Chapter 877: I'm Not That Sweet
-
Nice. Thabks a lot.
-
The battle-centric chapter was a nice break from what we've been getting so far. Perospero was pretty good, and Katakuri…remains a mystery hehe.
Not sure what to think of Pedro's sacrifice yet. Yeah, it was established as a theme, but hasn't been touched on at all in 20 chapters. Plus, we also came to see Tamago as Pedro's rival, so does the sacrifice have the same effect against someone else? Plus there's the matter that this is One Piece and Pedro might not even be dead. So I guess future events will shape my opinion.
-
Pell-dro .
-
Did I just cry for Pedro ? Oh my gOda.
Pekoms, please! You need to see this through and help the strawhat for you brother !
-
Pedro leaves me cold. His absolute dedication to Luffy and co seems cheap since there is no real explanation for it.
The relationship between Carrot and Pedro should also have been more developed to achieve an impact. -
Woah, Perospero has a 700 Million bounty? I wasn't expecting that at all….. daaam.
-
Woah, 700 million for Perospero. Saboooooooo

More then Sabo ;)

Perospero is more of a threat than Sabo to the WG

-
I really came to like Pedro after his battle against Tamago, but I can't care too much for this sacrifice knowing Oda's way of treating deaths. That's the true downfall of "Pell's effect".
-
After reading the actual chapter I still don't believe he's dead. Reminds me of Law giving his speech about how the Strawhats will win in the end and believing Doflamingo killed him. I also wish Oda had developed Pedro and Carrot's relationship a little more. The words he was saying to her were good, but the execution wasn't there for me.
-

He's severly injured but definitely and most likely out for the arc not dead.
-
More then Sabo ;)
That doesn't make any sense. Dragon is considered the World's worst criminal i.e meaning he has the highest bounty. You'd think his 2nd in command would have something in excess of 1 Billion….or maybe he will one day...
-
Well if Trebol can survive an Allahu Akbar move, im sure Pedro can too.
-
Pretty good chapter, much better than last week.
The only problem was about Pedro: nobody really believes that he sacrificed himself…
Too bad about the break... but it was expected. -
Perospero is more of a threat than Sabo to the WG
Perospero has been around way longer than him.
-
Ok. When this over we need to have an intervention for Pedro. A healthy man doesn't run around with so many explosives or try yo blow himself that often.
Seeing him that commited to Luffy is weird. Even in Jimbei's case at marineford it was based on keeping safe for Ace.
Candyman screwed big time once but he seems to be doing pretty well since then.
-
Pretty cool chapter.
At the end of the day I feel like Oda has given us a decent share of Pedro panel time, and even Perospero has been given more panel time since the wedding, so them both going out ain't that bad. Of course, Luffy's bout with Katakuri was cut real short but we don't know if that's all there is of it or if it will continue next chapter.
That said, a couple issues: the "I'll turn you into candy/candle/a painting and you will die as a result in 3 minutes" is starting to get a bit repetitive by now.
And Pedro's sacrifice was a bit too sudden, I would've prefered if he at least tried to take down Perospero and found it impossible…which is maybe what's supposed to be conveied by Pedro being felled by Peros so easily, but that transition was kinda wonky and sudden, and you don't get the feeling that there was no other option.
Still, all in all, pretty cool. (Btw, is it just me or did Amande's hat shrink a lot?)
-
Perospero has been around way longer than him.
as you mentioned above, it doesnt make sense that the 2nd commander of the revo has that low of a bounty. Not that i care for bounties anyways
-
Do you guys really need a dead body to be sad ? The guy committed suicide for others. Even if he failed to die because One Piece logic, it doesn't take much empathy to imagine the mental state he must have been in before exploding. That alone should give you chills.
-
Perospero feels like a legit threat now. Sure, that "huhuhu my bounty is X" felt forced. But It was still pretty awesome. I was sort of hoping for him to be taken down by Brook, but having him easily dispatch of Brook and Chopper makes him a legit badass. Katakuri bumping heads with Luffy was awesome, of course. I hadn't thought about how similar their abilities were until now.
-
What was with the cover page? I kinda struggled to understand what was going on.

After all of these sacrifices we've seen so far in OP? It hardly feels special. It's like saying we should feel chills every time Luffy mouths off to some big fish. At some point it just happens. And it's not about having a dead body or not. If we didn't know if he died or not, it could be even more emotional. But we know.
-
I certainty don't expect Pedro to die here, but I really do hope Oda follows through and actually has a sacrifice that means something. It would show Luffy he's way in over his head if he thinks he can sneak in and out of a Yonko's territory and come out unscathed. I feel like they've underestimated Big Mom all throughout this arc, and it would be very important to have real consequences before they go into Wano and face Kaido. Then you have the opposite side of the coin, he's fine but injured; that imo would ruin the whole context of this scene. He's had a bad backstory, he only has a few years left to live, he seemed content to sacrifice himself, him being alive would undermine all of that. But knowing how Oda deals with death, I'm sure he's fine.

Baby 5 and Sai meets a very beautiful woman that was Sai's former betrothed :ninja:
-
What was with the cover page? I kinda struggled to understand what was going on.
In Dressrosa, it was revealed that Sai was arranged to marry the muscular girl Uhoricia from another navy, but he decided to reject it and marry Baby 5. Now he'll have to explain things to his former fiancee.
-

We have no confirmation Trebol did survive.
-
Pedro leaves me cold. His absolute dedication to Luffy and co seems cheap since there is no real explanation for it.
The relationship between Carrot and Pedro should also have been more developed to achieve an impact. They saved his people and the Kozuki Clan people also, plus Pedro has something to settle with Big Mom crew, what else do you need?
As for Carrot they probably know each other their whole life, why would she not cry for a friend?(unless she wasn't the kind to do that).
I enjoyed the action this chapter, I hope Pedro(who shares name with me) stays dead so what he did stays meaningful and isn't cheapened, I never liked the fact that Pell showed up alive, but as usual, this is One Piece so he might turn up alive, at least if that happens I hope its someone saving him or whatever not just a miracle survival when he says he is sacrificing himself.
-
Wow…that escalated rather quickly.
-
If he's dead, thats a shame. He'd have made a good crew mate on the StrawHat crew. I really do hope a Mink joins the crew. I still hope for Nekomamushi after the Wano arc ends, seeing as neither of the 2 went to Raftel with Oden. Maybe this time it'll be different.
-
Really good chapter, was excited even though I had read the spoilers originally.
I'm a fan of Perospero, so obviously I was really happy with everything (not surprised by his bounty, since he seems to be as high as the Sweet Commanders in terms of hierarchy in the crew, even if he is not as strong). The ending could worry me, but since this is OP I know he is alive.
And talking about the end, even though I usually think resorting to dramatic moments with supposed deaths in manga where characters don't die (or are always revived) is a cheap waste of time and make me roll my eyes, I thought Pedro sacrifice was really good. We'll sure see Pedro miraculously alive later and I just hope this time Oda gives it a reason instead of "being alive because no one dies" like with Pell and Pagaya, but until we get to that point I hope this actually gives Carrot some substance.
A bit sad for Chopper and Brook being offscreened again, but at least Chopper was left with some dignity (since the candy kept him from changing the shape of his body, we can always wonder if he could actually put up a fight had he entered Monster Point before).
This whole arc I keep feeling Oda is messing up when it comes to conveying the proper feelings (be it in epic or emotional scenes, he always seem to be off either because of build up or paneling), but this time it was spot on.
p.s.: GO UHOLICIA!
-
Pedro's dedication probably didn't have much to do with the SHs themselves initially. He probably joined them to set things straight with the BMPs and use the last of his lifespan to go out with a blast ( literally ). Then again, Pedro was obviously grateful to Luffy and the SHs for saving the minks and Kozuki clan. It's just a shame there wasn't much character there. I think Oda recognised he has reached a dead end with him and decided to cash in on that check.
-
We don't period.
Even if Oda goes for a twist and doesn't resurrect him, it doesn't change the fact that all the other "fakes" make the moment have very little impact (on many people at least). Maybe upon reread this could change. By the way, throughout this arc for many reasons I assumed Pedro to have the biggest chance of death since Marineford, but the chance is still infinitesimal, especially that the actual death got much less time and care dedicated to it than both of Bon Clay's "deaths".
-

Yep, because they had a doctor, not the chosen ones to save the entire world
It´s not about what might be, it´s about building up the relationship for the audience to see, so we can empathize. It´s supposed to be an emotional scene that lacks any impact because it is not developed beforehand.
-

they saved the entire kingdom just last arc..that alone without all the "new dawn" thing would be enough for him to sacrifice himself to save them:blink: -
I feel like people are missing the point with Pedro. Whether he lives or dies doesn't really matter. Even if he surived, he'll be left behind on BM's island and she and her crew will take care of him/take his soul/imprison him. It's the sacrifice that counts.

Nothing screams sacrifice better than lighting your explosives with your own cigarretes.

Too bad about the break... but it was expected.i don't know..people said the same about monet and vergo..and many people still believe they are alive, but i fail to see a point in the story where they could be reintroduced at this point.
i think we can give Oda the benefit of the doubt–- Update From New Post Merge ---

they are supposed to be in a hurry, there was not the time to make a more complete bout between perospero and pedro..not without putting everything else in a bubble
-
I honestly think it'll be better if Pedro dies. Him surviving will kinda undermine his sacrificial act as well as there's no point of surviving since he'll be a prisoner/"killed"(yeah right) by Big Mom's crew.
Great chapter. Too bad Sanji left right before the action, sigh. At least it's better than making Sanji lose again LOL

well that was basically the same for every other sacrifice we saw that ended up in nothing..from pell to pagaya passing to mr 2, all of them would have been better dead to not lessen the impact and instead we got them fine and dandy despite the situation (at best i can understand pagaya surviving since enel's lightinings has been shown to be that deadly at all during the arc, huge damage but people usually survive it.
pell and mr 2 not that much, since both were against something that was already established to be deadly.that being said,i think that using those examples to decide if somone is alive or dead is misleading though..as i said in another post, vergo and monet seem to be dead for good and still some people think they will show up sometime in the story for some reason..which is still possible being this a fictional story, but imho unlikely
-
no explanation?
they saved the entire kingdom just last arc..that alone without all the "new dawn" thing would be enough for him to sacrifice himself to save them:blink:But it´s not because of that. If he would do it as a payback, it would be a somewhat sufficient explanation but he is basically saying "you guys saved us, you are the chosen ones, and that´s why i am sacrificing myself", yeah no…
-
This was one very well paced chapter that just showed how the Straw Hats were utterly overwhelmed and hopeless until that last minute sacrifice. It really made me feel on edge throughout it and I really don't think there was any other way for the crew to escape other than Pedro doing that. Big Mom was readying her Ikoku Sovereignty attack and the enemy fleet had the cannons about to fire already, while the Sunny was stuck in place. There was absolutely no way out other than taking Peros out in a couple of seconds and undo his ability, thus saving Chopper and Brook as well in the process. Oda made Perospero the opposite of Smoothie. Threatening, effective, interesting. His only mistake in the whole arc was to keep trash talking the Vinsmokes at the wedding instead of quickly murdering them, thus allowing for Mama's scream to take everyone out and for Sanji to save his family. He was impeccable for the rest of the arc and I liked how both him and Pedro went out with a literal bang. I liked this development, but my ultimate opinion will depend on how Oda handles the situation in the future. If Pedro stays dead or captured or something seriously bad, it's a fine sacrifice. If he shows up later on like Igaram in Alabasta, then it becomes more debatable. Still, I really liked reading this chapter, Oda earned his break
-
But it´s not because of that. If he would do it as a payback, it would be a somewhat sufficient explanation but he is basically saying "you guys saved us, you are the chosen ones, and that´s why i am sacrificing myself", yeah no…
he already tried to sacrifice himself with those same bombs earlier in the arc did he not?he was saverd through the mirror wordl by the others, but he was satisfied with ending his life there as a decoy
his debt with the strawhats was already enough for him to threw away what little of his life was left after the wheel of big mom, them being in his opinion the "people of the prophecy" was just an add on. -
I love how the crew interacts here. That´s more like the imminent danger they are in. Jimmy fits in perfectly.
Perospero the sadistic candyman talks too much. Pedro on the other hand, doesn´t mess around. Great contrast there. The boom seems to be pretty huge for One Piece standards, even BM can be seen flying off in the last panel.
Pedro´s sacrifice right here and now was very unexpected but it works for me. BM was just about to pulverize them.
The action sequences were cool. The very first when they appear out of the forest with BM behind them was awesome. Also Katakuri calling where gattling hits to become intangible there and then trapping Luffy´s hand in his right forearm to counter-punch with his left was great.
Good chapter.
-
Fans really being ridiculous on how much screen time Pedro needs to have for his death to be meaningful. He has been around and involved for at least 50-60 chapters and a contributing member to the crew, his death does have meaning. If Oda would have showed him more and spent more time flushing him out people would of thought he was going to be a nakama. He already knew he wasn't getting his years back from BM so it only made since for him to sacrifice himself. In saying that I do hope he stays dead, I doubt that explosion is enough to kill Perospero though. With a bounty that high you are bound to have some durability.
Also what is all this talk about needing the background of Pedro and Carrot needing to be fleshed out more, they are lovers. There are two minks that were on the island together, I never got the feeling that they were great friends. I'm sure his death will hurt and sadden her but it's not Ace dying in front of Luffy level of feelings.
-
Good chapter, felt better than last week's; same as many others here: Pedro's sacrifice falls flat on me because a/ it's not even taking place against his arch-enemy - I was at least hoping for a rematch against final-form Tamago b/ One Piece and bombs. Seriously, is his mink nickname Bomberman? The guy resorts to explosives whenever trouble arises… I'm a little sad to see him go, though : as a character he is/was much more interesting than Carrot.
Perospero is full of surprises. I thought he was going to be powerless like Brulée in close quarters, didn't expect him to make short work of a top tier mink warrior. His candy lock feels kinda cheated, though: it should serve to hype him, but 800 chapters in I'm mostly disappointed that Chopper and Brooks are still so vulnerable against some Mr 3-style paralysis move.
-
Greatt chapter….
So katakuri elasticity mochi punch can match rubber lolRip pedro..injury during jack attack..taken lifespan...losing eye and comrades..now suicidal..
I believe perospero still alive with that bounty 700mil..
Maybe nekomishi and marco coming?
