no that's the whole movie, ask Greg he saw the whole thing.
One Piece The Movie - The Desert Princess and the Pirates

-
Okay, I just finished watching the movie…...
Geez, I remember all the rabid hatred that this movie has been getting, not just here, but on the K-F forums as well! Now that I've seen it for myself, it was NOWHERE near as bad as people have made it out to be! Sure, the pacing in the first half was rushed to the point of being ridiculous, which is the root of most of the negativity, but aside from that, it was actually a pretty decent movie.
If I could change one thing about it, then I'd definitely squeeze about 5-10 more minutes in there. Hell, it may not seem like much, but you can do a lot in that amount of time! For example......
The Marines
I admit it, the World Government's naval forces are sure scarce in this film, considering their first major appearance is at the ass-end of the film, and you don't even SEE any of them, just their ships! It would've been sweet to have Smoker and Tashigi on the scene, plus a Hina cameo at the end would've been the icing on the cake.
The Fights
The battles between the Straw Hats and the Baroque Works Agents could've been extended EASILY! Here's a list of things that could've made the fights better!
-I disliked the Uso-Cho vs. Mr. 4 Pair battle, because the lack of Usopp Pound really bothers me. If they actually bothered to work the Usopp Pound scene into the battle, I'd be happy.
-Although it was my least-favorite fight, I'd have loved to see the comedic scene of Nami trying to figure out how to use the Climatact while fighting Miss Doublefinger (she was TOTALLY feeling her up at the end XD). Nothing fancy, just a 10-second montage of Nami performing Fine, Cloudy, and Thunder Tempo, ending with her flipping out in frustration. Right before the scene changes, Nami could've found Usopp's battle tips on the back of the instructions.
-Zoro vs. Mr. 1 was awesome! The animation was excellent, but making the fight a wee bit longer wouldn't have hurt.
-Sanji vs. Mr. 2 was merely okay to me. Maybe I'm just so spoiled by the original anime version of their handstand kick battle, which was ultimately superior in every way!
ONOES!!! WHERE'S ACE?!!!
-Maybe it's just me, but the lack of Ace doesn't affect anything.
The War
-There wasn't much build-up to the war, and that's why this movie should have been longer.
More thoughts later!
-
I liked it! Of course there was quite a lot taken out that I think should have been left in, it was kinda rushed too. The animation looked like a mix between Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Islandand The Giant Mechanical Soldier of Karakuri Castle, and there were a lot of scenes where the characters were drawn kinda badly, the music fit in nicely with the scenes and I did not really care that Dvorak 4th movement wasn't played because I was paying to much attention to Gum Gum Storm! Now I understand this movie really wasn't made to appease the fans but more to garner the attention of non One Piece fans which is why they should have left all the fights intact, i'm sure new fans would be more interested in the 5ton hammer than just skipping directly to the end of it… The stuff that was added was also a nice touch. They also seemed to have done a better job with the comedic scenes than the action sequences, I probably would have enjoyed it more if I had not already seen the majority of Alabasta though.
Overall it definitely wasn't as bad as Greg and Crossbones made it seem but it definitely could have been better than it was, I say this was a job almost well done for Toei.
-
It was nowhere near the excellence that was Dragonball 10th Anniversary, but I still enjoyed it.
First problem: The Baroque Works Agents can now Teleport. The whole "Rainbase" scene was not well handled.
Second Problem: The Fights. The most truncated seemed to be Nami's, which was my favorite fight. Was not impressed. However Zoro's was excellent. Was very happy with the animation and how it went. The same with Usopp's. While the lack of Usopp Pound killed me, I really loved how it turned out. Sanji's fight seemed too short, but what was there I was impressed.
Third Problem: Lack of Marines. Everyone has mentioned this.
Fourth Problem: NO BATHHOUSE!
Fifth Problem: Pell's Grave. Should not be there.Enough Problems. I loved the animation. Really made it shine. The whole last fight really stood out in my mind. Croc vs Luffy looked astounding. And the whole Bomb sequence was done great.
And of course there is Robin sneaking onboard. Pure win right there.Overall I'd give it a C. It really needed to be longer.

I'm almost certain the reason people aren't realizing the absurdity of the film is because they don't understand it.
That's not to say, "They're not grasping the inner conflict displayed by blah blah blah". I mean they're not hearing the lines in their own language come out like grass through a goose and merely seeing pretty images flash before their eyes. I have NO idea how you can't burst out laughing at Luffy's instantanious warping in turning against Vivi. I was in stitches.
Which brings up another questionable point.
With the amount of childish bitching and moaning poured upon the television animation, I don't know why people aren't frothing at the mouth.
This makes absolutely no sense to me.
I've tried thinking about it for 10 minutes and I simply can't wrap my mind around it.
Here I am, one of the few people that actually stands up for the TV animation, and this movie completely turned me off with its inexcusably low-level piss-ant animation. Liking or not-liking movie 6's animation is another issue. It's not low quality, it's simply different.
But here I paid 18 dollars for a ticket because I expected to see something I can't see for free on television.
This has me completely baffled and I have no idea how to interpret it.
It's not that because I hated the film I disn't expect people to like it.
But for people to praise the animation after months upon months of whining about the TV animation is just….I'm just at a loss for words.
-
That torrent doesn't work.
'i lol'd!'
That movie is horrible, hahahahahaha! If Toei keeps this up it should be known as the QUALITY animation company, not Gonzo.
-
II have NO idea how you can't burst out laughing at Luffy's instantanious warping in turning against Vivi. I was in stitches.
I was too busy laughing at Sanji's "OY LOOK UP THERE!"… that was really bad... I actually skipped the first 20 minutes of the movie first time I saw it. I wanted to get straight to the action.. thanks for reminding me to watch that insanity though.
-
I'm back, and I realize that Toei just made Pell's survival an even BIGGER steaming pile of bullshit than it was originally!
The aftermath of the battle is featured during the credits, similar to the aftermath scene in episode 130. People are rebuilding and going back to their normal lives, and you even see King Cobra and Chaka at Pell's grave. Now, onto the real subject of bullshit… Vivi running across the desert sands to give Pell a big hug!
Touching, yes? Sure it is, but there's ONE THING wrong......
PELL DOESN'T HAVE A SINGLE SCRATCH ON HIM!
At least in the original story he was bandaged up and walking with a crutch! However, in this sequence, Pell is A-OK! I could see if he were shown with SOME kind of visible sign of injury, but even his goddamn clothing was unscathed by the blast (which makes the original seem like a simple fireworks show)!
As for what I'd like to have seen, they could've thrown in the exchange between Nico Robin and Luffy, where she tells him that she has no place to go or nobody to return to, and he accepts her without a second thought. Then right as the screen goes black, you hear everyone shout "LUFFY!!!" while Sanji shouts "MELLORINE!"
REALLY wishing this movie was longer...... ah well.
-
there's Pell's death for anyone who hasn't seen it yet but would like to. Tha'ts the only other scene worth watching besides Storm.
-
I am not so sure that more time would help it. :/
Like Greg said, you can do things in 1.5 hours. What is lacking here is directing talent, imo. Some things would inevitably be cut, but the movie could still be fluid and watchable. -
Sooo.. I just watched the movie, and I have to add o the dislike of it… they basically took out everything I LIKED about Alabasta (the comedy, the part at Rainbase, the individual strawhat fights, and marines and the discussion of "justice" (which almost certainly will be a MAJOR story point later on int he main story) , Mr. 2's friendship saving them) and left in ... crap, lots of Vivi (who i wasn't super fond of before, and now dislike immensely), Vivi screaming, etc.
And WTF was up with all the Nami scenes being reduced to 100% fanservice? To the point of being creepy...
So I guess not ALL the even numbered movies are good. ::keeps fingers crossed for movie 9::
IMO, they should have started the movie @ Rainbase, then they could have left out all the confusing crossing the dessert sidestories.
I can't imagine anyone who really loves OP loving this movie, and I can't imagine it making people unfamiliar wit the series interested in it (enought to watch 300+ eps)
-
Didn't like storm. I'm just spoiled by the anime's portrayal tho probably.
Thing I found cheesy was how croc's boddy didn't move at all when getting hit by luffy's punches.
wtf was that tower btw?
I think the whole thing was abad idea now. At first I thought it was going to be a whole new set-up of alabasta. Instead they just attempted to compact the alabasta arc into 2 and 1/2 hours and serenade us with new animation.
With that approach, it was bound to fail. I mean if you are like me, you enjoyed all of alabasta. which was waaaaaay over 2 and 1/2 hours and couldn't have maintained the same quality shortened.
So this movie just had no chance.
From waht it sounds tho, it is worse than that. It sounds like a movie that people who didn't see alabasta couldn't even follow. THAT is why it is a bad movie.
Still have yet to see it to form my own opinion about it's quality tho.
Edit: Pell scene sucked too. Again, anime did it much much better.
I mean the explosion looked like it would have taken out half the country, not just the palace square. Shit was HUGE!(too big). Also it lacked showing the faces of the characters. Like Pell and his eyes closed, vivi and numerous other people looking in awe. Scene lacked any impact without them.
Music should have stopped too, but w/e.
Anime again was far superior.
-
That, though this is really minor, the white explosion makes it a lot more dramatic then the yellow.
-
Hahahahaha so now Pell is Goku and can survive an exploding sun, awesome!
-
How did you like Pell being bent into two parallel halves? That was freaking legendary.
It was from that moment I just gave up.
I stand by my opinion that Storm was sweet though. I liked how they handled it and I think the spire was a cool touch.
Again, if they bothered to put any work into this film (if not the animation then at least gutting the story) it could have been fantastic, even legendary. As it stands it's the biggest ripoff and abuse of the OP label I've seen which is saying something in a merchandising insane country like Japan.
Really a shame as I had such high hopes for a Japanese animation film tradition (retellings) which have not been limited to mere cut-and-paste throwaways.
Again, no 'teh hate' towards anyone who actually enjoyed it. I just personally find it hard to accept this steaming pile as being on par with even the simplest of the OP films.
-
is the dragon ball 10th anniversary the labelled "dragon ball - the red ribbon army?" just to be sure to know what you guys are talking about, knowing that it's the only db movie i've ever seen.
-
It's Dragon Ball - Saikyo e no Michi (The Road to the Strongest).
-
I made it 3/4 of the way through. I don't intend to finish it any time soon. I was able to finish even the crappiest of the other movies, but not this one.
Well okay, I'll probably just skip to Storm and Pell's "death," and if it's included the Movie 9 preview, but that's it.
-
Movie 8 crocodile is too different from alabasta crocodile , M8 croc act like a random thug with super powers , he doesn't have this majestic feeling that make the true croc so awesome.
He reminds me of Hardner from rave than crocodile from one piece .EDIT: WTF!!!! Crocardner(lol! that guy in the movie is not croc.) can fly , i mean we can see him flying several time during the fight , and all the others fight were zapped ,and is it me or do the entire cast of the movie seems to be in hurry ?
-
Well, what can I say that hasn't been said? This movie was rushed. Like fucking mad. Also, the animation was on par with a well animated episode on the anime. Well, maybe a little better. But am I the only one who noticed that Vivi, Croc and most of the other Arabasta "exclusive" characters are drawn amazingly on every scene? I don't know about you, but the Straw Hats look like SHIT compared to Vivi.
Disappointing.
-
Vivi looks like shit with those huge sparkly anime eyes.
-
I saw Movie 8 on the Internet and i like the Movie it was a great remake,to bad Usopp Pound and Ace weren't in the movie but we got Naked Nami! can't wait for Movie 9 with Franky
-
What the hell? Is my computer on perpetual fast-forward or something? Watching this reminds me of Warioware. Spastic, rushed, and I can't tell what's going on most of the time. I was a bit skeptical, but wow. You would think that a movie would use more dramatic pauses, or any pauses for that manner.
-
Eh, it's definitely not what I'd call a good movie, but I'd rewatch it before movies 1, 5, or 7. I can't sit through those three, and I've never finished movie 1 due to sheer boredom. Yeah, movie 8 was rushed and they didn't do nearly as good a job with the story as they could have, but there were some things about it I enjoyed. In fact, I'll even say I sort of enjoyed how much shorter the fights were; not to say I didn't love some of the things they cut out, but honestly, one thing that bugs me about the anime is how much they stretch the fights out with endless talking. I prefer it when, in fights to the death (or whatever you want to call it in OP), that people actually seem like they're concentrating on not dying/beating the other person senseless instead of telling them their life story. Maybe that's just me, though. But yeah, I'll watch it when K-F gets to it, but otherwise I'm not that hopped up on it.
-
Well, thank god my time is worthless or I'd have something to complain about for watching that.
-
Does anyone have the BGM to movie 8? Crossbones posted it long ago, but I can't seem to find it now… o.o
-
ok, finally saw it, here's my view on it.
they did the best that could've been done.
HOLD ON NOW, ok, lemme just say this: remaking an arc is a bad idea. NOW, they did a decent job. the PROBLEM here, is that because they have so much to cram into an hour and a half, it's not that they cut corners, there' simply things they didn't explain. like the dog gun, and they skipped all kinda coolies, and yeah.
i thought it was very good. CERTAINLY not the best movie….prolly 4th best.
it was the best they could've done with such a bad idea, as in, remaking an arc.
also,
! did pell die?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
maybe im crazy?
also ,gomu gomu storm was good, and the last 15/20 minutes was good. i LOVED seeing
! robin and her little part by the boat
really cool to see that.
OVERALL, i give it a 7.7, MAYBE 8 outta 10. i htought it was really cool, but in the end, the idea in the 1st place is what ruined the movie.
AND YES, THE ANIME DEFINETLY DID IT BETTER, obviously…...except gomu storm.
-
It's Dragon Ball - Saikyo e no Michi (The Road to the Strongest).
And that's "Dragonball: Path to Power" over here, right? I own that on DVD, fricken love it.
-
Thanks, i wasn't sure about the official name in english. That's probably the best anime remake i ever seen.
-
Alright everyone lets pull together to find the Movie 8 soundtrack. I just spent 3 hours searching for it. Wherrrrreeee isss ittt!? D=

No they didn
t and no it isn
t.Remaking an arc is not a bad idea. Remaking a fantastic arc like Arabasta is a GREAT idea.
They did not
remake
the story though. They cut bits and pieces out of the story. That`s it.What would be remaking it? Adding new/different villains. Updating attacks/moves to what they can currently perform. Changing the flow/direction of the story which could even include an entirely different goal for Croc not to mention an entirely different finale.
I feel sick bringing it up so many times but watch the Dragon Ball 10th Anniv. film and see just what can be accomplished with a remake. It
s not the greatest movie ever made but it deserves comparison because it
s the same concept pulled off with far more style and grace. If you like what they did, cool, but there
s no way one could argue they did
the best with what they had` because projects from over a decade ago have far outshined this pathetic whimper of a film. -

The plot was fine; Now, adding bits and pieces to it… THAT would be a better idea than completely changing it. For example, We could see Mr. 11's partner, out for revenge. We could see the never revealed Mr. 10 and Mrs. Saturday (That's a guess), we could see how Bon-chan initially made contact with Cobra (Enabling him to steal his appearance), among other things. Those little things they could have added would have made for a much more fleshed out movie. Adding new moves and new abilities that the Strawhats don't obtain until much later arcs is just silly. Adding new techniques that are unique, however, would be a better idea.
-

Really? Because I think it would have been fantastic if they updated the villains just as well.
A certain other remake was able to take this:
http://www.rixrobots.com/DBZ01.jpg
And transform it into a giant beam shooting death monger.
We could see Mr. 11's partner, out for revenge.
That is completely changing it and those are exactly the kind of ideas they should have run with.
Adding new moves and new abilities that the Strawhats don't obtain until much later arcs is just silly.
How do you figure? If they
re fighting new villains what
s the problem? Furthermore, movies never fit into any serious continuity so what would be wrong with updating at least a few things as opposed to doing EXACTLY the same thing we saw years ago?Adding new techniques that are unique, however, would be a better idea.
I agree that this would also be a positive addition, and yet, nothing.
-

I think you misunderstand. I'm not against the villians getting more moves. It would've been also quite neat if we got their real names, or at least some kind of back story that explains their reasons for joining Baroque Works. For example, Mr. 3 could have been some kind of sculptor from Statue Island in North Blue who was approached with a Devil Fruit and promised power, etc., if he joined Baroque works. And so on and so forth. I'd be all for that, especially if they showed a bit more about Crocodile's past.
What I'm against is giving them some weird moves that overpowers them. The general idea is that either the Strawhats fight progressively stronger opponents, or progressively more intelligent opponents, or both. Suppose we rewrote the whole bomb incident to be a giant laser that was to be shot from Lassoo's mouth. And then, when they knock out Lassoo in the clock tower, they find out he was set to self destruct thanks to a seastone bomb strapped to his chest, so Pell flies it away. How would you feel about that?
That is completely changing it and those are exactly the kind of ideas they should have run with.
Not necessarily. It could have been something like this:
1. Smoker and the marines head to Rain Dinners.
2. En route, they encounter Mr. 11's former partner.
3. Smoker and she have a brief fight.
How do you figure? If they
re fighting new villains what
s the problem? Furthermore, movies never fit into any serious continuity so what would be wrong with updating at least a few things as opposed to doing EXACTLY the same thing we saw years ago?The whole point of Gear 2nd was that it was created as a result of Kuzan's absolute thrashing of Luffy, and his realization that in order to progress, he would need to find a way to take his body to a new level. Now, I'm not against some strange, unique moves in a movie, but anything that incorporates something learned further down the line seems way too much out of place.
-
The more I think about it, the more I'm certain that I enjoyed the movie, regardless of it's many flaws. I also stand by my belief, that if the movie were 10 minutes longer, it would have made a world of difference!
As you all know, the events of Alabasta left Tashigi emotionally broken, questioning the true meaning of justice. It was a nice character subplot for the series, but I'd prefer it if Toei actually included it in the movie. I mean, it was Tashigi who arrested Crocodile and stripped him of his position as a Shichibukai!
-
meh I guess liking the movie is one thing, saying "The did the best they could" is completely another
-
I mean, from what I can tell, the movie even completely failed to capture that complete sense of futility that we feel for Vivi when Crocodile tells her about the bomb in the tower - she feels like there is NOTHING she can do to save her people in time. The movie (again, from what I can tell/recall) didn't really capture this - they found the freaking bomb in 30 seconds!
Since the movie focused so heavily on Vivi, they should have at least tried to capture this a bit more.
The strawhats werelike, unimportant side characters. LoL
-
What I'm against is giving them some weird moves that overpowers them.
But what difference does it make within the context of the film? It's not overpowering anyone because it's not part of the story.
Certainly you would agree Luffy didn't 'learn' Gear 2nd from fighting a robot.
Not only are you taking it to an extreme, that's also an awful idea.
You can't possibly put that on the same pedastal as offering Chopper could use Monster Point or Sanji could use Diable Jambe.
Not necessarily. It could have been something like this:
1. Smoker and the marines head to Rain Dinners.
2. En route, they encounter Mr. 11's former partner.
3. Smoker and she have a brief fight.
Right, like I said, changing the original story. That's what it is. And I'm agreeing that those types of changes would have been positive.
The whole point of Gear 2nd was that it was created as a result of Kuzan's absolute thrashing of Luffy, and his realization that in order to progress, he would need to find a way to take his body to a new level. Now, I'm not against some strange, unique moves in a movie, but anything that incorporates something learned further down the line seems way too much out of place.
Now I see your problem.
You're assuming the film has to take place in the actual timeline.
If you're going to limit it to that then why bother changing anything?
You're offering ideas about Mr. 11's partner etc. but simultaneously suggesting it should fall in line with the original story.
You can't have your cake and eat it too.
-
So I'm guessing the movie should have been a Dragonball Movie 4, but ended up a Dragonball Movie 1
I sort of agree with the sentiment that the movie should have been a rewrite instead of just an extremely condensed version of the canon material. I'll wait for it to be subbed before actualy watching it, but I do imagine the film to progress in an overly expedient manner. I'll probably get quite a bit of unintentional humor out of it, though.
I did watch the clip of storm and, while not bad, the coreagraphy did seem questionable. And I do agree that the replacement voiceactor for Crocodile was rather poor.
-
…it's the same guy. Just watch the movie.
-
@Anime:
…it's the same guy. Just watch the movie.
But his performance was nowhere near the original scene. It's quite hard to believe that it's still the same guy…
-
@Vegard:
But his performance was nowhere near the original scene. It's quite hard to believe that it's still the same guy…
It sounded better in the movie. It was more desprate and realistic.
-
This is by no means the best job that they could have done with the source material.
This should have been a way to introduce new people to the franchise. Instead, if you aren't already an established fan, you will have no freaking idea what's going on because it just throws a bunch of garbage out with no explanation as to why it's there. For example, early in the movie, in one scene we see the crew walking around in the desert, then we switch to Crocodile doing something, and then they're suddenly riding on a huge crab? Huh? There's shit like that going on throughout the entire thing. All the freaking way through. A newbie to the series will be completely lost.
Also, as many people are complaining, many scenes were done better the first time than they were in the movie. Why would the hardcore fans want to see a straight rehash of something they've seen already (without many of the scenes they originally loved, and without any attempt to rework the plot so that it would better fit the movie format), except in lower quality? Even if they decided to forego bringing in a new audience, they could've at least made the animation look like something, oh I don't know, better than mediocre TV quality!
The production staff clearly had no idea what the hell they were doing.
-
It's the same actor for Crocodile. He just sounded kind of insane his last few lines.
I thought the movie was mediocre_._ The pace was way too fast, it almost made me feel like I was out of breath, the way they moved from one scene to another. It felt like there was no build-up or suspense. And the way they randomly skip around to things with no explanation (I don't think any of the Baroque Works' Devil Fruit powers were explained, except Bon Kurei), I can't imagine what someone who didn't see the show or read the manga would think while watching this.
It seems like Toei made the movie to show off the highlights of Arabasta with new animation/artwork, and skip as much as possible to cram it all into 1.5 hours. They could've done better than this.
-
Thank you for mentioning the DB Tenth Anniversary movie. That's an example of a good remake. In case you don't know, it covers the beginning of Dragon Ball (Goku meeting Bulma) and the Red Ribbon arc. But it does it very well.
Also, Goku has his GT gi. Why? Just to piss me off.
-
Hell the only problem with DB Tenth Anv. Special is the lack of Tao Pai Pai and Srgnt. Purple. I can understand why they wasnt there, but damn it they were the best part of the RRA saga.
Plus I would have made Col. Silver the pilot rather then Violet, for he was more prominent then her.
But it was the perfect example. There was even redesigns. White and Black being the biggest examples. Hell they even changed the wish at the end (even though I prefered the funniness of the panties) -
Instead, if you aren't already an established fan, you will have no freaking idea what's going on because it just throws a bunch of garbage out with no explanation as to why it's there.
I completely agree!
I think the best/worst example of this is in how they handled Robin.
Just watch her last scene which drops off into nothingness and provides NO resolution for the character while spoiling potential new readers and making her role seem ultimately useless.
-
Really? Because I think it would have been fantastic if they updated the villains just as well.

GOOD LORD. quit comparing it to damn dbz. PLUS, you say it was so bad, cuz they cut stuff out, but then you say you want stuff added/changed. so, when someone says that, you just immidiately say that wouldn't werk! wtf do you want?!?!?
-

Proper punctuation?
Edit: As long it made money, I don't think Toei cares one way or the other about all the crap people found wrong with it. And where the hell is that Android 17 thing from anyway Greg?
