Chapter 892: Acknowledging a Strong Enemy

@Kaido:

This is the kind of thing I can see oda stretching, he's got to lead that cake back to Cacao right? Literally everything else will be there.
If she eats it off panel or alone with bege what was the whole point in her eating it at all? -
That's true, Capone went to Cacao Island, left and is now heading to another island, and the Straw Hats still will need 3 hours to get to Cacao.
-
She probably already killed Ceasar off-screen and ship all his research away while laughing maniacally with Blackbeard on the phone.
I love that we have come full circle on Smoothie being so useless that we're now inventing head canon of all the amazing things she must be accomplishing just off panel X-D
Super disappointed that Sanji doesn't seem to have a super secret plan after all. And goodness I underestimated how bad a shape the Sunny is in! It's definitely been through it.
I refuse to engage in future sight trolling mindfuckery this early, and will take the end of this chapter at face value until proven otherwise. But what in the world could freaking KATAKURI be so afraid of happening to Luffy? He seemed genuinely spooked.

Seem pretty clear that he's afraid that Luffy might beat him (even if the chance is very very low) due to his COO potentially rising to catch up to his own. That's why hes trying to finish him off quickly to avoid that slight possibility.
Also I want to say that I really love Katakuri as a villain.. other then the slip-up for his "meal time" he as otherwise not underestimated Luffy at all and is taking every chance he can get to defeat/kill him. -
in the last page, did luffy really lost a piece of his torso? that can't happen right? it being luffy's sight of the future is more probable. maybe next chapter we'll see luffy dodge that bullet and katakuri's attack.
-
Katakuri is going to eat a fist. His back is going to dig into the ground.
-
Sanji still seems to have at least a suggestion for how to get onto Cacao Island. But from his phrasing all I can picture is the Sunny flying onto the scared faces of Oven's company either from a Coup de Burst or maybe a wave created by Jinbe.
-
I read Jamini.
Interesting… Nami's Haki starts to develops.
Interesting... Oven says that if you have a mirror that you love so much, you can throw it to the ocean...Who's in the fucking ocean???
FUCKING POUND!!!!!!!!!
Well played Oda.
-
Watching Katakuri fans on OJ butt hurt because, erm, Luffy made himself into a punching bag while he levels up his Haki and their hero will likely be defeated LOL. It's not like we've seen anything like that before.
-
Let me rephrase. Katakuri's mouth is going to be open so wide, he will actually eat Luffy's fist. Unfortunately for him, it is not a sweet donut, it just hurts.
-
I feel like if the last page was future vision, it would’ve been way more fatal. Like the spear going straight into his chest instead of shaving off a side.
-
Luffy getting ganked is absolutely a vision
Oda isn't using Compote because he's too much of a coward to make the Fruit-Fruit Fruit a real thing
-
Dwarf Pirates bout to fuck shit up in the New World. That Usopp canon is priceless tho.
Sanji acting like himself again and making Nami feel uncomfortable as usual.
Big Mom apparently wasn't attacking with anything huge or devastating judging by the state of their ship.
Bege still gonna attempt an assassination? Thats not gonna work out well. In addition to that, none of the strawhats seem particularly interested in Pudding atm. Which is weird because I thought they'd have a few things to say about being lied to like that. But I guess nows not the time for that. Or maybe they've forgiven her already? Nah seems a bit too easy. Though it is interesting that she's on the ship with them now. Will she stay or go back to her family?(obviously the latter but it's still a fun question to ponder).
We got a tidbit of characterization for Smoothie but I'm gonna need more than that. Katakuri alone is rich in characterization & themes and even Cracker was characterized pretty well. Hopefully the next few chapters focuses on her.
Is Big Mom on Prometheus slower than on Zeus? or is it just because she's staying close to the ship trying not to damage the cake?
Lastly, I'm not entirely sure if Katakuri means that Luffy is actually reaching his level in terms of CoO. He could simply mean his own Haki is wearing down and Luffy is catching up. Regardless that last panel was pretty brutal. Katakuri actually tore out a chunk of flesh. Hows Luffy gonna recover? Hell how is he gonna use Gear 4th with a hole in him? I know everything thinks that this is a vision but if it isn't the only other way out of it is if Luffy starts to awaken awakening(even if only partially) and he reforms like Kid Buu/Plastic Man. That or he keeps fighting despite the injury Which OP characters are known to do. Maybe his flesh will come back after he eats meat? shrugs It worked with milk. lol.
-

It's possible it's a future vision, but I think it's more certain that it's reality. And a side tear of his abdomen, while brutal, is most likely not lethal for the time being, until loss of blood becomes an issue as time goes on. I think that's the route Oda is going with this. To make this such a dire situation that Luffy has to defeat Katakuri quickly or he'll die, so some extreme focus and calmness is required to bloom his haki, and Gear 4 pummel Katakuri out of commission. The wound is serious - no doubt, and the Germa could technically help him survive if Chopper doesn't have better means to heal Luffy. He'll just have a kick-ass scar for the future.
-
How the hell is Chopper gonna fix that hole?
-
Decent chapter. Nice to See Smoothie becoming more active (I hope) It seems like Her and her siblings are going to form a cool trio of death, which i cannot wait to see. THAT SAID…
"Little by little, his observation Haki is approaching mine…"
Oda, Please SHOW, DONT TELL.
Pretty much all of this fight has been offscreen. We got some glimpses of it, but this is something that has to be stressed. Luffy far as I see has just been getting his ass handed to him. Sure, maybe he's deliberately taking haki attacks in stride to improve his own or something, but at the moment thats a case of headcanon, and speculation. It's a very lazy way to write a fight especially this one off-screen for so long, despite it going on for what feels like 20 chapters now.A younger me would have said "well maybe the anime will expand on it" buttttt I've been saying that from early dressrosa to now. And their additions are usually poorly-paced monstrosities, that take choose to slow down on the worst parts of a chapter.
regardless, it was a good chapter, I just wish Oda would spend a bit more time showing us the fight to make it clear that Luffy is getting stronger rather than just bringing us back to the fight, and saying "now he's stronger" Which is a bit of a shame because everything else about this fight has been awesome. Luffy's determination for this one is like nothing ever. It's thrilling, firs his character, and facilitates his growth, I dont want to see his growth cheapened by using narrative shorthand. Of course theres always the chance that Im just arc fatigued, and reading this weekly is warping my perspective of events.

Taking it without Haki is deliberate because he's saving his Haki till when he get the hang on how to hit Katakuri. Katakuri on the other hand is mindlessly launching attacks at Luffy hoping he dies or collapse. At this point, Katakuri is begging Luffy to die. Embarrassing for so called undefeated man.

I feel like that'd make it too obvious, right now it's like 50-5₩ because people are debating if he could still fight or if this shoukd be the knockout if it really hits so who knows
-
This is probably head canon but Smoothie still strikes me as insecure? Perspero was chewing her out and seemed to angrily and impatiently talk to her but all she did was calmly answer him and obey him. On the other hand, her sisters seem stuck-up and lazy (men are idiots, drinking tea) and for a moment Smoothie sounds confident ("you should have left it to us from the beginning") but comes back and meekly berates her sisters ("…Don't say that...").
It just gives me the impression that Smoothie very hardly attempts to fit in with her siblings. Whereas Kata is the object of admiration of all the siblings, Smoothie is a try-hard and sort of a door-mat. Comparing the "perfect, kind and caring" best big bro to the stuck-up and conceited Smoothie trio leaves a very bad taste.
Aside from that, I noticed a very very tiny nami seemingly raising her hand and talking to Pudding on page 10 while Jimbei is slowly moving to sit on the chair? at the helm. Makes me wonder if Nami is berating her like with Ceasar (you helped us but you suck anyway) or if she's just thanking her. I'm also curious about what Pudding's reaction is, in this so far. She was quiet and pensive (.....?) when Sanji threw himself at Nami and co.
And, interesting to note, Mont D'Or fully believes that the strawhats planned the tamate box fiasco so at least Fishman Island should be safe from Big Mom's wrath?

Ten chapters ago the chapter title came from the crew being underestimated by one of the most powerful organisations in the world. This week, it emphasises them being acknowledged as a serious threat. What progress!
And yet week after week people complain that nothing happens
-
Nami seems to be waving at her being nice, if she were angry there be more signs like angry stuff but she doesn't seem to be, Pudding herself doesn't seem to be jealous or anything negative or withdrawn.
-
No, I mean it's just a graze. A large graze, but still a graze.
To me it looked like Mogura was spinning so fast that when Luffy was unable to avoid contact with its grip it burned him. I could compare that to touching grinder with side of your body.
That big panel on last page looks like its fire/burning effect and not Luffys side being torn off. I doubt we see wound itself in this chapter. Also Luffy must be one of best people in One Piece world when it comes to avoiding attacks- pre-timeskip Luffy was able to avoid Mihawks attacks. Remembering that adds to this fight I think.
Same as remembering Luffys words to Hody- when Hody was suprised that his bite had no big effect on Luffy and Luffy replied he is 100 times tougher than this- now it loooks like it was true. -

I'm wondering, if Big Mom eats all the cake by herself and just passes out, that might give Capone or someone else a chance to assasinate her again.
-
Maybe her "Iron Balloon" defense will be back and she can't get hurt by non-Yonkou opponents, and if someone like Capone tries to attack her, she might wake up and just beat them all.
-
Is there someone strong near by? Maybe someone like Perospero or Snack or someone will save the day.
After all, I think she won't care about Mother Caramel after she gets the cake, so I'm going for the first one. Basically, she will be unbeaten after she has eaten the cake.
But what do you think?
-
-
We are missing Pudding reaction, when Sanji says to Nami "I love you" Is it that Oda doesn’t know yet how to handle Sanji womanizing behaviour in their couple :-). I loved Jinbe "it’s not haki" quote btw.
Chopper also seems to have teleportations properties in this chapterAlso I guess nobady foresee, Bege fleeing with the cake and Mum. That was definitely a surprise and I’ m curious how they will handle stopping her. When we thought the climax was approaching with the cake eating, that’s clearly not the case anymore
-
Considering they will be like rats in a trap once they get to cacao Island, it's germa time to show up to make it more even. Or just they split with sanji going to cacao alone while they go other way with smoothie on their back. And germa will meet sanji at cacao.
Seems oda is setting up sanji vs oven, since he doesn't have the balls to make sanji fights smoothie. Long legs should be for sanji his main enemies, since he is only leg fighter.
And it's not just the sexism thing, sanji will forever get to end his journey and dreams if females attack him and none to protect him.He managed to overcome his zeff weakness that got him here in the first place, but still has zeff rules he still uses and gets him in trouble. And I don't care what people say that is oda's place, not him, he is adult he should be able to make his own mind about sexism.
Dam, I don't know why people trash JUdge, he is the better father, zeff just sucks.
-
I know many people saw the bullet. But did anyone see the bullet actually hit Luffys leg?

You might be onto something with 1, except the whole Brook rescue bit proves she doesn't even need to wake up. I think it'd be a pretty Oda kinda move to bring that back and have her beat Bege and his crew easily without even waking as they approach, assured of victory.
-
-
What buffles me is that the handling of the climax of the arc, the feeding of the cake, was assigned to a minor character, and in absence of every strawhat.
So what everyone thinks will happen with Capone and the cake? Maybe he will find Liquor island surrounded as well and decides to bring the cake to Cacao island for the strawhats to help him with the climax? Any ideas?
-
I know many people saw the bullet. But did anyone see the bullet actually hit Luffys leg?
That looks more like an arrow to me. Bullets often bounces from Luffy's body.
-
someone on youtube called Big Smoke has an interesting idea about what happened in the last 2 pages
he says that we already have a split view of future and what is happening right now at the end of the chapter
! Look at the "Coloring" in the last 1 1/2 pages. It seems to me that grey shows what is happening right now and white what is going to happen in the future.
In the bottom right panel from the second last page, Luffy and his outfit are grey, when an arrow is flying towards him .
In the following panel he is white and gets hit by the arrow in the right leg
Next two panels of him, we see him grey again and he realizes that there is no arrow in his right leg (yet).
! On the last page he sees Katakuri go for him in the future (first two panels) and we see that he starts moving away at this very moment in the third panel, where he is grey again
Last panels portray him white again and show what will happen in the future if he doesn't dodge.
-
I was thinking the same thing.
Its very ambiguous .
If Luffy were to get hit by an attack like that, he wouldnt have shown much of an improvement since hes already been getting hit hard this entire time. -

If Luffy were to get hit by an attack like that, he wouldnt have shown much of an improvement since hes already been getting hit hard this entire time.I'm on board with this, one pannel shows him predicting the initial attack kata knows he will try to avoid it so will attack elsewhere, the ending pannel of him being stabbed is Luffy predicting katas reaction to Luffy predicting katas reaction to Luffy first prediction.
Talk about some inception level shit
I believe the next pannel we see Luffy, it will be the pannel showing he has finally surpassed katakuri in coo
-
If that's true, it's a pretty cheap way of creating suspense, not unlike something Kubo would do.
And considering we get Katakuri introspect in between, doesn't seem very likely.
Btw, is anyone else getting tired of Luffy vs Katakuri? The fight had a nice momentum but then Oda started taking his sweet time with it, and now it's pretty boring. I can only hope Katakuri doesn't fall to some form of nakama powerup.
-
It was boring the first 6 chapters, then oda made it fun with revealing the true katakuri, luffy eating his mochi and using gear 4, then having to run and locking katakuri inside….then luffy return and makes it boring again for... idk how many chapters since then. I just don't see how gear 4 fails and almost gets ko'd yet, luffy still returns and is using BASE luffy for some chapters now. what is the plan? just try to dodge everything and improve coo while katakuri just wrecks him some more until he won't be able to take it anymore but reveals some BS powers up that goes from luffy owned by katakuri in 12 chapters to luffy owning him in 1 chapter?
The fight with cracker was good, short but good. And it did last 11 hours but you didn't feel it like now.

Now that I think of it, how come that sniping whatever got through Luffy's leg ? I thought that was the whole point of being made of rubber ?
Is this haki infused /seastone bullets ? Or the piercing ammo Pudding introduced earlier ? In which case I am a little puzzled it's any good against Luffy. Also, inb4 Katakuri's KO'ed body will be what flies through that huge mirror on Caco island (that translation is hilarious ) right in the middle of the crowd for everyone to witness. Then Luffy slips through in the shocked silence.
Luffy's rubber defense is weird, supposedly something like Alvida's club initially had no effect on him and yet with or without Haki, simple blunt-force blows have been able to hurt him throughout the series after that, so it's not a consistent means of being resistant to projectiles or non-bladed attacks. But that spear attack reminded me of the vision of what would happen to him if Arlong took a bite out of him, which would have completely removed a chunk of his torso rather than just leaving a set of teethmarks. And since that little recall was only a 'vision' (since it was just a hypothetical and not observation haki), I'm thinking this might also have been one…like Luffy finally got one up over Katakuri, and Katakuri saw this happening, but Luffy was able to foresee it first, avoid it, and while Katakuri is having the vision, get in an attack on him. Otherwise I don't see Luffy walking away from this without some total BS asspull, unless it involves an awakening of his DF.

The coloring theory…works, actually. Pretty well. Although it'll be INCREDIBLY disappointing that Oda went this route for the SOLE purpose of ending the chapter on some cheap false tension that he can easily backtrack from. That's some Aizen-level shit.
I love the narrative consistency that Chopper had to lay on Brooke's head the entire chapter because he can't yet move after coming out of Monster point.
On the other hand Oda, please stop using monster point as a means to job for other threats. At this rate Chopper might as well go find Smoker and fully learn the Jobber way...

He will fall because of being paralyzed with mental shock after hitting ground with his back. Then Luffy will brutally KO him.

Yeah, it was kinda good until the merienda. After Luffy left mirror world the tension died and now it's just sorta going on. It'd work much better if it started later and could go on naturally without contrived breaks and having to wait until everything else is finished. Maybe Oda didn't now how long would he drag the pursuit? It'd be just like Oda if true.

Better alternatives are still illegal alternatives. Don't get so high and mighty when you're essentially stealing from the very series you come here to discuss
-
IMO the banal repetition mostly works in the battle's favor - once Luffy finds a way to subdue Katakuri, and if the final blow is nearly as creative as the one against Cracker, it'll be pretty cathartic. That wasn't the case for Cracker since Oda skipped Luffy finding a way to eat the biscuits and stall Cracker out - if he chose to skip Luffy going through the process of improving his Haki and returned to the battle once Luffy was already on the verge, that'd pretty much detract from everything the battle was leading up to. There's definitely still room for improvement in terms of Oda writing longer battles, and that scene on Nuts Island was still hella unnecessary, but I like where this is leading.
Also, I don't really see why the last two pages being a future sight fakeout would be so bad - it would be a great way to demonstrate Luffy hitting that milestone, and I'd highly doubt that it would result in Katakuri eating dirt right here and now. The problem with Aizen and his fakeouts was that he kept using a ton of different methods to avoid death, many of which were nonsensical. Luffy just has future sight, and I would hope that Oda wouldn't do more fakeouts if the last few pages are indeed one, because there'd be little point given that we already know what Luffy has to rely on in order to triumph over Katakuri.

You're actually wrong. It's a pirate manga; therefore, pirating it is the right way of reading it and something one should be proud of. Doing otherwise would be just like playing legal GTA or watching Highlander without beheading the previous owner of your DVD or whatever. Seriously, what's the point?
-

Well, Oda did the grey and white coloring many times throughout the series, actually pretty frequently. So i wouldnt see the coloring as proof that there is something anormal going on. But there is certainly something fishy, but only the part where luffy got shot in the right leg. In te next panel it sems there is no wound or any trace of a bullet or an arrow. I thought that he is seeing himself got shot and so he dodged, but there is no motion from Luffy that would indicate it. Plus no projectile of any kind is passing by.
Since i do believe that he did not dodge it, i think he got shot and got distracted, so Katakuri took the opportunity and tried to seal the deal. So i do believe that Luffy got indeed hit by Katakuri.
OOOOR he foresaw the entire scene. He sees the bullet coming and then his Kenbunshoku no Haki, Instinct, Stress and Adrenaline all kick in and his body warns him that, when he dont dodge that bullet then Katakuri will finish him off. -
