Favorite straw hat dub voice? Personally, I think franky and brooks voices fit better than their Japanese version

Not a popular take, but I think Colleen’s Luffy is my favorite when compared with the Japanese voice actors. Tanaka’s Luffy sounds too high for me, though she has a better laugh. Besides that, I don’t think I have any strong individual preferences, outside of an overall preference for the dub.
Fingers crossed for a new set in a few hours. I don’t think I’ll be able to ration this set; too hyped.

Voyage 7 is up! https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/season-1407/8d6kgwxzng44
-
@Zephray As much as I love Franky and Patrick's portrayal, I feel like Colleen elevates all the fight scenes so I 100% agree with you.
-
I've heard a bunch of people say they refuse to watch the dub because Luffy sounds like a chain smoker. I'm fine with it personally.
-
So with these new episodes released, is the flashback complete or still going to be happening in the next set?
-
The flashback ends at the end of this set
-
@Trueblade74 He doesn’t weirdly enough unless they talking about the 4Kids version but it’s like very weird
-
What episode does Yamato make her dub appearance?
-
Episode 990 is when Yamato first speaks properly.
-
@Nitwit
It's the same criticism I've heard of Naruto's dub VA, and IMO Luffy and Naruto sound similar. -
@Trueblade74 I’m not shocked
-
I watched the new set up until the big Gol Roger scene. I’m so thankful that the Roger actor isn’t playing up the accent too much. It sounds minimally hammy, but way way better than I was expecting. Thank god.
Didn’t personally find the laughing scene as affecting as the manga or sub; I do think Oden’s actor could’ve given a better performance for the “he laughed” line. But overall I’ve been happy with Oden. He kind of speaks at one volume and carries similar line reads often, but the macho screaming fits the character well enough.
Weird that Mike doesn’t really direct anymore. He really did hand it off to Anthony and the new team.
-
I mean I don’t think it’s entirely his call. CR has just been putting him on other projects. He’s had like absences before, I’m sure he’ll direct again eventually.
-
I unfortunately can’t watch for a few hours because I am waiting for a replacement laptop charger from amazon ughhhh why this set of all sets.
-
I love these episodes so much. So excited to have them dubbed.
-
@Zephray loving them. 968 with little Pedro..... heartstrings being pulled. This dub is so great.
-
Yeah this set was great. Very well written section of the story with amazing performances all around. Was nice hearing extended Roger for the first time. I feel like I’m one of the only people who really likes his dub voice lol.
Casting wise I found it really funny how I consciously thought “Oh yeah I haven’t thought about who’d they cast as Higurashi. Seems like such a Linda Young character actually”, and then it was Linda Young.
I didn’t realize Kokoro got lines here, she had to be recast since Juli Erickson retired a few years ago. Emily confirmed It’s CJ Critt now who also voices Giolla. There’s a certain sound and energy to Julis voice that I don’t think can quite be replicated, but she gives a fitting enough performance.
Lastly the last thing I recall at least is that Scopper Gaban is very obviously Ian Sinclair? Weird choice to me. They’ve been really good about avoiding casting straw hats as other characters unless it has some specific significance or something. Especially a character like this who, while he doesn’t get a bunch of screen time, very easily could in the future he’s somewhat important.
-
Yeah, I agree that Roger is so much better than expected. He’s definitely got that cliche pirate accent (“argh, matey!”), but it’s toned down enough to not be cringe at all. It just sounds like an accent, not so theatrically cringe. Very tough job to do, so props to Anthony and the actor for getting the voice there!
-
I like Roger's voice. Perfect.

Fun cover art. Bummer no special features.
-
I see no reason we don't get monthly DVD/BD sets now. The episodes have been done for months.
-
Production demands & flooding the market, probably. They only put out a slim number of titles per month, and they don't want OP to take up a spot each month. Also, there's probably a fear that folks won't want to drop $40/month on a set, so they space them out a little for fan's pocketbooks. Especially since fans will be less likely to catch up if they fall behind.
I think there's probably a lot of psychology / market research that goes into these decisions. I'm just thankful they found a way to release the episodes faster. Though, yes, I'd much prefer bluray quality...
-
The first 3 season 13 voyages are releasing monthly tho
-
I don't expect this monthly thing for the home video release to last for long. Since they going to have slow the home video release eventually again.
-
Yeah, maybe they decided to try the monthly schedule to see how it goes. Idk. I kind of give up on figuring out this company’s logic.
-
The lack of special features really makes it hard to justify supporting the physical release. I mean I want to complete my collection, but I'm already paying for Funimation and Crunchyroll, I wish they'd give us a little something extra for the physical. I used to love listening to the episode commentaries, even if they were nonsense half the time
Side Note: Interestingly, the UK release of Collection 32 has different (and better) art than the US release
-
I almost thought this Collection skipped to Wano and had THAT EPISODE in it.
-
This post is deleted!
-
Wow I knew Funimation was dubbing Wano and now I'm catching up buying 59 Voyages at once. Only I didn't realize they've only released Whole Cake's Voyage 2. Oh well, still all new episodes for me.
-
I can't believe we've hit 1000 in the dub. (well release wise, they're probably past it now)
-
I dont like watching episodes out of order so im just go wait until this episode releases with its set
-
Sucks living in the middle of nowhere because an event like this being free is awesome however it would take two days to get there lmao
-
Are they streaming the event? “Live and in-person”?
I’ll have some fun watching if so.
The only dub premiere voice will be Sasaki.

Weird translation mistakes in this recent dub set. Pretty substantial; really frustrated with Clint’s writing here.
First, they specifically say the “locations” of the four red stones will lead you to the One Piece. This doesn’t make sense, since the four stones move around. Also, if the stone’s location revealed the OP, we wouldn’t need rubbings or translators, now would we? Obviously the rubbings give a location for each, but it isn’t the location of the stones themselves, as the translation here says. Ugh.
Second, the rando guy who yells at Roger’s execution. Here’s what he says word for word in the dub:
“Hey, pirate king! Tell us where you hid all your treasure! Is it in the Grand Line or somewhere else? You found it, didn’t you? The legendary treasure—the One Piece!”
…meaning the “One Piece” was a term used before Roger was executed? A legendary treasure that he found and then hid, and people openly knew this info? So people knew there was a treasure called “One Piece” before Roger was even a pirate? Wtf?
Let me know if I’m wrong here, but these seem like pretty huge errors in the dub, which really makes super important cannon info confusing and wrong.
-
Yes, "One Piece" was a term used before his execution. In episode 969 Oden says that after Roger became Pirate King the world began referring to his treasure as "One Piece"
-
It’s literally the same in the sub. Either way it’s non-canon as i’m pretty sure on the manga he is never shown to be asked before he said it.
Also the poneglyph thing really feels like nitpicking. “The locations” easily sounds like it could be referring to what they read. I think it’s biggest sin is probably just being a bit unclear. But that’s really made irrelevant by. The episodes surrounding its content.
-
Did we get confirmation whether or not the 3 episodes on the film red BD are dubbed or not?

I have been frustrated with Funimation (Not Clint, or even Crunchyroll) with some mistakes and miswording but other than the 4 Ponegliph (Which IS a genuine mistake) this has ALWAYS been a TOEI mistake in the Japanese version. This person mentions the One Piece by name (Wan Pisu so it was NEVER called anything else) and this is ingrained in the Japanese version since episode 50something which is LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG before Clint was hired or Crunchyroll even existed.
-
But what about the phrasing when he says, “You found it?” Doesn’t this mean the general public knows the One Piece is someone else’s treasure, not Roger’s? Like, no one knows about Joyboy, so I don’t know how they all know that One Piece was a treasure that Roger found.
If I remember when I have time, I’ll look into where they talk about the ponyglyph issue I mentioned. Would be good to pull a direct quote of the weird mistake.

Oh that's just shit tier dub writing, you were right lol.
-
They officially finally took down one piece official and it just redirects to crunchyroll lmao. Even though it still doesn’t have the dub…
-
Yes! Excellent! Then a week later, we get Film Red and those three bonus eps. I've rationed Oden piece's back half (after marathoning until "he laughed"), so great to see I can do a mini-marathon since this next set is coming out so soon.
Also! Also! Ishitani's second ep is on this set! Woot woot~! And the next set has Yamato!
-
Last set still has t gone up on Funi, maybe next week. Super excited for Voyage 8 tho!
-
Which episodes will this voyage have ?
