Ultimately that will forever be the funniest thing about this thread series.
With the bare exception of Robin (stood out like hell) and Jimbei (teased with "the whole next crewmate will be a boss character" thing), the new crewmate has almost always been INSANELY obvious as soon as they walked on screen.
Yet this thread treats it as a super dee duper mystery topic that only the finest OroJackson trained sleuths can puzzle out with their collages and decoder rings.

Honestly beside the 4 first which were obvious because of "start of the serie", I think the rest was quite versatile. Chopper was obvious but appear mid arc, Robin came out of nowhere, Franky was far from obvious until very late, Brook was obvious from the start and Jinbe is blocked on the waiting list forever.

Franky was pretty obvious pretty fast. Aside from his crazy design and memorable intro, he started bonding with Usopp pretty quickly and got his flashback not long after. There shouldn't have been any debate by the flashback.

Franky only started to make full sense when his flashback happened. A flashy introduction? Bonding with Usopp? These are not obvious. You don't see a character having a flashy introduction and scream "THAT'S IT! NEW NAKAMA!". You don't see a character just growing a bond and immediately think "NEXT NAKAMA!". If it was that easy, you would be buying a lot of candidates at this point.

The only SH we knew before they joined were Zoro(Luffy went looking for him specifically after hearing about him), Jimbei(all the way back in Arlong's arc), Robin when she blew up that guy

That's not at all comparable given that we've already met people with Wano who have been temporarily sailing with the Strawhats. Why is this alleged NN from Wano not among them to give themore time to develop and integrate into the crew?

We knew full well Pekoms was part of BM's crew so it wasn't like there wasn't going to be at least one Mink there (albeit a villain, so by the time he decided to be friendly to the Straw Hats, we'd already seen it and by someone with the ability to remain in control of it). Pedro's history with Big Mom was his reason for going and he got suicided before he could show his Sulong form off so Carrot remained to be the exposition character for Sulong. But like I said, we got to see a herbivore and carnivore and one looks a lot more ferocious than the other (though that's to be expected) so that just shows to go you, even among Minks, Carrot wouldn't be a top-notch candidate. At least Jimbei is basically the strongest Fishman in the world so he's earned his place on the crew out of all potential others in that category. As a Mink, Carrot ain't special. Capable, yes, and likeable enough. Just hardly outstanding.

There's no reason to believe that Oda absolutely had to have written it like that. Instead of blowing himself up, Pedro could have had a heroic last stand in sulong form. Or, Pekoms could have successfully done it, he wasn't a villain after he took Luffy out of the mirror world so going full sulong on the BM pirates could have been his redemption. there are a million and one ways Oda could have shown off sulong with two characters. There's no need to introduce a character just for that and give her the 6th most panel time in the entire arc. Conservation of details, man.

I, personally, was certain Franky was 100% joining when he and Usopp started hanging out together in Franky's place. But it wasn't as clear cut as you're making it out to be. Hindsight is 20/20. You forget that Don Krieg was originally supposed to be a cyborg, so when Franky showed up and was revealed to be a cyborg the reaction from people who knew about that was "cool, so Oda finally used that villain concept", not "OMG, he's so unique, clearly he must join the crew". We were also just on the heels of Usopp getting beat up and Luffy being the most pissed he's been since probably Nami's map room in Arlong park. So until Usopp made friends with Franky, his chances of joining were not the greatest.

Also holy lol at comparing the Franky House beatdown to Luffy vs Arlong. No, they were not seen as equivocal at the time, and no one until you right now has mentioned them as equivocal since.

What does this characterization tell us about these people?

She was in like what four or five panels in the latest chapter, but she was subjected to being a background character to the point that she is very easy to miss clearly demonstrating what Oda wanted to put in the front line and the back line.

She could appear in thousands, but it wouldn't mean jack shit if Oda himself doesn't decide to use panel space to make it more relevant for her.

You can't just shit out some lazy argument that literally seems to have no real understanding beyond the "I like Bunny girl. I want Bunny girl to be in the crew", and then pull out the "hey she appeared in this many panels. THAT GOTTA MEAN SOMETHING, RIGHT?!?!?!?".

Calm your horses. You completely misunderstood (deliberately?) what I was saying. Obviously Luffy was the most pissed off in the map room of AP, but I'm saying that Usopp getting beat up by the Franky family might be the second angriest Luffy's ever been (at that point in the series anyways).

Ignore the panels then, we'll count highlighted moments. Lets compare Carrot (supposedly just an exposition tool for sulong) to Chopper (an actual member of the strawhats).

In WCI Carrot's moments were:

Stow away on the Sunny.
Defeat 3 named villains including Brulée who was the most instrumental logistical piece of that whole arc.
Had an emotional moment seeing her mentor kill himself for their escape complete with a small flashback of her childhood and him telling her of a prophecy.
Sulong.
Had a very emotional scene with Sanji about Pedro's death.

Compare that to Chopper's moments in WCI:

Came up with a plan to defeat bad guys that boiled down to "let Carrot do pretty much everything after I give the signal".
Was used as a cellphone by Jimbei.
Used guard point to block one of BM's punches.

She could appear in thousands, but it wouldn't mean jack shit if Oda himself doesn't decide to use panel space to make it more relevant for her.

Panel time indicates presence, not relevance. With that much we can agree? I guess? Having 6th panel time in an arc is something though, if only by this meaning that her presence was prominent in the arc. Trying to sell her as a background character in WCI, under this circumstance, is almost suicidal. The correlation is not direct, but big presence and complete irrelevance are a contradiction.

On Franky: talking about how fans thought at the time is irrelevant information. There should be a way to explain why him joining was so clear from minute one. Stories about how people reacted in 2005 are useless for this discussion. Now, if you show me something that seems unequivocal and definitive enough about the character and his early role in the arc, I'll gladly take it.

On the premise at least, I'm sure we could debate this and have actual arguments and counterarguments. I'm just not in the mood right now, for reasons.

Do you disagree that the fleet is incomplete? You were not particularly specific as to what you disagreed on, so I am just asking.

I think it is fairly obvious that their number will be 8000. We got a first huge batch after Dressrosa which amounted to 5600. Usopp has said he has 8000 followers. It is particularly funny, that Luffy rejected the fleet, they became a pseudo-fleet. Meaning that they are actually "followers". So, if 2400 more will join, where will they come from? I think the Minks, Samurai and the Three-eyed Tribe are good potential fill ins.

Furthermore, it does not help that Oda has been consistent at keeping the parallels in how he showcased the crew being split.

We got an arc with the Swordhats in Dressrosa. And then ~coincidentally~ we get an arc featuring only the Swirlyhats. Even the end of each arc, where after the events we go to see what the other side has been up to back then in Zou, now in Wano. Given that Oda introduced more than 50% of the fleet. He can develop the future captains more in detail, and make their cover stories different. The problem with Dressorosa was that it tried to introduce all these new characters , with their ambitions besides everything else going on with Mango, Law, Kyros, etc.

So if the Swordhats got to interact with fleet captains in the making, why not do the same with the Swirly Hats? Even if we scratch parallels out.

Do you not see more fleet captains being added? And, whom could those captains potentially be?

I didn't say her flashback was emotional. I said her reaction to Pedro's death was emotional and that a significant amount of time was spent on it.

OroJackson theorists are basically a toxic spillover from REACTION style youtube theory videos.
It's a whole culture built around showiness and eye-grabbing (think clickbait style) titles, presentation, and visuals.
Actual analysis or thought isn't really the point, getting attention by honking loud on a clown horn and having pretty pictures is.
I think most of them aren't even self-aware about this. They learned how to make theories from irritating morons on youtube who damn sure know they are trying to get views, then these people take their methods to a forum and copy them. Except unlike the loud empty semi-conmen on youtube they don't earn e-dollars for it, they get views, responses, and lots and lots of really empty praise.

The theory is designed for making the theory maker feel good and appreciated.

Lost in the shuffle unfortunately is the Japanese comic book _One Piece_.

So I have only recently take a look at Orojackson due to how often they are mention. Where do they post their randoms factoids like panel times? Is there a special section or do you have to actually search for it?
