Chapter 888: Lion

It’s an Oozaru thing
-
There, I fixed that for you. Seeing how even random mooks from Big Mom's crew can spot it from a mile away and know what it is and how it's called, I'm guessing there must have been an "everything Minks" special in the New World Times recently. With maybe a map to their secret-phantom-mobile-island-noone-ever-heard-of. At least that would explain how Jack found it. :getlost:
In all seriousness, they could have heard about it from Pekoms or other BM crew Minks. But seeing how the Straw Hats didn't know a thing about Minks a month ago (in comic time I mean), I find it disturbing when exposition is given by such random characters. I would have preferred it coming from another Mink, or someone like Mont d'Or who is privy to Big Mom's books of freaks and can believably have a vast knowledge of the world. Or just Jimbe's words would have been enough.
Minks live on Totto Land. So it's likely the people there are at least somewhat familiar with how the full moon affects them.
-
it's pronunced sulon or suron for sure since katakana is a phonetical alphabet…what might change is the romanization depending on what kind of language oda was trying to emulate..MS went with chinese.
like i said,it's a shiryu/shiliew situation..they are pronunced the same,but one was a japanese name,the other is english
I guess this just has me curious if its a translation issue kind of like Shenlong vs Shenron from Dragon Ball.
-
100 bucks that Chopper is going to learn that Suron form in Wano arc
Well, his Monster point is already pretty powerful. As in insanely strong.
-
It hasn't even been a day and I can tell I'm going to get sick of the forum's KaCarrott jokes.
Folks, that was already the joke in Dragonball. Changing Carrot's name to be like the Dragonball name isn't a new thing… it's actually the already existing joke from thirty years ago.
Stop it.
so for you the chances Oda choose carrot name for that are 0 ?
-
Amazing chapter. My only major concern is that Oda uses this new Ceylon power as a plot device to bring back Pedro.

Feel like Carrot would've hinted at that being a possibility though.

My major concern is that if Carrot permanently joins, or minks appear in the remaining two known major battles (Kaido war, final war), that we get a Luna ex Machina and every major war just happens at a full moon night
-

If it happens (and I still find it really unlikely), the more possible option would be the revelation of Carrot's father being a brilliant scientist and some "false moon" creation every other day.
-
Think OP got its fill of big scientists.
-
Carrot's power feels like an ass pull. I wonder where the other half of the crew is and how they're dealing with the moon right now. I doubt Luffy's half of the crew will reach Wano in exactly a month's time unless there's more island arc along the way.
-
Wonder if anything serious will happen with Big Mom losing weight like this.
Maybe big mom always had a high metabolism but outate it regardless, like a toned down luffy after tankman full version but always happening
-
Or Brook hypnotizes her to see something else as full moon.
Hopefully not Nami's or Robin's breasts as that would trigger her SSB form which just would one-shot Blackbeard and therefore kill any tension and stakes.
-
the battle between luffy and katakuri is the most boring fight ever. luffy tried almost everything, even g4 failed….what is next, back to Square one , regular default luffy haki punches and delay the ending even more. this is why you give every SH battles, so when the guy that gets battles all the time gets boring, someone from the main cast can show something new. but nope, the other shs are too focused on running and sht.
-

Carrot is not going to join. This character is only a sidekick because this arc is ALice in Wonderland themed.
-
Carrot will join and she'll keep a picture of a full moon around to look at every battle. Problem solved
Kidding, but she will have to be around next arc since the minks will be there. Just one of those stick-around-for-a-while peeps like Vivi
-

You think Inuarashi doesn't have that in mind when he said next time they fight they will see their true forms? They're going to attack when the full moon is about to come out. It's going to happen, nothing gets a build up without a pay off so…
Pretty cool transformation, I wonder how much variation we'll get between minks.
Will this be a super saiyan type deal or a bankai type deal basically?
It feels weird hoping for something to go down the bleach route in some fashion.
So you're thinking it will be between physical transformations and amplified abilities that bring something a little new to the table but not too unfamiliar?
-

…Isn't that what Carrot just did?
-
@Kaido:

carrot just repeated the –allies sacrifice-- for SH so they can run some more. you got that with germa, then Pedro, capone, now carrot. and carrot just had some small moment now and it-s unlikely that she can hold many bm pirates, it-s not some 1vs1, so she is the next character to look ded .
-
@uniaka:
luffy tried almost everything, even g4 failed….
I dunno, but for me that makes the battle actually interesting and suspenseful.
-
Pretty great chapter
Loved the cheeky katakuri banter, asking luffy to join his crew is another mirror event
Carrot transforming might lower her chances of joining but she's definitely a badass ally
I think she'll face perospero which Id love but I still wonder whether this is her time to shine
Daifuku is the yonji of the big mom pirates, smoothie is there too I guess
Big mom might have a quick metabolism like how when luffyburned all that flab after G4 -
Had to admit, some panels of KaCarrot felt a little Bleachy, but damn was I jumping in my chair. Big Emperor took the words out of my mouth: Thank you Oda.
Hoping the pace goes up next chapters though.
-
The chapter was pretty good, not as excited about Carrot's transformation. Wished it was all saved for Wano. I don't see why Carrot transforming raises her crewmate potential. Overall thoughts on the chapter:
Great the long limb bros started a porn crew.
Several things to notice from the few pages we got from Luffy vs Katakuri. Luffy has ditched Brulee and is breathing hard, which means that they have been fighting for a while. Then as I already pointed out, Katakuri did not create holes around his body to dodge Luffy's attacks, he moved his entire body. Luffy is slowly gaining ground.
I also liked further information on how Big Mom's ability is affected by her current state. It is quite funny to see the cannonballs so eager to die. I hope that Oda keeps focusing on Jimbe's skills throughout their journey around the New World.
I am assuming this is the first time Mama has gone for such a long period of time without her tantrums being resolved. I am not sure if I'll like where the story will go with her getting skinnier.
I wish Oda would have let Chopper handle things, and left the moon for Wano. If this is supposed to be Carrot's moment to shine, if just feels forced. The good thing about the transformation is that it is something that needs to be trained. Carrot's thought process made me think that Pedro was really dead…but then I laughed. Looking forward to every other Mink's transformation. Pekoms, Baratie and Bepo should be pretty good. Also, why did she lose her claw gloves, are they that useless?
I hope we get a clarification on the moon cycles.
It never gets old, Daifuku you are the same type of fool as Oven.

Did anyone think of that long haired guy from CP9 when Carrot was transforming in one of the panels?

Omg yep looks exactly the same lol
-
So where did Luffy dropped Brulee?

She still gets to display her powers and fighting skill though. Right now, fighting strong guys 1v1 and defeating them hasn't been the point of the story, except for Luffy vs. Katakuri which took a bit of setup. Right now the goal is to evade Big Mom long enough for Sanji to feed her the cake. The Big Mom Pirates aren't a crew the Straw Hats can go toe to toe with.
That being said, though, all the groups are gonna converge out at sea to feed Big Mom. Now that Sanji and the cake are at sea, why not now? So if the Thousand Sunny stays here, Carrot gets more time in the fighting spotlight and maybe other characters do too.

There's quite a bit of cultures that have myths where rabbits are connected to the moon.
-
So where did Luffy dropped Brulee?
And when the cannonballs started to go wherever they wanted now? with Lin Lin on rampage at least 10 hours, are basically my questions.
Katakuri doing the Neo's move <3 Nice chapter! only for this… Carrot doesn't matter to me, more than a new pet.
Oh! a wild Rumble Ball appeared too!

I completely agree. What the hell good is that if it's only available during full moons? But it certainly seems relevant to why Chopper becomes a monster when manipulating his physiology with Rumble Balls, like unlocking a genetic potential that all wild animals have but which the Minks have active and other animals only possess it regressively.
And those cannonballs totally reminded me of the talking bullets from Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Just as dumb and ineffective, played for laughs. Pekoms isn't dead so I'm surprised he hasn't shown back up yet as a Su Long (presumably his wounds would have healed very quickly and completely as a result), and either declared for certain that he's sticking with Big Mom or if he's repaying his debt to the Straw Hats even if it kills him. But I think it would be cool if he took on Tamago, since that guy seems more powerful than I would have imagined. It seems like both of them have very defensive-power oriented abilities so to see who would 'crack' first would be fascinating.
I see no reason why Chopper and Carrot can't simply tag-team while they're kicking ass and taking names. There's enough big names on Big Mom's crew for them to share in a hard-won victory.
-
So yeah, Luffy/Katakuri break was really just a pointless padding. And what was the point of the scene again? Is Oda afraid of having two chapters without Luffy in a row now? And I'm really not a fan of introducing new characters now. I'll withhold my judgment on Carrot SSJ3 until this portion of an arc ends, but I really wish Oda introduced her mentor/student relationship with Pedro before his "death". BM losing weight is interesting and cannonballs were fun on the positive side of the spectrum.
Pointless ??
So you didn’t notice katakuri didn’t dodge the way he used to. It’s show he definitely weakened
-
So Luffy is back to the the mirrors. Good for him.
The Strawhats are now consistantly than everyone behind them. I guess that could buy them to meet Sanji. What's up with Big Mom shrinking. Maybe being lighter will let her move faster?
Considering the first page of transformation I expected a more visual/bestial transformation. It's fine but it's so sleek I find it boring.
Weird ending. I mean she took one boat not the whole fleet.
-
Pointless ??

What's the point in needing a power-up when the foe is weakening?? That is pointless.
Mah boi Kata D. Kuri just shows that with only one waist move can avoid a stupid ranting.

I don’t know and I don’t care.
Just to point out how the first 2 page really means.

Sometimes I wonder which manga people are reading when they post here.
Luffy's last bubble on https://img.mangastream.com/cdn/manga/51/4719/191.png already talked about Katakuri's power weakening due to his power getting used up.
Also I wonder where the idea that Katakuri was avoiding a "ranting" came from.
Getting twilight zone up in here. -

Yes, pointless. He's already been seen dodging not by moving mochi when Luffy originally attacked him with Gear 2. And when he was agitated he couldn't dodge at all. Also I don't see how one way of dodging would be the preferred one.
-

Getting twilight zone up in here.I'm reading Jamini version, man. Not gonna open that link xDD
So, i can only affirm you that the only thing that doesn't last is Katakuri's CoO.
You're very square-minded too, obviously was referring to the shit of "I came to win" - How do you win by violence? - In which manga all the techniques are used with a certain title to them?
Hope you can link the rest ^^Ok, Pasta-kun. Can't say anymore if you're being honest D:
-
Inb4 BM will lose weight every chapter until she will have a slim, nami like body….and face too.
-
Didn't Luffy just gave Katakuri time to regain his Haki based on the last chapter?
-
@Shobu:
What's the point in needing a power-up when the foe is weakening?? That is pointless.
But Katakuri isn't weakening from a stamina point. Luffy clearly specified that he didn't want to tire Katakuri out, he wanted to fight him at full power.
Yes, pointless. He's already been seen dodging not by moving mochi when Luffy originally attacked him with Gear 2. And when he was agitated he couldn't dodge at all. Also I don't see how one way of dodging would be the preferred one.
I think it is worth noting. This time Luffy didn't even use gear second. Not to mention, Katakuri making holes actually gives him more of an advantage than dodging like he did this chapter. With the former, he has trapped Luffy to produce a counter attack. And when he regained his composure, his go to strategy for evading attacks was using holes even against a fast form like gear fourth.
Didn't Luffy just gave Katakuri time to regain his Haki based on the last chapter?
Exactly so Katakuri which has regained his haki and is in a calm state should be able to dodge those three punches, which only seemed to be haki imbued like before.

So how do you guys feel about about a repeat of a starving enemy plot line? Seeing Big Mom with her stomach literally shrinking and growling is leading me to believe that she would actually suffer from real starvation if she doesn't get the cake. I know she tried to eat the giant peanut on Nuts Island but she thought it was the wedding cake. Maybe her one track mind won't allow her to consume anything else until the right food is given.
Judging by Perosperos' reaction he has never seen his mother get thinner from not eating and in all their years this could be something that has never been an issue.
So far the making and protecting of the cake has been too easy to me. When I think about it, both the Straw Hats/allies and the enemies want Linlin to get the cake. Of course the enemy is trying to destroy the the Straw Hats all the while but even though you have guys like Oven making conditions worse for the cake, for the most part everyone wants the cake to make it to Mama. I don't think thats going to work for the narrative.
I'm imagining in the next few chapters Big Mom starts to collapse and look like Luffy when he has no food for long periods. You know, all shriveled up and stuff. Some Straw Hats, allies and maybe even some Charlotte children would be all for letting her die but knowing Sanji and how strongly he upholds Zeff's ideals, how could he let such a thing happen?
This would bring one of those outrageous dilemmas where Luffy lets Sanji take the lead and the consequences be damned. I really want this to happen especially since we were given the whole plan out loud, something needs to go wrong with some zanny twist.
Also as silly and gaggy as it is seems we may learn something about Luffy and Linlin's digestion system. In this arc alone we've had 2 characters comment on how inhuman Luffy's body works when he digests food. Some in silly situations but then look how Nami comments on Luffy's fatness disappearing right before her eyes after the defeat of cracker. As silly as it was back on Whiskey Peak there could actually be some real plot points buried in there.
Onemoment brought this to my attention.

Pekoms is currently working with Tamago and Mont-d'Or overseeing the coordination of the fleets hunting down the Straw Hats. So I'd say he's firmly on Big Mom's side now.

I love this! Now Oda better go this way or I will be disappointed by whatever he comes with.
Also, we've been thinking how BM and her family could forgive the SH for whatever they did, will BM's love for food be enough for her to give them a pass because of how perfect the cake will be? If the SH end up saving her life, things will be different (and will also clean this stain in their reputation for taking part in a murder plot).
And since I still believe there is something to be explained about Linlin's origins, this could be used to offer hints on that as well (to make it clear: I believe Vegapunk lied when he said he never succeeded in gigantification because he wasn't willing to be as unethical as Caesar, and Linlin was the successful result of his experiments).

Don't forget the other part of the cake theory with Big Mom learning about the true nature of Mother Caramel.
