Omg that is my worst nightmare ever since that happened to my mom. Manage to get it back? :(

Yeah but it cost so much money
-
Yeah but it cost so much money
That is the worst. I'm so sorry it happened :(
When it happened to my mom it kinda got caught between the grates, so the custodian managed to get it back with a bent-out coat hanger. But the story's always haunted me, I make sure I have a firm grip on things in my hands when I step over things like that now x_x
-
Jag gillar mat och matlagning och ost. Vänta, vem är jag?
I could probably go for it. I mean it can't be harder than mandarin or Arabic.
Probably not harder as a whole. But pronounciation might be weird for you English speakers.
I have heard our speaking being described as being a sing-songy way of speaking.

Or you could just put it on a loop or key chain, right?
-
2/3 of my recent divorce cases have settled, so I am pretty happy about that. Now if only the last one would.

I'm hoping that you are a divorce lawyer, and not just a man in the process of ending multiple marriages.

I'm a divorce lawyer. It's what you become when you do not have dreams as a child.

That's not unfamiliar to me! the English accent from my background country, Trinidad and Tobago, is described that way too. Of course I don't have the accent, but I can emulate it lol. So it'd only be learning another singsongy accent :P But yeah the language seems to have a lot of 's', 'k', and 'v' sounds in particular so that looks like something to get used to.
Or you could just put it on a loop or key chain, right?
My mom had dropped her keychain in the tiny space you step over when you get out of an elevator :P talk about unlucky!
-
I might just get disowned if I learned Swedish before Norwegian. So I'll take a pass.

Well then time to break out the big book of lawyer jokes

I sort of feel like you guys have more of a steady speaking rythm, while ours is more up and down.
But i've only really talked with one Tobagan. That might just've been his style lol.

Just learn Swedish and then suffer serious head trauma.
And voila! You are fluent in Norweigan.

This is exactly it. My relatives go through all variations of these. My mom will be speaking perfect Canadian accent, then she'll get on the phone with her sister and it's suddenly a heavy heavy accent XD it's so fun to witness. My dad goes into the heaviest versions when he's telling a story from back home, and then there's my uncles who always speak that way lol.

That sounds like an enormous gap! How do people not trip over it?

I've come to realize that there is nothing more calming than prepping for a service.
I could start a cult that revolves entirely around chopping onions to find inner peace.
Focus on the mindless repetitive task, be the knife, it's almost like meditation.

I feel that way about minesweeper and sudoku. But significantly less productive, I guess.

Don't feel too bad. After all, all great ideas are bound to have less successful copycats.
Another thing i find very soothing is listening to music in languages i can't understand.
Something very interesting and mentally relaxing about that disconnect you get there.

Punjabi is especially good for that, I've found.

Dude you need to hook me up with some punjabi jams. It shall be my next stop.
So far i've gone from Spanish, to Mandarin, to Swahili and now i've just dipped my toes in Finnish.
-
Well, I don't know Punjabi, so I usually just sift around on Youtube. I have no idea what it means, but the "Chattr Chakkr Vartee" mantra is pretty relaxing.

No no no that's not how you spell 'accountant'

Tonight my school played in the state championship for football…we lost bad, which by itself, I'm only moderately disappointed in, since it's only a game. But two players that I know very well were both severely injured, with one having to be lifted away on a stretcher. I really hope they can recover.
-
This past Tuesday, for the first time since I sought therapy for my social anxiety, I just said "fuck it" and winged it on my presentation in English 102. Though I sounded a bit nervous throughout, I still received positive feedback from my classmates.

Oh so that's where you go. I know a few guys that play for the team you beat in the semis. Hope your players come out of it ok.

I thought you were German for some reason. Oh well that's one more yank for the score sheet.

Wow..The premise of this threads brings me memories, I wonder if we can go full crazy in here…:ninja:Anyway, my father is motivating me to get in the christmas spirit, I personally don't care, but its not that bad, just a little expensive for a "one at a year" thing. Besides garnishing the house, I decided to get back on playing music, specially with that Youtube's "We are number one but [insert edgy meme here]" thingy.
About the past discussions, I always hated hot beverages, maybe is because I live in a hot country, tea is fine though. ;)
Also, english with a brazilian accent is a thing, wow !!

I went to a concert at a musical theatre for the first time today. The event was called A Bach Family Christmas, and features several pieces composed by the Bach family over the past couple hundred years. It's pretty interesting so far, especially since I am a fan of classic orchestration.

You are definitely the Fraiser of our forum tv channel.
In other news i'm tinkering with central European food. The overlooked cousin of European food.
Next stop Hungary. I am sorry in advance for what i'm about to do to your culture Nolus.

Ended up getting a 95 on my chem test, which was way higher than I figured. Took me out of my shitty mood.

That….is a very accurate comparison :)

Bach is great, but Rachmaninoff…Rachmaninoff is in another level.
And tango is like... Even higher.
Today would be the birthday of my mother so I went to a church to pray for her. If everything goes perfectly, I might go to Baltimore in January. About my work in the museum, there will be a celebration for the new year, so I might spend the last day there.

…That is one of the most clever and succinct analogies I have ever seen. Props to you, my good man. Or moderator. It's often hard to know if the latter is merely a title or an enlightened state of being sometimes.

I prefer Mozart, Dvorak, and Mussorgsky. Dat Night on Bald Mountain… Mmmm.
My condolences to your mother. And I hope that museum New Year's parties are swanky.

I also got an unexpected high grade of a 96 in my science class. Science Goes to the Movie. It's basically about analyzing scientific accuracy and consistency in science-fiction films. We even got to watch most of Rise of the Planet of the Apes!
And thank you lol.

Besides Rachmaninoff, I also like Schumann,Strauss, Villa-Lobos, Brahms and, as a accordion aficionado as myself, Piazzolla.
Talking about accordion, (I guess MetaMario will like this, I don't know why…:ninja:) I started to learn how to play "Lost in thoughts all alone" from Fire Emblem in my accordion.:wub:Anyway, thanks for the condolences, I appreciate it and about the museum party, I might bring my father with me.

I. Adore. Accordions. I doubt that I will ever have the patience and capability to play one, but I love listening to them.
Excellent. I hope that your father is a connoisseur of the fine arts. :P

Now my already established concept of you having good taste was multiplied by 1000. And if you want to learn how to play a accordion, I say, go for it !! I know it might sound difficult at first, but with enough hard work you will be mastering it in no time ;)
About my father, yeah, no one deserves to spend the new year all alone, besides, I think he will like.
-
My semester abroad in Japan is about to end and I'm flying back on Sunday… while I have loved being in Japan and am scared shitless returning to this goddamn mess my country has put itself in, I'm really excited to head back home and see my family again. Plus I have a computer science internship in January that's super close to my house and might get me a summer job!

Thank you lol. The only instrument I can play is the trumpet. Which segues into how I am a devout fan of jazz music.
I admire how considerate you are. I just hope that he will appreciate the experience and being alongside you. :)

WOW !! you can play the trumpet ? That is awesome !!
Anyway, in a homage to my mother, I am going to beat Quake while I listen to Blind Guardian/Sabaton (we used to play this game and listen to these bands, she loved Sabaton). And, stop it, I am getting blushed.:ninja:

I only played it for my elementary and high school band though. I unfortunately do not own one yet.
You both have pretty sweet taste. I've listen to few cool covers by Sabaton. My favorite if Twilight of the Thunder God, especially since I'm into Norse mythology lol.
Compassion should be voluntary and mutual. And is a gift that is so simple, yet not easily found in most individuals. No one should take that for granted. I might sound melodramatic, but it's a universal truth.

I see your accordion and raise you one nyckelharpa.
Who's the best fan of obscure instruments now huh
-
The accordion is not an obscure instrument….
-
The accordion is not an obscure instrument….
Do a quick tally on how many guys you knew who ever fiddled with a guitar, drums, violin or piano, and compare that to how many you knew who ever even held an accordion in their hands. I'm not ragging on the accordion, it's a lovely instrument that's in a lot of Swedish folk music, but a top billed instrument it is not.
-
There's a big difference between an instrument being rarely played and it being obscure. Everyone knows what an accordian is and how it sounds. Nobody knows what the hell a nyckelharpa is.
-

Is it really? I mean that in a genuine misunderstanding of terms. Because i tend to use obscure to refer to things that are lesser known and experienced or were known at some point in time but have virtually disappeared from the culture at large. What's the more proper English term for a lesser known instrument/movie/book etc? But yes, either way the nyckelharpa is way less known than an accordion, which makes me the winner of this placeholder for the replacement term for obscure-off

If you like Sabaton's cover of Twilight of the Thunder God I'm guessing you're familiar with Amon Amarth as well?

Well what I'm saying is that the accordion is an extremely well-known instrument, even if it's not a common household item. If nothing else it's got a lot of exposure in cinema and stereotypical images of Italy and whatnot, if not also in a historical context. Obscure implies it is not commonly known. If what you mean is not commonly SEEN (which admittedly fits the more literal meaning of "obscure" lol) then I'm not sure there's a good word for it. Other than maybe uncommon.
-
Regardless of being obscure or not, I still like it, besides the accordion, I also love the double bass and the cello.
