I literally do not remember what Conis did at all…:ninja:
Love and Loathe 2: Return of the Analysis
-
-
Love: despite being looking like a dainty tour guide at the start, Conis goes through some serious stuff. She's wracked over guilt when the crab comes to capture the Merry (with Zoro, Robin, Chopper, and Nami) aboard and helps Luffy, Sanji, and Usopp get them back.
The people of Skypiea throw rocks at her when she tries to warn them about Eneru's wrath.and she's voiced by Laura BaileyLoathe: Not really "loathe" but maybe her design could've had more pop. And didn't do as much in the arc when compared to the other SH allies: Wiper and Aisa.
looks - 3/5
character - 3/5 -
??
Mind explaining your point?
Princess or not, it's not hard to make a character more *interesting by adding some quirk.
Viola was a princess & she was incredibly bland…I was just trying to get into Oda's mind. But even then, yeah, he could have given her a more interesting personality.
-
Conis:
Love: As mentioned before by other people, Conis played a typical "Damsel in distress/Luffy's female friend In need of physical and mental salvation" type of character, but, in my opinion at least, it was one of the few cases when this type of character was done right. If we compare Conis to Nami and Vivi, both of whom played basically the exact same roles in the arcs prior to Skypiea Conis seemed fairly… unimportant. Not much was expected from her, as she wasn't even close to the degrees of attachment that Nami and Vivi had to the crew. But to my surprise, I came to enjoy the character quite a bit.
I liked her development throughout the arc. She went from a scared law abiding citizen to a brave heroic young lady who was ready to sacrifice her life going against the very laws that she was so afraid of at the start of the arc, without hesitation. All to save the lives of other Skypiea citizens. The bazooka&White Berets scene was very powerful for me (if only Rebecca had a scene like that, smh), and that scene pretty much solidified Conis as a likable character in my eyes.
I also kind of enjoyed the gag of Conis and Pagaya being pretty ignorant of their own loud presence.Loathe: There isn't really much to loathe in this case… Conis was a character for one arc basically. She didn't leave much room for further plot relevance, nor does she feel like a memorable ally/unofficial crewmate type of character. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, characters like this are what make up 50% of the story after all.
Other than that I would say that she has a pretty bland design, but that's attributable to the population of the Angel Island as a whole.Character - 3/5. I liked her, she fulfilled her role splendidly but isn't memorable enough to score her higher in my book.
Design - 2/5. Bland. Can't say more about It tbh. -
Love: There is not much to say about her since she's such a minor character. Not even really that central to the plot of Skypiea either, but despite that, I think she went through a pretty considerable and interesting arc. I think her going from just guide girl of the island ( who's role has become increasingly troped since then ), to revealing her betrayal, but also showing her severe regret, to eventually really take control of the situation in a great display of stoicism and badassery. Once she comes back to the Island with the Bazooka and start ordering fools around, I think her character really established itself as about as interesting as she could be. To compare this to other female characters of similiar stock, I think Conis beats both Rebecca and Shirahoshi, despite having about 1/4th of the former and maybe 1/10th of the latters screentime. She not only develops, but also manages to do what she intends to do. Which is all you can really ask for, from such a minor character.
Loathe: There isn't really anything to loath, but ultimately there wasn't anything really memorable about her. Probably has a lot to do with her short time on the screen and that's kind of the point: the role she filled is usually larger ( for better or worse ). And I guess people say unmemorability is even worse than being flat out bad, but I disagree, I'd rather have 100 Conises every arc than have a single Rebecca in one.
Character - 3/5. For what it is, I think she's decent.
Design - 2.5/5. I mean, there isn't really much to say, pretty run on the mill. Every character doesn't need to be incredibly weirdlooking. -
Love: The only things I like about Conis are her design and her warning the Skypieans of Enel. Absolutely nothing else.
Loathe: Apart from the aforementioned redeeming moment, she is bland and exists only for exposition purposes. She is not at all memorable. She is the standard token female of the arc; albeit the worst one. Even Rebecca is a better character than her.
Character: 2/5
Design: 3/5 -
This evaluation might contain lots of bias since Skypiea is my favourite arc ever and I tend to view almost everything in that arc as subjectively good.
Love: Conis was a character that I didn't expect much from, but what I got was surprisingly rewarding. Compared to the major arc that came before (Alabasta) that had Vivi, who bonded through about a hundred of chapters with the crew, Conis felt just… there. Yet her actions throughout the arc, despite paling in comparison of the more major events that transpired cemented my opinion of her as a high tier 'island tour guide' character.
- it was nice to see just a quiet little family living in the clouds. Oda clearly put a respectable amount of effort in showing the lifestyle of the Skypieans which I enjoyed reading.
- turned from selling out the SHs in the fear of the safety of her family, to straight up refusing to acknowledge Enel as a God, and doing her best to save her fellow citizens which cements her as a great minor character.
- knows how to handle a bazooka.
Loathe: all and all, she's still just a minor character.
Character: 3.5/5 (probably lower if she wasn't in this particular arc)
Design: 3/5 - she does have a rather unique facial structure, plus the antenna and wings are a nice touch.
-
I thought I had strong opinions on each character in One Piece, but even Farul, Cavendish's horse made more of an impression on me than Conis…
Love: The Bazooka scene is very much THE scene for Conis. A very nice moment showing some development for her as a person, and one of the most memorable she had...
Loathe: But unfortunately she's just pretty forgettable. I struggle at the best of times about the Skypian adventure and it's people, but Conis is a special kind of "meh".
She's not the worst character from the arc, but she's not as memorable as Eneru, Wiper, Gan Fall, Gedatsu or even Norland and Calgara either.
Had Conis had been the 'guide' character in an earlier arc, she'd probably have struck more of a chord, but after the likes of Zoro's wacky bounty hunter brothers, Nami's no nonsense sister, Norland's ancestor who never stopped dreaming about the city of gold, the boy who is eventually destined to become Luffy's marine rival and of course the gutsy Princess and her even gutsier duck steed, Conis feels a little overshadowed and bland comparitively.Character: 1.5/5 A little too bland to leave much impression, and by that point Oda proved he could do guide characters incredibly well.
Design: 2.5/5 She's alright, her design isn't bad per say, but a more interesting design alone could have greatly improved her memorability. -
Love:
Her little arc is nice and serves its purpose.
The emotional beats of said arc are done well.
Loathe:
Nothing I really hate, she just isn't as memorable as most other characters. A lot of side characters from Skypiea suffer from this.
Character: 3 out of 5; Perfectly serviceable character arc.
Design: 3 out of 5; Bland but not ugly in any way. -

Is this thread gonna get updated?
-
Yeah, soon…was just a bit disheartened by the little responses. Meanwhile the hint: This character has maybe the most literal name in the series.
-
Well Baron Tamago is as literal as it gets. But isn't it a bit early for him?
-
There is Smoker. Has Smoker been done it?
-
Yeah, soon…was just a bit disheartened by the little responses. Meanwhile the hint: This character has maybe the most literal name in the series.
Conis was probably not the best choice if you expected an overwhelming response. Anyway I'll be here as often as I can anyway, don't give up! This is an awesome thread.

Dalmation? With his devil fruit powers of…being a dalmation?

Conis's Arlong Park Evaluation
The most commonly loved thing about Conis:
- Warning the Citizen – Conis had a great badass scene where she warned Skypea's citizens of Enel's plan, armed with a bazooka and a hell lot of determination. Here she showed her resolve which she built up throughout the arc and came into her own.
The most commonly loathed thing about Conis:
- Forgettable - She was the token guide character in Skypea and didn't make much of a memorable impact. She isn't very quirky or anything and plays the typical female damsel in distress a bit, which overall make her seem rather bland.
In the end Conis got:
-
the weakest score yet with 2.56 for her character
-
and a not much higher 2.63 in terms of design. Ouch!
Thanks for all the responses! The next character will follow very soon.
-
Ah, I forgot "number, number" and "number.number" switch from the U.S to Europe. ;3

Love and Loathe 2 - #4
He is after Luffy since way back in Logue Town, the first Logia user we ever witnessed: Enter Vice-Admiral Smoker!
To get the whole picture, please tell us the following:
What are the things that you love about Smoker?
What are the things that you loathe about Smoker? At the end please give Smoker two ratings: One for his character & actions in the story. One for his **look & design.
These must be between 1 and 5, with 5 being the highest (.5's are acceptable - ex. 1.5 or 4.5). I will tally these.**
This analysis will be open for the next 72 hours.

@Count:
Smoker's image is broken.
Hm, worked for me, but I used another link now. So hopefully it should be fixed.

It's good now. Thanks.

Love: To put it simple: Smoker is a badass. Not the type of badass that gets annoying because that's everything there is to him and he just becomes a Mary Sue. But if there is one word to describe him; it would be badass. He smokes two cigars for the love of god. TWO. I remember reading One Piece with my dad as a kid and we were both amazed at how cool it is to smoke two cigars. He's also proven he can kick serious ass, with a pretty cool devil fruit ability. But Smoker is also a very likable guy. He's a hero of his own story, a strict man of principle, but with a heart of gold and wellmeaning beneath it all. Like in that awesome moment when he gives the little girl money for the ice cream she spilled on his pants. Then of course the most iconic moment: Having no issues to tell the Gorosei to eat shit. That's kinda bonechilling in all honesty. In all honesty, Smoker is always a blast. Nothing gets worse when Smoker is involved and that is always a good freaking thing.
Loathe: Unfortunately, Smoker is kind of stumped in Punk Hazard. He gets some pretty cool fights, but he just looks bad. Now, he's obviously fighting three very powerful opponents, but he's meant to be one of Luffy's rival. These three fights unfortunately hurt his hype, a lot.
Character: 4 - loses about half a point for the L-streak in Punk Hazard. But still, an awesome character.
Design: 5 - Everything about him is so freaking cool. A hunky, commando-looking dude wearing shades and an open jacket, smoking two cigars. Brilliant. As far as marine character design goes, he's the pinnacle. -
Love: Smoker quickly stood apart even though he's usually just been doing his job ever since his introduction. We saw corrupt Marines, and we saw Marines who embraced both the positive and negative aspects of their position, but Smoker was the first in a line of "reason before honor" Marines, guys who are Marines because they genuinely want to do the right thing but are smart enough to know that even they aren't perfect. Smoker had an amazing first impression, with his sunglasses, cigars, and FREAKIN' MOTORCYCLE…and then he gives a girl money for ice cream. What a guy. He then had the common sense in Alabasta to know who the real enemy was, and quite notably he set up one of the biggest aftereffects of Dressrosa through his failure to prevent what happened on Alabasta from being covered up.
In several ways, Smoker was a great nemesis to Luffy as well, with his powers being a great nemesis that showed Luffy the great power and diversity of the Grand Line and taught him how flexible his abilities would need to be, rather than simple stretched punches and kicks. It was nice seeing a mutual respect grow in between them, the atypical Marine against the atypical pirate, that made me look forward to a possible final confrontation.
Loathe: However, Smoker's relationship with Luffy has both love and loathe aspects to it. It was never given its fair share of time to really shape into a rivalry, with just the stuff on Alabasta, followed by absolutely no interaction until a brief scene in Marineford, and then Punk Hazard two years later. Everything between Luffy and Smoker THERE was basically a rehash of Alabasta, though Smoker was more involved in PH. The gaps between meetings made the enmity a really minor thing, and we never saw Luffy really try to find a solution to actually hit Smoker. It was like "oh crap, I should've thought of a way to fight him, guess I'll just run away and get started on that first thing tomorrow!" When Rayleigh finally brings up Armament, by then the scope is on Logia users as a whole and Smoker is simply by the wayside.
Returning to the topic of Punk Hazard, boy was Smoker a hot mess there. A great possible setup for a battle with Luffy at the beginning of the arc is taken instead by Mr. Trafalgar Law, and though Law did need some form of real introduction, it came at the cost of a great opportunity. Then Smoker proceeds to get his ass kicked three times - by Law, Vergo, and Doffy - and rarely manages to accomplish anything during the arc. The fight choreography with Vergo was great, and it's not a stretch to believe that Doffy would whoop Smoky, but timing is everything. At the end, there's no longer any emotional investment in me to see a real fight between Luffy and Smoker, because the two parted with Luffy on an extremely upward swing and Smoker on an extremely downward one. Luffy's taking down the Yonko's top brass now, so can we be expected to have a Vice Admiral give him any real threat, with his Logia now being only a useful accessory after, you guessed it, Punk Hazard with Caesar and Monet, and everything else about him not really being displayed much.
I mean, it's not like Roger and Garp had a fight to end all fights (as far as we know at least), so an ultimate clash between Luffy and Smoky doesn't need to happen, but looking back on the events of Alabasta, everything seemed to point to that they would, creating this whole disconnect.
Character and Actions: 3.5 I think very highly about his character, a little less so about his actions
Design: 4.5 He looks so cool he pretty much gives every anti-smoking movement nightmares.
-
Fucking called it!
Love: He is the first marine to actually acts by his own moral justice instead of following whatever the status quo dictates. That is something. Also he has a jutte. People would use swords or guns, but he has a motherfucking jutte. That is what any cop would have. He also smokes two cigars. But it is okay because he is a smoke logia. He can smoke without the danger of lung cancer and shit. And he also rides a bike with four wheels.
Loathe: He didn't done very well in fights lately does him?
Character: 4.5
Design: 4 -
**Smoker
Love:**
"My pants ate your ice cream"
In stark contrast to his scary face, Smoker proves to be surprisingly nice and this is the very first hint at him being a good guy marine. His personal respect
Smoker isn't afraid to tell his superiors to eat shit, he treats his underlings with respect unlike some of his fellow marines, and he and Tashigi follow their own justices. He'll team up with Luffy and Law, despite his disdain for pirates in general if it's for the sake of his own men or civilians and isn't afraid to stand up for what he believes in. Admirable traits indeed.Tools of the trade Billower Bike is cool. I'm always down for Devil Fruit users who use their abilities to power their modes of transportation. That his Jitte contains seastone specifically designed to give him the upper hand in battle with devil fruit users was a cool idea until Haki rendered seastone less special. Still a cool weapon.
Loathe:
Worf effect/Jobbing
Smoker is seen as tough. He easily thrashes Luffy in his first appearence and easily captures the impossible to trap Alvida and cuts Buggy off too…unfortunately he's also captured by Crocodile, blocked by Ace, beaten senseless by Hancock for daring to try and stop Luffy in Marineford, defeated by Law and loses his heart, gets defeated by Vergo AND nearly dies by Doflamingo's hand. Seeing how he was supposed to be Luffy's main marine rival(outside maybe Coby) it's difficult to imagine Smoker being a threat to Luffy anymore who has defeated both Croc and Doflamingo.Basically to show how terrifying an opponent is, Smoker often ends up on the wrong side of an ass kicking.
Vergo showcases the major weakness of Smoker's fruit; the more area he covers with smoke the bigger a target he is for a haki embued attack, and in the New World where nearly every physical fighter has haki that takes away a lot of his previous bite.
A little too serious Kind of a personal preference, but Smoker is…a little boring to me. He doesn't have a real wacky quirk outside liking his shirt unbuttoned(a quirk I didn't even realise he had prior to Punk Hazard spelling it out when he trades bodies with Tashigi) and smoking a lot. His devil fruit fighting style is fine, but it's not creative enough for me to get too excited about.
Character: 3.5/5 Whenever Smoker does appear he seems to affect the plot(aside from Marineford), and he does fine as a stark contrast to fellow Luffy Marine rival Coby as well as Luffy himself. Just wish he was either a little more developed as a character(a backstory would help wonders), a little quirkier and wasn't used to show off how strong other characters were.
Design: 3/5 It's perfectly functional, if a little plain. Double cigars are cool. -
Love:
Basically everything Kaido King of the Beasts just said.Loath: Same as before, but I'd also like to add that after seeing all that the Strawhats have accomplished at Alabasta, I think it's pretty frustrating that he's still so obsessed with capturing Luffy and crew. He knows by now that they're "good" (or at least "better") pirates, so shouldn't he prioritize more dangerous crew?
Character: 3/5
Design: 3/5 -
Luv:
-Personality
-Intro with the girl
-Pride when his work is involvedLoath:
-He's the mere connection of the marines with Luffy, it was presented at Punk Hazard for one reason, because he's weak and Luffy points above such thing. Oda plays with Smoker to be a support character, because just as many of you pointed, he tries to catch Luffy because of Dragon and then for code of honor leaves them escape Alubarna. My point exactly here is that he has made his job, i don't see him getting stronger, the true rival from the marines to Luffy is Coby, a guy with the 'inherited will'. The only spotlight for him to me now, it's in the Great Wave event helping Luffy because of his skill to attract people, nothing else.
-So weak, i mean he only has won over Buggy & Alvida and some punks aside the Red Line, now you realize why he should've stayed at Loguetown.
-Being part of the nice group of marines, shitty D:
-Motorcycle, where do you left it?Character:3/5
Design:2.5/5 -
Ah Smoker, my favourite Marine! (not that there's tone of competition there but still)
Love:
- His ice-cream eating pants of course. Acts tough but has a heart of gold.
- Logias are cool. Notably the first Logia we are introduced to.
- 'Tell them to eat shit.' He follows his own code of justice and him turning the other way and letting Luffy and co go during Alabasta, instead of capturing them to fulfill his pride cemented him as one of my favourite characters. He also recognised Crocodile, government-acknowledged pirate as the real threat and played a part, no matter how small in taking down the former. Whether he used the dance powder to make it rain or not after Crocodile's defeat was something interesting to think about.
- His relationship with his subordinates, namely Tashigi and the G5. He and Tashigi have a great dynamic and mutual trust which is one of the many bonds I like in One Piece. He acts gruff and harsh towards them yet its clear that he cares about them really deeply, evidenced by his rage towards Vergo's betrayal (which I found a scene well done). I wish that Oda shown more about his relationship with Hina though.
- He can smoke 2 cigars at once because he would never get lung cancer. But smoking is still bad, kids.
Loathe:
-I didn't really mind his losing streak in Punk Hazard because he went down with style in all of them (except for maybe the vs Doffy one). But maybe a huge flaw of him is being too prideful, like him refusing help from Luffy and co. in Punk Hazard even when circumstances were dire. Some flexibility would be nice.- More creative use of his fruit please! Maybe filling someone's lungs with smoke or something, but maybe that's too brutal a move to fit his character.
- What kind of parents name their child Smoker? (unless its a nickname that stuck or something…)
Character: 4/5 best Marine
Design: 3.5/5 typical hunky tough guy, though a bit too Crocodile-ish post-timeskip (fur, scar, cigar), and we all know that Crocodile pulls any look better than anyone. Cool choice of weapon. Still where's that bike?
-
Character: 4.75.
Design: 4.25You can only give a character a score of e.g. 4, 4.5 or 5 - nothing inbetween. So should I round these numbers up or down?
-
You can only give a character a score of e.g. 4, 4.5 or 5 - nothing inbetween. So should I round these numbers up or down?
Eh. Change to 4 and 4.5.
-
Love: When he's first introduced he's made to look like a more effective Captain Morgan-type villain but not long afterwards that impression is subverted with his ice cream-eating pants and he turns out to be one of the first moral Navy officers despite his intimidating looks and hardass personality. Then in Alabasta we see that he's not a cog in the Navy machine when he kicks off the "what is true justice?" moral conflict of the Navy plotline. Plus he works well as the straightman when surrounded by sillier characters like when he was stuck in the cage with the Straw Hats and when in command of the G5 marines.
Loathe: Any notion of him being a serious rival to Luffy died at Punk Hazard. Not only was his performance really embarrassing, but it highlighted how…outdated he feels. The story, powers, and stakes have grown a lot between Alabasta and Punk Hazard, but he really hasn't. His gimmick is intangibility and a magic stick, neither of which amount to much of anything anymore now that the Haki arms' race is in full steam. The next time he and Luffy clash, we're going to be going, "pfft, Luffy can just go Gear Fourth and end it with King Kong Gun". Overall, Smoker feels like a relic left over from the time when One Piece was going to be shorter, simpler, and the power levels lower.
Character: 3
Design: 3 -
Love: The fact that he has his own sense of justice, which he adheres to. He inspires his subordinates and he always knows what the right thing is. He is a capable fighter with a Logia Devil fruit to boot and he has cornered Luffy on many occasions. I also like his relationship with Tashigi.
Loathe: On the other hand, he has one of the worst Logia fruit in the series and he is not really proficient in using it. He also needs badass post-timeskip moments urgently!
Character: 4
Design: 3,5 -
Love: Smoker constantly reminds us that every group in the One Piece world has its own "good" and "bad" apples. He has a very strong sense of justice and pride that differs from the majority of the Marines' ones. What's also commendable is the fact that he doesn't let this justice of his be bound by orders from above or the marine code. The famous "Tell them to eat shit" scene was badass and powerful and that's when we finally got the full picture of his character.
His powers. He was the pretty much the first antagonist in East Blue that Luffy had no way of beating. It was a good show of just how dangerous the Grand Line, as it is teeming with abilities like Smoker's. His choice of weapon was pretty interesting as well.
I like his design as well, whether it be the pre-skip or post-skip design, enjoyed both of them tbh.
Also, 2 cigars.Loathe: There are some choices Oda made regarding Smoker's character arc that don't really sit well with me, but I wouldn't really call them loathsome. As many have mentioned, it was annoying to see Smoker go from badass strong Admiral candidate to a punching bag, namely during Punk Hazard, but all of those were pretty circumstantial and didn't bother me that much as a result.
I feel that he could have played a much bigger role in Marineford, if Oda wasn't so fixated on cockteasing us with the Admirals, Whitebeard and the Warlords. It felt like he was just sitting back and not doing anything until the Hancock scene, which, let's be honest, was not done to favor Smoker.P.S. where the bike tho?
Character - 4/5 despite his lack of success in the New World I still can't help but get excited every time I see him on panel, overall quite an enjoyable character
Design - 4/5 works really well, although some people might say that his post-skip design is an imitation of Crocodile's, I think that the characters are distinct enough to let some similarities slide. -
Smoker
Love:
-Right from his introduction he is set apart from the rest marines seen so far. Not only is he the first marine we see who has a devil fruit he is the first logia we are introduced to. He effortlessly defeats Buggy, Alvida, Luffy and Sanji. His debut shows us that the marines are a serious opponent and Smoker being just a captain does a pretty good job of hyping all the higher ups.
“I don’t have time to deal with you runts”
-His design makes him look “scary” in his first appearance but we quickly find out he is super nice (“My pants ate your ice cream" scene for one out of loads)-Other people seem to not like his focus on catching Luffy, but I am curious if other people view Garp negatively for chasing Roger? Anyways I personally really liked the fact that Smoker pretty much identifies Luffy as the guy who is going to be the 2nd Pirate King. I enjoyed the “rivalry” set up where other people were not taking Luffy seriously yet but Smoker clued in day one that Luffy would be a big threat in the future.
"It's as if the heavens themselves want that boy to survive!"-His attitude: Smoker’s personal justice and the fact that he just wants to do what is right and desire to change a corrupt system make it so I can’t help but like him. As a boss he cares about his subordinates and gets pissed about Vergo’s betrayal of G5.
“Tell them not to order to me around” “Tell them to eat shit”-The fact that he figures out that Luffy is going to pick the most dangerous island for fun is hilarious
-His seastone jutte/jitte even though haki has made it less impressive it is great symbolically for his role.
-The fact that his strict personality is fitting for a military commander allowing us to have some notable “good guy” marines that are still somewhat strict.
“Loath”
Loath is too strong of a word more fitting is "things I dislike"- All his wasted potential! He could have been a great way of exploring the marines for readers and fleshing out that part of the world since he introduced things such as
- His friendship with Hina (who happens to be one of the few female marines…)
- His rivalry with Luffy. Despite acknowledging him over 750 chapters ago as the 2nd pirate king and having the potential to be the “Garp” to Luffy’s “Roger” he just ends up becoming the guy who “jobs” to show off how cool and powerful the next opponent is.
- Remember how in the Post Enies Lobby mini-Arc Smoker was trashing paradise pirates and said marine standards were low? Or that he said he and Tashigi needed more power and influence so they were going to the new world? I totally forgive anyone who forgot since it never came about…
(I'm going to stop rambling about all the wasted potential before I make a three page list )
-something about such a cool character being designed almost entirely around smoking in a comic for kids seems kinda sketchy in the whole “role model” thingy. :ninja:Character: 5/5 – A marine who is not corrupt, a complete jerk OR insane? Easily my favourite marine for his attitude and characteristics. I just wish Oda wouldn't waste a 5/5…
Design: 4.5/5 – Honestly even though his design is a bit plain by One Piece standards both his pre timeskip and post timeskip designs are great IMO. -
Love:
His moral conviction is great. Having the gall to call out his superiors on their shadiness in a bad ass One Piece way is awesome.
His stoicism is fun. He may just be my favorite One Piece straight man.
I love the "Hard, cold, emotionless brute actually has a heart of gold" cliche.
His dynamic with Luffy is wonderful. A perpetual game of cat and mouse. Like Tom and Jerry with more mutual respect and less dismemberment.
Loathe:
He was written terribly during Punk Hazard. He does not do well as a hype tool. It worked in Alabasta where he recognized that Luffy did what he couldn't and told off the higher-ups in his most prominent, defining moment. It did not work when he was just smacked around for fifty chapters and is still supposed to be seen as an equal to Luffy, who was more or less doing fine the whole time.
This is more of a nitpick but his appearance at Punk Hazard is kind of out of place in hindsight. While not really a rule, he seemed to be around for pinnacle moments in Luffy's adventure. He was there when Luffy left East Blue, he was there when Luffy toppled his first Warlord, he was at the battle that gave Luffy his most prevalent development to date. What was so special about Punk Hazard aside from it being the first New World island?
Character: 4 out of 5; that first scene of him with the girl and the ice cream is all we needed to know about him. Gruff, hardened military man that is actually the biggest sweetheart. I'm just waiting for his inevitable clash with Luffy where he will (hopefully) really shine.
Design: 4 out of 5; bad ass biker motif with bands of cigars on his jacket, a chiseled scowl, and the only man I've seen that can pull off that hair style.
-
Love
The jitte. It's not fancy but I like the idea of a weapon with seastone.
Good Boss to Tashigi. He gave her a nice speech back in Alabasta and generally always good avice
Nice motocycle His ride at Logue town was pretty awesome.
Getting beaten by Law. It was an effective way to hype Law and prove the new order in the new world.
He made sure Crocodile would lose
**LoatheHis cockiness** I remember seeing him in calling Sanji weak back in Logue town when he tried to kick. And first thing I tought was "easy thing to say when you are intangible." That pattern continue to repeat itself for the whole first half grandline where he kept shutting people down like he was some grand fighter when all he had was being freaking intangible. It especially ticked me off when he mocked a group at 50M I think.
His antigibility It definitely robbed me the wrong way that for the whole grandline no one could touch him. And what the hell is logia doing stationed at East Blue?
The aura of cool he is suppose to have I think the easiest proof is how softly Oda kept him out in Alabasta and how we don't seem get destroyed by Handcock.
His liberty He was stationed at East Blue but it seems that the marines just don't give a damn that one day he decided to hop on his ship and do wathever he wants.
His work ethics Logue town like a place that someone like Smoker would really be useful in but he just decided his pride was more important than that. Also I'm sure he took the promotion anyway.
The constant losses at PH Losing to Law is fine, losing to everyone is tiresome. I know he wants to show Tashigi how it's done but he shouldn't put so much energy in teaching jobing 101. At least, it confirmed that VA were the new Sea kings. Powerful beings contracted to being hype tool. I have that theory that it is in there contract and that Shichibukai actually get a nice discount in hiring a VA for hype. It's probably Tashigi's dream job. She can both claim to be strong and continue to job.
Character: 2.5/5 I reaaaaally don't like his character but he is not a bad one. Just one I'm really allergic to especially the cockiness and badasness.

The results will come quite a bit late tomorrow, so in the meanwhile the hint: It's our first Straw Hat member…kind of. Well, I think he counts.
Edit: Will be able to post the results in time now anyways.

Goddammit, you're useless!

"First" in like the "the first that we'll analyze", to further clarify. But man, compared to now Coby & Helmeppo sure used to be some ugly ducklings back then, huh?

Love: If you were to ask me who my fav Marine is, it'd be Vice Admiral Smokey. You would think his impassive appearance is the only thing he's got at first glimpse back in East Blue, but then he gives a little girl money to buy ice cream after "his pants ate it", showing that he's a good guy who's just doing his job. His smoke powers always looked like the Logia equivalent of Luffy's rubber powers to me, which I found cool, and that Sea Prism Stone tipped jitte (which I think isn't that large irl) screamed awesome in my head.
He's the epitome of "everyone has a special view of righteousness, or right and wrong", in my opinion. Even though he's a Marine who works to put pirates behind bars, he'll call out the shady stuff his higher-ups do and "tell them to eat shit". I also like how Smokey sees Luffy as his #1 catch even though Luffy doesn't feel any sort of peril towards him.
Loathe: Punk Hazard really gave poor Smokey a bad post-timeskip debut. He got thrown around by everyone during that arc, Law, Vergo and Mingo. The guy never truly got to shine in PH, or at all yet. Hopefully that'll change one day.

Smoker's Arlong Park Evaluation
The three most commonly loved things about Smoker:
- Badass with a Heart of Gold – If it's one thing his design and usual demeanor give off, it's that he is badass. I mean, he smokes two cigars at the same time! But beyond this cool facade lies a good-hearted man, who is there to help little children and that would do anything to protect his underlings.
- Own Sense of Justice - At the beginning of One Piece most Marines were power-hungry assholes. But then came Smoker: He was the first important Marine figure, who was a good person - someone adhering his own moral compass. This sense of justice even goes as far as letting his own target flee for the greater good and telling the greatest power in the world to eat shit.
- Powers & Equipment - His Devil Fruit power was the first to give Luffy a fair share of trouble. Additionally, he rides around on a motorcycle he powers himself (or used to at least), and stops his enemy with a badass Jitte equipped with Sea Stone on top!
Favorite comment goes to: @Strooger:
To put it simple: Smoker is a badass.
The three most commonly loathed things about Smoker:
- Punk Hazard's Punching Bag - Almost everybody was kinda disappointed with Smoker's performance in Punk Hazard. He lost to 4 different individuals and really didn't make much of a splash. Smoker just didn't seem up to par anymore, which brings us to the next point…
- Wasted Potential - He is the man on Luffy's heels since back in Logue Town, one of his biggest rivals…but their relationship didn't really go much further. Sure, Smoker pinned Luffy almost down a bunch of times, but with the arrival in the New World he just doesn't feel like much of a threat to Luffy anymore - more like a leftover of a bygone time.
- Weak Usage of Devil Fruit - Back in East Blue, when Smoker got introduced as the first Logia user, his Devil Fruit sure seemed impressive, but nowadays? His main shtick always just was his intangibilty, but in comparison with other powers of the same type and with Haki being there, it just doesn't seem to cool anymore without the White Chaser showing off some more interesting moves.
Favorite comment goes to:@Crossword:
Any notion of him being a serious rival to Luffy died at Punk Hazard.
In the end Smoker got:
-
an acceptable score of 3.71 for his character
-
and a very similar 3.73 for a well-made badass design.
Thanks for all the responses! The next character will follow very soon.
