May, uh. I'll give it a watch. I've never watched a Lupin series so I'm looking forward to it. Let's just hope the dub is bearable.
We actually have an entire community of italians in this forum.
Maybe they knew that we have a really huge fanbase for Lupin (thanks to episodes being aired constantly, and to Jigen's beard).

I always wondered, how is Porco Rosso treated over there?
I loved that film.

It… probably isn't going to be dubbed.
Not for many years at the very least.
Lupin hasn't traditionally fared well stateside. A lot of material has been brute force pushed through, mostly due to the iconic status so different companies keep trying to make it work, but...

I think he means in Italian, Robby.
I think they're also worried with the dubs since majority of original Italian Lupin cast are deceased, or so I hear.
I meant italian, yes. I haven't heard the dub for the original series so I can't compare in that regard.

Miyazaki's movies are all well treated, some more than others (Howl for example is probably the most famous one). Porco Rosso is not as famous as Totoro, Howl or Laputa, but it still has its fair amount of hardcore fans since the 90s.

Lupin and Jigen's voices have been replaced recently, the others are fine. I'm not really worried about the dub since for the most part we have great voice actors, except for sasuke's one and others from naruto (the real drama is when they change voices mid-series [or from season to season] in a short time span because the va dies or something else).
It's heeeeeeeere
Love the look. And its a decent remix of the theme.
Excite!
(Fujiko's makeup is a bit much but whatever, its her)
damn that looks awesome. excitement rising
It's heeeeeeeere
Gotta say, that music really got the nostalgia pumping. The non-CG art looked really nice too!
I keep rewatching the preview everywhere I see it reposted. It's just that good. Music alone immediately sells it to me. But the visual style is great too, mainly drawing inspiration from the earliest series, but adding the sketchy lineart of the Koike run to it.
And it will never get unfunny that Moemon wears a funeral kimono even to a wedding.
If the preview shows off the first episode, it seems to be about the fake wedding of Lupin and the twintail blonde. That ought to be fun.
In anticipation I'm trying to finish watching of the handful of tv movies I still haven't seen even after all this time. (I've manages about 30 out of 34)
Seven Day Rhapsody was pretty decent, but Elusive Fog was awful, one of the worst ones they've done. I have nothing against a change of pace but timetravel really shouldn't be a Lupin thing (nor space aliens) it just always feels weird when they get too out there. It'd be forigven if they'd done anything clever like meeting their ancestors or the original historical Zenigata that uses yen coins or something…. but nope. They just had a Fujiko replacement and called it a day, nothing clever or fun at all... and the villain was reeeeally dumb. It wasn't downright insultingly bad like some of the worst movies, they put some decent effort into it, but it was just... not good.
Now I need to rewatch the vs. Conan movie so that I can then watch the sequel movie sinc eit apparently makes direct reference to it at some point... and its been long enough
So how does this works? There are different continuities or it follows a linear pattern?
So how does this works? There are different continuities or it follows a linear pattern?
There's no real continuity even between capers. There's a vague conceit that the red jacket series took place 5 years after the green jacket series, and that Castle of Calgiostro was from pretty late in Lupin's career, but…
For the most part every movie and every episode is a standalone adventure, just using the same cast. (The Fujiko miniseries a couple years ago had a continuity within itself, but doesn't really apply before or after.)
You can vaguely assume that basically everything from the last 40 years has happened in more or less the sequence the stories were told, but...
aside from the actual technology being more dated when the series started (the introduction of laptops and cell phones somewhere along the way and such) there's really nothing pinning anything down really. It's enough to know these guys have been working together a long time and had a lot of capers.
They've had at least 4 different versions of the origin story of "how these characters met", so...
Once in a great while, usually for anniversary specials, there will be a callback to a random villain from years earlier, or a very vague callback to an earlier thing "oh yeah, Lupin has a thing about Mummy curses because of that one time" but it doesn't happen much. They know its a 40 year long franchise with hundreds of episodes and 35 movies, they assume people haven't seen them all.
You could start with any movie or episode and be fine pretty much, though some movies are really good while some are really bad.
Apparently, Elusive Fog is a remake of an original TV series episode. If it's so bad, why did they choose it to be remade. Maybe it was actually popular back then? Anyway, I haven't seen to many of the specials to watch this one anytime soon.

"Elusiveness of The Fog" was definitely not anything to write about but nothing can top "Return of The Magician" in terms of sheer awfulness
There's no real continuity even between capers.
That's good considering if it were Lupin would no longer have a Walther after what happened to his in "Elusiveness Of The Fog".
Apparently, Elusive Fog is a remake of an original TV series episode. If it's so bad, why did they choose it to be remade.
The original episode it was based off of was decent enough as a single episode and with the revelation that Mamou couldn't actually time travel. The special on the otherhand plays it straight and gives Mamou a pretty petty reason to hate Lupin on top of it (not that his motivations in the TV episode was any better written).
Well, Lupin is the closest thing to an "American superhero" franchise.
As in, characters have stories in their respective timeline without actual passage of time, origins being retold multiple times, drawn and written by completely different artists and writers with different personalities, etc.
It's very much like Superman, Batman, and Marvel stuff. How many times did we see origins of Superman again?
That's good considering if it were Lupin would no longer have a Walther after what happened to his in "Elusiveness Of The Fog".
He can always get a new one. He's had at least two!
Sentimental value for the old one aside.
but nothing can top "Return of The Magician" in terms of sheer awfulness
I recall liking that one until near the end.
But no, the worst of the worst are Gold of Babylon (pschadelic drug visuals and space aliens!) and Burn, Zantetsuken! / Dragon of Doom. (Let's build an indestructable plane and fly it into things that specifically cannot be cut! Except it gets cut anyway!)
The Pursuit of Harimao's Treasure and From Russia with Love are both pretty dumb too, mostly due to the awful villains. All of them were just over the top campiness. One of them had a nazi crossdresser running the movie just so they could build to to the pun "Herr Maphrodite".
The Secret of Twilight Gemini I recall not really having the Lupin gang in it at all till near the end.
On the other end of the spectrum, the BEST ones are
Castle of Cagliostro (Its Miyazaki.)
Fuma Conspiracy (Great Goemon story and best car chase in the franchise… makes me extra excited for the new anime because the same people are involved)
Episode 0 (origin story, lots of style)
Napoleon's Dictionary (no big villain, just a racing romp, loits of Lupin and Zenigata)
Walther p-38/Island of Assassins (Good for drama and style, very Cowboy Bbeop)
with honorable mentions to Voyage to Danger (suspence), Tokyo Crisis (Great Zenigata flik), Alcatraz Connection (almost top tier but needed to be 10 or 20 minutes longer)
But no, the worst of the worst are Gold of Babylon (pschadelic drug visuals and space aliens!)
Are you kidding? Babylon's story is nonsensical and a lot of scenes are obnoxious but at least the animation is fun and way, way more interesting/dynamic than that of most TV specials (like The Last Job or Princess of the Breeze; yuck). Pink Jacket in general is actually not that bad, you can read about its production here.
I think The Mystery of Mamo might actually be my favorite flick along with The Castle of Cagliostro. Shoot me. Also there's a new BD of the latter film out.

Watched the new bluray last night, best the film's ever looked in the west. Dunno if it's based off the new transfer Ghibli supposedly did though. Streamline dub is awesome as ever
Oh yeah, I got the Cagliostro blu ray the other day as well. Immediately watched it, was great all over again. Finslaly saw the Streamline dub for the first time. (i've had the tape for a decade but no vcr to play it) It really is very good, but I know the movie by heart so well, the few bits where they go "off script", particularly the "i'm a thief here to rescue you" bit, were kind of jarring to me… but the dub was indeed good. The newer dub may have been more accurate, but the actors weren't as fun.
Someday I might watch the storyboard edition or the early first run subtitles... but its a movie I love so much I try not to overwatch it and keep it to maybe once a year, so that it remains fresh at least a little.
One detail I never picked up on before (probably the new quality) is near the end, , when Lupin is being carted around by Jigen and Goemon and is trying to be all menacing and scary... Jigen has really gotten into the act, as he is sporting a pair of fangs! What a wacky little detail.
I've been wondering, what do you even call the music in Green Jacket? What genre is it?
(The lyrics for Nice Guy always give me a smile. So delightfully corny)

Groovy is one word I'd use.
Just stopping by to say I love Lupin, Lupin… he's a nice man. He's a groovy guy, as the song says. The whole gang owns, Fujiko owns, it is one big nonstop ownage train this franchise.

It's a mixture of jazz, soul, and some other stuff.

Yeah, I watched the streamline dub with the accurate subs out of curiosity and saw the difference with how Lupin portrays himself towards Clarisse. I'm just glad I can watch it as I did as a kid (original uk vhs release used streamline) without having to forego anything else. With the DVD release I had to import from australia because the uk ones only had the hayter dub. When I first saw that - as I'd been so used to streamline - the difference was, as you say, jarring.
Another thing I noticed was with the lip flaps. Streamline tended to move around what was said so they could be hyper accurate towards when people were speaking, which was a nice touch. Watching with the subs on was also interesting as it showed an issue with the hayter dub too - the new hyper accurate subs on the discotek release call the counterfeit money "gothic", as opposed to the hayter dub's "goat bills". Which is ironic as the term "goat bills" was one of the few terms I liked in the hayter dub (I always assumed it was shorthand for superb fakes, as caliostro's heraldry crest has goats on it and he made the best funny money).
You always watch the streamline dub. Watching any other version is just plain wrong.
It would be like not watching the English dub of the red jacket series.
I agree
took me a looooooooong time to stop automatically calling him Wolf. Was pretty cool how zenigata would often call him the wolf as well.
Calling him anything other than Lupin is sacrilege. Infidels.
Might as well piss on Maurice Leblanc's grave and Monkey Punch's face!
Mediaset have confirmed the release date: first episode comes on August 29th.
Viva Rupan!
Honestly I have mixed feelings about the Red Jacket dub. I really like the voices of Lupin, Jigen (based Richard Epcar) and Fujiko, but Goemon sounds more bored than stoic and a Texan accent isn't really what I pictured Zenigata to sound like. I feel that the dialogue often strays way too far from the subs as well. But on the other hand, it's corny and fun and fits the tone of the show really well.

Sweet. I really like what we've seen so far. I wish it was set in the 60s/70s because that's when Lupin is "supposed to be" set for me. But it looks really fun and has cartoony animation - like Lupin should have.
I've only ever watched the Japanese version of Cagliostro…the English dub that I think was on my DVD was the one full of profanity, which I didn't really dig.
I'd say it's worth owning the bluray, it's a great movie.

Its been a long time since I watched that dub (I usually go subs) but for all the complaints it gets about that… I don't recall it actually having much swearing? A few "damns" or "craps" maybe? Not appropriate for the film maybe, but certainly no hard cursing that I found overly distracting.
Maybe I'm just totally mis-remembering though.

I'm the other way. I read the original subtitles and think what kind of barebones shit is this.
No Shaq references? No terrible puns? This is just the bare minimum of dialogue.

I didn't watch the whole thing…maybe they squeezed most of it into the beginning of the movie. :) I just thought it was so bad (the dub in general, not the language) that I immediately switched to subs.

Oh god the pain, it's flaring up again.
So…When is this new Blue Jacket series starting? If it hasn't started already?

-Never call a game when Reggie Miller or Lupin is on the floor.
-Yeah but now days they've got instant replay and i don't care what the purists say, it's a good thing y'know.
Just behold this glorious dialogue. The original was some boring malarky about a microfilm, but this, this is great.

As it said just a few posts up, August 29 ;)
You always watch the streamline dub. Watching any other version is just plain wrong.
It would be like not watching the English dub of the red jacket series.
But the manga dub was more accurate and remembered the importance of silence and atmosphere that Miyazaki had in the original.
Also the streamline dub ruined the magic of the scene when Lupin snuck into Clarrises tower and gave her the hope she needed right when she needed it by making Lupin's dialogue less majestic and too blunt. Plus there was too much added talking in general. That was my favorite scene in the entire movie and messing that up automatically made me prefer Manga.

Ahh, I thought that was referring to the Itallian Dub that was being discussed a few posts before.
I guess now that I look at it, I can see how it's confusing - I had seen another blog saying it's premiering that day, but it's just for Italy - I don't know if it's being premiered at the same time as Japan or not, animenewsnetwork says it will premier "in the fall". So I guess nothing is certain at this point.
The Italian version of the International Business Times has announced that the new blue jacket show will get an initial air date of August 29th in Italy!
The article, posted on the official International Business Times website, goes on to mention that the show will début on channel Italia 1 and will air on each Saturday evening after the 29th. It’s said that the show will run for a total of 26 episodes, each 30 minutes in length.
We’re treating this one as a rumour for the time being. Why? There’s some conflicting information here regarding the channel of which the show is to air on. While the International Business Times is reporting it will show on Italia 1, a recent newspaper article said it was to show on Boing.
The Italian opening is out. But if you watch it, turn the sound off because it's basically 4Kids rap in Italian.

BTW, a question to Italians in this thread:
There seems to be general dislike of that Moreno guy who performs the Italian op.
Like, Italian Lupin fans are running petitions to have him removed from the op.
What's all that about? Just curious.
