Chapter 856: Liar
-
-
So early so fast
-
This must seriously be the worst chapter ever. God, what an awful chapter.
-
Off to read :D….
-
Capone is on the move! Poor Bobbin.
-
Vinsmokes are very naive.
-
his tooth is slowly filling in in the last panel! :ninja:
-
I really liked how Sanji fully lays out his obstacles in front of Luffy, only for Luffy to slap him and make him share how he really feels inside. Really clears up the air of the past 12 chapters. It's got a ton of parallels with Robin, but hey, if the shoe fits, wear it.
-
Hey Galaxy we've been discussing the possibility of the existence of a hidden 'master mind' in the shadows, mostly because Capone and his Tank Pirates don't really look like the can take on the BM pirates(I mean, come on!!), and now that the Vinsmokes don't even seem to be plotting alongside the Tank Pirates it kinda lowers the possibilities for Capone to cause real damage on BM, and therefore there must be someone else, either a big shot or someone who knows a weakspot on BG, or has a plan to weaken her strength much enough she wouldn't be able to keep being on the same league with the other Yonkos.
and so, we need a poll about who this character may be
we already have some candidates;
Katakuri
Pound
Capone Pez(why not?xD)
Perospero(haven't been around in a while)
Gin(lol)
Random Talking tree -
Edit: Oh, damn, I thought Bobbin just collapsed from exhaustion…but shit's about to go down!
-
Sanji's brother are creeps. Whack them good, Sanji when you rescued them from Big mom.
I still don't really care about the whole Sanji leaving the crew drama. But at least now Luffy is now planning to wreck the wedding.
And Sanji deserve that punch.Capone on the move too. I'm pretty excited for the tea party now.
-
The only itneresting thing is the infos we have yet to hear from Jinbe and who shot Bobbins… Something is for sure is going on besides Big Mom and Vinsmokes
-
Aaaw yiss, that last page really hit home for me. Like, "come on dawg, ain't that how it should be?"
We took the long way round to get to this point, but daaawhg. Daaaaawhg. I feel real good.
…It's late. good night everyone.
-
I wonder who this "Noda Skywalker" is that keeps inspiring Oda's cover page creativity.
-
I WOULD say the big shadow in the middle is Urouge and the female-lookin to the right is Bonney ("there can only be one female glutton"), but the middle shadow is missing wings, so drop that. Anyway the left is Capone if you ask me.
Katakuri seems possible, he wasn't with BM and he wasn't in the Meeting room. -
Great chapter. I do like the similarity of Luffy eating and Sanjis mom eating, both saying its delicious food. I also do like very very much Luffy saying: "thats just you"
Single most important sentence of this arc and it explains everything of Sanjis behaviour. Sanji is just Sanji. Too kind to be mean. -
-
Decent chapter, everything seems to be falling into place at last.
Amazing how naive the Vinsmokes are. I'd have expected more insight from a family of top assassins / scientific masterminds - at this point they have logically been informed Reiju was shot and it does not even raise a hint of suspicion? They're not even slightly alarmed that someone here can actually shoot and hurt them. A day before they were intent on taking Pudding hostage just in case and now it's trust all the way. :blink:
On the recent debate of Big Mom's crew being conveniently incompetent so far, we might be looking at an acceptable explanation if it does turns out, as Bobbin's misfortune suggests, that one or more of the ministers and sweet commanders (Potato Starch, whom we have conveniently not met yet ?) were plotting with Capone from the start. That may explain why information is being shut down so efficiently. It's still too early to tell, though.
On Luffy and Sanji's heart to heart, I'm not sure yet what to think of it. I'm glad that it happened at last since it was loooong overdue, however I am slightly offended that Sanji had to be slapped into Crybaby Princess mode for Luffy to be satisfied with the answers he had already gotten anyway. Too many Nami/Robin echoes in there, also. I really, really hope Sanji gets the mother of all character growths after that, because boy did he deny his own feelings. I'm not sure any other Straw Hat was ever that hard to turn around in their moment of crisis.
-
Gin! I Hope But i dont think so.
I think the "Mystery man" is someone we havent seen yet on the Island!
-
@Kaido:
I really liked how Sanji fully lays out his obstacles in front of Luffy, only for Luffy to slap him and make him share how he really feels inside. Really clears up the air of the past 12 chapters. It's got a ton of parallels with Robin, but hey, if the shoe fits, wear it.
It gets even better when you realize two things.
One, Luffy refused to fight back against Sanji the first time they encountered each other in this arc. Luffy finally hit him only when they were alone and Sanji showed that he still cared about Luffy by coming back to fulfill the promise.
And two, Sanji is deprecating himself in this chapter due to having the compassion to want to help his elitist family live. That compassion being the key to why his family abused him so much in the first place. Yet when Sanji is honest with Luffy about how he feels and the fact that he wants to stay despite all of the risks involved, Luffy politely approves despite all of the trouble he's been through this entire arc and acknowledges Sanji's personality without any hint of intolerance. Which reflects how much Reiju and Sora appreciate Sanji's empathy, and how Sanji truly did manage to find a true family who appreciates him for who he naturally is as a human being.
Also, Niji objectified Nami to the point of calling her an "it", with that word even being bolded in the translation. Yeah, they're scum alright lol.
-
As much as I felt uncertain about the Vinsmokes appearing naive and boorish, the contrast between their objectifying and openly misogynistic behavior (going so far as to imply they'd enjoy raping Naming) and Sanji's perverted chivalry is pretty excellent.
Mont d'Or's surprisingly grown on me as the high-ranking administrator dealing with all the family's shit.
-
Yeah, the Sanii drama really didn't do it for me, but Luffy's reactions were great and Bege's coup is now in motion! Oh boy, that's gonna be reeeally interesting to see. And Jinbes knows about it!?
-

I actually mentioned that very same sentiment about Mont-d'Or taking control of his family's affairs 's the spoiler thread lol.
About the Vinsmokes, I agree about the misogynistic behavior but didn't think about how well it acts as a foil to Sanji's chivalry. Damn, that's good. But about the Vinsmokes looking naive, it doesn't get any better when you notice how the Homies have silent quote bubbles to indicate that they're listening in on whatever they're saying. I REALLY hope we don't go for a plot-twist where Big Mom doesn't like them because she heard them talk bad about her. That would be way too contrived. Although the fact that they ARE drunk kind of makes it more… believable?
-
-
I didn't even notice those three shadows on the first read through. It's gotta be Vito who shot Bobbin though. Oda's been making a big deal of his gun ever since he was introduced.
-
The three shadows might be Bege, Vito, and Gotti since they're the only named members of the Firetank Pirates.
-

There is also the possibility that they are somehow aware they're being eavesdropped and are putting on a facade - if for example they're part of the incoming coup, they could have been informed about the Homies' capabilities. However they've been thoroughly portrayed as a bunch of straightforward arrogant types plagued by overconfidence in their superhuman capacities, so it would feel contrived by now if it turns out they were acting all along. :wassat:

it must be Vito or Gotti or some other member , the Boss never do such things he send his men to do the job instead

Nice catch on the silence bubbles, I hadn't picked up on that. I think the Vinsmokes openly discussed similar plans back at an earlier meal with Sanji, where they marveled at the Homie food and cutlery.
It would be an excellent twist if the Vinsmokes were actually aware of the Homie spies and feigning their ignorance but I feel like we'd have seen a hint or two of foreshadowing on that count. I suppose it's both an example of Big Mom's subtlety and the Vinsmokes' arrogance, but I still think it comes across as weakening their ability to be a threat.
-
I hope he gets his tooth back soon.
-
@Ma:

Nah, that center silhouette is very likely Bege. The shape of the shoulder and sleeves matches the way he wears his overcoat.
-

If there's one twist that would definitely wait for the wedding to be revealed, it's the Vinsmoke's counter-plan. I wouldn't be surprised if the Firetank's plot is connected to the Vinsmokes as well.
-
if a back-stabbing fest gets on, I would have a bad time to believe there would be people actually staying with the abusive overpowered parent who eats her boys and wouldn't allow her girls to decide shit for themselves.
Praline said she would choose Aladine over BM, Pudding kinda showed some 'admiration' for Lola's escape and Chiffon should know about what's happening. There seems to be discontent from the gals.
as for the boys, for Opera to not to inform BM about Jinbe's betrayal and Luffy's escape.. well is not direct treason but that is vital info, he will be grounded when everyone realizes he covered up Luffy's escape. -
@Ma:

Eh. I think Bege is the type to not mind getting his hands dirty with these types of tasks. As seen with how he shot Pekoms earlier in this arc even though he could have had somebody else do it. Bege is careful and cunning, but probably wants a front row seat for big scenes to make sure they proceed smoothly instead of placing complete faith in his henchmen. That would make for a decent contrast compared to how Big Mom is getting manipulated by her children due to their fear of her wrath. It also makes sense since he likes to keep a lot of his henchmen inside him for plenty of protective reasons.
Nice catch on the silence bubbles, I hadn't picked up on that. I think the Vinsmokes openly discussed similar plans back at an earlier meal with Sanji, where they marveled at the Homie food and cutlery.
That's exactly what my undesirable prediction was also referencing. I had the exact same issue back then.

Yeah, it seems to be set in stone that the Vinsmokes are just that recklessly uppity. It's a shame since they should be a bit more competent like that while still keeping their personality flaws intact with a reasonable nuanced balance. But then again, it is weird how we have scenes of the Vinsmokes conveniently being clueless without adding anything we don't already know to the story…
-
@Count:

bege always carry entire crew on his body
-
bege always carry entire crew on his body
Just because he carries lots of members doesn't mean he always has to carry every single one. It would make sense if he kept Vito and Gotti on the outside for backup since they're obviously special.
-

Compared to them, Sanji is definitely 1000x better.
But Sanji did kinda grop Nami in Punk Hazard when he was in her body…
And him thinking woman are all pure & should be put on the pedestal is biting him back with Pudding situation.... -

if you DO look at it closely, left shadow fits Bege's silhouette, with the hat and the fat and short body, shadow in the middle fits Gotti's large body and cape, even his right arm with gigantic gun on it seems to be shadowed while his left arm is nowhere to be seen. and last one well, that one is not too distinctive but should be Vito if no one else is participating.

The simplest answer is usually the correct one, and in this case that would be Bege.
We saw him attempt to execute Pekoms in gangland style fashion and now Bobbin's got a bullet in him as well.
I think "hidden master mind" might be a bit of a stretch as well tbh.
Bege obviously has some plot going on but I doubt he's orchestrated this whole situation concerning The Vinsmokes and Big Mom.
I'm not sure if a poll is necessary, although if there is enough demand for one then I'll be happy to put one up.
-
@Count:
Just because we're praising the Vinsmokes being foils does not mean we completely condone Sanji's characterization. XD
But since Sanji is the good guy, him doing that is a good thing in the eye of the young impressionable readers…
-
This must seriously be the worst chapter ever. God, what an awful chapter.
Hahaha, I love it !!!
It's too short, but I do like it. Sanji had his Nami's "help me" moment and Robin's "I want to live !!!" moment. Very nice !!!
-
@Count:
But then again, it is weird how we have scenes of the Vinsmokes conveniently being clueless without adding anything we don't already know to the story…
Wait and see, I guess. Either way, "convenient" is definitely earning its spot as a key word for this arc.
-
This entire arc is actually a nefarious plot by Pekoms and Bobbin. They both stage their murders in order to pin everything on Bege, then when Big Mom kills Bege they rise up in a coup d'etat, overthrowing the Yonko once and for all. Bege never really shot either of them, that was just Bobbin's hypnosis. Bobbin has merely been pretending to be weak in order to fool everyone, and when Luffy confronts him he will nearly bisect the Straw Hat captain. Bobbin and Pekoms will then recruit an army of Mexicans to fight the Straw Hats for the title of Pirate King, including Caesar Clown and the heartless Law. But after they are defeated Blackbeard will still be the final villain for whatever reason, being the progenitor of the bloodline of D.
-
@Kaido:
I wouldn't be surprised if the Firetank's plot is connected to the Vinsmokes as well.
For sure it has to be connected to someone - such as we've seen them so far I can't imagine the Firetank pirates taking up Big Mom on their own. Although if Pekoms was indeed part of/informed about their conspiracy, this would rather point to an insider job - a mastermind from Big Mom's own crew.
Which wouldn't prevent them from making alliances with an outside force such as the Germa, of course. -
So not only does Yonji look like zoro, has green color theme like zoro, but he also like to drink much like zoro.
-
@uniaka:

I'm glad that we finally have confirmation that Sanji eclipses Zoro in strength. Pica was a mere fluke.
-
Luffy's "That's just you, isn't it?" speech reminded me more of his "Shut up! Let's go!" reply to Chopper's rejection of recruitment.
Those last scenes hit me in all the right ways. Good stuff.
-
@Ma:
That's another one.
