Also, does that one guy Tien basically killed in original Dragonball count?
Who are we talking about here??
Yamcha's role as a serious combatant?? -
Does he mean Mercenary Tao?
-
@S.C.:
Does he mean Mercenary Tao?
Why would anybody think Taopipi was "basically killed" in that scene.
-
I don't know, it's been like 15 years since I've seen the DB run on Toonami.

Considering the Funimation dub basically wrote in fanfiction lines in the DB dub at places, I dunno, maybe they had Tenshinhan say something stupid like "AND NOW I MEGA KILLED YOU!" or whatever.

now that's just silly
people don't die in anime dubs
they stop moving for a little bit then go to another dimension -
I meant the guy that Tien hurt so badly that he came to to the audience in full bandages, and then killed over while cursing Tien. I believe it was during the Tien vs Yamcha fight but it was long ago that it's hard to remember.
Edit: Just reread the 22nd tournament arc, and didn't find it, I thought he dodonpa'd someone to near death, maybe I'm thinking of Tao or something.

Spoiler time!
! 127 - 17 is out. 128 - Vegeta is out and Goku goes Ultra Instinct. 129 - Ultra Instinct Goku vs. Jiren. No mention of Freeza, not suspicious at all.
All down to execution here to me.
They can't wrap everything up in just a few episodes. Still have a suspicion it ends with a hook or cliffhanger.

We'll settle this with hammer guns at 40 paces.

Sounds like fun. I'll bring some jelly donuts.

Yugioh hiding all its horrific death with "the shadow realm" actually worked to a degree early on given the very context of the souls living in puzzles and some of the stuff Pegasus and Marick pulled and inner Yugi's mind and all.
And then they did stuff like having buzzsaws coming to chop off your legs that they painted a glowing blue, or two guys falling through the glass ceiling of a syscraper, and at that point the wallpaper just didn't cover the bodies anymore.
Similarly, when you very first started watching DBZ if you started on say, Namek, you could maybe buy into the "next dimension" thing because you have no idea what the rules of the series are and how their fireballs work. (I know it actually fooled me a tiny bit for the first episode or two I saw.) But then you go back and watch from the start and you see Goku flat out murdered and given a halo, and then you watch the others all die, and Vegeta kill a ton of people… the cover up doesn't work for very long.
-
My favorite edit will always be blue Popo. He was an angel all along. It's even funnier because Goku was learning similar principles when he first fought Popo.

! So 17 pulled a Vegeta and blew himself up…
-
17 was really great this tournament. This was such a great display of growth for him, too.
I don't particularly care for Jiren's backstory all that much, but it has interesting elements and fits the survival theme of this whole arc, too. Vegeta survived because he was stronger, even if 17's sacrifice was equally well intentioned ultimately. The strong survive, the "weak" die.
I'm also happy about how Vegeta can't keep Blue up at all across this whole episode.
-
Goku felt really out of character this week.
"LET'S ALL FIGHT TOGETHER" just doesn't seem like his jam. Though maybe they could justify it with desperation in the Namek four minutes that are left?
-
! Holy crap, 17 is actually dead.
! Also they kinda botched Jiren's backstory. -
That random backstory lol.
Oh man. This episode was super wonky all the way through.
-
So Jiren is basically two steps removed from All-Star Batman. Got it. If Frieza hadn't been busy eating dirt I would've expected him to chime in with, "Just a village? Oh how adorable."
Best part of the episode was 17 still being bent on that goddamn boat and Belmond going, "What the fuck is wrong with you?!" because that was my reaction as well lol
-
I still take it over crying infant and even Cell's arrogance thing.
At least it explains why he got so strong and why he looks down on those who aren't strong.
It's like the most "ok" thing to ever "ok". I also actually appreciate the brevity. That's how DB is. I don't need episodes upon episodes of backstory.
Just tell me why he got strong (he lost everyone he cares about and trained under someone really strong). Ok, cool. He's so focused having to be strong because of that. Okay, cool. Relevant to the survival thing.
-
If Jiren's master died, who taught him how to be strong? Belmond? Toppo?
-
I just figure his old master was a pretty kickass teacher and he got most of his strength from there. That and just like every new enemy in DB he's just naturally really strong.
-
Will Vegeta be able to survive against Jiren? Don't miss the next episode, "Vegeta Falls!"
-

Aren't these Japanese episode titles who spoil the storyline lovely?
-
17 was the MVP.
A far cry from his truck stealing punk days.
-
Odds of him being alive to force the tie/win?
-
So it is the consensus that 17 is the mvp of this arc right?
I mean who honestly expected him to last this long?
-
So i see in future episodes a fight VS the guy who killed Jiren master:ninja:
-
Maybe if the series wasn't ending in less than 10 chapters
-
Why doesn't Vegeta spam hs final explosion, since it doesn't appear to have any repercussions for him?
-
I was kind of waiting for Belmond to be the big reveal of who killed Jiren's master lol
-
Why doesn't Vegeta spam hs final explosion, since it doesn't appear to have any repercussions for him?
Because it did have an effect. He keeps going out of Blue several times and 17 even comments he's just trying to give them just a few minutes to catch their breath.
As dumb as the recovering in a few minutes idea is, the fact is that both Vegeta and Goku are running on pure willpower and aren't really at full strength. Goku has a chance because pushing him will push him to Ultra Instinct, but not so much Vegeta.
Jiren should just knock them off, but he's an arrogant asshole. These are the character reasons. The easy answer would be plot demands it. Just like Goku showing up just in time for the Saiyan and Freeza fights or none of the characters sending Dende to heal Goku when Freeza had no idea of his existance or Goku''s random "I can now read people's minds" power that is never brought up again or nobody interrupting transformations until the ToP arc… you get the point. I'm feeling salty about DB's plotting again, lol.
-
I'm just going to assume that Blue 2 has regen like God did and call it a day.
-
It's such an easy explanation.
USE IT WRITERS. (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
-
I was kind of waiting for Belmond to be the big reveal of who killed Jiren's master lol
I'm sure it's still coming. The invincible Jiren will be forced to accept that he betrayed his own sense of justice to work under his greatest enemy.
Either that or Goku and Vegeta will punch him really hard.
-
Any self respecting god of destruction wouldn't leave a planet there. It was a b tier warlord or something.
-
I find it ironic? that Jiren is this angry and strong from losing a village, master and few friends, yet Vegeta lost his ENTIRE PLANET AND RACE and is WORKING WITH SAID PERSON WHO DID IT so it kind of makes Jiren seem even less developed and just a contrived background.
-
All in all I'd say Jiren's backstory reminded me a lot of Genos' from OPM.
Lost their entire fam, became focused on strength, and utterly bores the audience with how generic it is.
-
Jiren also kind of didn't have Dragon Balls to bring everyone he loved back.
Vegeta didn't really care about his race back then and they've moved on, but right now U7 can easily wish their loved ones back. The "lesson" sticks because of that.
He's essentially what Goku could become in a worst case scenario if all of the deaths that have happened to the cast stuck. His backstory is kind of similar to how the Saiyans and Androids attacked, too. Essentially kind of a Future Trunks situation except he's not as strong-willed and becomes an asshole.
-
Goku also lost everyone that he loved before 13 years old, granted he did it himself and it was only one person, but he still doesn't know that he killed old man Gohan, and he couldn't revive him with the dragon balls as he was dead for too long and in peace.
Goku didn't face responsibility for these actions, but he did face the loss and solitude that it brought him.
So, this points at one conclusion: Jiren is the dark lord.
-
I do think Jiren's background is a little basic
like the design, but it's something. Some of the Z-Fighters have lost dear things (Vegeta especially), but again, they're from a universe where there are glorified undo buttons. -
Goku actually does know he killed Gohan. We see him realize during the Vegeta fight. It's one line, so it's easy to forget, but he does.
But yeah, Jiren lost people he cared about twice and could not bring them back. So now he thinks strength is absolute. Screw your friendship, attachments are for pansies and so on.
His weakness even is that he doesn't seem to be able to take multiple opponents/targets as well. How Goku alone (since he'll be the only one left) could exploit that is another thing.

If only DBS were also self-aware about it…

I wish a little more was done with that but I really liked that a) Goku remembered and b) expressed remorse

I do, too. In fact I think him living alone in the forest could've been addressed more in general. I always thought that's why Goku wanted a family. He was all alone as a kid all that time. He didn't want to be alone.
But DB doesn't really dwell. It's why I like it, but sometimes I wish it did just a little bit.
-

Granpa Gohan explicitelly forgave him like 10 years before that moment, the last time they saw eachother. And out of all of things that Goku is responsible, why hold over him the one that wasn't his fault?
