Aside from all the flaws this show has, one of my biggest issues with this show is David Tennant. There was absolutely nothing wrong with his performance as he was a ton of fun to watch BUT… there were way too many problems with him being the Purple Man in general.
For one, it was VERY hard for me to be disgusted by the guy. The show did an excellent job in portraying him as a terrible sociapathic repulsive character but I absolutely cannot find myself hating him (and that's probably because it's David Tennant playing him). It's hard to point the fault at Tennant since he did an excellent job, but I think I find that he's too type casted at this point (maybe?). Not to mention he has those big puppy dog eyes so you end up (episode 8+ spoilers)
! actually occasionally feeling bad for him when he gets betrayed, punched in the face, and electrocuted…even though I DON'T think you're supposed to feel bad for him? It's hard to say what emotions the writers were trying to evoke from the audience for this guy.
I just wish they picked someone charming BUT also slimier so it's easier to hate him. Kinda like Andrew Divoff if he were 10 years younger or something.
Not to mention, I kinda wish the writers didn't constrain Tennant to much. Yeah I know he's supposed to be a bit more subdued and grounded but at the same time I wish he was portrayed slightly more theatrical and over the top such as like in (episode 12 spoilers)
! when he showed up on stage and started just goofing off for a brief moment before sending Luke after Jessica I mean yeah he does have his goofy moments, but most of the time I felt he was too restrained.
Oh and the biggest beef: Final Episode spoilers
! They killed him off. Gwaaaah! No more David Tennant or Purple Man in the MCU . Honestly though, it would have been interesting to see him use his powers in a more grander scale, but he really kept it to a minimum for most of the show which is a real bummer as I feel they could've done a LOT of creative stuff with it…especially since the climax was remarkably..."meh". I mean they were REALLY building up his power boost for the last few episodes and it ended up being kinda underwhelming. Not to mention his death was really..."meh" as well. It makes sense in the context, but still...c'mon. They could have done something more climactic or thematically satisfying. I was hoping they would keep him alive and utilize him as one of the big bads in the Defenders by having his powers used for a lot more chaotic grander scenes. After all, his powers could have totally made for some really awesome moments, but they were REALLY kept at a minimum for obvious reasons.
! If anything, I felt they were kinda building him up to be a bigger bad much like they did with Fisk in DD, but I guess not. Tis is a real shame
Additional gripe: I really don't like any of the secondary characters in this one save for Trish and Luke. Everyone else was either remarkably annoying (that crazy red haired girl in particular…my gawd) or just downright unpleasant (Hope in particular).
