@Long:
I see your point but idk if combining them would be that great of a villain either.
Where's Wapol if you need him?

Uhhh I didnt really like wapol as a threat, dude was a card and could still be an asshole but you'd need someone more threatning than him for enies lobby

I meant for combining Lucci and Spandam.
I meant for combining Lucci and Spandam.
Damn it my mistake thats actually pretty funny.
Need to find an artist who would do that.
Lucci with black hair, a gray suit, hair that's pink, with funkfreed and spandams nose and mask.
I like Lucci's simplicity next to most other one piece villains. I don't like him better, but there's very clearly a place for him and villains like him. I enjoy all of CP9. Especially after watching it recently with my girlfriend.
Just finished reading my copy of ONE PIECE Magazine 2. Perhaps I'll post more info in the future …
Oda "There are ton of new characters I want to draw in Wano arc. Characters in ONE PIECE fight mostly on land despite them being pirates.
I'd like to draw some event scenes on the sea which reminds us that they are pirates. Maybe I'll change my mind, though (laugh)"
When Kuma was introduced for the first time in 2002, Oda told one of his assistants that Kuma would cause the separation of Straw Hats in the future. It came true in 2008.
Oda talked about Rakugo a lot in the interview.

Oh no you don't, Oda. You can't get away with teasing us on that and not delivering.
And for that long? Cool.
Wow, I like to know about the Wano and the Straw Hat's Separation
Thanks so much Sandman :)
@Count:
Oh no you don't, Oda. You can't get away with teasing us on that and not delivering.
And for that long? Cool.
Just my sentiment. If i have any wishes regarding battles, then it is to see a real battle on sea. I mean not in the traditional cannon way but for example Shanks´ crew sinking the Marine fleet was probably a pretty cool battle, something along those lines.
Jinbei joining is just begging for more maritime battles
we have a dedicated water specialist! It's so obvious

I thought about this just the other day. I'd love to see some intense battles on the open ocean!
Thank you for the info, sandman
Let's hope the "ton of new characters" get Dressrosa treatment and not WCI arc side characters
- When Kuma was introduced for the first time in 2002, Oda told one of his assistants that Kuma would cause the separation of Straw Hats in the future. It came true in 2008.
Hohooo! I heard that from the horse's mouth! He didn't name the assistant, did he?
@Long:
He was a professional with a bloodlust streak, not super compelling but he was all business and didnt fuck around. Even still he had probaly the most respect for luffy of most antagonists and didnt like spandam getting off on beating robin
And that's one of the few reasons why I like him so much. Say what you all want about Lucci as an overall character, but I find him as one of the most enjoyable fighters to watch in battle. :)
. Characters in ONE PIECE fight mostly on land despite them being pirates.

Always something i kind of missed in OP, but it might come true.

Here is my summary for ONE PIECE Magazine volume 2 except for Ace novel and editors' short interview.
After becoming a mangaka, Oda noticed that his imagination ability of creating various stories is based on Rakugo, Japanese verbal entertainment.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rakugo
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%E8%90%BD%E8%AA%9E
Oda has been enjoying Rakugo ever since he was in elementary school. When Oda's friends in junior high school came to his house,
he played a cassette tape of Rakugo to entertain them, but all of them got bored in 5 minutes.
Oda started listening to Rakugo since his parents enjoyed Rakugo via cassette tapes. On the other hand, his elder sister didn't get attracted to it.
He even listened to Rakugo right before sleeping. Oda remembers he was an elementary school kid who fell into asleep thanks to middle-aged man's voice.lol
When Oda was around 12/13 years old, he was very glad that his parents kindly bought a ticket for Rakugo show in Kumamoto for his birthday present.
Oda meets Kosanji Yanagiya, one of the best Rakugo performer, once a year in Studio Ghibli. Toshio Suzuki, producer of Ghibli, invites Oda to his Rakugo event every year.
Oda believes he has never run out of ideas about ONE PIECE story because he knows a lot about classic Rakugo/film/Jidaigeki which survived the test of time.
Oda devoted himself to watching films in high school/college days. He watched 3 films per day. He got bored with current films soon and started focusing on classics.
Oda thinks perhaps the sound effect "Don!!" (ドン!!) in ONE PIECE is based on actors' overacting in classic Jidaigeki.
Oda says he wants his audience to pay attention to the "Don!!" panel.
Oda considers a good sense of rhythm about words is important when creating sentences in ONE PIECE although he doesn't read many books.
Oda sometimes keeps in mind that he should write sentences in 5-7-5 Japanese traditional poetic Haiku form.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haiku
The person Oda wants to meet most now is Quentin Tarantino. Oda also says that he has already met most of the people whom he wants to.
Oda at the age of 3-6 resolved to become a mangaka since he can make a living via drawing manga every day.
Oda thought he would easily become the best mangaka since he had been confident of his drawing technique, but
he noticed that he needed to learn creating an interesting story when he was around 17 years old.
Oda was not convinced when his art teacher in junior high school didn't give the best grade to his good Toriyama-ish dragon drawing.
Oda says he thought there was no difference between manga and art.
Before Oda became a professional mangaka, his editor often advised him to create well-defined manga characters.
Some people even criticized that Luffy in "Romance Dawn" (prototype for ONE PIECE) didn't seem to move on its own.
Oda says that himself didn't fully grasp the personality of Luffy at that time.
Oda remembers he was a rude person without knowing it before his debut as a professional mangaka.
He talked to a legendary mangaka (HIroshi Motomiya) too casually in a party, which made staffs upset.
Oda keeps in mind that he should make funny and casual comments in SBS. Oda in childhood had read mangaka talking about their hardships in
creating manga in author's comments. He made up his mind that he wouldn't write such a comment since [he considers audience wouldn't understand it
no matter how mangaka talks about their hardships in detail.
Bandai company plans to sell OP goods based on SBS drawings of gender-bent/childhood characters although Oda just wants to draw them just for fun.
Oda says he'd like to keep being "a friendly funny guy in neighborhood" for kids who feels free to answer their requests to make drawings in SBS.
Oda also says his drawings are not something very valuable. He says he is not a kind of mangaka who considers himself, "Even one line drawn by me can make much money!"
Oda "Be sure to look forward to Wano country. I refrain from revealing when I draw it, though."
Oda "There are tons of new characters I want to draw in Wano arc. Characters in ONE PIECE fight mostly on land despite them being pirates.

The drawings of Amaru Enel are based on a elephant.
There are some supplements (vitamin, turmeric, ornithine and forskohlii) and Red Bull on Oda's desk…
Oda is getting excited and doesn't eat food near the deadline for submitting manuscripts. Oda says food would make him sleepy.
On the other hand, his assistants are getting exhausted near the deadline.
3 assistants have been working under Oda for more than 15 years.
Oda had nearly 30 options for Rebecca's name. (Shalom, Violet, Russian, Akiria, Girasole, Laura, Helianthus,
Seneca, Juvenalis, Noir, Vineyard, Iris, Amazonia, Lambda, Isbell and Fabula etc..)
The text says Shalom means peace in Hebrew and some other options mean sunflower in different languages.
There is an impressive line Oda didn't use in Enies Lobby arc.
Luffy "Robin! Keep laughing! There's nothing to be afraid of! I'm with you!!"
Robin sheds tears remembering Saul's words "Laugh when you are in hardships!! Dereshishishi"[hide]
[/hide]
Hohooo! I heard that from the horse's mouth! He didn't name the assistant, did he?
Good to hear that. Actually it was revealed by Ei Andou himself in "Eyes of Eiichiro's staffs" manga :)
Interesting that he did use two of the name ideas for Rebecca in the Dressrosa Arc as well.
Wow, that Enies Lobby line, while also being cheesy, would have been surely effective

@Don:

Technically the Baroque Works agents were all bounty hunters. I know where you're going at, but I'm not sure how engaging it'd be if the hunter is only going after bounty.
- Oda "Be sure to look forward to Wano country. I refrain from revealing when I draw it, though."
I think this is a pretty big hint by the author himself that he underestimated Totland's length and that the "Wano in 2017" announcement isn't going to be fulfilled.
And I think this is good. So Totland's end isn't rushed and we will have time for the Reverie.
Hmm, there's nothing translated of Motomiya, i didn't know him.
Oda and Quentin, yeah, those two know their ways with words.
Thx Sandman ;)

We had with Don Chinjao in fillers already something i wish the manga would show us one day.
A bounty hunter going after the big bounties (not yonkou), who could have a rivalry with Luffy over the rest of the series.
I would also not see such a character as an arc boss, but more a side event, who tries to trick Luffy and maybe even manages to capture him, which forces the SHs to rescue their captain. (but that would mean downgrading Luffy in a certain way, so it could be handled differently)
All in all i just wish the bounties have more relevance (especially those higher sums), where it now seems only admirals could actually go for bounties higher than 500million and everything higher than this is just arbitrary, cause no characters exists beside marines/WG who could claim that money.
All other strong guys are wanted themselves.
But the draft of the new admirals during the TS made me hope again, that their are actually other really strong characters around, who aren´t involved with the WG/marine or are pirates, soooo yeah some kickass bounty hunters who go for big money would be cool to see, especially in the NW.
Well the shichibukai are like a part bounty/pirate hunter

Maybe, but I can't see a guy who just wants money as anything particularly impactful, especially at this part in the story. And bounties have always been seen as power statuses, even in-universe. It was pretty telling when Oda offscreened the Straw Hats getting onslaughted by bounty hunters on Sabaody, and how little weight that ended up having compared to the slavery stuff that was dealt with later in the arc. Oda doesn't seem to be a fan of traditional rivalries, as seen with Smoker. Whether you like that or not is up to you, but I like how his character is handled by giving him more things to do than just go after Luffy.

Yeah, these are pretty much my thoughts as well. I think that Oda could have written an efficient bounty hunter antagonist out of Alabasta if he wanted to, but he just doesn't care. And especially this late in the game, a bounty hunter character needs to contribute more than only hunting Luffy down because that's a boring one-dimensional goal that doesn't add much to worldbuilding. Especially one that could actually be competitive in the New World. The same really goes for rival characters in general for Luffy. They need to have something more long term and grand when it comes to their goals, such as Blackbeard's whole rise to power. Or at least some effective character development that makes their role in the story emotionally investing and have their relationship with Luffy become more dynamic. Sort of like Bellamy, but if we was actually a recurring character and we saw him become a better person on-panel. Otherwise, a bounty hunter/rival character only ends up being repetitively ineffective and practically fluff in the scope of the arc besides minor worldbuilding like Smoker was in Alabasta. He could have been removed from that arc and literally nothing changes about it besides learning how the Gorosei wanted to cover up shenanigans that make them look bad.
Back to the subject of bounty hunters though, I think that if Oda wanted to, post-timeskip Kuzan could have been one a bounty hunter. A former Admiral is a great way to allow a bounty hunter to be a reasonable threat in the New World. He has history with the Straw Hats as an intimidating neutral/anti-hero figure that makes him feel like a suspenseful "unpredictable" character that would be a big wild card in any arc he's in. Kuzan has a lot of prominence in the scope of the world too, and presumably has some sort of goal in mind, so this allows him to contribute more to the plot instead of ONLY chasing down Luffy. He could eventually ally with Blackbeard too, but it would be built-up rather than an off-panel development over the timeskip. But that would require Oda to make him appear in at least one arc by this point in the same style that Fujitora, Sabo, and Burgess appeared on Dressrosa. And he doesn't appear to be comfortable with playing that card yet.
I thought oda read alot of books? I think I remember reading something about how he reads.
Other than the interview in OP Magazine, Oda said in 1998 that basically he didn't read novels since he was not good at reading many texts.
He read some samurai novels such as "Moeyo Ken" his friends recommended, though.

Editor Naito and Sugita's small talk show was held on August 5th.
According to participant's tweet, staffs told the audience not to post information revealed in the talk show on the internet/social networking service.
I wonder if the editors revealed some juicy info..
By the way, another ONE PIECE event called Grand Talk Show will be held in Cafe Mugiwara in Tokyo Tower on August 23rd.
Editor Asada, Habuta, Kawashima, Onishi, Isaka, Sugita and Naito will make an appearance.
We have to win a lottery to participate in the event…

Well, it´s Oda we´re talking about, iam sure he would come up with something that backs up the fact that the character hunts for bounties.
A long time rivalry i also think ain´t a possibility anymore, so yeah the chances of Oda introducing a big time BH are as low as always :)
- Oda devoted himself to watching films in high school/college days. He watched 3 films per day. He got bored with current films soon and started focusing on classics.
lol, I used to watch 10films a day when in highschool.
One thing I DO hope for, is for Grount from the last filler arc to return in more filler arcs. He has an interesting unexplained power that Oda helped create, and could be a pretty good rival character in an appropriate setting.
Wonder what is it about Japanese Jidegeki and Rokugen.(sorry for mispelling)
That helps gives him ideas. Where he says hes not worried running out of them. Because of those two things?

Man, I should get that cough checked out by a doctor.
ONE PIECE editor Naito revealed in a talk show on August 5th that Wano arc will be the most amazing arc ever since Marineford Summit War arc.
Not like he could say much else. "Wano will be okay, I guess."
I'm sure it'll be good, but I can't get excited from empty hype like that. If anything it just turns me off.
They keep hyping the shit out of Wano. Let's hope it doesn't end up as Dressrosa 2.0
Lies. He couldn't possibly know that.
Of course, Wano will be awesome. As unlike Dressrosa or Totland it will be the end of a saga and therefore being way more climactic in general. Unless Oda heavily fails to harvest the payoffs properly (which I really see no reason why he should), Wano basically instantly is predestined to be absolutely awesome.
so does it mean one piece was boring since marineford :-)
As an aside note, I forgot how surprisingly short Marineford was at only 30 chapters.

If only Wano could be 30 chapters…or shorter than what I'm fearing.
Can't help but shake the feeling of Dressrosa 2.0.

I would say it will likely be about 50 chapters, same as WCI, but unless there's something big that affects the world balance besides Kaido's defeat, I wouldn't imagine it'll got as long as Dressrosa.
It would be impossible to make Wano satisfying in merely 30 chapters.
Anyway, lenght of the arc isn't really the problem here. Oda cutting corners and focusing on wrong things is.

Wano is definitely gonna be a lot longer than WCI, if for nothing else then because of the amount of characters that will be present in that arc. Here we only have half of the SH and (part of) Big Mom's crew. In Wano we'll have the entire SH crew (+ Law's crew) + Kidd, Apoo, Hawkins (and probably their crews), all SH allies (minks, samurais, Marco and whatever remained of the WB crew etc.) and then we have Kaido and his crew plus the shogun and whatever friends/allies he has. Actually I doubt that it's gonna be a lot shorter than Dressrosa and considering the scale of the arc it could easily be even longer than Dressrosa
Marineford was pretty short because most of its characters were out of focus and had few decisive moments - all the focus was on Luffy and Ace. That won't be the case here.
Wano is going to have a lot of characters and a lot of chapters like Dressrosa. But unlike Dressrosa, we'll hopefully have a more unified plotline with fewer subplots that drag off into the distance, plus most of the characters will likely be established instead of new. So I don't see reason to worry based on chapter/character count alone.
