Chapter 790: "Heaven and Earth"

I can't wait to know what DD's eyes look like. Will they be mismatched?
maybe he has no eyes. Just endless holes of despair and fury
-
Doubt we'll see his eyes, since he's probably going to be in dream land for a while. Gomu Gomu no Sleeping Pill Fist!
If he stays awake even after this, then he deserves to win and become a new main character.

@Bartholemew:
A good chapter, that is on its own.
However, looking at the whole context I have quite some problems with it. Mostly due to the potrayal of Doffy during this arc. Considering all the talk in this chapter about being a ruler and manipulating people, I'm seriously pissed at how terrible Doffy actually was at ruling and manipulating people. Instead of backing up his position as a ruler, as a conqueror, he behaved like a hostage-taker the last 40+ chapters. He was supposed to have a devilish charisma. In chapter 700 the term charisma felt two times in regards to him and then we had Luffy's interaction with him showing his charisma by ketting others go at 'his pace'. (Not that Luffy made it too difficult at that situation, though.)
This chapter and its final talk between Luffy and Doffy had worked so much better, if the previous happenings in the arc would actually back up the spoken words.
For me this definitely is the most disappointing OP arc because Doffy's performance flat out ruined it. Glad that it's over…
There's more ways to rule and manipulate besides Charisma. He got cornered rather early, so he needed to try another way.
-
It's done! It's freaking DONE. I'm so happy.
Last chapter was a complete buzzkill to me. It was the worst chapter in this arc and sort of drove all the flaws of it home. So, I'm happy the fight's done.
That said, this felt just like another K.O to me. It was just another huge Luffy punch. There was nothing special to it. Shows how much the chapter-end "cool" finisher has been abused especially Post-TS. Doflamingo's techniques were really freaking cool, though.
Also, this was the most cliché villain-hero dialog ever. There was nothing interesting said about either Luffy's nor Doflamingo's characters. It's exactly the direction I didn't want Doflamingo's character to go. I keep thinking about Corazon calling Doflamingo a monster since birth and I don't like that kind of stuff at all. It's boring standard villain stuff and Doflamingo veered away from that solely for the fact that he had a understandable reason for doing things, yet he was still very awful. If we're supposed to see Doflamingo as a standard villain at this point one of the most interesting things about this arc has been ruined.
Yeah, the enemy of God thing is kind of interesting, I guess, but there's nothing else besides that. A very big part of feeling satisfaction didn't come from the emotional investment to things going on, it came from the relief that it's over.
It was also nice to see room for improvement for Luffy emphasized once again.
Rebecca still crying, though, ugh, no, stop it already. Why does Oda have the need to focus on that? At this point you could remove Rebecca from all of this and nothing would change. She has had no arc or no real purpose. It's the worst kind of character writing.

You know it's a crappy arc when the biggest topic of discussion the past few months of been what the eyes of the arc's antagonist look like.
-
Jeez, finally.
So long, Tanjiahdo Lofulamingo, you will not be missed (Along with your arc). -
You know it's a crappy arc when the biggest topic of discussion the past few months of been what the eyes of the arc's antagonist look like.
Or it's because we've never seen him without them on.
If you're going to engage in some Dressrosa bashing then at least find a valid point first.
-
I don't think Oda will show us Doflamingo's eyes. Some characters have strong phisical characteristics that Oda never changes. I think Mingo's glasses is one of those.
Just like Brook's eyes. We first saw his as a skeleton with black round sockets for eyes. Then, in the flashback, instead of showing his eyes, Oda gave his black round shades that didn't make him much different from the image we already had of him.
Mingo's shades are broken be I guess he won't show us his eyes. The mistery is part of his character.Luffy broke strings by inflating himself with Gear 4th while Zoro and Fujitora coudn't cut the plotcage. Wow. Either Luffy is very strong or Oda kinda lost track of what he was doing here….
-
Jeez, finally.
So long, Tanjiahdo Lofulamingo, you will not be missed (Along with your arc).I really wanna know where people come up with names like this.. WHY?
-

That is a valid point. Talking about what a characters eyes look like and that being 50-80% of the conversation for several months shows that there is nothing else to talk about but some meaningless trivial thing that doesnt matter. And I made a post earlier with better points about why this arc was a disaster once Oda stopped showing half of the crew.
-
At least Oda finally explained why Doffy didn't use parasite on Gear 4th Luffy. It seems like he needs a rather stationary (or in Jozu's case, a target that doesn't weave) target to use it on and strong armament haki seems to enable people to break free of parasite. This heavily implies that Luffy>Jozu.

I really wanna know where people come up with names like this.. WHY?
From shitty/literal translations.

@Don:
You know that this whole charisma-thing during that chapter was just for the joke, right.
Doffy isn´t a guy who persuades people with his charming persona.
He stated himself, that he thinks of others as low-lifes, barely worth enough to exist for his pleasure/to control them, afterall he was the man behind the auction house^^
So he never gave a shit what people thought about him, as long as they weren´t necessary for him in a way, but you think he was supposed to be a charismatic leader, lol.
Guess he tricked at least you there, but he was just playing a role as their leader and those who might have seen behind that facade were quickly killed or turned into toys.
It was actually the whole point of this arc, to showcase that Doffy was a tyrann who ruled them by making them believe he was a savior and everyone thinking otherwise was made quiet–-ergo that he is a terrible leader, who just put up an act for the people of Dressrosa so that he can do his underground business in a seemingly peaceful country.
He ruled by brute force and trickery, once that was uncovered he showed his real face and began to kill off everyone.
Otherwise he could have just sweet-talked Fujitora and the people on Dressrosa with his charisma you think?...wait, maybe that´s the reason Fuji was so passive during this arc. :-OEr, Charisma is a pretty big part of Doflamingos character. At the marine meeting, he was specifically referred to as the man with the "devils charisma". Add on top of that the fact that he has Conquerors Haki, and the blind devotion from his crew because he exudes Kingliness, and Doffy has definetely been portrayed as being a force of attraction for people (insert lowbrow joke here).
And don't forget, his country absolutely adored him, and he was not being Crocodile style "whatever filthy peasants" ("kya, you say that but we love ya anyway") aloof about it. -
Seems like Oda stretched certain developments this arc just so he could have the timing right for chapter 800 and the developments he seeks to include in it =/.
Even if it is 10 chapters away, I am really looking forward to chapter 800.
-
From shitty/literal translations.
Don't think so, really. Haven't seen the original raw (chapter 233, right?), but I've always seen Doflamingo written in Katakana. I can understand Dofulamingo (even though it's like freaking flamingo), but where the hell did they take the "Lo" from? And I don't even want think about Tanjiahdo, it's such a mess…

When I think of charisma I think of it as one person actively trying to please someone else with their own charm. As we know, Doffy doesn't give a shit about anyone. So I'd say what Doffy has is more of a case of "cult of personality".
-
Wow, I'm kind of surprised at the lukewarm reaction to this chapter and the fight as a whole. I thought this chapter was great, and the fight was enjoyable and satisfying overall, especially considering just how much it took to actually take Doflamingo down.
I know people's opinions on this arc tend to be kind of negative, and I can definitely see why, but personally I've enjoyed it. It definitely has its problems and I wouldn't call it a favorite of mine, but there's a lot to love here, I'd say. Still, I agree that it went on for far too long, so it's good that it seems to finally be time to wrap things up now.
-
I feel like Doffy is still awake but barely alive and he is going to have a rant about something with Luffy. Then Law will stab him in the heart!
Then everyone will be saying"Doffy isn't dead people can survive being stabbed in the heart" I i will kindly tell them to stfu

It's because Doflamingo basically defeated Luffy when Doflamingo was already gravely injured by law and Luffy was teleported in by Law. I don't see what is to like about Luffy losing and its hard to feel good about a protagonist winning a battle that was never a fair fight. Luffy was spitting up blood fighting an enemy that wasnt even good enough to be part of Doflamingo's crew.
We were shown Luffy's gear 4, but it is useless against strong enemies and makes him useless after 10 minutes. Luffy wasn't badass, but Doflamingo was. I can't say, "I can't wait to see Luffy use Gear 4 in the future". I don't think anyone wants to see it anymore now that we can see its not enough to do anything and ensures Luffy will lose the fight.
-
Forgive me if I sound a little judgmental, but did we read the same chapter?
Just what on earth does it take to please half of you people?!
I for one thought it was amazing!
Some will never be satisfied no matter what happens, they are the glass half empty people of the world.
Liked the chapter a lot, plus the finale was good, that king Kong is an island buster which makes me think he may end up using that same attack on Fishman Island.
Would definitely shatter the island and I think it would smash the Noah (giant ship) to pieces as well.
As for the dress up at the beginning of the issue I think Zoro is meant to be Bavaria in Germany as he is wearing the right clothes and colours and Franky is Swedish/Swiss mainly due to how he has his hair in the picture. It definitely doesn't scream China at all.

Luffy's lost many battles before, only to win against the same opponent latter - hell, people are pointing out the Alabasta parallels constantly, and Luffy lost to Crocodile twice. There was a lot of back-and-forth in this fight, and it even seemed like Luffy won a few chapters ago before Doflamingo got back up.
Gear 4 seemed pretty impressive to me; he pretty much dominated Doflamingo while using it, and it was ultimately what defeated him. That seems far from useless to me. Let's not forget that this is Doflamingo we're talking about - not only is he a Warlord, but he's come across as the most powerful villain Luffy's come up against. Gear 4 may not be enough for every villain, sure, but then again Gear 3 wasn't enough to defeat Lucci, and even Gear 2 was similar to how Gear 4 was portrayed here: Luffy struggles without it, starts to have an advantage, is in trouble when it wears off, but then is ultimately able to win once he's able to use it again.
-
I think I'm kind of growing tired of One Piece. :/
That's sad. I've been reading it weekly for years now. Since mid-Sabaody. There is something wrong if I'm lukewarm about the defeat of a Big Bad built up for like 10 years. It's the same effect as Fishman Island had in a way - except I didn't mind that as much because we didn't really have something very specific to expect from FI, just that if must be pretty great if it's built up for so long.
-
From what I see, King Kong Gun is just Gear 4th only, not having Gear 3rd in it. Luffy blows more air into his muscles to make his fist become even bigger than that, not into his bone.

great chapter
and finally match end -

When I saw him blow into his shoulder, that's what I thought too, but
The conversation between Luffy and Rayleigh here makes me think it really was Gear 3+4, it just was ambiguously illustrated.
You could argue "thumb=gear 3", but before this, "forearm=gear 4", so what's shoulder, eh? Given the conversation, I'd say it was bone this time, to add to gear 4. -
someone needs to write an entire guide for all the shirts and their meanings

You are harping on one thing I said when it was a combination of things. It wasn't a fair fight plain and simple. Luffy was a newbie pirate in the New world when fighting Crocodile. That was way before I started reading this manga in 2007. So in 10 years Luffy has gone from defeating a Warlord that was fighting Doflamingo at Marineford to losing to a warlord 2v1 with the help of another warlord and only winning after playing hide as seek and again getting help from another warlord. So now we know Luffy is not strong enough to defeat someone as strong/weak as Doflamingo. So who can we look forward to luffy defeating in the next 3-4 years? Other Supernovas? It certainly won't be Big Mom or Kaido. I don't see myself getting excited seeing Luffy fighting Supernovas or going to Wano. I could care less about Wano and that sidestory has been one of the shitty parts of these past 2 arcs. And now we also know that all of Ussopp's fights in the future are going to be pathetic and a big running gag of how pathetic he is instead of what we saw on Fishman Island.
-
I AM NOT SATISFIED by this chapter.
Its not what I was waiting for!
-
I'd say we'll get about 2-3 aftermath chapters (i.e. Fuji finally stepping up and taking the Doffy family in custody , King Riku and his annoying bunch taking over the throne again, the obligatory party) and then someone will remember that Sanji's missing and the scene will switch there.
Or someone unexpected shows up and wreaks havoc. Similar to what happened in TB.
As for the fight's conclusion– while there have been some nice moves throughout this long, looong fight, I cannot say that I've felt any real tension or that I've really enjoyed it. It could've been better, surely, but can't be changed now. It's finally over and that's it.
something like this.
Also I must say that I am surprised that this awakening of the DF exists and Luffy doesnt know how to do it…
-
If king kong is the solution spoken about, after kong gun was ineffective what did luffy do that allowed him to barely survive? Since by the way he and rayleigh were speaking, rayleigh was not on the scene. Its during this conversation that ray's advise to come up with a better way, even if he used gear 3 it does not negate the fact that gear 4 is stil in use. Which is putting too much stress on him . Plus come up with an alternative for when you get in a similar condition in my opinion is after luffy did what ever he did to survive against the beast that kong gun was useless against.
But as someone said its very luffy like to go bigger and harder.
-
When did Luffy find the time to put his sandals back on?
-
@Eat:
When did Luffy find the time to put his sandals back on?
LoL I wonder if this one will be corrected. They magically appeared in the Leo Bazooka chapter I think.
Let's say Law used Shambles again. -
There's more ways to rule and manipulate besides Charisma. He got cornered rather early, so he needed to try another way.
I also think his desrcibed charisma is just boased chatter from his Family, Dolfo demonstrated a lot of sociopathic tendencies but was not very charismatic from what I saw? Then again we don't have the panels from when they say charismatic so I'm not really sure what Bear is talking about haha. Doflo probably also didn't envision the Sugar losing at all, too arrogant. As you said, he was unexpectedly cornered, no amount of charisma is going to bring all the toys freed to Doflo's side

Spitting up blood really don't mean much and he was not even trying during that fight.
How much times did don spit up blood when he was fighting luffy and it did no real damage.
Luffy destroy Don in gear 4 all he has to do is get better at controling it just like he did with gear 2 and 3. -

First of all, you're definitely wrong about Usopp, and that would be exactly what he's done from the beginning so why would you oppose it… Crocodile doesn't use haki and is just as arrogant as Doflo. Doflo could string him and he would he stuck unable to break free, plain and simple, not even close to a match, not that I care that much since power levels don't really matter in this managa AT ALL.
Speaking of power levels not mattering, your entire argument is invalidated. This manga has never been about aluffy becoming the "strongest fighter", this isn't DBZ. Luffy's goal is to become Pirate King, meaning all he has to do is reach One Piece and then afterwards save the world apparently. Now, how unless I'm planning on reading another typical shonen formula manga for 700 chapters with redundancy rampant in every arc, then I will continue to be happy when Oda switches things up to make fights more interesting as the series continues. No ill will is meant by all this, just want you to look at the series with a more open mind. -

And don't forget, his country absolutely adored him, and he was not being Crocodile style "whatever filthy peasants" ("kya, you say that but we love ya anyway") aloof about it.I don´t deny with my post, that Doffy has charisma and that it is an important part of him.
It´s more like his charisma wasn´t the heavenly gift (as CoC might be supposed to, but we don´t want to mix his charisma with CoC now) he could have used to turn the tides again after his true face was revealed.
Being a guy, who has his hands in so many businesses, he sure has a lot of influence and by that charisma to other characters.
Same for celestrial dragons, where he is more or less a part of, that´s why he got this title in the first place.(IMO)
But like you said, he has the devils charisma, which means he tricks people with his representation, like he did in Dressrosa.
So obviously the people "adored" him, because he presented himself in a holy light and as long as you didn´t question stuff you actually had a good life there. (real life has examples you sure are aware off)
Non the less it was an act, done so that he can control the country as he wishes and do whatever he pleases in the shadows.
For his family and those who adore him (like Belamy) he sure was able to bind them with his charisma, but to reach a greater population, Doffy sure was aware that he can´t control them with his charisma alone, let alone many would have fallen for it. (the joke in 700 was that Luffy fall for it, but because of false reasons…like earlier the people of Dressrosa who had a false impression of him, that he created)
He gathered people around him, who saw him as their savior, even in his childhood days, so yeah, here his charisma did play a big part of his character.
But the point is, that he still wasn´t a good ruler, even while having CoC, because his true charisma is more shocking to "normal" people and Doffy was aware of this. (maybe thought they were such low-lifes that they don`t understand or can´t handle it)
So naturally his charisma works on people who have the "evil seed" in them, but it ain´t working on the "normal" population of Dressrosa, or else i don´t see why he had to hide his true face and had to stage such a big act.
After people realized what kind of person he really is, he wasn´t able to use his charisma to retune them, because most of them ain´t following a devil when they have the choice, which was shown after a while, when the population stopped hunting the stars and worked together to stop the birdcage/save people. -

This is not a tournament, it's not a 1x1 contest. It's really not about having fair victories, mainly when Luffy is pretty much the person with the least grudges against Doflamingo out of everyone out there, so why it should be his victory and his alone? One Piece arcs are never about only Luffy/Strawhats getting revenge, but about a whole city/kingdom getting back on the person who always oppressed them. So while it is Luffy ultimately defeating the big bad guy, there are ALWAYS others taking part in the fight so that victory actually comes. It's never about Luffy winning on 1x1, it's not something new to this arc.
But I am one of the guys who disliked the chapter. Actually, I think Oda is reusing his old formulas way too much. Everything about Dressrosa seems like it was done before (almost everything in Alabasta) and so far nothing justifies it as a homage and ends up feeling just like lack of originality. It is getting old, and some of us just can't get hyped by seeing the same things happening again and again and again with just new faces.
-
Can't tell if that's foreshadowing or not. B/c gear 4 + gear 3 doesn't seem that be a better solution to undo the stress it has on his body.
We'll find out next chapter if there is no backlash of him being completely out of haki. I don't really see it being a solution though since he's just stacking Gear 4 with Gear 3. If this wasn't what Rayleigh was talking about then that would make it foreshadowing of Luffy having something else that doesn't drain all of his haki like crazy like Gear 4 does.

Actually Doffy was overwhelmingly strong to Luffy before he used Gear4.
With Gear4 activated Luffy took complete control of the fight and was overwhelming Doffy, so that he was almost done for…but as it`s always is in mangas, a great technique has a great drawback.
Instead of giving Doffy another final blow with Gear4 his haki wear off and Doffy was able to recover a bit...non the less Gear4 showed that it´s the option Luffy needed to fight top-tier fighter, but i agree that Gear4 alone will never be enough to defeat a yonkou. -
When I saw him blow into his shoulder, that's what I thought too, but

You could argue "thumb=gear 3", but before this, "forearm=gear 4", so what's shoulder, eh? Given the conversation, I'd say it was bone this time, to add to gear 4.No no no, Bone = Gear 3rd and Muscle = Gear 4th.
Luffy blows air into the muscles in his shoulder, which are connect to the other muscle parts of his body.
Luffy can't blow air into his bone, because:
-His muscles in Gear 4th state are too big + thick, and they covering up all of his bones.
-With Gear 3rd, Luffy always blow air into his thumb.. why not this time? It's because this is not Gear 3rd, not his bone, it's his muscle. -
Yeah I agree with Ping. Rayliegh told Luffy that G4th isn't enough and takes a huge toll. So LUffy uses more G4th. That's how stubborn he is.
-
From that colour spread, it seems that Zoro's goal in life after best swordsman is go to Germany.

If you're not excited about Luffy fighting other Supernova or going to Wano, then ok. Keep in mind there's much more to be excited about in this series than Luffy fighting stronger and stronger people, though. I'm excited for those to things because the settings, interactions, and characters could be really fun and interesting, not just because I want to see Luffy beat someone powerful.
No, Luffy isn't strong enough for Big Mom or Kaidou on his own yet, but who expected him to be? That would be ridiculous considering how early in the New World we are now. Besides, Luffy is constantly getting stronger in the series, so it's not like this fight is necessarily the strongest he can be when he encounters an Emperor.
And how exactly do we know what all of Usopp's fights are going to be? What, because his contribution to this arc involved a gag? Even though he wowed everyone with a seemingly impossible shot in arguably one of the best chapters in this arc? Come on, man.
Finally, as has been pointed out many times on this forum, talking about power levels in One Piece is kinda silly anyway.

You give way too much importance to 1-on-1 conditions.
Never mind that through a good deal of the fight, it was actually a 2 vs. 3, with Doula being assisted by Trebol and Bellamy, who both gave hits to Law and Luffy respectively. It certainly wasn't a fair fight.

I think the flags that seem to pop out at you from each character are what represents the country which their costumes are inspired from. Robin in that Indian get up, I think I had a nosebleed. Brook is UK, Nami is USA, I think Sanji is France, Ussop is Brazil, Luffy is Japan, Chopper is Canada, Edit: Franky's is China, can't believe I said Singapore loool, Zoro's is a tad bit ambiguous for me too but could be Netherlands.
Zoro is drinking from a beer stein and wearing Lederhosen. So Germany or Austria. But because it's Oda, Germany.
So I've just figured out which Costume Chopper is wearing and it is none other than Hungary, as I first thought that flag was Italian but it's rotated a bit and it's actually Hungary's flag. Yes, it does snow a shit ton in Hungary too. Mystery solved, now we know all of them.
Yes the deer dressed like an Inuit in a snowstorm is clearly based on Hungary and not Canada. Makes perfect sense. Not.

The end of arcs always introduce new over arching plot. Can't wait for the next few chapters to see what's in store. To Green Bit!

Oda probably associates Austria with classical musicians anyway.

Yeah based on his Brooke comment. But now that Brooke is a rocker he's like some sort of 70's British dude in Oda's mind I suppose.
Sad to connect Britain with rock when they've been damn near comatose/dead in that genre for like almost twenty goddamn years lol. All history by now.
