Please enjoy this trip down memory lane. It’s not the Nakama thread but an Impel Down escape topic. On December 30th, 2008 at the bottom of page 5 the first proposal of Jimbei as a crew mate formed within our world. Naturally no one was on bored but when you look at Brennen’s reasoning coupled with almost everyone else’s immediate dismissal you can just see he was on a different level with dissecting the series. At least in this regard.
Oh and keep in mind this was before they got to see what Jimbei even looks like.

The first time I thought Jimbei might be a Straw Hat was Luffy's face when he summoned Whale Sharks at the end of Impel Down. It wasn't a sure thing, but I've been on board with him joining for a long time. I was convinced long before the Fishman Island arc.

Jinbe is now officially the most boring Straw Hat and Carrot isn't joining she was just there because she was on the Sanji team and was then excluded from the group bonding immediately after.

I think you are misunderstanding her character trait from the actual bond. Her being "clingy" has always been a point ever since her introduction.

The panel where she is with the group seems more about her consistent character "garchuing" rather than something that is meant to be taken as a deep-bond.

Otherwise, she would've been with the crew the entire chapter. In reality, she only appeared in the first panel and then disappeared. Look at the panel where Luffy is talking about partying after beating up those guards. That would've been a good moment to have Carrot there IF he was going for the strong-bonding thing.

Considering she's been around for over 170 chapters and there's no longer any point in "hiding that's she's the next one", that's very true, she should have been put along with the others fighting the Beast Pirates at least.

Seems like a rather big thing thats being ignored in favor pretending that Oda was totally conveying that she's is a potential crewmate.

Well what else do you expect? Oda cramming Carrot into every scene with the Straw Hats doing every action to fit in as a crew member, to the point where she is already a crew member in all but name? That would be a little too on-the-nose wouldn't you think.

What Oda is doing right now is the same ambiguous arms-length attention that he gives other characters. It's not a means of dismissal by any means, unless you want Oda to draw her into scenes and interactions that make her undeniable as a Straw Hat crewmember. I think the teases we have here (which can be interpret however you like) are great the way they are, because it gives people something to think about. Kinda like with what we had with Monet being dead or not, it's all left up to interpretation until he actually confirms it.

I'm honestly enjoying Oda's use of Schroedinger's Carrot.

Giving her no interactions with Luffy at all in the entire arc of Wano, I can totally see it.

This is a thread where a SWORD member who is infiltrating a Yonkou with his own group and never interacted with Luffy will join, but Carrot has no chance at all

We could also say that every Straw Hat sans Jinbe has been added to the crew within the arc the were introduced in. Jinbe was the first real case where he was introduced, and was not invited or joined the crew until many many arcs later. My point is that we're in new territory here with what Oda is deciding for the next crewmate(s). I would say that is why there is so much mystery, why there are so many hints and red herrings, and why everything is being stretched out.

Honestly, we don't have a reason why the 9th member should take longer than an arc to join the crew either.

Sulong is called the Mink's 'true form' and the Minks were one of the races entrusted with a Road Poneglyph. They have a prophecy of the coming 'New Dawn', similar to the prophecy of a future promised day held by the Fishmen and Kozuki, two of the other bearers of Road Poneglyphs. The moon is perhaps the most important recurring symbol in One Piece. I'd wager there's a reason that Minks can only use their 'true form' during the full moon and that perhaps there will be some plot development in the future which will expand access to this ability. I feel like this is an unnatural restriction due to the present state of the One Piece world which will be corrected in the future when the promised day arrives.

I'm pretty sure the One Piece world has 1 moon. The model at Ohara is an old fashioned, real world, geocentric model of the solar system with Earth at it's center.

But should we ever get full confirmation that there are multiple moons I'd be cool. Only thing is Oda has made it very clear that his phases of the moon pass exactly as they do in the real world.

I can see Carrot becoming a member of the wider Straw Hat crew (allies like Vivi etc), but I don't think she will be part of the Sunny crew…

Luffy now has the ten members he wanted. Carrot doesn't have the strawhat level of backstory, at least yet. Oh and what would Carrots specialty be? There is also already one animal on board....

Every new member detracts focus from each member, which means less space for character development and shenanigans from the characters we're familiar with.

Why have the jinks problems going Sulong and wait for exact days if we have 6 moons?

Besides the Ohara model we never got an implication of having more than one

I think the the thing we have in Ohara is just a "wrong" idea of the earth being the center of the solar system and instead this are other planets or something like we had in real life as well

Every day I'm more and more curious about that symbol Drake wears all the time, I mean it could be representing SWORD, but an admiral like Kizaru would have recognized it right?
It feels similar to Law's jolly roger in the sense of being influenced by his previous idol(Doula Mongo). and his benefactor Rocinante, and both Drake and Law wear their jolly rogers all the time, and I been wondering how Drake didnt become delusional with the Marines after witnessing how Barrels turned out at the end.

I feel like there's another person in Drake's past that kept him believing in the Marines, and inspired him into infiltrating the Beast Pirates, seeking revenge maybe?
He never gave a shit that Doula Mongo killed his father, but he's all interested in targeting Kaido, and I would buy it if it was for justice only, but there could be something personal going on here.

His story arc just seems the most interesting of the Worst Gens present in Wano the more I think of it. And his presence in Wano have been equal to Law and Kidd, which are Luffy's competitors, and he's being played with greater relevance than the likes of Hawkins and Apoo.

We're about to keep learning more stuff from him, and I'll pay specific attention to the moment he finally meets with Luffy.

Whaa… why? She didn't need a full moon to fight the SHs when they first arrived on Zou. It would only her ultimate attack that had to wait for full moon for.

So Jinbe, Nami and Robin can go multiple arcs w/o officially joining, but Carrot has to join now? Also, the reliance on the Moon to go Sulong is all that matters? She can't grown on her own like other crew members? The logic here isn't sound. Oda does a whole bit where Nami, Usopp and Chopper stay back from fighting, even tho we all know they can take out some of those same guys, but there is this expectation of every new member having Sanji, Zoro and Luffy level of ease when fighting.

Robin appeared some time before Little Garden, I might be wrong here. She got on the ship b4 Jaya arc. That's at least 7 arcs between appearance and officially joining and at least 4 arcs on the ship before officially joining.

Nami appeared in 3 arcs and joined officially in the 4th arc.

Jinbei was in even more arcs than the other 2, yet Carrot has to join now or never? This is her 3rd arc appearance and nakama limitations are being made up that don't apply to other members. I wonder why. Especially when Jinbe got treatment that can be applied to no one. No SH member is treated the same in narrative. I can't say Chopper and Zoro was dealt the same before joining. I would love to come back to this logic if another crew member doesn't join within the first 3 arcs that they appear in when Jinbei and at least 2 others don't fit that logic at all.

The way I see it, the SHs will most likely be saying goodbye to the Minks and samurai after this battle. That will be the time Carrot needs to decide where she's going. Jinbe could always travel quickly and easily across vast stretches of ocean, so even when he kept putting it off, there was no doubt he could catch up later. Carrot doesn't have that ability, and there's no real reason why she would have to wait. Her only obligation is to Zou, so if she can say goodbye to them, there's no reason she can't join right as they separate.

That sparks some questions.

First, the fact that all minks turn white during sulong makes them quite boring and hard to distinguish from one another, they're way more original in their non-true form.
That said, I gotta ask, where are all the other 5 moons currently not present in the world?? if they're elsewhere, wouldn't be better to have an astronomer to find them? if they have been destroyed, how are they getting them back?

Carrot wants to see the world. She stowed away on the Sunny for that very reason. Why would she just go back to Zou now? She specifically comments on the rumored existence of Giants, so why would she not want to go with the Straw Hats to visit Elbaf?

The idea that she'll see the world by proclaiming herself captain of a Mink crew when she's outranked by many other senior members and join Luffy's fleet which has no presence in Wano and of which she has no awareness, seems very unlikely to me.

The 'fleet' idea is the least likely outcome I think. It's all or nothing.

Pretty much this, besides putting Carrot as a tag-along in the Sunny in their voyage to the next island makes no sense, if she goes to say Elbaf, she's doing it as a Strawhat, there's no reason why she wouldn't ask Luffy to let her join at the end of Wano.

If i'm not mistaken, Pedro left Zou for the PG and found his way to Totland.

Neko and Inu wanted to adventure/find Wano and found their way to Wano

If Carrot wanted to go out and find the crew, I doubt it would be impossible. We have multiple cases of the Minks leaving their home and obligations for adventure or their own agenda. Carrot told no one, after 2 Jack attacks, of her leaving and Wanda was ok w/ it. In all of these cases, it was half selfish and also out of obligation.

Again, where are the limitations coming from?

Also, I can't name a 1 dimensional SH member. Everyone has multiple ways to fight. Carrot depending on Sulong all of the time makes no sense. She went most of the WCI arc without it.

Carrot, and everyone else in the world know about the fleet because of Big News Morgans.

Carrot can decide where to go if she is a captain.

Other Minks outranking her means nothing. It is their character traits. While Wanda and others may be Carrot's seniors they lack the initiative Carrot has displayed. They asked for permission to go to Whole Cake Island instead of disobeying orders. That's why Carrot fits better to lead them. Like Luffy, whom has very few leadership traits (ones you would actually expect from a captain of the ship - knowledgeable, strategic, etc), Carrot lacking these is why the other Minks would join her to complement what she lacks.

The beautiful thing about the fleet is its non-existence. That way, other captains can become followers without Luffy having to command them. I find it highly unlikely that after this war a Samurai/Mink pirate crew is not formed. A small group within the entire two countries (read thousands) that want to specifically help in the pirates king's quest. It is what Oden wanted by liberating Wano in the first place, to help Joy Boy's will carrier. Carrot will prove to be the best choice to lead this small faction. Pair that up with her helping obtaining some of the missing poneglyphs, meet back at Elbaf. She gets to explore the world by trying to find these missing stones. She is directly helping into bringing the new dawn. She has a crew.

Maybe Chopper can make a modified Rumble Ball to work on Minks, or even crazier, she gets a Fruit power. I think it's too far now to add Fruit powers to any of the existing crew, it'd be better to give it to a new crewmember, whether Carrot or not.

Unless that power gets awakened through an alternative means, like Chopper being able to control Monster Point or Luffy learning his new Haki techniques mid-fight/arc.

Sulong isn't something that's necessary for any Mink to join the crew, and we don't know the extent of control Minks have over it other than being activated by the Moon. We know it's their 'True Form', but what does this even mean? Heck, only recently we only found out Fruit Powers can be awakened too, and we haven't seen any actual fruit power awakening since that moment we learned about it. There's no logic behind it that says this form couldn't be 'unlocked' through some other means. We know relatively little about Minks, for good reason.

We're talking about reasoning for things are aren't bound by any logic, like Fruit powers having an Awakening or Swords with the ability to draw Haki/Life Force from its users. Even the Rumble Ball remains unexplained how it actually works. There's plenty of ~~asspulls~~ macguffins in One Piece.

Based on the logic in here, going for if any new member joins, they have to

there shouldn't be room for improvement because the series is almost over. They are 1 dimensional and rely on 1 ability if that is their strongest
they only have 3 arcs to join from their first time being with Luffy or just their appearance or thats it

Now lets see if any of this checks off for Drake and Tama…

I like the character and his design but it’s way to early to be rooting for him to be the next Nakama

Edit: The only thing he has on the other contenders is a cool design and most likely he has a sad backstory

For me, it's not about rooting for someone. It's about seeing the actual choices made by Oda. If Drake was seen without his crew and interacting with any of the SH members, I would question that, but even that isn't enough. He isn't even comparable to Kiku and Raizo and they have been shown to be lower tier in possibly being nakama.

There's
1 - Kiku, Raizo off instinct and no solid proof
2 - Pekoms is off instinct, but also has a narrative of possibly not being w/ BM's crew anymore. There is Pedro's Guardian slot open tho, so he may go back with them
3 - Tama, Momo is weird because they're so young, but Luffy hasn't shown discrimination outside of keeping himself from leaving until a specific age
4 - Carrot hasn't clearly verbalized a dream, which is the most important. Yet, her narrative has left a lot to question

I can't fit Drake because there's literally nothing for me to question. Apropos, Caribou has more to question than Drake and I couldn't force him into any of these 4 tiers

He hasn't interacted with any Strawhat at all, being that one time he faced with O-soba mask, whom he wouldn't know it was Kuroashi Sanji, the closest he have been to one of them. and he's not shown looking at Nami and Robin.

For me, I'm against rationalizing how a character is not going to join the crew, based on whatever reasoning.

I think you can formulate a theory for a character to possibly join the crew, no matter how wacky the premise. I don't think you can do the same to work against any character though, since we're shown how unpredictable the story is, and how our perceptions can change on a dime given how well Oda can craft a story. We went from seeing Robin as a typical over-powered villain into becoming a crewmember just because she willed it. We had Vivi introduced as a bad guy, turned 180 as a good guy, and despite sharing many moments with the Straw Hats, undertandably not join the crew.

Even looking at Brennen's original post, all he did was pose a possibility, without any real evidence to support the idea. Even the story wasn't formed around having Jinbe joining the crew, rather it's a matter of events and oppurtunities that lead to it eventually happening. The reality is that it's just as plausible that Jinbe doesn't join the crew and is regulated as an Ally. The possibility of him joining the crew isn't mutually exclusive to any other possible outcome. That's pretty much why I don't understand why there's any need to dismiss or downplay any character being a potential strawhat on any basis at all. It happens when and if it happens.

No, but I personally believe that its the fruit itself that is going to join instead of a whole person with a fruit.
and Kuma's biologically dead, I wouldn't doubt a bit Vegapunk extracted his devil fruit at some point. specially since we haven't seen Kuma using it since the time skip.

Their concepts have definitely been in Oda's head for a while already, its their designs that supposedly came up on the run, but that's funny since each of the Worst Gens have a much better detailed design than Carrot will ever have.

Dude what??, his name is literally Diez Drake, Diez is ten in Spanish, he uses it as X(roman numeral for 10) for reasons we don't know yet, but one good reason of why I think he uses it like that, it would be that he doesn't want people to recognize him as Diez Barrel´s son. since you know, Barrels is a shame to The Marines and stuff.
And his name "Drake" comes from Sir Francis Drake, literally the second person in history to have circumnavigated the world, just Like how Luffy is going to be the second person to ever reach Laugh Tale.
