They changed Luffy's skin tone and now it looks so similar to the pre-timeskip colors. I couldn't be happier. Luffy is back.
-
agree with you , Luffy's skin color after time skip is so bad + hair of sanji :/
happy to hear that from u , and i hope they keep that color skin from the picture
-
I honestly never knew it changed. Their was the obvious nico robin one but that's it.
-
More than half the crew came back from the timeskip with paler skin and washed out colors, but like you said Robin's was the most noticeable. Luffy, Zoro, and Usopp were all noticeably tan/dark dudes at one point, until Toei decided to say fuck that shit.
-
Toei should have kept the tans. It became a part of the characters. Post-timeskip One Piece in the anime feels weird with the coloring.
Using the manga colors after the timeskip was not only jarring and unnecessary, but also illogical, since Oda's skin coloring was never consistent in the first place due to the use of copic markers and also the lighting that he would convey in each color spread.

They didn't even use "manga colors" because Oda always uses the same tone for everyone and in the anime you can clearly see differences. They changed the vibrant pre-timeskip tones for boring tones with no personality.
Also, we should mention that this happens for everyone, not just the Straw Hats, even if it's not as noticeable.

It seems like both have changed for the WCI arc. Are there new series directors or something?
-
The color palette doesn't seem much different to me. Is it just slight changes to Luffy's palette only on a new scene during the intro? Still isn't quite pre-timeskip palette. Sanji's hair still has the time-skip look.

A lot of people here are very attached to the Water Seven-era designs and with good reason. It was a time in the anime where the design and animation aesthetics of the series was at it's peak. It was also when a lot of the animation directors of the show were not only at the top of their game but they were all really distinct from one another which gave the overall anime production a lot more personality. As Hisada gradually took over the character design duties and directors changed hands there was beginning to be a focus on staying closer to the manga dynamics for the series. This was established with a kind of re-branding of the animation style starting with Strong World and carrying that into the main show. Toei seemed more focused on consistency so the newer set of the animation directors seem to have less distinction from one another. To be honest I have not been following the animation style as much as I used to but the only ones I can pick out of the top of my head are Hisada, Nakatani (who I beleive left) and a few of the in-demand inbetweeners who are responsible for stuff like 4th Gear and that's it. It doesn't mean that the animation itself is "bad" as I've seen a gradual increase of quality in each arc since the timeskip, but I do think the anime has lost a little of it's distinctiveness outside of the specials and movies.
-
The role of the chief animation supervisor, which Hisada and now Ichikawa have picked up, is specifically geared towards uniting the animation supervisors under a single banner. There has indeed been a conscientious effort to maintain consistency between episodes in that regard.
-
Does anyone know if Eisaku Inoue still works on the show as animation director? He's the guy who directed Episode of Alabasta/Chopper/Merry I believe.

No. Inoue didn't show up as an animation director for quite some time due to him being busy with other series, but he returned back to the One Piece tv series back at the end of Dressrosa as a key animator.
He's currently working on Tiger Mask W which is having its last cour and is ending this summer. Don't know if he's coming back to One Piece afterwards though. -
Hello everyone,
-
Do you think that the quality of animation has increased since the beginning of Zou arc? For me, at least, it seems to be more consistent than in previous arcs (esp. Dressrosa).
-
What do you think lead to such drop in animation quality since post-timeskip? Was it change in management, budget issues etc.?
-
Lastly, what is more important for you (you have to chose one) - 2-3 chapter pacing, but with average animation (such as we have now) OR great animation (like we had in Saboady Archipelago arc), but 0,5-1 chapter pacing with bits of filler?
Would love to know your thoughts.

I absolutely do think so. Zou arc was animated nicely with quite alot of cuts from shida and tomita so it was entertaining, and even random moments were animated pretty nicely. I dunno, I think it was nicer than dressrosa for the most part. I'm now at punk hazard(rewatching one piece) so i'll probably have a more detailed explanation after I rewatch dressrosa and zou. Also, the last few episodes, with ichikawa as the chief ad, looked absolutely fantastic. I loved every second honestly
-
No idea tbh. I'm not really interested in such stuff, but I think it's management just because they probably COULD have made it amazing. Also as i've mentioned, I've been rewatching one piece and tbh I didn't really notice the famous 'post-timeskip drop in animation quality' everyone is talking about. It's just that there were alot of nice looking cuts by talented people pre-timeskip that made you forget that one piece was pretty much always kinda choppy-ish. but that's just my take on it. I don't really know. Any way, I think one piece is gonna return to its former glory now with ichikawa as chief ad
-
I would MUCH much rather have great animation with slow pacing. Great animation is just so nice to have. But i'll be able to deal with average animation and good pacing as long as they nail the key moments with good animation and directing.
All I want is a massive well animated beatdown with "I will surpass you" ost playing in the background, right after an excellent build-up with luffy being angry and shit all 309 style. That'll just do it for me, its pretty much what I crave from One Piece.
I hope that one day i'll be able to relive that 309 sensation~

Can you shed some light on this Ichikawa guy? What is so special about him and how he might improve the quality of the anime? Thanks.

Keiichi Ichikawa is someone that joined the core One Piece staff relatively recently, we've yet to see his full efficiency as he was just promoted to a chief animation director. He was the character designer and chief animation director of both Episode of Sabo and Heart of Gold specials, and these two specials had a fairly high quality. Keiichi Ichikawa alongside Eisaku Inoue mastered the style of Shingo Araki and Michi Himeno, and we all know how Inoue was one of the more beloved people working on the series.
And finally, assigning someone else other than Kazuya Hisada to the job of chief animation director is definitely something pleasant, as Hisada handling both this work and character designing would be too much, considering the sheer number of characters in the following arc, I personally think dividing the work will have a rather good results in the final product. -

Hello everyone,
- Do you think that the quality of animation has increased since the beginning of Zou arc? For me, at least, it seems to be more consistent than in previous arcs (esp. Dressrosa).
There was a jump in the animation quality because at the beginning of Zou we had a lot of atmospheric details in shading, backgrounds as well as some nice key and in-between animation moments. Overall there was a vibrancy to the anime that I haven't really seen since Water Seven. I'll expand on that in the next question.
- What do you think lead to such drop in animation quality since post-timeskip? Was it change in management, budget issues etc.?
It's not so much as a drop in quality at that particular junture but more of a gradual change becuase of how the animation staff was changing hands. By Water Seven a lot of the established animators got comfortable with their own styles and had a lot of great key animators. As an end result there were points where the animation rivaled stuff like Movie 7 and 9. This style stayed on through Thriller Bark to Saobody even though I personally feel at this point Koizumi's original designs were beginning to conflict with Oda's artistic evolution giving a "stiffness" to some of the character designs (unless an episode was animated by Inoue or Tate). This was rectified when Hisada took over the duties and gave a more manga centric look to the show, but around Impel Down/Marineford a lot of the animation directors responsible for some of the best episodes of the show started getting other work. We had a lot of newer animators come on during the Strawhat Seperation arc as well as the new manga focused asthetic so that's the change everyone keeps mentioning. Also when Strong World came out they slightly changed the color palette for the series (Luffy's hat and Robin's skin color being the most noticeable). Since the timeskip the animation staff has been on an upward learning curve but Fishman Island gets A LOT of criticism because I think fans had some very high expectations for that arc and the overall animation was average to good at best.
- Lastly, what is more important for you (you have to chose one) - 2-3 chapter pacing, but with average animation (such as we have now) OR great animation (like we had in Saboady Archipelago arc), but 0,5-1 chapter pacing with bits of filler?

Unless something changes with Oda's schedule we're stuck with what we got. Toei keeps nixing opportunities to have long filler arcs since I don't think we've had a long stretch since inbetween Alabasta and Skypiea. Yeah, that long ago.
Does anyone know if Eisaku Inoue still works on the show as animation director? He's the guy who directed Episode of Alabasta/Chopper/Merry I believe.
He's worked VERY little on the show since the timeskip and whenever he does come back he doesn't have a lot of the staff he had during the pre-timeskip days so his animation lacks that "shiny" polish it used to have. He seems to happen every blue moon with the anime now and honestly he stuck out more in the older days of the show but not so much now.
-
Are there any good key animation examples of his work? I'd love to study this guy further.
Go no further than last week's episode. He redrew almost every cut that involved Sanji, and he (Sanji) noticeably looks far more detailed than usual and looks more like he came out of one of the recent movies than the TV show. The new scenes in the opening appear to be his work as well.
-

Ichikawa isn't a great key animator, and that's not what his new job is supposed to cover anyway. He's known for his detailed, expressive and thick-lined artwork, which you may have noticed to be very prominent in episode 783 already.

Myeah, I'm personally not a fan of thick lines. My favourite animators working on the show are probably Naoki Tate and Katsumi Ishizuka. I haven't seen much, if anything, of either of these for quite some time now, which saddens me greatly.
-
What was the talk about characters going back to their color schemes from before the timeskip, or was that false?
-
Just a quick question, do One Piece Blu ray releases fix some of the animation issues/errors or improve animation quality, like in Sailor Moon, DB Super, Hunter X Hunter, Jojo's Bizzarre Adventures and other home releases? Thanks.

They did with the Episode of Merry home release, they cleaned up and fixed many badly drawn shots. However the finished product still isn't that great.
I'd love to know if they improved anything with any other One Piece DVD/Blu-ray release.
-

An unscientific answer but I'm gonna go ahead and say no. They never did so in the past with dvds (I know the question of fixing issues is for the blu rays) so why start now? And who would you get to do that? The staff already has enough on their plate as is,and I don't really see toei spending money to outsource it either.
On another note I don't think any of the changes would be negligible enough to even affect /and or spot the difference. Most of the time the anime seems to be on model anyway as far as the characters go,besides their efforts should be more focused on fixing the pacing of episode by episode.
-
I really liked when shintani naohiro used the thick line to draw character in the episode 784 , i hope the other animators do the same as him in the future
-
I can understand why they would let certain shots slide for broadcast as they have a tight deadline, however for DVD/Blu/International Release/Broadcast I would have thought they'd be more careful.
It takes money but it doesn't take much effort recognize and fix small mistakes like this which have huge impacts on quality. Dressrosa comes to mind: http://i.imgur.com/xktWa0k.jpg
Though not an error another thing I'm curious to see if they kept or not is this specific NEP (which still has no explanation):Since Zou these mistakes seem to appear less and less.
EDIT: Watch this space.
-
Now that there is a separate chief animation supervisor the number of shots needing corrections will probably drop.
-
Interesting new discovery!
Due to real life events that occurred 2 years ago episodes 679 and 680 needed to be edited for broadcast. http://time.com/3676543/isis-japanese-hostages/
I compared footage of the broadcast and home release. I assumed it was censored 2 years ago when first broadcast (it looked shoddy) but didn't think the home release would be any different.
http://apforums.net/showthread.php?t=42375&page=2&p=3407311&viewfull=1#post3407311 )(Video upload doesn't include a censored 2 second clip during the recap shown at the start of 681.)
Interesting to note, Luffy's blood from one of Doffy's string attacks was censored. So there you have it, I guess these episodes went through similar editing like what happened when episode 359 was first broadcast.
-
What was the talk about characters going back to their color schemes from before the timeskip, or was that false?
Where did you hear these rumours? I would love to know more. The pre-timeskip color scheme was so much better than the one we have now.
-

Read 2 pages back, Luffy has a different skin tone only in the new scenes in the opening sequence but I think that's about it.
Unrelated but in case anyone missed:
EDIT: Update, watching 681 and already 2 shots with blood have been censored. Is this just because of the terrorists events that occurred at the same time, or do they purposely remove blood for broadcast? I distinctly remember Dressrosa lacking a lot of blood…

Two things I'm wondering about that I'm hoping you guys will be able to answer:
What happened to Kenji Kuroyanagi, Katsumi Ishizuka, Naoki Tate and Ryo Onishi? They were among some of my favourite animators on the show, but I haven't seen them work on it since atleast fishman island/punk hazard, which deeply saddens me. Are they working on Tiger Mask W or some other Toei show? I know TMW is ending this summer, and I'm wondering if there's any chance some of them will return to One Piece.

I don't know about the others, but Naoki Tate is working on Dragon Ball Super.
-
Ishizuka's apparently been working on stand-alone projects for Toei recently, though he did pop in a few times for small Dressrosa cuts (which weren't anything special at all). Tate is on Dragon Ball Super (check out Goku's and 17's fight in this week's episode), Kuroyanagi is on Tiger Mask W, and I think Onishi might be too?
-
toei should bring more talented animators
We cant just wait until tiger mask or dragon ball super end and hoping they will come back working to one piece again , or moving on another toei project
i know its expensive , but i hope they can find a strategy to make balance
and sorry If my answer is long ^^ -
Can anyone explain this? I can't get my head around it, did Toei fix an error? To the left is Blu-Ray, to the right is the Funi stream (which I assume is the same as broadcast right?)

I'm guessing that's just the encoding, all the Blu-Rays are that vibrant. Look at Law's right arm (or what's left of it).

- They removed the ripped cloth around Law's severed arm to the point where it doesn't even look severed.
- Some minor shading around the droplets of blood outside the bigger pool of blood.

Why would they do that? Seems a little backwards, every other episode I could spot differences with contained more blood/etc on the Blu-ray than the broadcast version.

Is it true that Nagamine is taking over as series director? If so, I'm really thrilled since I absolutely loved Film Z. If it is true, then this, along with Ichikawa as the new CAD, has to be one of the most exciting things that has ever happened to the One Piece anime.
