! - Oda gets annoyed when the editor calls him Oda-sensei. Oda doesn't want to be respected too much.
Oda listened to the editor's advice that Cavendish should get more angry when his horse was defeated.

always wondered if pages were A4 in size. Oda said in an old SBS that he uses a G-pen but to get so much detail in his characters with a G-pen is quite a feat. His assistants draw with such detail as well! those speedlines are less than a millimeter thick and they only get thinner! unbelieveable!
^^ Some screenshots from sandman's video: http://imgur.com/a/7dGCq#0
those huge hannyabal and enel face posters are a must have!
You can't call a rivalry since those 2 series aren't running together and OP is one of those series out there inspired by DB.
Rivalry was a bad word choice, but I feel like he got motivation from Dragonball and maybe learned what he didn't like from it too
I need subtitles for that video

Arigatou Gozaimasu for the pictures but is there no video Interview. I just can't believe it
Mr.Sugita, the 8th editor of One Piece says the series is about 70-80% complete
source: http://getnews.jp/archives/1050895
That's. . .kinda crazy? We've yet to even touch any of the yonkou, we've just seen how many of the supernovas will be involved in tons of shit, we've yet to see 2 of the 3 weapons of mass destruction, we've yet to land on Zou, then Wano and we should go to Elbaf somewhere down the line, the 25 shadow brokers are still in the shadows, 1 admiral left, 1 Shichibukai left, Croco, Moriah, Enel, Buggy and like 100 characters still need to comeback to the story, we still need to bring Dragon into the fray, the uber Lost History flashback, the final war, the Reverie. . .
. . .all of that combined will be only 20% of the manga? Hard to believe. I'd say Oda still has a decade left of manga IF he goes real fast and cuts a lot of corners, but the amount of content still left in this manga is just too big to accept we're "80% done".
I don´t take those "completion" estimates seriously anymore, they are way too vague and will probably not hold up anyway considering Oda´s eagerness and his seemingly endless stream of inspiration. Iirc, in the middle of Punk Hazard arc, there was an interview in which Oda claimed the story was 60% done and now, i guess 130 chapters later it´s 70% now, while we still have not dealt with any of the Yonkou, the 7th Shichi, Vegapunk, Elbaf, Wa No (might of course end up being Kaidou), Dragon and the Revos and of course the final arc and if Dressrosa is any indication, the arcs seem to get longer, so….
I think in 2013 Oda also said One Piece could still last 10 years.
Especially if we keep in this same pace in arcs like Fishman Island, Punk Hazard, and Dressrosa.
Well, Dressrosa had a lot of different objectives compared to other arcs before while FI and PH were not really slower than pre-TS arcs like Skypeia or Alabasta
As with all long running series, I've come to the idea of "the series will end when it does". Look at Naruto, at times it seemed like it was close to ending, then there were questions about what was going to happen next, then it suddenly ended. Bleach will be the same way for the most part.
We can get an idea of how far into the series we actually are since Oda has given us the end goal and what needs to be tackled before the series ends. The fact we haven't even gotten into the meat of the New World makes me not believe that we are that close to the end. Things are being propelled forward, so in story time it will be overall short. I can see all these big things happening and changing within the span of a month or so after this arc. I think once Big Mom and Kaido are out of the picture, we can be close to the end game. For now, we might be 60% through. Unless Oda really picks up the pace, which if Dressrosa is anything to go by, the opposite is more likely to happen.
well i think that 70% is a correct estimation..80% seems a bit too much
70% is not really unbelievable really. Let's say it's 70 percent as of chapter 794. That would mean that, at 100% completion, there would be 1134 chapters (very rough estimate of course). With another ~400 chapters, the new world would have also lasted for over 500 chapters easy.
Again, not that unbelievable.

source: http://getnews.jp/archives/1050895
Look at the conext!! Sugita is just assuming that, since Oda mentioned at some point that he reached the halfway point with volume 60.
OPP has translated the interview, http://onepiecepodcast.com/2015/07/20/working-with-eiichiro-oda-an-interview-with-one-piece-editor-suguru-sugita/
Q2: How far along is the story right now, percentage-wise?
A: He told me that the first part of the story, the part prior to the time-skip, was around halfway through. That was about 60 volumes, so maybe we’re at 70%? I don’t think it’s at 80% yet. Something like that.
This makes more sense, i apologize for the misinterpretation..
I'm glad the issue is cleared though.
Unlike with Naruto and Bleach, we know that when the One Piece is found, the manga will reach its final stage.
How long that will be depends on what Oda meant when he said the final arc will be greater than Marineford.
I'd say 50-55% range, MAYBE even 60%
@zeff:

I'm glad the issue is cleared though.
yeah, sounds like more of an unsure estimation…..
Also, lucky bastard, he knows how One Piece ends......
I'd say 50-55% range, MAYBE even 60%
You really think OP is going to keep going for another 15 years?
Oda already has health problems from non-stop working as it is, he'd be dead long before it was over at that rate. One Piece has 5-6 more years in it, tops.
Also, lucky bastard, he knows how One Piece ends…...
I don't see it as lucky. Without presentation behind it that knowledge seems more like a "snape kills dumbledore" level of story-ruining spoiler.
"Oda-San likes physical objects" - well we all have our little hobbies, lol.
One Piece has 5-6 more years in it, tops.
You just replaced a very logical guess of how much time in real years we have before the end of the story with an entirely impossible quess, given the amount of story that still has to be told. So we have two and a half Dressrosas more and that's it?
I would estimate One Piece is about 35% done with the story.
A press conference was held today to announce the production of ONE PIECE Super Kabuki.
!
!
!
! Here is Oda's comment.
"When I asked Ennosuke, "What is the boundary between Drama and Kabuki?", he answered, "Every behavior is beautiful in Kabuki."
I have never drawn ONE PIECE beautifully.
In short, ONE PIECE Super Kabuki is the collaboration between pirates and beauty.
I wonder how pirates will become beautiful through Kabuki.
After getting a glimpse of their work, I can't help expecting that this Kabuki will be awesome.
Of course, you will definitely like the talent of Ennnosuke Ichikawa!!"
Oda really loves his Kabuki, we will get something damn big from him once we reach Wano Kuni.
Oda´s fingers must itch already to finally draw that Kabuki-styled arc.
I personally have nothing to do with that, but knowing Odas passion for it, i somehow can´t wait how he will eternalize it in his story.
Not necessarily 15 but I'd imagine around 8-10. His health issues can or could be contained and improved. I imagine he loves OP just as much as we do lol. One has to be alive to finish it.
A new book called "Jump Ryu" (ジャンプ流) about Oda regarding how to draw manga will be available on 1 October in limited areas in Japan. It also includes a DVD. The price is 1290 yen.
!
! By the way, Vivaldi on Oro Jackson forum made a great statistics sheet about Oda and ONE PIECE.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1G9pJNaydtjo0SfkzqeRo6_RIrEV-6Oolh-1wze9aq6Q/edit#gid=879026373 http://orojackson.com/threads/one-piece-and-weekly-shonen-jump.14721/ @Strawhat:
Do we have any other quotes from him on the subject?
Oda:
! - I spend a whole day deciding what to draw in a colorspread. I sometimes ask people around me.
! Edoe
- It bothers me which color to choose when drawing a colorspread. I copy my illustration and try coloring several times.
There is at least one highlight scene I want to draw in an arc. I create a story toward the scene.
I don't draw a person who is just posing seriously for a camera since I can't grasp his emotions.
When I create a story of a chapter, I ask my characters, "What will you do this week?". Then the story emerges itself.
I keep in mind that I should submit 3 times more fulfilling episodes than normal manga. I want my audience to be satisfied even if they've read only one chapter.
If myself as a kid enjoys the manga, kids these days can enjoy it, too.
source: "Manga Nou no Kitaekata" (How to train Manga Mind) (2010)
Huh, so that means that oda has missed 71 issues of shonen jump (72 with next weeks) since one piece started in 97.

This is probably the most interesting post on Arlong Park (for me).

Wow this is great stuff! Thanks Sandman!
Every little color spread Oda does has some sort of realistic charm to them and this is the reason why.
Hopefully the steep slope of breaks doesn't continue to get any steeper, hahaha.

I wanna buy the book in Japan so that I can learn how to draw OP style.
Where does that image of the mugiwaras came from?:ninja::shocked:
I've got "Jump Ryu Oda" today. There are 3 pages of Oda's interviews, but most of which were already known.
Some trivia:
Oda: I practiced my drawing skill watching Disney's animation films such as "Peter Pan".
Oda: Disney's art style was awesome back in the day when they were producing handmade animations. I watched "Little Mermaid" frame by frame and drew all characters and face expressions that impressed me."
At first, Oda didn't intend to draw Senor Pink's past. Editor was moved when he heard the background of Senor in the meeting with Oda. His past is now popular among audience.
Before Oda started ONE PIECE, editor Kushima told him that none of his female characters are cute, which shocked Oda most. Oda couldn't sleep at that night.
Oda rarely takes a break holiday, but he meets his friends and manga teachers when Weekly Shonen Jump has double issues.
Oda usually sleeps at 2 (night) and wakes up at 5 (morning)…
Some pics. The total length of the DVD video is nearly 1 hour. I hope someone will upload the whole video sooner or later.

Oda:- A story behind the illustration is important. For example, when I draw a illustration in which strawhats are playing cards, I specify who are in (dis)advantageous position.

It is a calendar illustration that was included in chapter 394 in Weekly Shonen Jump issue 4-5 on 26 December 2005.

Oda has drawn/written lots of sad/moving backstories, wonder why he didn't intend to draw this one.
Thank you sandman once again
EDIT: do you know if Oda is speaking in the vid?
Lets hope someone can add subtitles at some stage
Wow! It's always cool to see Oda's work station and home. He has some cool figures and a really cool bathroom.
With the notebooks he has on his table I wonder if we will get a whole arc on Whole Cake Island? It's something I never actually thought about. Still, Oda sure is an interesting guy. Thanks for the post Sandman!
