tbh, wild animals should be banned from the Chinese wet market. It's not just a matter of cultural difference

Didn't they pulled that shit during SARS and then go full force unbanning it again after it died down?
I'm Chinese outside of China and a Singaporean I say with all my heart that I hate the China government.
Go do some investigative research back to 2019 November to December and you'll realise this entire situation could be avoided if assholes weren't being assholes.
Not to encourage racism but I'm saying accountability needs to be a thing.Edit;strong language unnecessary

Wet markets should be banned period.
-
Yeah there definitely needs to be some form of permanent strict regulations on those markets especially when the entire globe is feeling consequences from their choices in food. The virus is rumored to have possibly come from pangolins which have been hunted to near extinction.
-
This isn't about the asian people, this is about goverments and governants that can't face consequences from their actions.
Whenever you see chairman Poh praising doctors, remember the one that got incarcerated and died when he tried to raise the alarm last year. Whenever you see "China donating x millions on medical test and equipment", be aware that the wet markets will reopen once the scare dies down again.
And people are taking action because this is a short timespawn crisis of a few months. And it is an oportunity with all the smog disipating from the skies, the medical systems being scrutinized closer than ever, a terrible impact for the economy is a chance to rebuild it, jobs that aren't presential required can be more work from home, even remote education, if it's good enoug to learn a crafts online, it is good enoug to teach part of the curriculum.
And that's for the ones in power, regular folks have things to learn as well, the importance of basic hygiene, how fragile is current society, the dangers of the current climate of missinformation and untrustworthy leaders, the importance of building communities with the people that live next door, and the necesity of at least a secondary job that can be done from home or a craft that can be useful if society suddenly changes.

I don't even understand why anyone would want to eat weird-ass animals like fruit bats. Is there not enough beef/pork/chicken in China?
-
According to that video, is not the common population, but the elite who eats the weird stuff. The issue is not in the consumption of the animals themselves, but the storage of them in the wet markets in a way that makes the contamination that produced these virus a possibility.
If this was a hunt that just got to some millionaires family, it would have been easier to contain than starting from a public market.
-
@Johnny:

Its the same reason for why people eat fermented fish. People enjoy experiencing rare and unusual food dishes and people who are into that will always find a way to get their hands on em. There is always a lucrative black market for rare food items y'know.
-
It started as a measure to help the starving masses Mao let, but gradually became a business for the elites. Another part is the bogus medical part that came to reuse the part otherwise unused, so we have dust of tiger bone curing diseases and rhino's horn curing impotence.
-
God, knowing this was all because of some assholes' bad decisions, makes me, a teetotaler, want to drink.
-
@Johnny:

Superstition.
People eat gold coin turtles and rhino horns because they believe they bring luck.
Edit: NYC is likely getting a shelter in place order within 48 hours.

So I've been thinking… Do you guys think it's okay to take a walk in a forested area alone? I mean in terms of the pandemic and all. I'm wondering because it would be good to have some fresh air, and since I won't really be interacting with people, I guess it's on the safer side. I live on the outskirts of city if that's of any help.
I also want to go skateboarding (alone).
-
As long as there aren't a bunch of other people in the forest, and you don't go rolling in the mud or something, I think it should be fine.

Well, it should be fine, I think. Just keep six feet of any people if you do see them, and when you get home, I would recommend to take a bath/shower as a premeasure. Hope that helps.

There shouldn't be people there. Unless there's a race or marathon, but I doubt it.
Ah, a bath is something I've been planning for a long time~

Chrissie and me attempted to go to the beach, and then the woods, and then a semi-historical park thing.
All just the other day, and all of them were packed with presumably bored people, so we didn't get out of the car in any of the cases. The funny/morbid thing was the vast majority of the people out and crowding around were older people. Because of course.

One thing we want to do is go down to Manhattan and drive around. Like... a once in a lifetime chance to just cruise around Man-fucking-hattan because so few cars are on the road.
I dunno if it's actually as dead as google maps traffic indicates but man that would be surreal as shit.It goes without saying but we would not be exiting the vehicle.

God. Italy is fucked beyond belief.
Soon gonna get +400 deaths every day and make China look like a best case scenario.

Yes. In fact, the Chinese government is already trying to disassociate their blame by referring to this as an Italian/Iranian virus internally.
Of course, this is futile outside China as the rest of the world already considers this their fuckup.

I’m a teacher in Kansas and they just cancelled school for the remainder of the year. Now I have to figure out how to rural 7th graders online.

Oh, okay. I guess not many people enjoy nature and woods in that area, or just everyone is staying at home. >-<
At least it be quiet! Hope you have fun!

Stephen King wants people to stop comparing the coronavirus to his postapocalyptic novel 'The Stand':

It's hard not to compare things, I guess we just shouldn't write articles going into detail about it or shout it around him to be respectful.

same, i had bought a book on influence on the plague (in 1350) on belgium and european society after. Pretty interesting read

I live in Manhattan, every time I look out the window I see a rough and moderate amount of traffic still. Far from a ghost town. It would be a fun experiment though. Sadly, I sold my car a few months back. But hey, I don't have to risk catching the virus trying to adhere to alternate side parking.
Some guy apparently was licking subway poles and chasing after people shouting that he had/was the virus
A man was robbed of his groceries not too far from me by 3 men with machetes. Inevitable, but didn't expect it to get to that level so quickly. At least not for another week.
As for wet markets, they should definitely go away, but if they don't and I fully expect they won't– they need to stop stacking the cages so that the animal on top doesn't continually drop waste on the animals beneath them. That'll stop a curve a bit.
-
I guess the definition of wet market is that the animals are alive, yes? (Checks up)
You gringos, of these are everywhere, is just a community market, the issue is the live animals, but all around latam and here in spain there are these kind of markets with refrigerated meat and fish and well, I can’t say it hasn’t ever been any disease, but if you kill the animal, then you have to eat it to get infected, and then it is not an airborne disease.
Btw: Spanish flu, not actually from Spain, Spain was hit the hardest, but there were reports of the disease before it hit here.

Target is supposedly closing at 9pm now.
Meanwhile my state of NJ has instituted a curfew of 8pm.
I have no idea how that's going to work with my closing shift on Friday so I'll have to figure it out when I go in tomorrow.
-

Why is there even a curfew? :wassat:

@Stranger:

Think the rationale behind the curfews is to minimize the amount of time people are in contact with others thereby lowering the window of time the virus has to be transmitted. Its about doing as much as you can to limit transmission without going full blown forced mandate stay in your homes style quarantine.
-

Oh, I see now. That makes sense. I'm just worried about the worst possible scenario. Yay for depression >~<

True. I was not doing any of that lol

Or maybe don't get angry because people are comparing a book you wrote about an apocalyptic pandemic, to the situation of a non apocalyptic pandemic. You're a horror writer you should understand that when people panic they started to see causation and correlation in things that are neither.
-
Now that I’m thinking about it, I’m combining this in my mind the produce market with the meat market. Can’t argue against higher standards for animal products. Leave veggies as it is.

Hey look. Italy with nearly 500 hundred deaths in a single day.

There has been a research: https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanres/article/PIIS2213-2600(20)30116-8/fulltext
It's simply the the pool of analysis is too shallow for real statistics base and it focus on patients of the high risk group. -
i have a feeling Florida is about to explode. 100 new cases overnight, and i saw pics of people partying on the beach just 2 days ago. Lots of old people there too, wouldn't be surprised if they end up hit the hardest

Either China lied about their numbers or the same could happen anywhere else if people dont take it seriously. These are war numbers and when the death toll stops the real problems will begin.
Could lead to unthinkable consequences for the EU and will shake several nations in profound ways for a couple of decades minimum.

My karate dojo had decided to stay open for training for those who understood the risks and were still willing to come, which was nice because it was at least a way to get some exercise and try to stay healthy after sitting at home all day the rest of the time. Unfortunately, an executive order from the governor has now required all health clubs and similar businesses to close down at least until April 10, so…guess I'm going to be going for a lot of walks instead.
-

I… I can' even... how does their logic even work!? This is not like "I understand if I consume this substance I am considerably increasing my chances of developing a certain kind of cancer and I am still willing to consume it", a case where your actions will only affect your own health so if you want to fuck it, well, it's your right. This is a collective problem - and as "collective" as it is possible in the current age -, one can't claim to be willing to take the risk as if their actions only affect themselves and just solve it by checking a "I've read and agree with the terms and conditions" box.
It really baffles me how symptomatic it is. How we became so individualistic it doesn't even seem to cross people's mind the problem of someone getting infected by the virus is not a problem because they can get sick, but because they become a risk to others by adding to this contagious net where every new infected person becomes a multiplying agent.
-
A sobering article about how social distancing will change our society, in some ways forever:
https://www.technologyreview.com/s/615370/coronavirus-pandemic-social-distancing-18-months/?fbclid=IwAR3EkKl911jLvg0P9ZPrt3WJU0pRlAT4Kn8cxXxL0ZzWHsWDRH76feZezJsAck, it's like we're heading into a new Dark Ages.

I feel like we will probably have a vaccine in a month or two, the question is how long till we can get it distributed to the general public
-
I feel like it will be longer than that, but it is the question of how long it takes to MAKE as opposed to how long it will take to be USED.

Well, we live in a society that doesn't care about the individual nearly as much as it should, and a government that accordingly fails to take action. The motto of middle and upper class Americans is overall "who cares, I got mine", especially among people over 60.
Except when they have to pretend to care about minorities because racism produces social barriers to success.I feel like we will probably have a vaccine in a month or two, the question is how long till we can get it distributed to the general public
Not before 2021 unfortunately.
-

Estimate from phase I (not toxic to humans) which one possible vaccine just entered, to being able to be administered to the population = 18 months

You know, I'm trying my best at this social distancing thing. I hardly get out of the house, I stocked up on essentials, don't use public transport since last week…
And there are elderly people going about their business as usual, saying "You have to die of something anyway". In certain cases where there's no one to help them (even though the local governments promised to offer assistance to those in need) I understand not having a choice. My friend's father acts this way, even if my friend's right there to take care of grocery shopping and walking the dog. My stepfather's still working and commuting by public transportation, and going about his usual business shopping here and there. And then he of course visits me. It's not me I'm worried about though, I'm healthy and young, but it seems the people most at risk give the least damn about this pandemic. I mean, both my friend's father and my stepfather have serious preexisting medical problems (both had heart-attacks for example), and they don't even care.
I feel kind of cheated, trying to make sacrifices where I can to make this whole things less bad, as humanly as possible, and some people just straight up playing Russian roulette with a deadly virus. I will continue making these sacrifices despite all this, but I'm still pissed.
Pissed and anxious and afraid and sad and uncertain, as I'm sure most of us are around the world these days. I'm finding myself searching for those little moments of solace, when this pandemic isn't at the forefront of my mind. I guess everyone of us could do with pausing a little and appreciating the tiniest pockets of joys in life. Cracking jokes with friends over the internet, trying to sit in your chair while your cat occupies two thirds of it (I swear to God, my cat's gonna save my sanity in these coming months), finding a funny picture and so on.
