The punchline of the joke comes when somebody goes into great detail about what they're talking about it and Luffy immediately disregards what they say and comes to the conclusion that whatever they were talking about is some unknown and mysterious thing.
Also, Luffy doesn't say "Can you help him?" He doesn't say "Can you anything". He doesn't ask questions like that. He makes statements, "Help him!" "You will help him." That's another core part of his character.
Once again, I agree with CHaragon. I hadn't even noticed why dub Luffy keeps feeling so…"off" . i assumed it was the voice, but it's really that the writers arent getting his personality when they do rewrites. Luffy's personality is half normal and half quirk and I think they're sorta seeing him as the generic, normal kid hero so far and thus his dialogue is more Ash Ketchum than Monkey D.
I rly hope they eventually get that with Luffy's character more than any character in OP, it's best to stick to literal translations as much as possible. Alot of his quirks and stuff become running gags or jokes later anyways.
Oh, I don't know. Your guess is as good as mine. I have no idea how the writing/recording/dvd-producing process works at all. It's a mystery process.
LSMIC! Good show sir..good show.
Yes that's very true, that IS a good point. I'll give you that… BUT as long as we don't hear "It's my dream to become King of the Pirates!" I won't get too pissed.
Wtf…? Well, now I can't wait to hear him say it in the FUnidub. I'm pretty positive he will eventually since he says it alot in the original version and there's virtually nothing wrong with the line. It was the 4kid's dubbie's delivery that killed it. I love how you guys are bashing anyone who questions or points out (OCCASIONALY) legit problems with the dub or script and then whine about non-problems like "Oh shat! He better not say King of Pirates! It's pirateking! Why?! Just because I like it better!"
And why wouldnt he say it's his dream. Newsflash: It is.
I really didn't expect them to realize it was a running joke, seeing as these are the first episodes they've worked on.
I hope that IS the case, but still it's disapointing. Not checking for running gags like this seems sloppy and unprofessional. They could have easily consulted a staff member who spoke Japanese and was an avid OP fan to clear things like that up from the start. I'm not used to seeing mistakes like this, which is why I get the feeling they're dropping the gag alltogether.
Maybe.. it just sounded odd to me coming out of Zoro's mouth.
A few other ppl complained, so u arent the only one. It only stood out to me abit, but I didnt see it as too OOC.
