@desa:
Good times indeed. I sure prefered when the demons where simple intimidation and just a a glance to how wild those people could get. Tommyrod probably gave 2 of the best fights of the manga.
Yep. And the best part about the Gourmet Demons were those epic panels/spreads of them figuratively intimidating and consuming the enemy. One of my favorites is the one where the demons of all Four Heavenly Kings surround the Four Beast on a dinner table. Shima's art in terms of surreal scenes was always his forte.

Midora's organization made a pretty good job at counteract the small moral compass the series had. Killing to eat vs useless kills, sharing food vs keeping it to yourself, and he had some connection to the president. I always believed that switching from the main villain you are building up is just a bad idea. It didn't work in Naruto and it does not work in there. I doubt it will work in Academia if the last boss is not Sylar or Facepalm.
Grinpatch sure made a disgustingly great first impression. Dude was slurping rats with a giant mosquito straw. He even try to slurp the wolf with it. I always find Satrjun fairly bland even his powers.
Those gourmet morals remind of back when Toriko didn't go full on DanganRonpa with all of this "despair vs hope/rage" nonsense and Acacia being a douche for the sake of it every two minutes. I will never forget that panel where he talks cheating on Froese with that shit-eating grin in front of Midora. As well as Toriko calling Acacia a "Gourmet Egotist". Although I will be honest, it was humorously entertaining to see how desperate Shima was to make us hate Acacia as a villain.
Starjun was always bland, but I did slightly appreciate how his blue flames related to oven cooking. Grinpatch was just beautiful though. It's such a shame that his battle with Coco got off-paneled. It could have very likely been a Tommyrod-level fight. And oh my freaking God, "Sylar" and "Facepalm" as nicknames for All for One and Shigaraki are beautiful. That literally made my day.
Heracles and Bambina did fine I think. One snotted Toriko, while the other made some great dancing. And their introduction and dealing with the bits of Acacia where pretty good(except maybe the crow). I always loved that the animal kingdom was not randomly dominated by humans and they manged to stay on top of the food chain for almost the entire run of the manga. Never liked that weird obsesion of making the top always human.
I think Shima was making a good job in balancing threatening environment and challenging food with strong beasts so I doubt the eight kings where what stopped him from being as imaginative in the cooking.
Heracles and Bambina definitely did well. Especially with that snort one-shot and dancing. I was only talking about Gourmet Levels and creative ways to obtain ingredients. The cooking and food reactions getting neglected is another story of Shima probably chewing off the fat due to getting rushed.
Great ingredient indeed. I always thought the ingredients level where only supposed to go to 100 originally because by 70 the cooking methods were pretty complicated.
I would agree, but ingredients like the ones we would see in Jirou's Full Course and BB Corn's capture level being immeasurable in Gourmet World gave me a feeling that these numbers would get ridiculous.
That's because he's the best
I can understand for Teppei and his brother. But I think his chemistry with Setsuno was one of the most genuine thing in this manga. When they are together, it just clicks. And their personalities goes well with each other.
You're definitely right about Setsuno. My mind was was acting a bit funny there lol, they had stupendous chemistry. I still wish we could have seen how they met though (especially with young Setsuno rocking that cave girl look). Or anything about Jirou's kid/Teppei's parents.
I think his expression to Toriko as he is talking to his brother or his reaction when he saw the spice conveyed the kind of bonds he had they had without having to hammer fist. The only thing that may be missing is maybe that we never saw him and the president talk in the present. But they are fairly old +500 years and spent plennty times together
Thanks for linking me to that chapter, that was some damn good writing that took me way back to when I was a much more devoted fan. I would argue that the former was mainly just talking about Midora's relationship with Ichiryuu though. There could have been a quick line or two that have a tone of how Jirou himself specifically feels about Midora in terms of how their relationship was. That's reflected in that spice page though by calling him a "small fry cat". But yeah, it seriously bothered me how we never saw him and Ichiryuu together, what their relationship dynamic was like outside of that glimpse in the first link.
I mostly love him exactly because he knew how to not take things to seriously and relax while both his brothers where in some crazy plots. You can find him boozing while about to resurrect Komatsu, or simply having a drinking party on top of a dragon. At the same he is also the guy that will give you pep talks, or always ready to help out, or ready to die if the need arise. And like his brothers he won't accept you talk shit about his power. And his partner is similar in lots of ways.
Seriously I like Jirou because he feels like a guy that lived a a full life and decided to enjoy to his retirement(even his missing teeth points to that) rather carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. He also get bonus point for not having a demon. And while she is not retired Setsuno is similar in lot of ways.
That's because he's the best
Definitely great points. I didn't give Jirou proper credit. His vagabond nature and wisdom were sweet unique traits.
Tommyrod gave some great fight every time he had the chance while Grinpatch had an awesome design. You are talking arc focussed on Sunny?
I'm just talking about arcs where Sunny was a notable player. Like the Regal Mammoth, Reality of Gourmet World, and the Death Falls arcs. And not just because Sunny was in them, arcs that featured Sunny just typically had appealing story, action, and art coincidentally. Although I really like all of the arcs pre-Four Beast to great degree.
I think Midora was supposed to be a selfish eating machine so I don't think healthy relations would work well. I can understand wanting to see the president with Midora but for Jiro I doubt there was ever a good timing. As the head of the villains Jirou probably would not have gone there and by the time they could meet the author killed him prematurely.
Reason Midora's obsession's work and not Obito's. Midora still seems to have some feelings for his brothers although they did not take priorities. He also had a childhood that explained how little he trust the word and how important Frozhe's cooking was in a word where he was always hungry and found no affection. It not to hard to imagine he would close up as a result of losing her. Obito's was both bad and ridiculous.
I'm not saying Midora is the best. Just that in terms of character's depth he is the only one with some real one.
Nothing should ever be compared to Obito's obsession's. That the manga biggest conflict stems from that irrational thing bothers me even today.
He didn't need any healthy relationships. Just more insight into stuff like him and Jirou meeting in the present (although like you said, there was never really proper timing for it) and getting to know more about Starjun's upbringing and why he respects Midora so much.
I didn't mean to say Midora's motivation was as bad as Obito's or even bad relatively though lol. I would never make such a serious comparison. I was just talking about the vibes feeling similar, but Midora's was much more satisfactory in explaining his modern perspective in the world. He is the only one that has real substantial depth.
I just talk about Sunny though because, unlike Coco and Zebra, he has a few moments of nice depth. They're rare, but still there. And are very surprising to see due to his personality seemingly being fixated on superficial beauty. Like when he talks with Komatsu during the Regal Mammoth about how while ugly things disgust him, what truly disgusts him even more is corruption on the inside that spurs people to hunt/kill without purpose. Or his brief flashback during the Tommyrod fight of how he broke one of Ichiryuu's pottery and was worried that he would get punished, but instead saw that Ichiryuu was reassured to see that Sunny wasn't hurt too badly. Moments like that really stuck out for me with his personality dynamic, as well as caring about his sister.
Shima have taken any enjoyment I could get from Sani. But the same can't be said of the 3 brothers who received a decent treatment(except that Jiro's death) and I know I will enjoy it. I would hate for Acacia to be at that table, Frozhe is cool and Setsuno necessary.
I can respect that. But Jirou's death in such bad taste. Especially when reading the chapter of Acacia's redemption and seeing those sympathetic flashbacks. It was all such BS. While I was reading that, all I kept thinking about were these pages:

But I bet Acacia will be at that table. And get along with Starjun, the son he killed, just because. At least through some sort of nod, it doesn't even have to be words.[[
