and he wasn't really in a position to be able to harm them, not that he really could with their crew strength and the fear he already has for them.
And Duval's gun was pretty bad-ass until he destroyed it.
-
I bet he has a bigger one. Something like a Harpoon Machine Gun would be more of a match for Usopp and Luffy's long range atacks.
Anyway, did the Flying fish had cannons or were they just throwing cannon balls with their tails?
-
I think they just drop stuff off of them, last time I checked. Then again, I have never checked.
And maybe his armor has harpoon guns and cannons built into them like Kreig.
-
I kind of miss normal sized people.
-
He's only slightly above average.
-
yea, he definitly looks downright big.
jeez, and that's just him sitting.
-
Alright, thinking lately about Duval has made me think about who in their right mind he would have a grudge against. And going by what we know of, here's what I've come up with based on their past history:
-Luffy: Probably could be him but only if its anyone he met after he left his home. Duval does have a grudge and it could be short term…but from how he acts its probably a lot longer than the months Luffy's been out at sea...unless it happened while he was a kid growing up.
-Zoro: One of the strongest possibilities. Zoro had been a bounty hunter for a long time before the incident where Morgan's forces arrested him. With all the people bounty hunters come across, Duval probably would be someone that he either defeated years ago or even merely encountered.
-Nami: We know she was a member of the Arlong Pirates and knew how to defend herself from her battle with some of Buggy's men. But I doubt she's strong enough to really make that much of an effect on a guy like Duval unless he was a huge weakling.
-Ussop: Another one it probably isn't: Ussop mostly lived on a peaceful island outside that creepy butler at Kaya's.
-Sanji: Like Zoro, the possibility is extremely strong. All sorts of creeps appeared on the Baratie and Sanji was trained alongside an infamous pirate like "Red Leg Zeff". Sure he couldn't turn away a hungry person but he could beat them to a pulp if they disrespect him.
-Chopper: Extremely doubt it. Hardly anyone outside Hiruluk, Kureha and Wapol's forces (including Dalton) knew of the humanoid reindeer.
-Robin: Strong possibility but I don't think Oda's going that route. Robin did deal with all sorts of bad people long before meeting Crocodile but after all we've been through with W7/EL, I doubt we'll be meeting another this soon..but it could still happen.
-Franky: Another one that it probably could be but won't. The Franky Family were infamous as thieves and ship dismantlers and would take advantage of the weak if they had something they needed. We had plenty of Franky's story a while back but this could perhaps be someone his group ruined.
-Brook: Too new to the crew. I doubt even the WG know that the infamous "Humming Brook" is now a SH and that person would have waited fifty years to get him. -
@Tokoro:

It is clearly been shown he is looking for a male as he always says he or him. So unless a translation error it can't be Robin or Nami.
About Frank, you are forgetting the time before he came back to Water 7. He was gone for 4 years from the Spandam/Tom incident to when he returned back and went to meet with Iceburg. So we don't know what he did during those years besides upgrade his body.
-

Well, it could easily be a translation-error. I don't know exactly what they say in the japanese version, but keep in mind that "He" and "She" is the same word in japanese, so unless Duval specifically said "Ano otoko" or something like that, it's fully possible that it could be a woman he's looking for.

Not really, but he does say OTOKO 男 - おとこ in the raw anyway:
!
So he is a man, or mr.2 maybe -
maybe its axemorgan expect his axe is no longer there :/
-

Can't be due to Duval's height. He's much taller. I'm 100% sure Morgan wasn't Kuma sized like Duval is.
