Does Oda always have to hammer home what a noble and liberal image he has of piracy compared to the rest of the world?
Chapter 827: Totland
-
-
Pudding is really giving me The Witch from Hansel and Gretel vibe. She is stuffing them full of food. Is seemingly nice but feels like she might have something to hide (and not just her third eye). Also her reluctance in letting the Straw Hats leave is a little suspicious.
I am loving the way this arc is building. It really feels like Oda is back in his stride. Every chapter has the right amount of plot development and entertainment. Not to mention the art style of Totland is fantastic. It is really feeling like Thriller Bark. Not in style, but just in the fact that is seems hyper stylized to fit a genre. I really am interested to see how Pudding plays out in this arc.
My random theory is that maybe Nitro the Jelly is the one really pulling the strings with Pudding. Maybe he keeps tabs on her for Big Mom, or he has some sort of power that we are unaware of.
Also can anyone clear up some confusion for me, some people are saying Purin and some people are saying Pudding. Did I miss something?
purin means pudding in japanese
-
Does Oda always have to hammer home what a noble and liberal image he has of piracy compared to the rest of the world?
Equal rights for all races
Equal swords through your body if you dont give the sweets
-
Just see what Carrot is up to in the last panel on the right. Smh
-
Pudding marrying Sanji and sailing with the Straw-Hats would be great.

Does Oda always have to hammer home what a noble and liberal image he has of piracy compared to the rest of the world?
Yes, it's his duty to do so.
-
Btw who thinks Puddin has eaten mystical Zoan model Shiva (who is often portrait with three eyes)?
-
Don't spoil other shows like that. How do you know everyone has seen the episode?
Maybe she can see through her creations, but I doubt it. That's a little too much.
And if she can, then Pudding looks like an idiot who doesn't even know what SH looks like, even when she's marrying his crewman. Not to mention Pudding (if she's a three eyed girl) has heard Luffy talk over the phone, when he uttered literally the same words he did in this chapter.
Puddin reacts when Luffy says his name and that he will be Pirate King.
Pretty sure that's she understanding that he's the captain of her fiancé. -
Nami, Brook and Chopper were still inside Capone when we got to hear Charlotte Pudding's name, right ?
Why don't they react to Pudding's name in this chapter ? -
There is so much to unpack in this chapter so I am just going to spout a stream of conciseness.
1. Was not expecting to see Pudding introduced and meeting Luffy so fast.
2. Pudding is really giving me The Witch from Hansel and Gretel vibe. She is stuffing them full of food. Is seemingly nice but feels like she might have something to hide (and not just her third eye). Also her reluctance in letting the Straw Hats leave is a little suspicious. And I might be reading too much into this, but even the way she her face is shaded when she is bashful is much more ominous than lets say Chopper. Not to mention her sentences end with the heart symbol that gives a sort of "fake" sweetness. I am not saying she is evil, just has more layers….much like a wedding cake.
4. Also Big Mom being an equalitarion is really interesting. I feel like she is doing what Donflamingo was pretending to do in Dressrosa. It is also a nice change of pace from the other Yonkou and is a nice contrast to Kaido.
5. This makes total sense about why she was in control of Fishman Island and why Jinbei joined her. I hope that Oda gives us a little bit more of a glimpse into her politics and relationships to the island she rules. I have a feeling she doesn't take island by force, but rather sells them on the idea of this utopia, all rainbows and sunshine, but once she has them hooked then she extorts them and reveals that dark side. I feel like there might be some parallels here to the way Big Mom runs her island and the interaction with Pudding. I also really like Pudding as a potential new nakama, so I might be stretching in the attempt to find a more dynamic character.
6. Along with the politics of ruling there seems to be a lot to discover about these chancellors and the rulings of different islands. I have a feeling that each of Big Mom's kids might "have" an island that is theirs.
7. My random theory is that maybe Nitro the Jelly is the one really pulling the strings with Pudding, the fact that he didn't speak and is literally looking over her shoulder gives me that impression. Maybe he keeps tabs on her for Big Mom, or he has some sort of power that we are unaware of. I love his hat. Reminds me of a private detective.
8. I am curious if anyone and everyone can live on these islands? And are you protected by Big Mom once you cross into her boarders? This touches back some of my favorite parts of One Piece, When Oda really gets creative and goes deep into an islands structure. We are already seeing a taste of it (no pun intended) with the different laws surrounding what you can and cannot eat. I would love to know more.
9. Its obvious that Pedro will play an important role, but for life of me I have no clue what role or purpose he is serving right now. All he has done since his introduction has threatening to fight potential threats and say "What fortuitous luck." I am not complaining, I am just waiting to see why he is part of this arc. I think it will be connected to this mink "traitor". It would be crazy if either him or Carrot are somehow involved with/are the traitor. It's too early to know, but from a story telling perspective it could be fruitful.
10. I think that Pekom's story arc is going to end with him returning to his family in Zou. Not that I ever thought he was going to return to Big Mom, but with the stealth mission already a bust, he is quickly becoming recognized as a traitor.
Woohoo One Piece is back baby!
-
Nami, Brook and Chopper were still inside Capone when we got to hear Charlotte Pudding's name, right ?
Why don't they react to Pudding's name in this chapter ?I guess they just didn't hear it.
That sword girl with the large hat who acquired the eggs. Maybe she ends the sexism debate of "OP not having strong hot girls".
Iva's cover story is interesting as well. Does he make preparations for an important visit? Dragon maybe?
yeah, exactly what i thought about the girl with the sword. hope she's strong and hot, and doesn't fall in love with everyone or has a sexist DF.
and yes, Iva is probably making preparations for the meeting Dragon talked about. Can't wait to see all the Revos at Iva's kingdom :ninja:
-
Great, Great all around stuff. I hope Purin being a chef (specialized in sweets, but a chef nontheless) and so obsessed with how she creates food and delighted that people might enjoy it ends up giving us some quality interactions with Sanji. I really hope it happens. Imagine these two cooking together for a competition, Sanji in charge of the main meal, Purin in charge of the dessert. . .
Everything in this chapter was awesome. Can't wait till we see the three shadowed silouetted fellas. They look beyond cool.
-
Actually if Sanji doesn't marry Pudding I'll get very disappointed.
-
The fact they aren't the same in katakana is part of my question (sorry, should've been more specific)
Basically are they calling the girl we meet here Pudding instead of Purin, which is the name used for Big Mom's daughter.
I haven't seem the raw but preeety sure it would say プリン (Purin) as that's the word for it in any which way you want pudding.
Her name is PUDDING in English.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Actually if Sanji doesn't marry Pudding I'll get very disappointed.
Unless she turns out to be some evil psycopath or is a very angry girl if brought out
Which I do definitely hope not, I mean she just seems genuinely nice so far.
-
Totally the vibe I got -
@Bond:
The kana says "Purin". Viz has it translated as "Pudding".
I'm not an expert on translation so I don't know why it's this way, but whatever the reason, it's the same reason we have "Big Bun", so I don't mind. Not sure if anyone addressed but pudding is an imported English word into the Japanese language
E.g.
! スマートフォン = Smart Phone, but each character is sperated and pronounced Su maa to Fo n.
! Pudding can be read pudding like this プディン (Pudin) but the vocab the japanese selected is Purin (プリン). Maybe CCC or Foolio can explain why better because プディン makes sense but it's not used -
Well we've had plenty of nice female characters come up before at new points in the story (i.e. Conis, Caimie), including ones Sanji was attracted to like Viola, haven't seen anything special about Pudding nor anything about the future of One Piece that makes it essential for her to be married to a Strawhat though.
Hancock: "I wanted to marry one first!" -
is that Big Mom in the last page????
-

Yeah, that got cleared up for me a bit ago. Thanks, though. I between the possibility of lookalikes like "Lola" a couple chapters ago and Mangastream's apparent flip flop on the name (I'm 99% sure they used Purin before now) I thought maybe we were seeing a possible example of that. But between their actually using Purin after all in Japanese and the wedding (which I overlooked initially) I know I was off on that one.
-
This is absolutely the worst chapter to read while being on a diet.
-
Does Oda always have to hammer home what a noble and liberal image he has of piracy compared to the rest of the world?
What are you talking about? Most of the pirates in the series have been underhanded antagonistic brutal douchebags. Arlong was a pirate, Krieg was a pirate, Kuro was a pirate, those candy pirates that CP9 trashed in their cover story, those fake strawhats right afer the time skip, caribou, everything about Kaido, Big mom burns down whole countries for not getting sweets.
"Noble" pirates are a clear minority in the series. Big mom's followers are clearly just giving a biased outlook due to benefiting from her rule.
-
I gotta say i expected huge momma to look a bit more freakish, a little dissapointed there. But i expect she'll grow on me.
And the disney land after dark motive is pretty fun. Feels maybe a tad similar to dressrosa in some ways.
But i expect that feeling to drop of as soon as we start exploring some more of huge momma's empire.

You say this like the exact wording of the name is important and the point wasn't "the character is named after this". In an arc with dessert references literally built into the background.–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Just compare what kind of emperor was Whitebeard and what kind of emperor is Big Mom… It's really shame.
Awesome, I hope you stop reading.
I'd thought most of the Water7 jump on types had been lost by this point, guess not. -
@Buggy:
is that Big Mom in the last page????
I can't believe this is even a question.
-
Does Oda always have to hammer home what a noble and liberal image he has of piracy compared to the rest of the world?
1. What image of that did you get from the chapter where the smiling dancing utopia was revealed to be built on blood and pillage lol.
2. How have you been following along for eighty-three damn volumes and still think of the meaning of "pirate" in One Piece as being identical to real world meanings. It has NEVER been. Pirates in One Piece are broadly freewheeling vagabonds who live outside of society. Some of them are nasty villainous bandits, others are mischievous thieves, and others are heroic adventurers. In the One Piece prototypes Oda even went out of his way to make two types of named pirates to indicate this difference, but clearly dropped it because of how on the nose it was. Evidently though he maybe should have kept it for oblivious people like you who actually think Oda is some sort of clueless idiot whitewashing actual piracy.
3. If you think Big Mom's diversity thing isn't a dark joke waiting to happened about gathering ingredients or something I have to doubly question your reading comprehension. -
New arc, new theories :)
-
Its pretty sure that the count of the islands has to do with the count of Big Moms daughters.
-
I also believe that the Nitro, the smile thingy of "Purrin", has the objective to surveil the daughters.
-
Then its also not a surprise that Big Mom already knows that Luffy is there.
-
With the "Lola"-clone in mind, the probability that there are daughters which have a similar appearance to Purrin is very high.
-
I wonder why people still try to see Purrin as a good character and still talk about the marriage, and even joining the straw hats. But yeah, its like that with every new, awesome char ^^
-
Big Mom is truly evil and its interesting that a lot of people don't want to see it like that.
-
Everything is too shady to still think about it positively.
-
Pedro will have a key role in delegating the minks on the island for an upcoming clash between the straw hats and the big mom pirates. Pekoms will stand them by, hopefully.
-
Jinbe will have this role for the fish men and mermaids, too. But he will also resolve the things he talked about in the fishman island arc and will surely support luffy and co.
-
Germa 66 will also support the straw hats. Not initially but in the progress of the clash.
Conclusion:
- Sanji will not marry someone. He loves women in a superficial way but I expect that he has a strong will to choose his real girlfriend by himself.
- The dream of Big Mom will not be under her under these cruel and selfish conditions. It will be for the whole world of One Piece :)
-
-
Watch as this utopia turns out to be her plan of gathering every single edible creature and species in one place :ninja: Big Mom's One Piece right there!
-
Honestly, I think my favorite part is that Nami has finally given in to the insanity that is Luffy. No more shock at where he's gone or what he's messing up or even getting mad about it. Just simple acceptance.
Also, I'm in love with the styles going on here. I wouldn't ever wear anything so short, but I would definitely wear everything Nami, Carrot and Pudding are wearing!
-
I did not understand this chapter on so many levels.
-
So what has Sanji been doing these past few days?
He was about 3 days ahead of the crew but from the sounds of it he is only now arriving at whole cake which is only 1 day away from the crew.
He has yet to meet Big Mom, which also makes me question if he has even met Pudding yet. Vito did say he would get a few days to get to know her, but Pudding sounds like she was busy working at her cafe the whole time instead of preparing for the wedding.
The 2 vinsmoke siblings were a few days behind just like the crew so I don't think they have met him yet either. It is still unknown if the 2 remaining brothers and father are at Whole cake or the reverie.Basically it sounds like he hasn't interacted with any of the key characters for this arc yet even though he should have arrived 3 days ahead of the crew. The only exceptions being his unknown family members since we don't know where they are atm.
-
Great chapter to introduce us to Totland!
Was already hoping it would be like the Cockaigne myth. It didn't seem like a stretch since we already had a Whole Cake island, but now we also have different races and you can eat from the houses anytime, realy an abnormal utopian society. I love it!Don't know if this has been said before but I can't help but see a connection in the numbers here:
- There's 34 islands, each ruled by a counsellor
- Pudding is the 35th daughter of the Charlotte family who is getting married now, and to who? Yes, to someone with a connection to Germa 66, who don't posses any land as we learned last chapter.
Now I don't know if they want any land cause they already got an awesome den-den-mushi ship complete with a castle(lolz), but maybe Germa 66 getting an island is part of the deal. They can get resources from Big Mom too like that.
Big Mom would add a 35th island to her territory and will be able to use their technology.
Germa 66 get to rule it and they are also under Big Mom's protection. If Sanji(a pirate) becomes the counsellor they can avoid trouble with the world government and keep it under the radar.Anyways I'm sure there is a bigger picture to this wedding. Obviously Big Mom like any other yonko always wants more power, but she might be scheming something with the Germa 66. Maybe the same reason Kaido is making a giant Zoan army.
Of course there doesn't need to be a bigger cause, but I have the feeling it wil all connect.
Would be awesome if we get a big war between 2 or more Yonko. It would certaily give the "vs. Yonko arc" another meaning!
(War for the red Poneglyps! Anyone?).p.s.: Pudding will probably go live on the new island too. Seems like she doesn't even need her shop anymore(she was not mad at Luffy for eating it all).
-
I don't know if anyone has thought of this yet, but what if the okama are preparing for the arrival of the Revolutionary Army that escaped Baltigo? Seriously what else could it mean? Oda wouldn't show us them preparing for something unless it was majorly important. It's not like oh the people on Skypiea are growing pumpkins. It's something more.
Oda continues to surprise by having the crew already meet Purin. I've gotten so sick of new nakama talk that I argued with someone about why Purin wouldn't join, and I made some assumptions on her personality and dynamic with the crew. I don't know why I bother making assumptions because they can always turn out to be wrong (like I thought there was no way Oda would kill off Ace since he doesn't kill. Oops…), so Purin does seem pretty cute. But she totally still won't join...
If Big Mom's powers are indeed to give life to inanimate objects, then wtf was that sun and rainbow? Cos that's obviously not the real sun and she couldn't have touched it. Imagine if she somehow touched the real sun and throughout the rest of the series the real sun shined with a big smiley face like the baby from Teletubbies.
It was pretty cool for Oda to sneak in a longneck into the background, but assuming Moria is one we've already seen one before. How could he not be? We saw him when young without a neck but I'm guessing as they get older their necks grow. Or is Moria just a freak that possibly went through surgery to look like that?
-
Just saw the angry birds movie, and a lot of the Purin arguments here now makes it look like a nest of angry birds

Im just saying i dont expect her to be night black on the morals scale

You say this like the exact wording of the name is important and the point wasn't "the character is named after this". In an arc with dessert references literally built into the background.I think you misunderstand me. I prefer having her name translated to Pudding, just like how I prefer "Big Bun" over "Big Pan".
The reason I'm unsure is because it's not entirely consistent, as in the case with Kuma. It seems like the English word is used only if the Japanese word is close enough in pronunciation.
-
And my thoughts on the fly as reading this chapter
-
Chocolatown is waaayyy to perfect to not have something behind it…. Just like Dressrosa was.
I like the fact that Big Mom has this really happy and fun side along with the 'I'll chop off the heads of your loved ones' side. The contrast is gonna make for some funny panels of her threatening someone with a rainbow smiling on her shoulder or something like that.
-
Chocolatown is waaayyy to perfect to not have something behind it…. Just like Dressrosa was.
Exactly. I'm waiting for them to find Hansel and Gretel tied up in the back of that chocolate shop.
-
When I saw Big Mam singing I thought of this song. Anyone who remembers A Troll In Central Park, would know what I am talking about. But yeah, she just screams a 90's animated Renaissance villain.
-
Very interesting chapter… I don't really like the disney theme.. but Its shady and cruel in the same time.. especially those final BIG MUM words...
I think that Pedro is workin' under Kaido.. And that The Alligator/Snake looking mink is a Kaido Spy too... with some other agents... that will be introduced later.. Because otherwise it makes no sense for me... Maybe Pedro will try to kill Carrot... (Like, he'll tell her to follow him somewhere so he could tell her and then.. he push her from a rooftop or something lol /SMH
OH and yeah... Capone's wife or w/e she is, is LOLA! not a lola clone. and Pudding Is Pudding... she's not another person. it's the same person... ;) Sanji's Wife ;) La promise ;) in other words.. NEXT NAKAMA :D
Question: WHERE IS JINBEI?
-
BM reminds me of Ms. Endive
-
DONT FORGET ABOUT THE "PRESENT" THAT WAS SENT TO BIGMOM FROM FISHMAN ISLAND lol
-
BM reminds me of Ms. Endive
Except Big Mam is less bitter and cold.
-
Hmm, 34 islands surrounding Whole Cake Island, 34 married daughters. 35th daughter is marrying a organization/Royal family that has no land. The islands are made out of sweets. Too many coincidences.
I'd say Big Mom is capable of making islands.
Maybe Big Mom really will end up being Luffy's ally, and after Luffy destroys Fishman Island, Big Mom makes a new island for them where they can join everybody and live in harmony. That's all the Fishmen ever wanted, right?
Starting to like Big Mom now…
-
I'm curious about that cover… the Newkamas preparing for the visit of...?
Also, I am confused with the timing here and too lazy to look back, but this cover story takes place one week before the Baltigo fight, right?

I thought it was them just looking at Sanji's wanted poster.

Just noticed the carpet is called Labiyan > Rabian > (A)rabian.
I thought it was them just looking at Sanji's wanted poster.
The visit part I made up in my mind, so ignore it, but the legend of the image says "Preparation". Iva is even decorating the table at the other newkama supervision.

That's right. They're presumably preparing to depart for Baltigo.
-
35 islands in one big spot? Sure you need that new Log Pose to travel NW. The theme of Linlin's backyard was very shocking, it gives me the creeps, to much covered happiness to handle. She's ugly as hell too!
Luffy found another princess in the arc and Brook showed the gentle way to look panties, sipping tea.

he could just poison one of her carrots no need to actually kill her lol.

That's right. They're presumably preparing to depart for Baltigo.
Like I said in a post just before, it's most likely the Revolution Army is coming to Kamabakka Kingdom, not the other way around. Why would they be discussing where to put a vase of flowers if they were the ones departing? They're trying to impress guests who are coming to them. They're clearly not on a ship.
