Dragonball Discussion Kai: Broly but this time it's not Broly
-
-
Number one at the domestic box office and already made more than its entire Japanese run.
Hopefully this will encourage them to keep trying different things.
-
Unfortunately, this will probably also encourage them to stick with 3D.
-
Decided to watch Broly's movie. As soon as I pressed "play" I remembered I could never finish Beerus movie because it was so so (SO) boring. Still decided to watch this one anyways and, boy, the difference. I didn't watch any of the old DB movies, so I don't get any of the references and homages, but this movie was pure joy (well... I would get rid of Cheelai, not a fan of the resolution coming from her simply forcing Broly out of the field instead of through his own development).
The moment that guy asked Freeza "But why only 5 centimeters?" and he gave Bulma's same answer I had to pause because I was laughing too hard. -
Cheelai was cute, though! The problem is that the Dragon Balls were used, rather than Cheelai calming Broli down herself by talking do him.
-
This is ridiculous.
-
Wow, that's neat. I don't think that it's quite as expansive as Pekindaq's collection, though, mostly because Pekindaq lives in Japan and has access to merchandise (and old displays and arcade toys from the original run). In fact, they even built a second house for their collection. I'm not sure of where they're hosting images of their collection currently, though. https://twitter.com/pekindaq

Just got out of Super Hero. I’ve seen bits of Super and the movies, enough to be caught up with the references and the like, but I think this is the first Super content I’ve seen in theaters or just in its entirety instead of clips. It was fun. Nothing in the movie though hooked me to go and catch up on Super content.
-
Watched Super Hero. It was... ok, I guess? It wasn't bad, but I was bored most of the time.
It felt to me like the movie's worth is determined by how much you craved to see Piccolo and Gohan getting some focus. Piccolo is my favorite of the good guys, so I fully approve the movie on this front. Gohan, on the other hand, I never cared about, so any extra points the movie could get for that are lost on me.
I think my main gripe is so much of the movie seemed to be relying on comedy, but the comedy was never really there (like "Bulma is the head of an alien organization that wants to conquer the world" is a joke concept that instead of actually being the basis for some jokes, leads to a very long dialogue you are supposed to find funny just because it is based on an absurd premise).
Of the new characters, Hedo was definitely my favorite.
Piccolo and Pan interactions were easily the best part of the movie, I wish that was the actual focus.Ok, I can't figure out the new spoiler tag.

If you haven't bought any of the home video releases of Dragon Ball Super yet. There are Walmart exclusive season sets out now. It's basically the 10 individual set, but now in 5 volumes. I got the first set, since I been waiting for a release like this to get Super.
Here are what episodes are on which sets.
Set 1 (Parts 1 and 2) - Episodes 1 - 26 (Battle of Gods and Resurrection F)
Set 2 (Parts 3 and 4) - Episodes 27 - 52 (The Finale of Resurrection F, Universe 6 Tournament, and the beginning portion of Goku Black)
Set 3 (Parts 5 and 6) - Episodes 53 - 78 (The rest of Goku Black and the beginning of Tournament of Power)
Set 4 (Parts 7 and 8 ) - Episodes 79 - 104 (The middle portion of the Tournament of Power)
Set 5 (Parts 9 and 10) - Episodes 105 - 131 (The end of the Tournament of Power) -
I might need to pick those up in the future. I still don't own Dragon Ball Super outside of Movie #20 and I do like of need to re-watch the series.
-
I been pretty much waiting on getting Super for awhile now myself. So I pretty much was surprise to see these new set when I went to Walmart today. Since Crunchyroll never announced that these Walmart exclusive set were coming out. and they only announced that huge steelbook complete series boxset.
Here are the links to each set on Walmart site if you want to see the covers for each set. I will I really like the cover for Set 5 (Parts 9 and 10), since it's the entire Universe 7 team. I also like the cover for set 3.

Hey, the site is finally back!
Had to make a new account (formerly just Kizuchan) because of having an old e-mail I had no access to (and notreally using Discord), but good to see APforums isn't gone just yet.
So instead of giving thoughts about One Piece I start by giving thoughts about Dragon Ball:
-The Granolah arc ended up a boring mess. I really liked everything up to Bardock's flashback and from there, Bardock was boring and all the villains were boring.
This version of Bardock undermines a bunch of what I find interesting in Goku and the Saiyans and I wouldn't even mind that if it gave something I find interesting in return but in my eyes it doesn't.
-Really liked Super Hero, but now I'm really starting to feel the repeat tropes.
Yes, technically it's revealed at the end of the movie, Gohan has been training, but it still has that annoying framing in it where, it says, hey look isn't it cool how special it is that Gohan got back into fighting the third time?
And I think I'm really, really starting to feel the transformation burn out. As recolour-y as Ultra Instinct or Super Saiyan God or even Blue might have been, they had at least some principle behind them.
I was okay with them up to Ultra Instinct, too. But then we got dark blue Vegeta and then we have green Broly again and now purple Vegeta in the manga and then add these forms in Super Hero.
I love how Gohan, Piccolo, Pan are handled in the movie and I love the Gammas and Hedo, tho.
I think the characterisation itself is fantastic. I think it's very Toriyama in the best of ways. The Gammas strike me as peak of getting the comedic vibe of Toriyama's stuff.
-
Also, that final chapter before the hiatus of Freeza just showing up, beating up everyone and leaving was fantastic because the arc was really bad before that.
-
@Kizuchan-0 Hey I can help you out with recovering your account if you have a new email address now, just shoot me a message and we'll get it sorted out.
I think I skipped Broly and I thought I was going to skip Super Hero. Now I can't remember what I read that got my interest but here we are, lol.
-
I don't understand why they haven't done anime adaptations of all his non-Dragonball works. (Or for that matter why there's been so few Dragon Quest/Chrono Trigger adaptations.) Plenty of other lesser video game RPGs get seasons all the time, how do they not do the big ones?
You'd think Cowa, Kajika, Neko Maijin, Sandland, etc. wouid all merit throwing a dozen episodes at. Can even call it Toriyama Theater if they need and just put a bunch of random stuff under an umbrella.
Jaco is the weirdest one since Dragonball Super just runs with it as established canon, including Bulma's sister, but never actually adapted it so it's just sort of... weird.
-
I kind of suspect that the Dragon Ball connection will be expanded on but as it is Sand Land was a neat comic so I'm curious to see what happens next. I wouldn't be surprised they asked Toriyama to come up with new story material and vehicle designs to sell.

The new Dragon Ball Super arc has begun and I kinda liked this first chapter. Very Dragonball / Early-Buu saga vibes with Goten and Trunks now at school. Let's see how long it can continue like this.
-
That whole situation is just odd all-around to begin with but this makes it even more so since it has Mai in a school uniform in the color page but she doesn't seem to be attending school in the actual story. So is the Pilaf Gang treated as adults in-universe or not?
I did really like how casually it reminds us that Pilaf is actually a mechanical super-genius on par with Bulma and Dr. Briefs in his own right. That's something that never really gets brought up but it's been in the series pretty much from the start.
-
The slice of life, amateur superhero story was ok, and focus on teenage Trunks and Goten is always welcome. First time in millenia that they felt like characters.
That being said, I also wanted to mention that the Trunks - Mai romance is kinda super creepy (even though so far she's not into it, so it seems like a one-way infatuation), and treating the Pilaf gang as kids makes 0 sense. Glad they're onboard and doing "good", I guess?
And also, the high school stuff / super hero side job angle is monumentally reminiscent of Gohan's adventures at the start of the Buu saga. Even some of the shots of Trunks going to school looked like Gohan's. They didn't quite add much of a spin on the formula, to be fair. And the "action scene" here was. . .uninspired.
Little pet peeve of mine, but it kinda bothers me everytime the Z Warriors fight a regular human being and have to dodge their attacks and hit them back more than once to knock them out. They're controlling their strength and everything, I know, but still. . .
The best part was the chemistry between Goten and Trunks, and I appreciate that the Dragon Ball protagonists are like a big family. Bulma's parents caring about Goku's granddaughter is kind of wholesome. At this point, that's the best part of DB Super: to see this "family" live their lives.

Any idea on when Dragon Ball Super Super Hero will be on streaming?
-
TeamFourStar does voice work on a cartoon vid.
-
Latest Super Chapter is out. So they're going to insist on making this a thing then.
-
Repeating my thoughts from last chapter.
Focus on Trunks (and, to a lesser degree, Goten) - good!
Romance with Mai - worse! (now SHE'S also horny!)
Fight choreography - not particularly good! (seriously, is Toyotaro getting worse at drawing?)
Dr. Hedo - hey, this guy's actualy kinda fun! Haven't watched Superhero yet, so maybe this isn't news to anyone who's seen the movie, but to me at least, it comes as a surprise that he's got a fun personality.Overall, this is fine, and I do want to keep reading. Weird though that it feels Hedo is getting into a pretty heated beef with Trunks but, from what I gather, the movie is basicaly a Piccolo + Gohan vehicle with Trunks, Goten, Krillin and 18 doing glorified cameos (again, according to what I've seen on the internet).

Oh the manga is covering the Super Hero movie (dragon ball super SUPER hero is a terrible name btw)? I just saw some panels of Goten and Trunks in school and thought it was something else, neat.
Romance with Mai - worse! (now SHE'S also horny!)
i dunno WHAT toriyama was thinking with this one, this pairing has been weird since I saw it in Battle of Gods. A 40+ woman gets turned into a child, even states her age (no one believes her) and then she's with trunks
then future trunks is with her, but now she's "aged back up", but then the manga revealed turning Pilaf and crew into kids was the last wish before Piccolo died in that timeline...
and like, goku and bulma don't even remember them causing trouble all those years ago -

-
I feel like a lot of this could have been easier if Mai just had a daughter.

Or Toriyama joined Nakaba in /ss/ community.

So now the manga gets to just spin its wheels for the next year just retelling what we already saw in a movie?
AGAIN?
I'm getting really tired of the manga, movies, and anime all eating each other's tails and repeating each other in a different order.
-
@Gizmo More TFS cameos!

Actualy, this is supposed to be a sort of "prequel" to the movie. At least for now.
What I don't know is if this will lead into a full blown retelling of the movie which would honestly suck big time.
-
And then if the anime ever does come back.....wouldn't it have to do the two (Granola and uh...the other guy) arcs the manga did first? It is getting a little annoying to not have everything on the same page.
then again it is VERY cathartic to finally have Trunks and Goten not stuck as little kids
Although to be frank, I've been bored with modern Dragon Ball for a long, long time.
-
The anime is going to have to do Moro and Granola... and somewhere in there it'll probably have to retell the Broly movie too which is just... ugh.
-
I'm looking forward to retelling the Broli film, I think there are some tweaks they can do to improve it (like using the Minus prologue as flashbacks instead). There's also a chance to flesh out Broli's character arc a bit.
And hopefully they'll just plain make the Moro and Granola arcs good.
-
This is huge news. Toonami will be airing the One Piece x Toriko x Dragon Ball crossover special on March 4th.

Oh wow, that's unexpected. I wonder if it'll include Toriko Episode #99 or simply be the One Piece episode?
This special never received an official release. It wasn't until One Piece was released on Prime that a proper, non-shitty broadcast copy of #590 was even made available.
Well, I guess anyone who watches will now be able to see the Shida Naotoshi scenes in higher-quality.
-
I never saw this special. So I'm excited about it. And plus we finally getting something new of the Toriko dub with this episode. Since the Toriko dub stopped at the beginning of the Melk arc and finally getting a dub voice for Zebra.
-
I don't know if there's still anyone even remotely interested in this, but anyways, new chapter is out.

Again, not bad, not great, it is what it is. Still bothered by the Trunks x Mai thingie, still bothered by how much worse the action scenes seem to be drawn, staged and choreographed, still glad we focus on teen Goten and teen Trunks and. . .Krillin too? Nice!, still glad to see this Hedo guy is kinda fun. Overall, pretty decent, nothing particularly brilliant, but going into such a monumentaly low stakes scenario for 3 chapters in a row seems quite gutsy, honestly (and some fans are definitely angry, from what I've seen on twitter).
I think knowing that nothing groundbreaking can happen cause this arc is basicaly a prologue-preparation for a movie (or for the adaptation of the movie?) makes this even less exciting, but the way everything is framed makes it seem like they (Toyotaro, Toriyama, everyone involved) 100% know this is as chill as it gets. I was getting quite numb from prolonged "strongest in the multiverse" one-upmanship slogfest going on during the Granolah arc, culminating in the hilarious Black Freezer reveal, so honestly, I'm not that bothered that for the past 3 months (!!!) we've been stuck in this slice-of-life-with-sprinkles-of-action territory, but at some point. . .maybe some meatier things can start happening?
-
I'm enjoying the current arc of the Super manga. I like that Krillin is actually getting the spotlight for a little bit in this arc besides Goten and Trunks. Also I really like Mai's outfit during the high school dance stuff.
-
@kouch_lee said in Dragonball Discussion Kai: Broly but this time it's not Broly:still bothered by how much worse the action scenes seem to be drawn, staged and choreographed,
it's really easy to tell when Toriyama does layouts and when the new guy just does it on his own. Yeah he draws the Dragonball characters fine but hes got none of the dynamics or dramatic storytelling. And his designs... eh. Like the new superhero suits are AWFUL. I guess maybe they'll get upgrades later but...
-
Toyo-tarou draws way too many lines on his characters, which just winds up making the costumes looking weird and ugly because there are just random details there for the sake of it.
-
BTW, apparently it was well known that this was just going to be a 3 chapter prequel mini-arc.
And next, apparently. . .is indeed the adaptation of the Super Hero movie. I think?
-
Has anyone watched the newest movie?
-
It’s been a while since I saw the movie, but I do have fond memories of it. I do wonder how the manga will adapt the story, as it seems to head into a similar story line.
-

I’d be fine with the retelling of Broly superfluous as it is the other two.
I’d rather have someone put a bullet in my damn head.
-
So apparently we’re supposedly getting a new Budokai Tenkaichi game.
Origins 3 was right there yes you did shut down Game Republic but still.
