People thought Pudding was telling them about the handcuffs or Zeff in the spoilers thread but I think she's telling them that she's pulling a Lola and is running away. This should be interesting! Great chapter yet again!
Chapter 848 - "Goodbye"
-
-
Big mom has 39 daughters if i remember correctly. Pudding is daughter 35,so she has 4 younger sisters left to be married off. Then there are also a number of grand daughters who are probably around Puddings age as well. So it's easy to find a replacement, germa doesn't care who sanji marries.
But the reaction both luffy and nami gave, along with pudding crying definitely gives the feeling she is going to "attempt" suicide. I don't think she is as naive as lola in thinking big mom won't hurt her if she runs away, she even has a short flashback where bigmom thinks of her as nothing more than a doll.
-

Exactly what I though, the parallel with Lola and her not wanting to make Sanji marry her makes it pretty obvious to me.

Plan B: Let's make Sanji marry Anana.
-
Why should Bege learn a lesson when he's simply doing what Law or Viola did to Doula Mongo?
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Big Mom marries her children as they come, so there's probably no one free besides children (and I think BM has standards for that).
The difference is that Law and Viola betrayed a corrupt nihilistic leader. Capone shot a comrade twice just for expressing compassion, and behind his back as well with a cheap shot. But you seem to be forgetting hiw Sanji and Brook explicitly condemn his actions or how Pekons is supposed to be a character we are at least ambivalent to/supportive of with redeeming traits. Also, Capone spewing all of that garbage about this line of work labeling compassion as a weakness once his kid inevitably gets in danger or taken hostage (which is obvious in how panels of his crying kid are juxtaposed with his hypocritical statements).
I seriously hope that you aren't trying to say that all betrayal is supposedly charismatic or altruistic.

@$abZ:
After Enies Lobby I couldn't imagine any of the SHs doubting Luffy's will to succeed. Robin wanted to die to protect her loved ones, and Luffy basically explained to her (and the others) to cut that shit out… and now Sanji does the same thing.
Unlike Robin though, Sanji has a bit of a crunch against him - Zeff is still alive and one wrong move can get him killed. The Straw Hats aren't his only loved ones in play.
Any moment from the past of Sanji saying "Luffy is the man who will become Pirate King" have gone to shit now.
In what way, though? All of this doesn't automatically mean he's suddenly lost faith in Luffy as a person. One of his flashbacks recently was him telling Luffy his special dream at the Baratie. I will admit this is similar to Enies Lobby, but the situation is a bit more complicated than "Straw Hats will die cause Big Mom is evil". The whole threat of Germa bringing up some inner demons for Sanji? Self-worth?
he fucked Sanji's character up
I'm sorry, but I disagree. After years of being almost reduced to a joke with an over-reliance on heart eyes, perverted antics, and nosebleeds, here you have Sanji actively conflicted with himself and trying his best to make sure everyone he knows can get out of this safely, even at the cost of himself.
He's always been a guy that's done secret plans in the background (Alabasta, Little Garden, Skypiea, etc.).
-
@S.C.:
She really shouldn't, though.
I have a theory wherein Big Mom does get her ass handed to her. I think that Capone is working for Blackbeard and is basically acting like a Trojan horse. I think he has one of the Blackbeard commanders hidden inside his body and he'll use the Tea Party and tametbako box exploding as a distraction to try and take out Big Mom. I've always thought that by EOS all the emperors have to die to make way for the next generation so I don't see why BM would be the sole exception.
-

He's still a believer in that. And he's in this situation now because he does not want his personal demons getting Luffy killed by Big Mom and preventing him from becoming Pirate King.

That's exactly my problem with this arc though. It's not like BM is personally going after Zeff and Sanji should have faith in the man he looks up to that he and the Baratie can take care of themselves. If he did then he and the SH could have taken on BM together and fucked her up so that she knows that she's messing with the future King of the Pirates and then they can take care of Kaido without her being a looming threat in the background.

The Zeff situation is the only half-credible reason for Sanji to go through with the marriage. However if Luffy defeats Big Mom what happens to Zeff then? I expected Sanji to always remain on Luffy's side and understand that it is 9/10 times the winning side regardless of the situation. Also I expected Sanji to know Luffy well enough to understand that even if you tell him to fuck off he isn't going anywhere, and will pull out all the stops to regain Sanji like he did with Robin. All Sanji has done is made it more awkward for Luffy.

I never really minded Sanji being a loved up fool, because it was usually at times when things weren't at knifes edge, but for Sanji to doubt Luffy in any way is going against his character so far. I understand Sanji's past demons are back but still that's not enough reason. I really, really hope Sanji is planning some Mr Prince manoeuvre because that's the slick Sanji I like.

Hopefully once Luffy understands the full situation, we can still get something like this.

Deep down Sanji knows this, he's just in his lowest point right now. But remember that all of this started with the group's separation at the end of Dressrosa, where Luffy trusted Sanji to fire back at Big Mom's ship. He had to assume a leader-like situation, and had to make some calls after to make sure Nami, Chopper, and Brook were safe and secure. Then the Vinsmokes showed up. And at that, his hands were tied.

Really this mirrors everyone's complaints about their forced fight, a slick Sanji is nice but sometimes when your back is to the wall, you can't just Professor Layton your way out of a situation.

Part of Sanji's personality is his protectiveness though. His friends on Baratie dying because of him would pretty much be the worst feeling in the world. And Sanji knows all too well how strong Germa 66 is, especially considering the Baratie cooks' performance against Grand Line washup Don Krieg.

Plan B: Let's make Sanji marry Anana.
No, it has to be Amanda, a swordswoman. If she had a lot of meat, she would be everything the Monster trio desires (remember how they got woken up by Usoppe @ TB).
If Pudding said she is gonna leave, or commit suicide, both roads lead to the same Destination: her death.

I like how Big Mom suddenly isn't corrupt anymore. Never mind the FI racketeering, the human collecting, the island destroying…
And it's weird how Sanji and Brook condemn his actions when he was just following BM's orders. Even Tamago was fine with what Bege did to Pekoms in Zou. Plus, let's not forget that Pekoms, for all intents and purposes, was betraying Big Mom himself by letting the Straw Hats in Totto Land.

To the masters of the timeline, do we know when Lola left Totland and how long they were kept as zombies on Thriller Bark ? Based on Pudding side, her marriage was probably 8 or 10 years ago.

They couldn't even take care of 18 Million Don Krieg.

They couldn't even take care of 18 Million Don Krieg.
Ugh. I just remembered that after I posted. I mean come on for a pirate that travelled the Grand Line you would think Zeff would be stronger than that even though he lost his leg. Who knows, maybe they've trained since then and have gotten stronger. Or hell, maybe he and Garp became friends and he can just call him for help.

Yeah but the same thing happened with Robin back in Water 7. You would think by this point that if Sanji really and truly believed that Luffy would the King of the Pirates he would have faith in him that he would be able to stop BM. I mean how would Zeff and the others feel if they learned that Sanji gave up his dream because they were too weak to take care of some assassins.

I wrote that a few weeks ago, but reading that made me write this again:
What if BM already sent assassins to kill Zeff (just in case). And before they do their Job they had to call via dendenmushi so the murder gets broadcasted to Sanji. Zeff would take care of 'em and tell Sanji via that snail:"Oi, lil eggplant, mind your own Business!"
This would free Sanji from his Situation (and the "debt-burden" on his shoulders)
and it would confirm Zeff's badassery. -
If Pudding said she is gonna leave, or commit suicide, both roads lead to the same Destination: her death.
What makes you assume she'll succeed on that? In my opinion she really wants to kill herself, but she isn't gonna die, that's impossible. This situation is like the opposite of Roméo and Juliet, both Sanji and Pudding, though they are soul mates of each other, are forced on a marriage they don't really want, and the ending too will be opposite, everyone will be free with no tragedy happening.
-

I don't see how his hands are tied. Like I said the only credible reason for Sanji going along with the wedding is to save Zeff, however like I also said if Luffy defeats Big Mom then what happens to Zeff? If he doesn't kill her (which he wont) could she get back up and still put a hit out on Baratie using her influence? Sanji should know that Zeff would slap him upside the head for what he's doing now. He should have had pen and paper ready when Zeff gave that speech on Luffy, because that shit is relevant right now. If you have the future Pirate King on your side you shouldn't be scared of nothing. The amount of near-death situations Luffy has escaped from, the amount of lives he has saved… Sanji seems to have forgotten.
Really this mirrors everyone's complaints about their forced fight, a slick Sanji is nice but sometimes when your back is to the wall, you can't just Professor Layton your way out of a situation.
I'm not saying I want Sanji to be Mr Prince every arc, I'm just hoping that's what happens this time around. What I don't like is characters going against their beliefs. Sanji believes Luffy will be Pirate King yet tries to protect him from Big Mom. Luffy's voyage to be PK includes the Yonko getting their asses kicked, if there was a contract it'd be written on it.

Brook's controlling abused souls stuffed into chess pieces and Pudding's looking to top herself.
Totland's getting darker by the minute.

I want Luffy to just hand Sanji a snail and when he says hello I just want Zeff to yell at him for being a dumbass shit and it cuts to Zeff just standing on a pile of corpses. Honestly I want Sanji and Pudding to get married. I think they'd make a great couple and it might even help Sanji's character growth. Can you imagine if instead of being annoying by being a pervert, Sanji just annoys the other SH's by constantly talking about how beautiful pudding is and listing off a list of all her traits that he likes. At EOS she and Sanji could then take over the baratie with Sanji cooking savory dishes and Pudding making desserts.

Jeez what's with everyone being so death triggery lately? First it was all Pudding is evil and now it's all Pudding is going to die. Given the Lola flashback I think she'll either just tell BM she's not going to marry Sanji or she'll just leave. Given what Nami and Luffy know it makes sense they'd panic cause they know how BM will react but I think she learned her lesson from last time, she's not just going to let another daughter screw up a powerful alliance.
-
Poor Pudding.
Really thinks she's getting away with pulling a Lola, ah youth.

Sanji believes Luffy will be Pirate King yet tries to protect him from Big Mom.
trusting Luffy /=/ expecting him to handle everything
Luffy's voyage to be PK includes the Yonko getting their asses kicked, if there was a contract it'd be written on it.
The Straw Hats are also cut in half and a mob of Big Mom's minions just defeated Luffy. They don't actually have the advantage to boast "okay Big Mom, we're kicking your ass!" right now.
-
I think there are good chances of Luffy actually defeating Big Mom in this arc. The main obstacle is Big Mom's crew, but think about it: Cracker is already down, and Luffy has Sanji, Jinbe, Carrot, Pedro, Chopper, Nami, and Brook by his side. Pekoms would possibly help against her, and Capone too. Most importantly, think about the massive army of natural allies in the books, with maybe some big names in it.
Big Mom's army would get taken care of. All that's left is for Luffy to manage to bring her down.

You are viewing this situation as a reader knowing Luffy has plot armor and won't die. Sanji is being realistic, he knows (not thinks, but knows) Luffy would die here if he had no plot armor. Luffy is captured right now, so having faith in him sounds stupid, the guy already failed.
Zeff is a retired pirate and is missing his leg which is how he fights, so i doubt he can last long against yonkou assassins or germa assassins. -
Sanji knows Luffy can't beat Big Mom though. Even Luffy knows he can't beat Big Mom, that's why he's saying things like I'll fight you some day, as in some day in the future, and he says he's only here to get back Sanji.
When in the future though lol? After he gets Sanji back he's going to go head to head with Kaido. What makes him think that if he can't take on BM that he can take on Kaido? I mean it kind of craps on all the confidence he's had since his two year training where he's been picking fights left right and center only for him to back up and say "Oh yeah I meant all of that, but give me a few more years to get ready".
And if Sanji doesn't think he can defeat BM then that brings us back to the argument of: well how can he believe Luffy can become PK if he can't beat BM. If Luffy really wants to be the most free then he has to have the power to back up his words or else he just comes off as arrogant and cocky.
-
Brook's attack was great, but considering his big entry was teased in the last two chapters, I expected much more screentime for him. I hope Oda won't skip too much there.
Sanji actually believing that Luffy will just leave him there is still disappointing. -
Sanji knows Luffy can't beat Big Mom though. Even Luffy knows he can't beat Big Mom, that's why he's saying things like I'll fight you some day, as in some day in the future, and he says he's only here to get back Sanji.
Sanji has blind trust in Luffy, and Luffy is directly asking Big Mom to come and fight him. So what are you talking about?

Brook was cool but why do I think he's gonna get one shotted next chapter? :P

To be fair doesn't Luffy losing to Big Mom's pirates kinda prove Sanji's point that his crew really does need protecting?
-

The problem for me is I don't see how Sanji is going to do a turnaround unless he gets some kind of confirmation that Zeff is safe, cause right now that's the biggest handicap holding him back.
I also agree that Sanji can't expect Luffy to handle everything, but he should have enough faith in him by now to know that he is the only one that can defeat the emperors. Also, come on, just last chapter Luffy was still telling BM he's going to kick her ass, but again we have another W7 callback where he's not focused on the fighting cause he's to focused on getting Sanji back. This is another scenario where Luffy will only be able to win if he focuses only on defeating BM without having to worry about his crew.
P.S.
For the life of me I can't remember if Luffy knows that Zeff is being threatened or not. -

Becoming PK isn't some 1 night job. It takes time. Preskip the crew believed Luffy will become PK, does that mean preskip Luffy can beat admirals and yonkous? Nope. The crew is also making a lot of preparations for Kaido, they have laws crew, entire mink tribe, wano samurai, and possibly some whitebeard pirates soon. They can't beat big mom with just half the crew, 2 minks, and some fishmen. Don't expect Luffy to beat Kaido one on one either.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---

Luffy clearly said last chapter that he's going to take her down someday when he brings his whole crew, and is only here today to get back Sanji. Luffy saying to come and fight him is just arrogant, cocky Luffy being arrogant and cocky. He's half dead in a cage, he isn't taking on a yonkou.
-
When in the future though lol? After he gets Sanji back he's going to go head to head with Kaido. What makes him think that if he can't take on BM that he can take on Kaido?
Yes, and how is Luffy going to face Kaido? With his whole crew, with a former Shichibukai and his crew, with an army of mink warriors, with the samurai from Wano and maybe with the crew of the former strongest man in the world.
Here he is with half of his crew (missing the strongest members beside Luffy himself) and that's it as far as Sanji knows. You can't blame him for thinking Luffy doesn't stand a chance in this current situation.
-
i still think something is fishy about pudding, oda trying too hard to make her so nice.
as for sanji hes acting like a girl getting married he should be serious atm , if it was zoro he wont act like this.
overall good chapter glad there is no break next week. -

Everyone he's taking on Kaido with it just to handle Kaido's army. In the end the last fight will be Luffy against Kaido one on one. If Luffy really wants to be PK then he has to be able to exceed the strength of the emperors. If not what does his promise to Shanks mean? How is he going to live up to Roger's legacy? Like he told Arlong there are some things he can't do which is what he relies on his crew for, but the thing he can do is kick ass. No matter the odds Zoro has always backed Luffy and I expect Sanji to show him the same level of trust.

It took Roger 3 years to become Pirate King, Luffy is already almost hitting that mark, and no he won't lose to Roger, so yes, he'll defeat Big Mom soon enough and yes he'll become Pirate King soon enough.
It's only people like Kaido or Big Mom that spend their entire lives stuck as Yonkos, Luffy and Roger aren't like that.
Luffy clearly said last chapter that he's going to take her down someday when he brings his whole crew, and is only here today to get back Sanji.
Just like he didn't intend to fight Doflamingo. It's meaningless. Seconds after saying that he told her to come and fight him.

Luffy literally got defeated by the army, proving Sanji's point.

Luffy has been in a pirate for less than 3 years and yet he's already defeated some of the most notorious pirates in the world and made a name for himself by breaking into some of the most infamous government facilites. I do expect him to take on Kaido himself cause that's what it means to be an emperor. Everyone you've listed above is there to take on the various fodder in Kaido's crew, his commanders, as well as the Shogun's forces. Kidd already had his ass handed to him by Kaido so I don't think having a few more bodies helps Luffy all that much. If he wants to be a greater pirate than Shanks and become PK he has to be able to take on the emperors. We already know he has to take on Blackbeard and that motherfucker is going to be a hell of a lot tougher to beat.

Which is what makes it so odd. Was whoever the suitor was a) insulted that BM's daughter ran away cause they thought she thought they weren't good enough or b) they only wanted to marry Lola and wouldn't accept any of BM's other daughters.
-
Luffy literally got defeated by the army.
Getting defeated by an army is one thing (Specially since he was already worn out but this is secondary). But Sanji trusts him blindly, Luffy has pulled out miracles millions of times before and if Luffy were to fight Big Mom one on one, Sanji would bet on him.

So you want Sanji to bet on plot armor?
Never mind all the ridiculous circumstances and coincidences that Sanji is not aware of, but we know that will happen in order to allow them to escape. Sanji would literally need to be omniscient in order to even have a hint that a miracle would happen.
For example, from your own post:
Luffy has Sanji, Jinbe, Carrot, Pedro, Chopper, Nami, and Brook by his side. Pekoms would possibly help against her, and Capone too.
Sanji is not even aware half of those people are present.

I think it comes back to the idea that Luffy is a) being stubborn by not eating and so he's fighting with very little energy and b) he is not focused on the fighting cause he's more worried about what's happening with Sanji and why he's acting that way. I just get callbacks to Roger where Rayleigh told them that he would decimate an entire country's army for talking shit about his crew. I think once Luffy fully understands the situation and what Sanji's going through he'll finally have the motivation to take down BM.

I think there are good chances of Luffy actually defeating Big Mom in this arc. (…) All that's left is for Luffy to manage to bring her down.
I can't see Luffy taking down his first Yonko one on one, and certainly not without the rest of his crew there to feature against all the big hitters in said Yonko's crew.
Also, I think it's way too early for Big Mom to go down in general, since we've still to get the whole Caribou -> Kaido -> war for Fishman Island/Poseidon to still be covered.
