If so, congrats to them, Really enjoyed their scene(although it was noticeably corrected, I think the timing was still very nice). Considering how they did some interesting breakdowns for the animation in episodes like 797, I think its great they had the opportunity to make a contribution to the franchise.

yo thank you! It was big for me as well! my part was indeed very heavily corrected lol, i wish nuki wouldve went a lil easier on it, i think alot of the motion and poses were lost, as well as some effects, impact frames, hair movements etc..
my breakdowns were super misinformed, i honestly said alot of arrogant and downright wrong stuff so its kinda embarassing to look at lol..

Unpopular opinion but Shida's cuts are really really jarring and feel out of place, plus all his work is very samey….
Since Toei was aiming for momentum with the one-shot, i think they made the best dexision with Shida. If they aimed for a 1:1 adaptation, which i assume would be appreciated even more by most fans (me included), Ishizuka would have been the best choice. With his extremely fast timing and excessive use of visceral line art and impact frames, i'm sure he would have executed the scene perfectly

No one was expecting him to return so soon. He's definitely not becoming a long term regular, that's for sure. Random directors coming and staying temporarily on the show before they leave has also happened in the past. It's not something that uncommon.
Tu Yong-ce will most likely not be on that episode my guy.

I wouldn't say quit because he could still come back, he just moved to a different series
Ueda might have retired but I guess we'll see if he's working on Dai no Daibouken or not.
Last time I heard from Ueda was on an episode of Kitaro.
I don't think Ueda's gonna return on the series, he's been on the One Piece anime continously for 20 years now and he could likely have had enough of the series. Back in the days of DBZ and early OP he's been among the best directors at Toei, however he's had a pretty rough decline since mid-Dressrosa.
I haven't seen Ueda's Kitaro episode but from what I've heard it was pretty damn good, which leads me to speculate that an eventual franchise fatigue could have been a contributing factor in his decline on the show and might be unwilling to come back on One Piece because of this.
The co-series director Kouhei Kureta has stated that they're aiming to get youth on the series (paraphrased) and Ueda is as senior as it gets. That's why I believe that he's done with the One Piece anime.
It bears repeating that this is just my opinion on the matter and therefore shouldn't be taken as factual information.

Nah he's just as hit or miss on Kitaro, stop using any chance you can to push this narrative that there's something wrong with the One Piece anime's production.
He's simply not good anymore, his second Kitaro episode was awful
Well if that's the case then forget about the franchise fatigue thing I said then. He overall just declined then.
The Ueda situation is not uncommon. Tadayoshi Yamamuro, another big figure from the DBZ era, was at the top of the game back then, but has regressed a lot and nowadays he's a far cry from what he used to be during his prime. Same applies to Ueda, he's past his prime and is now only just a mere shadow of his brilliant former self. It's very unfortunate to see such great figures from the past wither so drastically.

Well, she's only partially storyboarding the episode so she's not gonna have a big influence on the episode. When you look at an episode where Komaki only storyboards and is directed by someone else (e.g. episode 900) and at episodes where she both storyboards and directs (episode 909) the difference can be considerable. And here she just contributes one fraction of the board, dunno to what extent though. Shimaya's skills as an episode director are also too early to call.

I swear the moment i saw Komaki i automatically dismissed everything else in the credit. So its the same situation as the Mihawk-Blackbeard episode (though i think in that episode she was the only one involved with the SB). How does the SB handling work in these cases. Does each of them SB a half of the episode exactly or does the more seasoned one SB the key parts while the newbie handles the less challenging parts (e.g exposition scenes)? Or is it just a case of a rough schedule and one of them randomly handles whatever part remains untouched?
Anyway, im almost certain that Komaki was involved with at least the main moment of the episode

Well here's the thing, there's no set in stone method about how the storyboard's gonna be divided among the 2 ED's. Any of the possibilities you suggested are plausible, we can only speculate.

The episode reached the key animation process at least aroundthe month of January and the episode has been already finished. Shimaya is still very new to the episode director role and new ED's always start with directing off the storyboards of other ED's for as long as they become proficient enough to start boarding themselves. So all of the split SB/ED episodes you see are completely normal, considering most of these ED's are new to this position or don't yet have enough experience (Shimaya).

I don't have to worry about bits of jarring imbalances for this episode. Everything is gonna look good, polished and consistent. Out of all of the old supervisors, Yokoyama's been the most consistent one art-wise.

We also know that episode 925 is the Sanji raid suit episode and on action episodes, the quality of the animation hinges for the most part on the key animators who're gonna work on it, so the supervisors don't matter all that much. Yokoyama would not drag this episode down at all, unlike weak supervisors where the KA's are infinitely better than them and it's jarring when it shifts in between them. In episode 915 for example, you had certain awful Shingaki scenes spliced in between gorgeous animation sequences and it stood out like a sore thumb. That's not gonna happen with Yokoyama, as he's very competent.
! When it comes to the new ED, Nanami Michibata, because she has been praised by Tu Yong-ce on twitter and she's been entrusted with such a big episode for her debut as an episode director, I do believe that definitely says something about her talent. Episode 925 is definitely in good hands.

Oh i dont understimate Yokoyama. Thats why i said he's a beast. I mean he's what, in his 70s? and he's still supervising episodes…thats insane. His art is very consistent yes.

No he definitely isn't, especially after his workload here on 924

The problem I think is mainly that they don't want to bring the voice actors together to record. A number of episodes were already finished animation-wise, and just needed voices recorded. I think that's what I read.
If the animation can be worked on safely, and future episode planning can continue, I wonder if that could result in a long streak of episodes where they were able to take their time planning storyboards and animating it, and we could get a COVID-era streak of really solid episodes with no rushing once the anime returns?

I assume a lot of staff are still working to make future episodes more polished. Maybe we'll see another Nagamine episode sooner than expected and maybe we'll see big name guest animators participate more frequently. Plus, the manga is still happening and the distance with the anime is increasing slowly but effectively. If lets say the manga releases 10 chapters before the anime returns, that would fantastic, assuming Toei takes advantage of it. I'd be very disappointed if they stick with the same pacing for EVERY wano episode. I doubt it would hurt to give 1 or 2 episodes out of 20 a 1,5-2 chapter pacing
Well Fuji TV pushed both Millionare Detective and the next season of The Promised Neverland (aka the Noitamina timeslot) each back a season to where the former's currently scheduled to return in June-ish I think? Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS gave a hard figure of five weeks so I'm expecting One Piece's hiatus to last at least around that long. The situation's constantly evolving though, and Oda mentions in his recent message that stuff's being figured out behind the scenes. Even if the broadcasts are still delayed perhaps the voice actors can record remotely like what happens in some western dubs for example? We'll see.
I'd actually prefer just a solid hiatus block instead of a situation like poor Railgun T is currently suffering where it keeps randomly going on and off the air due to coronavirus-related production headaches even before the rest of the industry started falling suit.

Thank you for posting the video. It was very well put together and very eye-opening. I think nowadays as a community we're at a better place when it comes to understanding the general limitations of anime production because of more frequent social media discussions, the rising popularity of the sakuga community and content creators like the members of Sakugabooru/Sakugablog or youtubers like AnimeAjay, Totally not mark and others, spreading awareness and sharing their knowledge. Even if there are people who still post jokes about funny looking frames, they are very likely to be corrected by someone else as a result of the aforementioned developments. So i think there's still a long road ahead of us but its not as bad as it used to be, at least from my perspective (im not that involved in social media and dont easily engage in those types of discussions but i assume someone who does engage more would have a better picture of how much unawareness is present in the community)

Are there any of the old ones still around?
Absolutely. Going off of my old chart, Hisada, Yokoyama, Takagi, Shimanuki, Shuuichi Ito, Shingaki, Kitazaki, Hirotaka Ito, and Eisaku Inoue (almost always partnered w. Hito) are still regulars/semi-regulars while Midori Matsuda now usually does chief animation director work alongside Ichikawa. Takara left the show a little bit into Whole Cake Island (though he did work on Stampede) and Deguchi while still around hasn't done as much AD work as he used to lately it feels. The hiatus might be affecting my perception here.
Studio GUTS hasn't been as active as they've been in the past since I think they've only handled two episodes of Wano so far with a third coming up soon once the anime resumes. Of the new and newer crop of active ADs I'd say that Kitazaki and HIto are the ones who really excel but almost everyone has been turning in some pretty good episodes lately thanks to the stronger directorial oversight. My hope is that Keita Saito becomes a regular - he debuted on episode 920 and had some incredibly crisp artwork.

Yeah, many of the old ones are still around.
Kazuya Hisada, Masahiro Shimanuki, Shuichi Ito, Eisaku Inoue, Kenji Yokoyama, Masahiro Kitazaki, Shingefumi Shingaki, Masayuki Takagi and Toshio Deguchi are all old animation directors that have consistently stuck with the series(for the most part), and are still on the show.
Next week is break for the manga, this new episode will come in a good hour.
