It seems like everything has to be filmed dark these days. I have no idea why, but it does.

Do we call this "Batman Syndrome"?
Well, the movie isn't looking good right now, but I'm liking the new doll they made:
https://movieweb.com/disney-new-ariel-doll/?utm_term=Autofeed&utm_campaign=EchoBox-MW&utm_medium=Social-Distribution&utm_source=Facebook&fbclid=IwAR01kQdTPNr2nkL9zHo72jwX-qprDlxJkM0yXETVzKeF_KlocsPuZljYzMk#Echobox=1683574339Honestly, we the elders cannot help but do constant comparison, but if little kids like it then let them have their new Ariel. At least this one is trying SOMETHING new.
-
"Honestly, we the elders cannot help but do constant comparison, "
Maybe the issue is we specifically know the originals too well. MOST audiences the parents won't have rewatched the films since they were kids, so it'll only be comparing to their vague distant memory from 30 years ago... and kids will be seeing it for the first time as their first version.
While over here we're animation freaks that rewatch and study and listen to commentaries and behind the scenes stuff and just know a lot of nuances, even on the films that aren't personal favorites.
-
I never like the live action remakes
At best they can be comparable to the original there based off of, there never going to surpass it or even be as good
I’d say I have no idea why they keep doing this but that’s a lie, it’s all about the ridiculous amounts of money they make
-
I just hope that the new kids don't forget the original. Not that Disney would let them forget.
-

Hunchback has a shot at being better, because it can significantly cut back the role of the comic relief gargoyles which were always the weakest point, and the Broadway show is already a better version.
But then basically all the other remakes have just sort of ignored any improvements made on the broadway productions, including any real great songs or adjustments to pacing or tone... just blah.
-
Beauty and the Beast was an amazing broadway show (my 9-year old self approved!). Look what happened there.
And I know they had to use big names, but Aladdin already had a perfect Genie from the stage, should have just used him.
-
I'll never understand how this song didn't make it to the live show.
Or back when they were anmated new songs to insert into the dvd releases, why they chose "to be human again" instead of this. (Or in Lion King, Morning Report. THE WORST song in the show that's cut from modern performances.)
-
Well, it's not an encouraging clip from Under the Sea, but at least it's nice and bright?
https://www.etonline.com/the-little-mermaid-first-look-daveed-diggs-sebastian-sings-under-the-sea-exclusive-203858And if nothing else at least Sebastian has a little bit of expression on his face.
-
Little Mermaid is tracking to open at 110 - 120 million atm, the same as GoTG3.
-
Didn’t realize Daveed Diggs was Sebastian. A tiny bit more interested.
Then again, watched Wendy and Pan in the past week or so, and that was very mid. Didn’t hate it, just found it dull at various points. But I never loved the Peter Pan story like I did the movies from the 90s.
-
Okay, at least Melissa McCarthy looks like she is rocking it as Ursula:

I understand cutting Les Poissons, since that super heavily depends on the animation for comedy AND it's intentionally horrifying AND it's kind of an awful stereotype, but Daughters of Triton... for pacing reasons? That seems weird. Especially given this movie is an HOUR longer, and that song is only like 40 seconds.
Maybe they actually cut it because his daughters are hyper multi-ethnic now and they didn't want to draw attention to the fact that he's either been with a lot of women or they're all adopted
-
@Robby To be fair, he is based on a figure in Classical Mythology. Both his father and uncle are infamous for it.
-
Oh sure. Ancient gods sleeping around with dozens (hundreds?) with countless offspring is normal, but not in the DISNEY version.
Like in Hercules! Where Zeus and Hera are a loving couple who only have one chiild.
-

Shame, cause Les Poissons is a hilarious song. But without Rene Auberjonois it doesn't feel right anyway.
But now I'm worried they cut Fathoms Below too, since I love that as an opening.
-
They've sort of released a track list. Fathoms Below seems like it still there but... AFTER Part of Your World? They're holding all the songs till Ariel gets her big number I guess.
-
Seems rather dumb, doesn't it.
Speaking of dumb, Disney has finally cracked and will be removing some of their content from Disney+.
-
They cut Daughters of Triton but THIS gets to be in there?
It's the Morning Report or the gargoyle song from Hunchback all over again. If this was in the Broadway show, it'd be cut after six months.
I don't know if its Lin Manuel phoning it in or if its Aquafna but this is just ick.
Unless the sheer act of hearing the word "butt" amuses you.
None of the new songs are good. I hoped for more from Lin.
They have a song where Ariel sings about being in the human world... AFTER she loses her voice! Obviously an inner voice inside her head but... how do you miss the entire core of the movie THAT badly? (And know the Broadway show did the same thing, but it added like a dozen songs, and didn't cut any, because Broadway) She's supposed to be silent for a while! She sacrificed something! There's a COST.
-
Gotta be eligible for that Best Original Song oscar
-
OMG it's AWFUL. Alan, what are you doing to me?
-
How Hamilton was good and Lin Manuel is such mid?!
-
@pariston_hill said in Disney animation thread:

In the Heights, Moana, Encanto, and Vivo are all pretty decent songwise though none hit the heights of Hamilton. man was bound to miss on one song eventually.
Him AND Menkin though is sad. None of the new songs in this movie are their A game.
-
Howard Ashman's presence is still missed.
-
It’s actually getting good reviews
-
Looking at the jumble of reviewers this seems like a love it or hate it movie. But they all agree that Halle Bailey is great. Which is a very good thing.
Halle aside though, the drag queens of the world are not approving of Melissa McCarthy's makeup:
https://www.comicsands.com/melissa-mccarthy-ursula-makeup-drag-2660446139.html?utm_term=Autofeed&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Facebook&fbclid=IwAR23R51lXN3Gpdp4UwU4S90sRHtGhAZ1qogl8i1Fi1KTt2S7DLnY7QzqwrU#Echobox=1684776995It's not up to drag-queen standard and is really giving Divine, the inspiration for Ursula, a bad look. They make a good point: if you can't cast a real drag queen as Ursula (because in this case Divine was inspiration, not actually playing Ursula), then you can at least hire a real drag queen as her makeup artist.
And that's something I would have liked to see.
-
Sentiment on the positive side seems to contain a lot of "Not as good as the original, but not the worst live action remake!" which does little to dispel my sentiment of "why not just watch the original again then"
-
Checked out Poor Unfortunate Souls and then decided to skip the entire thing. Zero power, terrible visuals for such a huge budget, the actress doesn't capture her vibe at all. You really need an explosive, no punches pulling-drag queen for this, or at least someone who can get into it.
It's probably unfair to disregard the entire film because of a 5 minute sequence, but it's hard to get motivated to watch it all when they butcher one of the few things you liked in the original.
I don't even treasure Arielle like I'm some kind of purist or something. I think it's easily one the weakest Disney Movies - and honestly it didn't age well at all. But a live-action Ursula killing it would have caught my interest. Maybe even a movie focused around her (like those Maleficient movies). -
I still say they should have had Jack Black play Ursula. put Kyle Gass as Flotsam & Jetsam, and have them do a Tenacious D version of Poor Unfortunate Souls.
-
Aw man, don't ruin the whole thing for me.
-
An ok 67% on the tomatometer, which is better than what was expected (still not going to see it). What really strikes me is the 95%(!!) audience rating:
https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_little_mermaid_2023 -
The general consensus seems to be the new material is decent, particularly in regards to Eric, and that the acting is overall good, but everything from the original is a hollow shell and not nearly as good.

https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_little_mermaid_2023There's some serious moderation going on there. Check the all audiences score instead of verified, and it's closer to 50, and has 4 times as many votes.
Yeah some or a lot of that is gonna be racists, but not all of them.
The Metacritic score is in like the 20s, but that's too low, that's certainly been hit by hate campaigns.
So it's probably in the middle, closer to 75 or 80. They're just being hyper vigilant about not letting negatives through because this one was going to be a hot topic.
Aside from that right now it has like 2000 votes. Come back when it has 250,000 like the original.

It looks like the new Haunted Mansion movie is trying to be scarier, but not too scary:
Which, hey, is fine with me. I'm a wuss.
-
Be better than the last movie is what it should be trying to do.
We don’t need another X-Men Dark Phoenix.
-
We already had Muppets Haunted Mansion, they're not going to top that.
-
If they want to keep making movies based on their rides I don't know why they haven't done Space Mountain or Big Thunder Mountain Railroad yet.
-
Saw the Little Mermaid.
Halle can sing but less is more. She shouldn’t have had inner monologue songs while human.
I liked Eric and the romance was done well here. The extended date scenes and most of Kiss the Girl worked well. Think he was robbed in the final scene and he shouldn’t have been given a song.
Flounder and Sebastian looked terrifying.
Scuttle’s annoying but think that was the point in the original too. Also, weirdly find Scuttlebutt catchy.
King Triton was so flat and wooden during his scenes.
Ursula was great but I thought she was too hammy when looking for the potion that would turn her human. Was confused if her tentacles had minds of her own and didn’t think she bonded with her eels enough for the end to hit. Human Ursula was really cute though but that could just be me.
I thought the darkness bit was overblown, the movie seemed properly lit, but then that finale. Dang that was dark and they were trying to hide that cgi on giant Ursula.Liked Aladdin more, but think I like this more than Lion King.
-
To be fair, the finale in the original was very dark too (minus the magic and lightning). Was Under the Sea as good as people keep saying?
-
Better than I thought given there wasn’t actually sea creatures playing musical instruments. Visually it’s pretty cool. Bugged though because Ariel sang parts of the song. I dunno why they couldn’t get background singers. Kiss the Girl did the same thing where only Sebastian, Flounder, and Scuttle sang the song. But Under the Sea bothered me more given Ariel was vibing with the song like she agrees with Sebastian but then bounces at the end which seems odd.
Also they didn’t have Flounder surprise her with the Eric statue. Bummed, but they minimized Flounder’s role here so…

This is cute. Disney is releasing several of their olden day shorts on Disney+ to celebrate their 100th anniversary:
https://movieweb.com/disney-100th-anniversary-bringing-back-1920s/?utm_source=MW-FB-P&utm_medium=Social-Distribution&utm_campaign=MW-FB-P&fbclid=IwAR0UtQ5o-zfrG-VOedODlAUs2j7qIuzipP_rdtFkzPijL5j68WkTVftRFp8I love the old shorts, so this makes me happy.
-
I normally would be happy but they should have done this eons ago. Still since I dont want to be a jerk I'll just be happy about this.
-
Their archive is a hidden weapon. That said, what better time to open it than their 100th anniversary?

Given the hard times they’re going through presently, some of it self inflicted they need to do something.

"For the 100th anniversary" Disney's re-releasing some of the hits back to theaters.
Pirates of the Carribean, Toy Story, Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, The Incredibles, Coco, The Lion King and Moana.
Well, if the 100th anniversary is only celebrating the last 30 years.
I'll probably go for at least a few of those.
And I get it, you gotta go for the BIG hits that are guaranteed to make money, especially since so much of the catalogue is streaming. No one is going to go see Snow White in theaters, regardless of how important it is, Pinnochio was never a big one for them, and Fantasia has never made money outside of the drug era of the 70', as much as I would loooooove to see it big, so I get not doing those.
You can't do Little Mermaid when they put out the live action one five minutes ago. Most of the old live action films aged poorly and are super campy nowadayhs. And no one cares about the post Walt-era from 1970 to 1987, I get why all of those are being left out even if I love a few of them,
But not a single movie Walt was involved in? How are they not throwing up Mary Poppins, Bambi, Jungle Book, 101 Dalmations, Lady and the Tramp, Roger Rabbit, Nightmare Before Christmas?
Moana and Coco are both within the last few years. If you're gonna do that why not one of the pandeic screwed movies like Encanto?
I just do not understand the super limited choices here aside from box office it had at the time with no consideration for what it may have gained since.
-

In order, Suffragette Song is considered too woke, too anti-gun, looks cheap, looks cheap, racist Asian stereotypes, advertisement for rival companies, not exactly what people think of when one says "Disney" film.
-
A little surprised they aren't doing even Cinderella. Cinderella is like the first one you think of when you think "Disney Princess" (or I do, anyway). And to my memory there's nothing "offensive" to find in there other than, I dunno, not being feminist enough. Disney knows how much people love Maleficent, so also a little surprised they aren't doing Sleeping Beauty.
If I see any of the ones they are releasing I'm going to see Beauty and the Beast. Still my favorite.

Why just 8 films? Why not 10? or 30? Or heck, 52? Make it a year of celebrating. They're digital now so its not like it costs them anything to print and distribute anymore. At least get something from a few more decades than they have.
-
Also surprised they aren't doing Lilo and Stitch.
