Who are your favorite historical pirates that you like reading about?
I enjoy learning about Captain Kidd, Cheng I Sao and my top favourite Gertrude Stubbs aka Gunpowder Gertie. I try to find info on my ancestors but can't find much.

Well, the only one I really know anything about is Captain Kidd….so I guess he would be my favorite.
Edit: Oh, and from what I've read about him (which isn't a whole lot), I also like Samuel Bellamy.
I've always found Blackbeard very interesting. Apparently he used to stick slow burning cannon fuses under his hat during battle to make his appearance more frightening to his enemies.
How freakin' cool is that? :P
I don't know of any real pirate names :P.
Yeah I've always been more interested in cowboys….but maybe I'll begin reading up on some of these guys.
Blackbeard was always pretty cool.
I'm trying to think of other… let's see, Henry Morgan was pretty awesome in the Jamaican area (he pretty much invented the concept of "buccaneering"), and I always liked this fellow named Thomas Tew. He took a chance and sailed out to the Red Sea and by a stroke of extreme luck he ran into one of the Great Mogul's ships filled with gold and ransacked it. Later on he went on another expedition in the Red Sea and got nailed in the gut by cannonfire. :P
Francis Drake is probably my favorite, however, even though he's more of a privateer. Blackbeard is also an old great.
For me, its Sir Francis Drake, probably the world's most famous "legal" pirate.
From what I hear, Kidd was a dirty bastard. besides him, I don't know of many other real pirates…
I'll go with Blackbeard as well. I like Henry Morgan too.
Gotta go with Blackbeard!
He finally died after a long and brutal fight where he suffered 5 gunshot wounds and over 20 stabs to his face and body.
I can't wait until OP's Blackbeard shows up again!
Maddox.
Ooh, tough question!
I think Black Bellamy might be my favorite. I love the museum with all his pirate treasure on Cape Cod.
Cutlass Liz and Red Leg Greaves come in second.
The romantic in me is a fan of Alvilda.
Charlotte de Berry was cool.
I also like Gunpowder Gertie
William Fly was pretty cool, or at least his execution was.
I was waiting to see who Vilda picked. :P

Yeah, haha. Me too. I think she's one of the very few people on here who can actually name more than 1 real pirate.
July the Pirate: "So who's your favorite real pirate?"
Battle Franky: "Blackbeard!"
Cap'n Carter: "Hmmm… Blackbeard."
Buccaneer: "Umm... Blackbeard."
GunMetal: "Uhhhhh... umm... Black... Bear...d? "
VildaHawk: "WELL! There's Henry Morgan, Francis Drake, Black Bellamy and Cutlass Liz, Charlotte de Frankenberry, Captain Crunch, and...."

Tazmo.
Blackbeard is my favorite traditional pirate; the guy had style and is really the archetype pirate captain. Look at LeChuck for instance and tell me that somebody didn't use Blackbeard as an inspiration for his look.
If you count privateers, then Raphael Semmes is up there as well along with Sir Francis Drake.
Yeah, Blackbeard's always a classic one to pick. I also have to go with Anne Bonney and Mary Read, just for being so totally ruthless; not anyone I'd care to spend time with personally, but interesting historical figures. Ching Shih seemed like she had a hell of a lot of brains, if not some pretty strict rules regarding the treatment of their allies and female prisoners. Jane de Belleville has some really interesting imagery associated with her, too, which appeals to my artistic side. Bellamy seemed pretty interesting, had a bit of a romantic streak in him, if the reports haven't been romanticized themselves over the years. Plus that's just a really cool name. ;)

Damn right.
Probably Calico Jack 'cause he was famous for wearing strange outfits. Female pirates are pretty cool too.
One udda thing: Who exactly is that one pirate (can't remember his name, but Roronoa Zoro's name was based on it)
L'ollonois, I think.
My favorite real-life pirates?…. those people in Hong Kong that put out the atrociously subbed bootleg OP collections. Now that I have a fast connection, I don't need them anymore, but when I was on dial-up, it was the only way to see One Piece!
Runner up goes to the people at WonderCon who were selling DVDs of old TV cartoons. Finally, a second-generation-VHS-quality Real Ghostbusters collection to call my own. Yo ho ho!

Ooooo! Did they have the fake Ghostbusters as well? The one with the chick from the future and the gorilla???
Also, how about Cities of Gold?
my favirote is Dragut Reis one of the strongest pirates

He was one cruel mofo. He and Ned Low were probably the cruelest pirates out there.
Stede Bonnet was funny. He was so not cut out to be pirate.
Was he the governor that wanted to be a pirate? I remember hearing about him in my history class.
Eh? How can a guy named Ned be cruel?
Was he the governor that wanted to be a pirate? I remember hearing about him in my history class.
No, but the governer of Tortuga gave him a letter of marque… His real name is David Jean Nau.
There were plenty of pirates who later became governers, though. And a number of pirate hunters who became pirates themselves.
EDIT: Wait, you did mean L'Ollonais, right?
Oh, and Buc: L'Ollonais would rape and torture before murdering his victims. He was said to have once (at least) ripped the heart out of Spanish soldier taken prisoner, and then ate it.
I don't know my pirates very well so I have to go with Kidd because he is usually attributed as having created the Oak Island Money Pit which just fascinates me. Nobody knows for sure who created the Money Pit though and some even attibute it to Blackbeard since he said his treasure was "where none but Satan and myself can find it." So, if a pirate was responsible for the Money Pit then my favorite would be that pirate.
I know about that L'ollo dude, but what about ol' Neddy?
I'd go with the Knights of Templar hiding the Holy Grail. Makes the most sense….
EDIT: Referring to the money pit.
I have to admit that the main reason I like Kidd isn't really because of the historical Kidd, but because of the Captain Kidd character from the fighting game series World Heroes.
The series is not historically accurate at all, but it's still one of my favorites.
WH Captain Kidd - Sorry that he is hanging poor Jeanne (a character very loosely inspired by Joan of Arc), but that was the only animated gif I could find of his hang-them-with-an-anchor super move.
Anyway, even though the real Captain Kidd wasn't like the video game version, it did get me interested in reading about the real one.

You mean the Barbarossa brothers ;)
As for Anne Bonny, why the hate? Pirates did more than two-time their women. They like four and five-timed them! Besides, who could resist a guy like Calico Jack?but what about ol' Neddy?_
Ah, he would also tear out the hearts of his victims - but he would make another victim eat it. He also once made the commander of a whaler eat his own ears - salted, of course.
Awesome. Steady Neddy and his pirate gang.
And if I remember correctly, Blackbeard got 12 women pregnant. T3h m@nh00r.
true vilda but there is something else that makes me hate anne bonny
well i can't really decide , since the vast majority of sailors in history was more or less pirates.

Which is…?
why the hate for anne bonny? i think she has a great story. she and mary read…
however, i'll have to go with the "sea queen" Granuaile O'Malley, or Grace O'Malley...
i dont no why i hate her
I always liked Blackbeard since I read about him as a kid, along with the likes of Captain Kidd, Barbarossa,Mary Read, etc. I guess that interest in pirates as a youth helped lead the way to OP.
surprised the drone posters haven't come into this thread yet to say "A FIVE YEAR BUMP JESUS CHRIST HOLY FUCK WAS THAT REALLY NECESSARY OH MY GAAAAAAAAAAH"

Lol, true that. There are some real gems in the AP graveyard waiting to be raised but you know how people feel about Necromancy. I love history whether it's about earth or just a forum.
Blackbeard was the one I was always reading about, caught some TV Movie on him too. All the legends about him such as the matches in his beard, and the arsenal of weapons (several pistols) around his wasit and so on. He's just always been what defined a pirate to me.
I have a pirateology book and learned about the Barbarossa (Redbeard) Brothers there, and certainly want to learn more.
Quite honestly, Anne Bonny. Oh, and Black Bart Roberts.
Reading about La Buse/Olivier Levasseur was quite a blast. Even more so with One Piece in mind.
Blackbeard & Barthomew Roberts
Sam Bellamy. His semi-famous speech is awesome.
Of the real pirates, I'd have to say that Blackbeard has always been my favorite. I've watched documentaries and movies about him since I was a little kid :>
In reading up on Kidd, I can't help but feel that the historical figure was a short-tempered man with perpetual ill-luck who depended on support from people that would rather not throw away their own careers just to save his neck. Somewhat tragic, actually.
Similarly, I have to wonder how Ned Low would have turned out if his wife hadn't died. Maybe he would have led an honest life.
Bartholomew Roberts. Black Bart. Now he was a magnificent bastard. Oh, and Jean Lafitte, the man who made Andrew Jackson reverse his opinion of the Baratarian "Privateers".
