Since the western world is slowly getting their hands on it now, might as well give my two cents since I saw it a while ago in a specific way. I won't be able to get it in any other way anyway, so went ahead and watched it.
I liked it. Spoilers!
! This is definitely written by Akira Toriyama. This pretty much exactly what I expected him to do with Broly and it's freakin' great. He humanized him by making him cute. Yes, cute. He's Akira Toriyama's version of Tarzan. New Broly is a pure boy and despite his personality conveyed more through mannerisms than dialog, he's surprisingly complex. Toriyama is excellent at spotaneous character interaction that gives layers to the characters. I really wanted him to subvert expectations like this with Jiren. Him be like a pure softie inside or something other unexpected and… I don't even hate Jiren. I think he was alright by the end.
! Chirai (green girl alien), Lemo (orange guy alien) and Broly have such an endearing dynamic, I'd watch an whole arc of them. On the other side of the spectrum, Paragus is a really complex antagonist for Dragon Ball. I got the feeling Toriyama would draw from his ideas for Dr. Gero and Android 16 and that's the exact thing he did. You get why he's so angry at King Vegeta - it's absolute humiliation to be pegged down as a lower class warrior considering how class-focused the whole Saiyan culture is and King Vegeta did it basically to "put them in place" - he didn't even straight-up attempt to kill Broly himself, he sent him to die on a desolate planet to prove his lineage is more powerful and both Paragus and Broly get stranded on there for decades. You get it, but he's still really shitty (a really shitty father, specifically). There's also depth there, as he actually seemed to care for his son at first. By the time they are found by Chirai and Lemo, though, all he thinks about is revenge.
! He doesn't let Broly talk for himself, he has a shock collar attached to him, he killed Broly's animal friend, which was th only other connection he ever formed. He treats him like a weapon and despite all that... the reason why Broly turns Super Saiyan is because Freeza kills his father.
! Since when did we get this kind of complexity out of DB? That's a really darn human idea to explore: just how much we value the emotional connections we have. But.. it's also kind of DB's most basic theme, isn't it? We see it with how important grandpa Gohan is to Goku and the times Krillin is killed. The only difference here is that Paragus is a dick and that's strangely powerful to me. Also, kind of new to Dragon Ball. It's kind of like if MHA's Todoroki was more quirky, sheltered to the extreme and didn't have as much self-awareness about his father. Broly doesn't actually like what his father puts him through, either, but he's basically the only one he's ever known, so he still cares for him. I read the summaries and all, but I did not expect it to be so effective.
! Add to this, everyone else is a blast. I hate and love Freeza in the best ways and I love how Bulma's and Freeza's DB wishes match. I adore Goku in this - if you're annoyed by his selfishness, it is toned down a lot, but not non-existent. He is still really naive about Freeza, for one. But he's empathic towards Broly and, again, does fight to protect the Earth despite his initial motivation being to find more strong guys. He's perfectly balanced here, I think. There was a bit where he landed on the pod of a couple of Freeza's henchmen that was a blast and his fight in SSG against Broly is freaking great because it turns into a fight that uses technique and martial arts more than just punching.
! Half the movie is screaming and action, but I'm fully invested in it because of about an hour of set-up and context to it all.
! Now, my problems with it. Oh, the plotting. DB's biggest weakpoint in my eyes. The fact that Blue Kaioken and Blue Evolution aren't in there and there are so many other options besides the Fusion Dance is kind of a headscratcher. Yeah, it's pointed out they can't get the Potara, but why? Was Goku pushed more wouldn't he go Ultra Instinct? That one is kind of avoided because Goku retreats before he is pushed so far. How much do I care? I dunno. Gogeta is kind of a new thing. We have seen Vegetto and Ultra Instinct already. In that sense I welcome it. Would've going Kaioken simply gotten Broly into his green-haired form faster or defeated him? Would've getting the Potara really changed much? It's in that wierd place where it works and makes sense, but there are other options that aren't written out in the most smooth way.
! The second bit is that nobody except Piccolo and Beerus sense what is going on. Anyone could've distracted Broly - you can even see Whis jump in at a point. It guarantees a very solid narrative by focusing on this fairly limited cast, but cameos wouldn't have ruined anything. Make it about knowing when to let others take over or something like that.
! I also think the second half's action could've been cut a bit. Much of it is just action for the sake of action, especially some stretches of the Gogeta fight.
! Finally, the Minus bit still doesn't do much for me. I like everything else and I even like that they removed and changed some of the motivations. Bardock is suspicious because King Cold subjucated the Saiyans and he sends Goku away not because Gine made him nicer, but because he kind of wants redemption after all the battles he's fought, kind of saying Saiyans are affected by what they go through. I like it better, but it's still not all that amazing. Easily the weakest part of the movie to me.
! As a whole package I like it, though. I feel like it's worth it for the spectacle alone, but does also have some excellent character writing backing it up and I'm happy it's not just a bland action-fest like RoF was. Like, even the mindless action bits still look great in this case, too; a bunch of RoF looked pretty average or even ugly when it came to the CG. The animation and music are great. I can still tell the CG is CG, but I don't think it's awful at any point. In a general sense, there was always something going on that kept my attention.
! BoG is still my fave DB movie, but I think this might be up there among DB movies to me.
