Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)

Another thing is that Funimation has released multiple DVDs for the series. If sales were low to begin with then why did they go to the trouble to dub 574 episodes, three movies, and the TV Specials? Normally when Funimation cancels a dub they usually do it after they release two or three seasons (i.e. Toriko, Sergeant Frog, and Shin-chan). Also it seems odd that they would cancel series after hyping it's 30th anniversary and starting a new podcast centered around said series.

FUNi still seems to be pushing the anime's 20th anniversary so I don't know if they would care to for an anime that they weren't dubbing anymore since they're primarily a dubbing company but shrugs. I'd say I care but honestly, the silence from both parties for a year now has gotten extremely old and is an extreme disservice to the fans who have been asking for more and more One Piece, especially when they reassured fans that they were working on getting more. I hope Stampede gets released in North America through Toei themselves but this whole thing has been a huge disaster and has only served to kill my interest in the dub. I guess the sudden release of specials that they've had dubbed for years should have been a sign, though I pray that a return in the fall is still what we're looking towards and not a drop of the dub altogether
-
There's lots of things that probably contributed– high episode count, decline in quality over time, and the dub being so far behind are probably the reason. One bad arc isn't going to be what made Funimation cancel the show. This has probably been going on for some time now, and it must have been a really hard decision to pull the plug.
Still though! 574 episodes is a major feat and we're lucky we got as much as we did. Funimation tried, they really did. The show as it is now is only really appropriate for Japanese TV and streaming in the west. That's just the consequence of the way we consume media evolving so rapidly.

Honestly, it's hard for most people to stomach the anime in its original form beyond Enies Lobby.
Toei needs to start producing Kai versions of the post-timeskip arcs ASAP.
Yeah, this. To me the show has always been hard to watch after that. Once it got to Marineford I considered the show to be pretty much unwatchable.
Toei treats One Piece with a quantity over quality philosophy and it shows the farther you go in. If Funimation stops dubbing the show and chooses to go the Detective Conan route and just do movies (and specials) I would be fine with that.
-
You guys are still lucky. One Piece has pretty much dubbed everything GOOD AND OUTSTANDING already. Latin America seems like its going to just dub the specials and then dub the latest episodes…which sounds great until you realize the latter episodes are horrible.
-
I really really really hope that if the worst DOES come to happen, Netflix OR someone else will take over.
I did see a video on Youtube by Tech Insider, saying that Netflix is licensing anime (or getting exclusive streaming rights to certain anime) in order to make up for fact that they're losing a lot of content due to Disney and Time Warner forming their own streaming services. But if that were to happen would they would try to reach a deal to make sure that the same voice actors stay on or will they change the cast entirely for episodes past the Fish-Man Island arc.
-
Why not just use the same cast? Surely Its inexpensive to keep since they arent unionized or anything.

It might be hard for another company to license One Piece to dub it. Surely Funimation isn't dropping the license because it's profitable on the streaming front, just not with the dub.
AFAIK the simulcast is still going strong.

While I don't have a problem with subs in particular, it's a bit of a problem when the series is a 100+ episode anime. That's kind of a deal breaker for me especially since I like having anime on as background noise as I do other stuff. It wouldn't be a problem if I spoke and understood Japanese fluently. Also Sentai Filmworks tried sub only releases for anime with over 100 episodes, mainly Gintama and Eyeshield 21 and they stopped after releasing four DVDs if I recall correctly.
Also it seems like ProjectRevolt2019 is banned, I have guess they were probably an alternate Roman Mack account to get around his current ban for pretty much what ProjectRevolt2019 was saying in the first place.
-
I never minded Luffy's voice in the Funi dub since it's what I heard first (well, second if I count 4kids Luffy,) plus I love Colleen's battle screams, but if another company ever got the series, I'm almost curious to see if they'd try to recast Luffy with someone who sounds closer to Japanese Luffy, or do something entirely different like Funi did with Edward Elric/ Adult Goku and get a guy to voice Luffy instead. Just rambling, but Luffys voice always did seem to be a hot button issue on every dub video on Youtube for one thing, which kinda sucked considering he's the protag of the whole show.
Still, this is all hypothetical/ rumor and I hope it isn't actually cancelled. The above ramblings were just sort of a what-if "might as well speculate what comes next if things come to that" type of thing.
One thing's for sure, dubbed openings would probably be a thing of the past; well, more than they already have been, as other companies probably wouldn't go that extra mile even if Toei said it was ok to do so again.

It's very possible that Netflix will want to invest in the One Piece anime if the live action show succeeds.
-
Well, 12 years is a pretty good run for any show. I dunno what to think if it really is the end of the dub, but at least the good stuff was given the respect it deserves after 4Kids mangled it. Hope some happier news comes around…
-
Even if they did stop dubbing the series, I'd at least want them to try continuing the home video releases as they've already translated them (I'd want the simulcast on a disc, basically); I don't think Funi does subtitled-only BDs, though. I wonder if a subtitled release would be more viable in countries that never got the simulcast.
-
It still seems weird (to me at least) to get through Fishman Island first before possibly dropping the series, rather than stop at the timeskip, if sales were really that low.
But I guess Funi's and Sony's bean-counters have different ideas of "low".Hopefully, if it's only the specials and films that get released from now on, they put out the older films. I'd love to replace those pretty terrible sets they released here in the UK.

I think we’re putting too much stock in this rumor. They’ve dubbed season ten. They just made a podcast to celebrate the series and still advertise it. They’re not going to say, “Happy anniversary, One Piece fans! It’s cancelled!”
I’d put more stock in the Funimation representative that told someone it’ll come in Fall than a voice actor who has “some connections in the industry.”
Also, there are hundreds of people that comment on their Facebook requesting more dubbed episodes all the time. And Funimation has two lines of releases (voyages and collections), which they don’t do with shows that do poorly (not counting their discounted, cheap line of stuff).
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Everyone over at Funimation loves the property. I’d be surprised if they dropped it. Has anyone grilled OPP lately?

If that were the case season two of Saiki K. would have been dubbed by now (or a least the first half of it anyway). Although that one is an interesting case Funimation dubbed and released season one on DVD, but Netflix was somehow able to get the streaming rights to it, making it one of the few Funimation dubs they have on their service alongside Soul Eater and stuff they've dubbed but was later taken back by other companies (such as Aniplex USA).

Funimation has released sub only DVDs, but most of those were to gauge their audience to see if they warranted a dub. I think the only title they released subbed only (albeit only under their SAVE banner) was Oniai.

Maybe I'm going into conspiracy theory territory with this, but I get the feeling that maybe to get around NDA's that might be in place, Funimation might have some of their non-VA employees that work on show pose as average Joe Consumer on their forums. As a way of telling fans of their properties that they're still working on them, but other stuff is also taking up their time (simuldubs) and other outside forces (Toei) are holding up the process. One thing I've seen on their forums posted by other users is that Toei wanted Funi to prioritize Dragon Ball Super over One Piece, because it's better known in North America.
Also Funi rarely comes out and says they're no longer dubbing a series, I think the only time they've actually done that was for Big Wind Up.
-
Yeah. No offense to the person reporting it, but the information posted about the cancellation seemed very sketchy. For Funimation ever to come out and announce a cancellation, let alone “soon,” is so very unlike them. And despite this long hiatus, I’m not seeing the reasoning yet to cancel. It wasn’t doing THAT bad so far as we know, and it’s a big property for them.
-
I certainly don't blame you for feeling this way. It really does sound incredibly farfetched and unorthodox.
I have no reason to doubt my friend, but from what I know the person he heard it from has no reason to lie either.
We'll see what happens. At the end of the day I'm with you guys and hope it isn't true either.

I just don't see this being legit (with the greatest of respect to the sources) Funimation have started up a podcast within the last month or so, created a twitter account and are counting down until the 20th Anniversary. If they were abandoning the dub, then why go to all this effort to get people watching dub episodes (at least 300 of them) doesn't add up.

Exactly. I’m just not seeing any evidence except the hiatus to support full-on cancellation, and the hiatus could be explained by a million reasons, many of which we’ve encountered in past long hiatuses.

Colleen certainly doesn't appear to be abandoning the dub - her twitter account is still One Piece centric. Either that, or she didn't get the memo.

@Mikey:
Alright, so, you can take this with a grain of salt if you want. I have a friend who's a voice actor that has some connections in the industry. They're gonna remain anonymous, but he was told that Funimation is dropping One Piece due to low DVD sales. I don't know about the future movies, specials, or the bits of Punk Hazard, only that they're gonna stop because it simply isn't profitable anymore. Apparently this decision was made very recently and that an announcement should be soon.
This sucks, but at least they dubbed the best parts of the anime already.
No offense or anything personal to you, Mikey, but you rarely post in this thread and now out of the blue, you're sharing a rumor from a friend who claims to have connections and he was told by someone in the voice acting industry. I don't believe a single thing about that when I take into consideration the things Funi has done recently with One Piece on their social platforms. I'm frustrated about the lack of communication for the dub just like everyone else.
With that said, rumors like this can be harmful when they spread within the community because then we're stuck with the blind leading the blind. -
Sorry, but I don't just buy into random internet rumors, especially when I believe them to be on shaky ground. This all seems to hinge solely on the idea that this hiatus is indicative of cancellation. Now I can see why this all has people concerned, but I think solely believing it based on that ignores other factors which seem to make his rumor seem suspect:
1. No offense Mikey, but I don't know you or your "source" well enough to just take you at your word that this is any sort of reliable information. And even if I did believe your friend has "insider information", I have no clue how that person came about learning this info. For all I know your friend was somehow sold a load of bunk; it wouldn't be the first time I've seen a voice actor who supposedly knows things, only to find out there wasn't really any truth to it. When what we’re dealing with here is a “source of a source of a source” with vague details and not a direct “source” it makes it especially hard to believe the legitimacy of it all. Also “they have no reason to lie” is not enough; they could technically not be lying, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the info they heard couldn’t still be false.
2. The timing of this rumor really seems suspect. If I heard this rumor earlier in the year or even next year I might have bought into it at least a little. But supposedly we're getting an announcement in the near future? Seems like a really odd thing to do when they have been recently promoting One Piece quite a bit for its anniversary. And if it was only the sub they were promoting maybe I'd buy that, but the dub still continues to get promotion alongside it. I have a hard time believing this is the type of announcement they would make anytime soon and not at least wait until next year. The only way this makes sense to me is if they're planning on promoting Punk Hazard as their "final dub season". Speaking of which…
3. Punk Hazard is really the big sticking point here that makes rumors like these hard to believe. This is something we know is happening; its information we’ve gotten not through second-hand means, but through the people actually working on the season itself. So why announce cancellation when this is something they have already dubbed and would want to make some money back on it by releasing it? Like I said before, this could involve them advertising it as their "final dub season", but is that really the most sensible thing to do? With the subs having way more episodes currently available is it really wise to announce you're ending the dub? If anything it could potentially turn people off from purchasing Punk Hazard at all because "why bother, if its ending anyway might as well just stick with subs". I get the argument “the DVDs aren’t selling well”, but why potentially do something to damage the remaining sales even further? Again, this seems like the type of announcement you'd want to wait a while on, not announce sometime soon…
4. This is really something they are going to make a formal announcement about? Past experience (especially in regards to One Piece) tells me that this is not something we'd hear a direct announcement about (more likely something that would be told to us by the voice cast or directors or something, several months after the fact)
5. This was a decision they made…recently? What exactly would have happened recently that would have convinced them to halt production? Season 9 finished a year ago and all we've gotten since are a few collections and a few specials (neither of which I see being huge enough factors to determine overall selling power). Why would low sales only be a problem now? Why didn’t this info come out earlier? Again, timing of this just seems all wrong
I mean, if this is really true then so be it, but I'm not going to just go along with any rumor I hear spread online. Heck, I didn't even entirely believe the previous rumor about the fall release; the only reason I entertained it is that the timeframe seemed to make sense and he at least gave a decently believable source for where he could have got that information.
-
FUNimation cancelling the One Piece dub/home releases during their big celebration of the anime's 20th anniversary would be pretty low.
Then again, we don't know what sort of behind the scenes changes are taking place now that Sony has majority stake in the company, and Gen is leaving (or left already). One Piece may be performing well enough for FUNi, but not for Sony.
-
No offense taken, guys. Thanks for your responses. I figured I would share it here with you all in the off chance it could be correct. Like I said we'll see what happens, but hopefully it isn't true.
And who is “the person he heard it from”?
Unfortunately I can't say who it is, man. This is all pretty much what my friend suggested I could say here.
-
First half of the month of August solicits are out. Nada yet.
-
I have no idea what's going on with Sony, Funi or Toei. I do know that One Piece is still a valuable property for Funimation and I doubt they would willingfully cease dubbing the anime if they had the say-so.
-
Does anyone know where Italy is at? I know for sure that Germany is on Dressrosa!
-

According to Italian Wikipedia, they are up to 578, and the Punk Hazard Arc is due to air this year. Same as us basically.

Anyone been listening to the One Piece at a time Podcast? I’ve been having a lot of fun listening! It’s always nice to hear a newbie’s thoughts on the series.
Plus they read the comment I made to one of their questions on this week’s episode!
-
If I'm not mistaken, don't the solicitations go up on the 15th? I've been on and off with keeping up with it for a bit but it's the 16th and nothing yet :wassat:

It is usually the 15th. Every now and again they can be a day or two late, they most likely will be up by the end of the day.
They are up, and sadly (as predicted) no Season 10.
-
-
Yeah I'm not holding my breath anymore….
-
TO be fair, rumors said Fall 2019, and August isn't Fall yet.
-
I know it's been mentioned a hundred times already, but the Merry, and Sunny routes Funimation are promoting for the One Piece binges leading up to the 20th anniversary, ends on the 20th October.
I believe the Punk Hazard Arc will be announced on the solicitations as normal, but as part of the anniversary announcement, not only will the 1st voyage release that week, but most likely Stampede will get announced for a theatrical release before Christmas.
I believe that will likely be the big announcement for October 20th. To me, it's clear that there is no way the dub is cancelled - especially seeing as they are doing this big countdown, and encouraging people to watch the show in order to get caught up. It is odd that they didn't put up trying to get people caught up on the dub though by the 20th October.
Perhaps they didn't do that, because it would be blatantly obvious as to why they were doing it, and want to keep it as much of a surprise as possible, not necessarily a surprise that the dub is continuing, but a surprise as to how much we're getting. I wouldn't rule out getting Punk Hazard and Dressrosa at a faster pace - ie going exclusively up to collection sets moving forward.
-
Yeah I don't believe they're cancelling the dub either, especially with 3D2Y, Sabo, and Nebulandia all coming out in this gap. Plus Stampede coming up, and Funi's "One Piece at a Time" podcast
Personally, I'm more curious on the status of "Hands Up" and Blu-Rays, I wonder if we'll get both, either or neither
-
It's just bullshit that this has taken so long at all. And so we're back to crossing our fingers for solicits in September or October. Then if that falls through, we have to wait for October for them to announce that new episodes are coming eventually? Ugh. This is going to shake out to at least 1.5 years between seasons. All they have to do is record voices, not animate anything. It's really not so time consuming to justify such a wait.
I saw someone at FandomPost mentioning that Funimation dubbed D Gray-man even though it wasn't very profitable. So I just can't imagine OP's DVD sales are worse than shows like DGM, even if the licensing fee is a bit more.

I personally don’t believe it’s cancelled. I mean they did have a One Piece panel at Dallas Expo right? I still believe that One Piece dub will be back in the fall. Although I hope it’s announced in August’s solicits, that way it would be released in October. If that rumor about it being back in the fall is true, then it wouldn’t make sense to say it’d be back in the fall because then it’s release would be in the winter right? Idk, I’m just waiting for August. If nothing as announced throughout the fall or before then, only then will I believe it’s cancelled.

Nebulandia trailer:
Them using the generic FUNi logo for the thumbnails for One Piece stuff recently isn't helping the rumors
-
I already pre-ordered. Must "complete my One Piece collection", after all. :(
-
I suppose I should say that VAs who will remain anonymous for the time being also don't know whats going on and dub production supposedly "wrapped up" last year. I suppose they could release whats been done of Punk Hazard before doing more and that's why they haven't recorded anything as something similar happened with Fishman Island iirc with a long time between the first and second set recording wise, but Jerry Jewell's comments from last year make a lot of sense now considering that he's also Caesar and a year is a lot longer than the time inbetween the first and second Fishman Island sets being recorded
-

Looking at their videos Funimation isn’t exactly super consistent about their use of series logos (in fact, most of their recent clips seem to use either the generic FUNi logo or no logo at all). You probably shouldn’t be using something like that as proof of anything…
but Jerry Jewell's comments from last year make a lot of sense now considering that he's also Caesar and a year is a lot longer than the time inbetween the first and second Fishman Island sets being recorded
Are you referring to that claim that Jewell said at a convention that they were done with both One Piece and Fairy Tail? If so, that didn't really pan out, since Fairy Tail came back later that year…

Yeah, I wouldn't read to much into Funimation putting their logo on thumbnails for their videos, it's likely that it's less work for them than having put out multiple clips with an individual show's logo.
While I can't find a clip of Jerry saying they finished dubbing One Piece and Fairy Tail from a convention in 2018, I did watch a video were he was being interviewed at another convention saying that simuldubs are time consuming (One Piece wasn't part of the topic), which maybe why their releasing specials in the mean time until they can actually announce next set of episodes (NDAs were also mentioned in the same conversation).
