Gastino was gold! haha. Seriously, if he wasn't bad enough I would love for him to join the crew but it seems Carrot will be the one joining. Those panels with her being curious about new things that she can see when she travels, is that good enough reason?
Chapter 858: The Meeting
-
-
Straight man Jimbei. Arrages meetings and cuts banter. It's like Oda too needs someone who is focused on the "important" parts of the journey.
I like to imagine that Jimbeis joining cuts at least two years from the manga. Noone gets imprisoned at the start of a new arc. Bills are always paid. Want to help this miserable citizen you just met? Jimbei already arranged a meeting with the mayor at the town hall for you.:ninja:

I am confused how to feel about the scene with Pekoms and the Sun Pirates. We have Pekoms being fooled into believing BM is gonna be warned against Bege and those guys fooling him into thinking that and preventing him from going to her aid so they can actually help Bege to kill her.
Even though BM is the big villain of this arc, it's hard to not see Jinbe and the Sun Pirates as the bad guys here compared to Pekoms.Pekoms is a wild card here, because he's very loyal to Big Mom and his crewmates yet is liked by people on the other side and unwittingly gave them all the info they've needed lol. Poor guy. The morality of the Sun Pirates is hardly much of a factor given that Luffy is currently negotiating with the guy who shot Pekoms, plus they're at least taking care of the guy.
I'm also curious about Praline. Thankfully we managed to find out what is going on with Chiffón, but why would Praline also help to take her mother down? The non-married kids are so loyal to BM, so it's not like her kids hate her as a rule, but for some reason all the wives seem to want her dead.
Pudding's relationship with Big Mom may be different than what she indicated 30 chapters ago, but her description of Big Mom's treatment of her children was pretty much spot-on. Praline has a choice between a husband she genuinely loves, or an unbearably possessive mother. The unmarried kids aren't all better off either, as Smoothie wants to handle trouble herself, Opera is pretty fearful of Big Mom and Moscato is, well, dead. Of course, not all of them feel that way; Perospero and Brulee seem particularly loyal, but a diversity like that is to be expected among siblings. But by and large, Big Mom treats her kids shittily and many of them would like nothing more than to deviate from the course she's set for them.
-
I think when Bege egged Luffy on to hit him, he was obviously going to retaliate. Mafia guys say stuff like that. If Luffy hit him the deal would've been off right there.
-
I wouldn't be surprised if Jinbe ends being Luffy's First-Mate.

Great chapter anyways. The "Gangster" Gastino with CAESAR CLOWN written behind it cracked me up. Too bad Luffy tooth grew back, I think he looked really cool like that (guess I could say the same about Brook's crack), but I like the way it played out… almost as if Oda was mocking me for expecting Luffy to stay like that.
it's a pirate manga, everyone is the bad guy here.
also, with so many factions in act, someone has to take the fall.
actually i tink oda could have made this more interisting if he wasn't so hell bent on making big mom a monster in every way…the big mom of earlier in this arc it was a ruthless business woman you could talk with if she wasn't in one of his hungry crysis...but then she became more and more of a cartoon villain. -
I need to ask again…
I have no knowledge about the VIZ website but I really need the next JUMP magazine with Sanji on it.
Somehow I can't even visit the site from Germany so do I have a chance to get from here to the cover at least?
And if we are it... How do european people read the VIZ scanlations on a legal way (I love stephen)

-
Loved the chapter, particularly the style.
– That anthem Streusen is singing on the first page rings true both for One Piece and our lives. / -- Luffy and Sanji stomping in on Bege's hideouts is a very badass panel. Standing up to the big shots, metaphorically. Oda really loves this type of theme, and I don't really get tired of it. / -- lol nohatChopper. / -- A Nami/Carrot shower fanservice scene... A GOOD one... nose bleeds profusely I'm supposed to read dialogue while this is going on!? Fine. / -- Nice, a bit of Elbaf lore and the tension between Big Mom and giants is explained. Oda leaves no stone unturned. / -- We got enough of the tooth being gone, I'm fine with this. I would've accepted either direction Oda wanted to go with that. Luffy already has a far more meaningful scar(s) on him anyway. Viva calcium! / -- Fucking awesome spread. Mafia style Straw Hats, in canon! Along with the other diverse, wacky designs, this table spread is pure One Piece.
-
so Big Mom's children hate her ?
-
The fanservice was quite fanservicey…
...that said, pretty great chapter, really funny.
Even the exposition managed to be heartfelt, and told us stuff about Lola, Chiffon AND Big Mom in one fell swoop. Not bad at all.
For once, I'm glad Oda cut corners with the Caesar scenario; a rescue mission sounded a bit jarring, specially seeing how he's genuinely despised by the crew.
The double spread is great, just like last week's, and everyone looks mighty cool in their new attires.
-
I wouldn't be surprised if Jinbe ends being Luffy's First-Mate.
Well he definitely seems like a first advisor or rather a consigliere here. If the straw hats were a mafia, Luffy is the boss, Jinbei the consigliere and Zoro as the underboss.

You can try using proxy servers to access the Viz site from a country like UK, or Ireland. I use Hola VPN and have a subscription in its 2nd year now. It's not bad at all. OP, MHA, SnSoma, Blue Exorcist, OPM, Promised Neverland, quite a few interesting manga titles every week and they usually publish the 3 first chapters of Jump's new series. Sometimes they stick around too, which is nice (like Neverland, recently).
-

WHAT. Jimmy will join the SH but ZORO is the first mate. he is the first to join.
-

That's probably the best simple analogy of Luffy's crewmate relationships I've ever seen.
-
So i assume the whole Lola issue will be again a thematic once they reach Elbaf.
Good to see this sure destination hyped a bit, even when we´re right now having enough to think about in the near future. -
As much as the tooth thing is a gag, it could actually be easily explained. Luffy is a strong guy, in his own way he is smart with the usage of his own body and instincts. We know that life return exists in one piece, as it does in many Asian fantasy settings. The milk thing could just be Luffy using life return, Oda just presented it as more of a joke.
I mean luffy blows his bones up, speeds up his blood cells, and whatever he does with fear fourth. Luffy having some innate understanding of life return would make sense.

Thanks but I just want the cover cleaned up somehow… Dat Sanji
-
Finally, I don't know how many chapters I've been waiting for that, but finally, Luffy's tooth is back.
When Caesar was introduced in the punk hazard, who could have guessed that he would still play an important role in the series like 5 years later lol
Who could have guessed Galdino/Mr. 3 playing an important role in the climax of the first half of One Piece?
-
Great chapter. And just to clarify, the punch already happened, right? Seemed a little bit lackluster, but Luffy gave him a gear second punch towards to upper chest, eh?
It looks like Jimbei grabbed Luffy's stretched arm and barely managed to redirect it. Loved Bege's cool reaction though. Honestly, I wish that Bege could replace Law's role in the story.
Well, the only thing I don't like about this chapter - or better said the last ten or so chapters - is how Big Mom turned from a more complex villain into the kind of more evil for evil's sake villain.
it's a pirate manga, everyone is the bad guy here.
also, with so many factions in act, someone has to take the fall.

Chiffon's statements actually touched me a bit. I just hope that Bege actually values her and isn't using her as a tool to decapitate Linlin. It doesn't help the streak of her seeming bad for the sake of being bad, but it still relatively works for reader satisfaction on its own.
-
Im still curious of this plan Bege has … He must have some contacts in the BM pirates or maybe the underworld that could help him or something...

I'm gonna laugh my ass off if the shady figure Pekoms saw in the harbor is Urouge coming back for round two in a secret alliance with Bege.

could be nice to see Urouge's ability up close and how strong he has become I kind of always liked he character, but I was maybe thinking Bege is planing a real Coup d'etat
-
Unless introduced by Bege for his plan, I highly doubt we'll see any new players do anything significant until after the dust cheers. So I don't think we'll be seeing Uroge.
-
Spectacular chapter, one of the funnest I cant remember
Loved the Elbaf hype, was really interested why big mom had a grudge with the giants. All the mob scenes where the strawhats treat the place like a hotel was funny and I loved the tooth solution which I never saw coming.
Also Gangster Gastino for 2017 COTY
-

lol I was just joking about that. But I definitely think that either Crocodile (can't really see how else he can resurface in the story) or Moria (he has to show up somewhere to be relevant for Wano Country) can show up. Not that I expect them to do much, I'm just Saiyan.
-
Seeing Nami wishing that Lola got maried already… reminds me of a recent wedding we have seen in the cover stories:ninja:
Could Lola be married to someone from Shank's crew? -
what if beges Plan is to poison mama via Gangster gastino:ninja:
-

Could Lola be married to someone from Shank's crew?Last we saw Lola she was in Water 7, I doubt she somehow encountered Shanks and crew.
-
After this chapter, I feel like Oda is going full-blown mutiny route with Big Mom. Most, if not all, of the children are going to be swayed by Bege and Pudding to betray her.
And we haven't had a mutiny in One Piece yet, so it might be the time.
And having one of the yonko taken down by destryoing her from the inside instead of just throwing punches would be cool af

-
"Gastino" I'm done dude then proceeds to laugh exactly the same! love him! great chapter.
their plan is soooo gonna fail tho.
-
well it's not the cover but either the first or last page of the jump.
-
Jinbe: Adviser? Helmsman? Negotiator/organizer? Lifeguard? Fish sticks? Mmm, fish sticks…
-
Maybe he's small for a giant. I mean god I hope he is. Otherwise…
Or like the Loki of Myth, he is a shape changer, or conveniently has a fruit power that makes this less squicky.
-
Jimbei will be a nice addision to the sea battles he will really shine when he can do his fish man karate under water, it really is what the crew needs they god too many hammers….
-
I have two serious concerns about this chap.
Diesel's comment about trying to assassinate BG being pretty much impossible, like, does this comment comes from mere fear?? someone else tried it already and failed miserably? or her ability gives her extra resistance against deadly threats? mmhh….
And, if Praline and Chiffon are just fine with BM being killed, how come one of the smartest ones, as Pudding is still siding with BG, I sense the biggest betrayal is going to end up coming from her.
-
I was thinking in regards to giants we have yet to see a giant with a DF, would be pretty awesome to see the royal family of Elbaf with some kickass DF powers, they would be extremely strong then!
-
-
The group shot was amazing, something i always kind of imagined as a kid reading this manga
Wow, time has passed since Luffy set sail and now it comes to such situations, where Luffy has to make alliances with dubious people, while his crew is around him.
Love it, also the fact that in front of Luffy and Chopper are papers from the sweets, Luffy´s cup being already empty ,Chopper having some fancy drink and Capone and Sanji having an ashtray, those details i simply adore. -
And, if Praline and Chiffon are just fine with BM being killed, how come one of the smartest ones, as Pudding is still siding with BG, I sense the biggest betrayal is going to end up coming from her.
I don't think intelligence is a factor in whether you abandon Big Mom. Plus Pudding hasn't been shown to be particularly intelligent, just a good actress.
-
I wonder how Bege's plan will be carried out? Will the operation include a decoy? Does Jinbei get to stamp a name on it? So many questions…
Jinbe: Adviser? Helmsman? Negotiator/organizer? Lifeguard? Fish sticks? Mmm, fish sticks…
I was aiming for sushi, but I'm content with fish sticks. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
-
That cover page is my new background picture.
-
We start this chapter strong, with Pekoms update. His loyalty starts to worry me and how he will affect the plan. The people arriving at night, I wonder what was in their cargo.
-
I still cannot point out how far do Bege's powers go. Was he able to transform the mountain into a castle? Can he produce castles?
-
Chiffon's exposition was huge. I wonder how the party supporting the friendly conclusion feel now after this chapter. A twist could come, but every chapter we are just pushed further away from the idea. One could argue that, Luffy wants to fight Bege but he is working with him, and that could apply on a bigger scale with Big Mom. It just seems kinda forced.
-
Mama's feud with the giants started before Lola ran away. What caused the first conflict? Wano managed to keep the Government at bay, but now we are introduced to the strongest army in the world. What secrets lie in Elbaf? I think someone mentioned about trying to use Chiffon as a substitute, guess that did not end up well. Also, less possibility of Pudding altering Lola's memories and that the latter is just a carefree that thought Mama was not upset.
-
Oh Luffy if you knew what Brooke did, there goes my tooth to Wano thing. Oda decided to resolve the problem using his usual straightforward way. I do hope Sanji leaving the crew is still informed to the other half of the Strawhats.
-
Even Diesel and Brulee got a bath, Capone is not joking around. His disgust towards Bonney gets more depth. The Strawhat's party crashers outfit is glorious. Brooke definitely looks like he will take over the band. Good call on it being Ceas…I mean Gangster Gastino, wow, his real name is just covered, great humor, what an idiot. I guess his new hairstyle does cover his horns. Jimbe I just love every scene you are in. I don't think Gastino should stay with Capone. So he can die when all this goes down.
-
After the scene with the crew trying to save Brooke I cannot stop picturing Big Mom as a video game character. She will go down, and her homies will represent her remaining health, as one of them go into her each time she "dies", also her attack pattern changes.
-
-
I kinda love Bege. I never would have thought I'd say this, he was without a doubt the Supernova I felt least interested in, but man, he has been an awesome presence as a character ever since he shot Pekoms on Zou. I don't think this alliance can end well, since he's just too much of an obvious bad guy, but I think I'll enjoy every second of it, especially with Caesar thrown in there, another great bad guy. It's no wonder the Vinsmokes seem rather bland, with Bege, Caesar and Big Moms colorful family around as bad guys, lol.
I also love the sheer unpredictability of this arc as a whole, which stems from the constant shifting of the Strawhats actual arc enemy. First, we all thought the Vinsmokes would be the actual villains and not Big Mom; when Bege tried to execute Pekoms, it seemed like he was being set-up as the actual bad guy here…but ever since Nami and Luffy were captured by Big Mom and Puddings true nature was revealed, Big Mom has been depicted as the real villain of the story. I can't remember the last time Oda played with our perception like that.
Do you guys still believe that Bege and Pudding are working together, though, now that the Strawhats have teamed up with him? Even though Bege tried to murder Pekoms, Puddings actions actually seem less forgivable. I mean, she mercilessly mocked one of the Strawhats and laughed while talking about killing him. I can't picture Luffy, Nami and particularly Sanji cooperating with her, that would be kinda awkward.
-
That's how things are done, Sanji! Chiffon just showed us what one must seek in family, not that crap of "i'm kind, i don't want… but SAVE THEM LUFFFYYY!!!!". This chapter helped to increase the feeling of him being just a pussy bastard.
The pair of Luffy and Brook was perfect!! All fridges fear those two xD
-
@Uncanny:

Jump on that Carrot train buddy! Just lookout you will get haters saying she is a Chopper clone and has no place in the crew.

I don't see why either approach is bad. Sanji and Chiffon are two different people with different experiences.

I was just sayin' because of my latter acknowledgement of the Women's international day. They deserve recognition, Sanji just happened to be there, being a pussy. I don't have a problem with him, because he exists now to rise my appreciation of everyone else.
-
Both Lola and Pudding have rejected there prince.
Though now Lola still thinks her mom is helpful hopefully we get more behind this.

Sanji wanting to save his family isn't him being a pussy, it's him actually having human empathy and wanting to save lives. Attributing that to cowardice/wangst is laughable.
Now, I fully support Chiffon's decision, all power to her. But just because the two have different approaches to their abusive family doesn't mean one is better than the other.
