I appreciated the gimmick of the 2DS not folding. This is basically the New DSi XL with a nipple.
The Nintendo Thread

"New 2DS XL". The name straight-up sounds like something made up to parody Nintendo and their many rehash handheld designs and naming conventions.
Nevertheless, they ain't getting my money. My 3DS from 2011 works just fine.
-
Well, obviously this isn't made for people who've enjoyed the 3DS for multiple years and are looking at the Switch now.
The whole concept is to produce a cheaper version of the New 3DS that can be appealing to people who want to enjoy what is a really solid and established 3DS library. New 2DS XL is also the only logical thing to call it at this point since it makes it clear that
- it's from the 2DS line (no 3D)
- it's from the New line (better performance, access to more spec heavy games like Xenoblade, C-stick, etc.)
- it's meant to have larger screens (XL), for visual integrity over portability. This actually makes the clamshell design nice since otherwise it'd be a bother to carry around.
Random person who decides to play pokemon again, or people whose kids are now old enough to have a portable system but for whom you don't want to spend $300 + accessories for a switch… there's various consumer scenarios where someone could literally walk to a store, see a relatively affordable handheld with a massive library, and just spring for it. It makes sense to have this thing exist at this point in the 3DS life cycle, kinda like how the Game Boy Micro was the swan song of the Game Boy line. Though I personally still would have preferred it about a year before as an alternative to the New 3DS when that was being pushed as their main handheld.
-
Does this somewhat cannibalizes the switch sales? The gigantic D's/3ds library vs Zelda and splatoon
-
It looks soooo pretty.
But why does it exist? I'm confused.
It exists because a chunk of the population is scared that 3D will hurt their kids, and yet stores can't keep the 3DS in stock…
Most likely American retailers specifically asked for the thing. -
Well, I guess if my OG 3DS ever conks out I know what I'm replacing it with.
-
I certainly wasn't expecting this new not-new but new 3DS model, but yeah, at least there's another choice out there.
-
-
I find that character gross and disturbing.
In other news, Nintendo is claiming the NES Classic was discontinued due to lack of resources and wanting to re-focus elsewhere. Nice try, meaningless marketing mouth-flappers. Maybe you can break it down to me how maintaining a production pipeline for an extremely popular product is stretching your resources thin. I'd really like to see the numbers. Because there is absolutely no way you can blame anything but incompetence at one stage or another.
-
Idk, trying to refocus elsewhere makes perfect sense with numerous logical theories as to why you cut that short. Like:
- not cannibalizing VC sales for future Switch release
- possible desire to make more SNES classics for the next fiscal year and focusing manufacturing resources on that
- desire to focus manufacturing effort and retail space on consoles and handhelds which in turn support upcoming software releases (more people having access to 3DS = more of a market for late cycle 3DS titles on the way)
- doubling of Switch production for the year also means focusing retail space, marketing and manufacturing on Switch and first party Switch accessories first and foremost.
-
If you just look at the "refocus resources" part and re-interpret it as "refocus what we want people to spend money on" then yeah, that makes sense. But I don't get how production of the NES Classic, which is 3rd-party hardware assembled by contractors, is going to be a resource issue. If it's profitable they should be able to spare (or hire) a couple more guys to oversee that.

I think that's the issue right there.
Wasn't the NES Mini made of spare off-the-shelf parts? Manufacturing more of those parts would probably not be cost-benefitial.

They could just increase the price.

Looks like the first Mario & Luigi game is getting a 3DS remake.
There's three issues I can see with that:
1: The game is not very long compared to later titles; I remember beating it as a kid within five days, and that was after school. If they're charging 30-40 dollars for it VS the 8 they charge for the VC release, they'll need to beef it up somewhere without ruining what was already good about it.
2: The sprite work is arguably the most classic; people still love using it for fan projects today. (I know I did.) They'll need to take great care in updating it: they shouldn't just reuse the assets from DT/PJ. Plus, were the original voice clips recorded in higher quality? Because if not, they'll either have to reuse the old clips or re-record them, and both are not optimal.
3: They'll either have to renegotiate Geno's admittedly small cameo, or cut him out completely. That said, I hope they take this chance to add back in the cameos that were meant to pop in with E. Gadd when he presented those special items. It'd also be nice to finally give the Koopalings some dialogue; it was always weird they never said anything before their battles. Plus, they could make the Bean Gem quest easier not to miss.

I need a Popple theme remix after not getting one in Dream Team.

Yeah… it's one of those games I'd rather replay in its original form than see remade. Tomato Adventure (the game it was built off of) would be awesome to see remade and translated, though.

I replayed some of it recently, and its writing and art style are still top-notch. The main problem I had was the sound quality was awful: the songs are composed amazingly, but hearing them with that tinny GBA processing made it sound a whole lot worse than I remembered.
-
It's funny to hear M&L called "short". As a kid, I remember that game seeming endless. I got to Joke's End expecting that to be the finale and was amazed when the game kept going afterwards. Sounds like I need to replay it, and a remake is a good excuse.

I still haven't finished the first one.:ninja:

So, we've got about a month and a half until E3. With the launch of the Switch, Ninty has an interesting position here going into E3. New system and demand for new games for it… anybody got any predictions for what Ninty might bring at E3 this year?

Super Mario Oddysey, ARMS, Splatoon 2 and maybe FE: Warriors.
But if we are talking about new stuff, either the Superstar Saga remake or Mario VS Rabbids.
-
Pokemon Stars maybe?
-
Well I think it's fairly safe to say Fire Emblem Switch will be revealed at E3

A possible scenario:
Playable at the event: Splatoon 2, ARMS, Mario Odyssey, FE Warriors
Reveal/More in depth showcasings: FE Switch, Xenoblade 2, Pikmin 4, New Retro Studios game, New Sakurai game, very brief Pokémon teaser, DLC of BotW, unlikely but short teasers for No More Heroes 3 and Shin Megami Tensei V (also possibly some Ubisoft shbalang game)
Possible surprises: Metroid, F-Zero, Mother (essentially the trifecta of hopes brought up every time), a Platinum exclusive
-
I'm hoping for new Wario and Starfy platformers.
-
I'm just keeping my radar low - FE Warriors and definitely more Splatoon 2 stuff. Everything else is up to chance.
Also:
hahaha. :D
-
Splatoon 2 will definitely play a part as there was an American Tournament from which the Winners got a free flight and stay and everything in between for it to battle against an yet unknown opponent in an exhibition match on switch.

Jim Sterling did another video about the NES Classic.

It seems like we may be getting a Bowser spin-off game.
https://mynintendonews.com/2017/05/05/nintendo-have-filed-a-trademark-for-a-bowser-spin-off-game/ -
Still not Waluigi, but I'll take it in theory. In practice, I hope it's better than the Peach game.
-
Does Bowser's Inside Story count as a Bowser game, or is it too Mario & Luigi?
Speaking of:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1365925Superstar Saga remaster?
-
Maybe it'll be Dungeon Keeper in 2D where you build Super Mario Bros levels designed to kill an AI Mario, and then go out into the level to help your minions finish him off.
-
Seeing as how Bowser is one of my favorite Mario characters, I can't wait to hear more info on that.

Breath of the Wild was 2016, but this year, Nintendo's main game will be Super Mario Odyessy (for e3):

Surely Nintendo can do better than releasing more ports of Wii U games.
They certainly don't have my interest in the Switch until Super Mario Odyssey.

They can, but the thing about Smash is that it's significantly faster and easier to port the massive Smash Bros Wii U and sell millions, particularly to all these people who never cared about the Wii U, than it is to develop an entirely new Smash Bros, which would at the least take 3-4 years.
Given the success of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, imo it would be stupid NOT to release Super Smash Bros for Nintendo Switch. It's free money waiting to happen.
-
Heard tales was coming to the switch next year but with the way the controls are, will the tales battle style work?

Just feels cheap.
As a Wii U owner it just furthers the notion that the Switch is not worth investing in and isn't a true "next generation" console. Can't project an image of a new console when all you're releasing are games I already have on the past console.
They're so lucky. If Super Mario Odyssey had been another Galaxy or 3D World style game (which was looking very likely) I would have absolutely no want for a Switch ever at this point. Even then, how worth it will it really be? Right now it's just a machine with rehashes of Wii U games and Splatoon 2 which to be blunt, I could not even possibly care less about. The Animal Crossing they produce for the system better be as good of a sequel as New Leaf.

To put it bluntly, you are not the market they are after.
The Wii U hardly sold, while the Switch is a runaway success. They won't care what Wii U owners feel about having to pay for Wii U content all over again if they can ensure that millions more will want that content due to never having it before.
And yea, it really is cheap. That's the great thing about it. Ensure millions of sales without having to pay stupidly high development costs? fuck yea that's a good investment. And if you're invested in Nintendo as a whole, that's also good news, seeing how it means it can ensure a solid user base during the early cycles which pretty much guarantees they'll have a user base to design and develop for. It means more games. More opportunities for non-safe IPs to appear due to higher confidence in risk. More frequent support, and livelier servers and more people to play with. From what you say, no, the Switch isn't worth it for you right now. And that's perfectly ok with them.
-
I certainly wouldn't mind having HD Smash on the go, especially if they compile all the Wii U and 3DS stages (really want Magicant in HD) and put Ice Climbers back in, with maybe one more character to make it an even 60.
-
And here I am, wanting the switch for Splatoon 2 and MKD and most likely selling my WiiU for it
-

Don't forget Smash Run. Get rid of that stupid ass smash tour shit that no one likes.
-
What she said, is kind of shitty for Wii u owners, but we did get to enjoy it 3 years before them, and is not like we lose that.
They could announce it in a way that is more like splatoon with updates and stuff.
And yeah, no one ever tested smash tour for "fun". Specially the stupid metroid archivement. Smash run was preeeety close to being good, and it is compatible with switch's strategy.
Make the island change a little, either go full synch (and have everyone on the stage at the same time) or full asynch (let you make runs and store them for future battles)

Zelda joining the mobile family

Hmmm.. While FEheroes is neat and kind of a hit, offering a bite sized experience of the main games, allowing you to see many characters from the franchise, and many more coming, Mario run was an "OK" runner and a bad Mario game with the same coat of paint and style that the average Mario game, with a business model that doesn't suit the platform.
Having said that, I really hope they don't gacha Zelda. Pokemon and Fire Emblem work with that because they have almost a thousand characters, Zelda has like 300 including monsters and reincarnations.
