Oda has been very fond of this arc of constantly updating us as to what everyone is doing. Even the small, insignificant ones. And it has been at the expence of showing longer battles. Even Marineford only had small glimpses to show how everyones farring.
Chapter 788: "My Fight"
-
-
In any case, here's my guess on how Manshelly's powers work: it's been said that it takes up her life force to heal, so I'm guessing that the more life she puts into it, the more injuries it heals, and the longer it lasts. Manshelly's probably doing the minimal necessary to heal en masse without killing herself, and the dandehealions are not strong enough to heal really bad injuries, like Law's and Luffy's. We'll probably see her land in front of them next chapter and give them a proper healing.
-
For some who just complains about people not trying to go for Doflamingo, look at it this way:
Fujitora - can't directly attack Doflamingo (still a shichibukai).
Zoro - knows Luffy is fighting Dofla, didn't know Luffy got weakened and needs rest/time. Trust your captain right?
Samurais - also didn't know Luffy needs rest (though both were useless the whole time).
Gladiators/Marines/etc - already lost to the officers, will you fight against the main boss after that? Also didn't know Luffy needs rest. They have 2 options, try to stop the birdcage (only moving in 1 direction/inanimate) or try to stop Doflamingo (main boss, shichibukai, underlings already defeated you). I think trying to stop the birdcage has a higher chance of being achieved than defeating Dofla right now.
Burgess - only motive is getting DF powers, maybe he is cocky enough to think the birdcage will not kill him. Dunno.
Sabo - facing Burgess. Action really depends on what Burgess does. If he stops attacking Luffy, pretty sure Sabo will go after Doflamingo. Also talked to Luffy about him having his hands full on Burgess, and Luffy confidently said he will defeat Doflamingo.
Who else did I miss?
-
I know this was supposed to be one of those inspirational, hopeful moments but the story has been so stretched that I just find it dull right now. And the birdcase is ridiculous. Way to overpower Dofla. It makes absolutley no sense why just one of his random technique is able to match the strength of an admira, zoro and gazzilion more powerhouses. They really should hire an editor to keep Oda in check so that things like this don't happen again
-
Would you rather see more extended action of a fight that wouldn't actually go anywhere, or progression for pretty much every character in the arc?
Yes, I would much rather have more of a fight that's been hyped up this whole arc, than a whole chapter dedicated to a bunch of characters saying "We can do it mates!", even though several of them could probably take out a heavily wounded Doflamingo right now.
-
Where is Kyros ? He isn't going to ruin Viola's scene, right ?
-
@Uncanny:
Fujitora - can't directly attack Doflamingo (still a shichibukai).
Is that so? Then why he could revoke Law's title based on this his answer, regarding him being luffy's ally or not? Why can't he revoke mingo's title equally based on his genocidal tendencies, including now killing all marines and any world government official?
@Uncanny:
That "Dunno" is the most relevant part. We also don't know why 2 people choose to fight each other knowing they are going to die. Hell, I don't know even where they are fighting since there is only little space to hold people.
-
Doflamingo is so mediocre as a villain that Crocodile looks charismatic compared to him
-
Well dressrosa arc is somewhat disappointing arc by Oda standards.Too many convenient powers.Oda wants to show new world is insane but for that he used some plot devices which made no sense.
-
The puppet girl– She touches you and you become a puppet who cannot fight back and is forgetten by everyone forever . It works against CoC level oppononents as well. Think some fighter of DoFlamingo level having it.He just keeps doing 1 touch ko WhiteBeard,Roger,Shanks,Akainu and all .And future opponents have no idea of it since everyone forgets .
This was required to create the whole dressrosa amnesia plot. That plot was good , but plot device bad.
Maybe if it atleast had 3 fruit users , 1st person by touching makes people into a toy which can still fightback, 2nd person if he defeates opponent can make him obey set of rules 3rd person can make everyone forget about toy unless he is defeated. This might have been more plausible. -
Bird Cage-- Zoro/Admiral who are supposed to with COA able to cut anything can't think of even touching the birdcage. It is not even DoFlamingo actively controlling it and adding COA to it. It is just indestructible no explanation. It is more powerful that even Do Flamingo is.
DoFlamino could just summon a birdcage and destroy anyone including the Emporers. No counter. He just waits outside it. Even if lets say Yonkou levels can push it from contracting still they cannot move out coz BirdCage is indestructable magic
This however created the timelimit plot. The no one can escape or communicate plot. That was good but birdcage was bad.
Maybe if birdcage was assembled/manufactured in seastone and DoFlamingo family kept it ready for emergencies it might make sense. It could be explained using OP world science. But as a DF power which is more powerful than even Doflamingo or Zoro with COA makes no sense.
It might had made sense if DoFlamingo had to actively maintain it using COA which makes him unable to fight. But that would not result in a big Luffy vs Endboss fight.
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
I hope future arcs don't keep going to Toriko level of exaggerated powers. Oda done the Whitebeard war arc without making powers of the characters going overboard. Hope he revisits before writing future arcs.

Dayum, the hate is much stronger than I expected for this chapter. I expected people to not like it, since it wasn't the finisher chapter and focused on points people don't normally care for, but this is crazy. Guess this is what happens with arc fatigue after so long, little things become big things, and big things become the bane of existence.
Anyway, I liked the chapter. It was nice seeing that the citizens decided that they had to do something if they hoped to get out of the nightmare. Mansherry's power is still a bit annoying, but at least there is a setback with the one she is using. Hopefully there is a setback for the regular power besides just loss of lifespan. Fujitora coming in and pretending not to know who he was helping was pretty cool. He wants Luffy to finish the fight, but he needs to do something to look somewhat convincing. Viola facing Doflamingo was a nice little scene, and I hope that Rebecca does something next chapter (I giver a 50/50 chance). Nothing big happened, but I liked everyone coming to the plate to stop the birdcage. I don't mind the birdcage being this strong, but that's why I think an explanation of it would be nice, since lots of people are complaining about it. Best we can hope for is an SBS on it.
As for the complaints of not attacking Doflamingo, and stopping the cage instead, I think most of it works. A lot of the people are on barrowed time from Mansherry, so while they could fight for a little bit, they would collapse soon. Depending on where they are located, the time might've gone out if they tried going to the battlefield instead of the cage. Regular marines and citizens would not be effective. If a bunch of gladiators were wiped out, the citizens would be slaughtered easily and the birdcage would've come in. Fujitora, like I said earlier, wants Luffy to finish the fight. Zoro doesn't get into other peoples fights, especially his captains fight. The problem is that while some could've held Doflamingo off (and at best a few seconds by how things are going) all these people of various strength were needed on various sides to hold the birdcage, so there's not much that can be done. This means that Rebecca and Viola are the last line of defense for the next minute.
I've been iffy on the birdcage aspect. It's been cool visually, and the idea is pretty cool. However, it feels somewhat cheap in keeping people in with lack of explanation. That said, I did like this chapter and how all these various people joined together for a common cause. Before all this, everyone had their own agenda, but now they are united by a common cause. It keeps with the theme of how various factions at odds before come together for a cause, and I think will allude to how the world will change greatly by the change from the worst generation.
It's too bad many have lost the will to care about this arc, because I still think it's pretty good overall. Hopefully the next chapter or two will come the finishing blow, and many of you can put this behind you. Seems I'm in a minority of liking the recent stuff, and having liked the post-time skip stuff overall.

I forgot that dagama must also be up again so why viola and Rebecca only thought about facing doffy doesn't make sense. It's like Oda suddenly had the poor idea to make every top tier fighter busy till luffy steps in.
It's like they are one tiny step away to finish the birdcage but they can't see it because of plot blindness. -
Is that so? Then why he could revoke Law's title based on this his answer, regarding him being luffy's ally or not? Why can't he revoke mingo's title equally based on his genocidal tendencies, including now killing all marines and any world government official?
That "Dunno" is the most relevant part. We also don't know why 2 people choose to fight each other knowing they are going to die. Hell, I don't know even where they are fighting since there is only little space to hold people.
Agree about Burgess, we can only guess why he still chose to hunt DFs. But for Fujitora, he had his reasons - the conversations with Doflamingo/people on the plateau, if you can remember it. Also, he didn't know the SHs personally, if they were good or bad, and a Shichibukai having an ALLIANCE (not underlings) with another pirate (who declared war against the WG) is a red flag for them. Still at work, but I'll try to back it up later.
Edit: As I've siad, Sabo's actions depends on Burgess, as his main priority is protecting Luffy.
-

You really don't know
-
Did they really have to show Becca crying again?
-
DoFlamingo should just fly around get one of the magic drops and troll everyone with more birdcages. I guess he could create a mini birdcage each around Sabo,Fuji,Zoro and Luffy . 1 min and they all die to the powa of the indestructible bird cages. I think he actually ate birdcage birdcage no mi and using threads is one of its subpowers.
-
You'd think Fujitora's antigravity would be enough to push away the cage.
Did they really have to show Becca crying again?
I legit was pondering last week what would happen and I had the outrageous thought that Rebbecca would attempt to stop DD. After seeing a panel of her running last chapter towards something, I thought she would pull off a BIG MOVE that she couldn't use before b/c of her fears of hurting ppl and delay DD enough….nope. TEARS, just tears.

Are people really saying characters that get beat by don henchmen can go and beat don that don't seem to be wobbling anymore. -
i never thought dressrosa arc will be worse then fishman island arc damm what a shame
-
Yeah, The only PlotHole (i've sealed my fate saying this …!!!!!!) in this arc IMO would be how ridiculously strong bird cage is. I mean we have an admiral in it, 2nd in command of the revolutionaries and one of the BB captains (plus
a shit ton more ...) and there is nothing they can do about it??!?!? They ARE slowing it down but ... . Sabo maybe busy with burgess and not focused on the birdcage which is extremely improbable as it is trying to FREAKIN KILL
EVERYONE IN THE ISLAND and issho's meteorites just get cut but is that the extent of their powers?!?!? I am extremely against power levels in one piece (it's not dragonball!!!) but making an indestructible string that can't be cut
by zorro and issho and etc. AND not using that in his fight against luffy (he could make and armor out of it)?!?!?
Also, lets not forget where Birdcage came from ------> doffy clone, AND who cut the head of that clone which is supposedly made up of bordcage ?!?!??! fucking kyros. WTF!?!?! so kyros can cut birdcage but no one else can??!?1
and for some reason he is not helping people struggling to cut it?!??!
This can't be it. The only explanation that I could come up with is that because doffy can use awakening and change his surroundings into strings, maybe he has a reservoir of seastone which he made the birdcage out of.
That might explain it's in destructiveness (we have never seen any seastone break so it might be unbreakable ??!?!?) and the fact that the factory is not getting all sliced up while hitting the birdcage.
I would really like some clarification on this from oda or any of you guys.
-
I just realized that the German translation of this chapter's name would be "Mein Kampf"…
-
@mario:
i never thought dressrosa arc will be worse then fishman island arc damm what a shame
I don't terrible of an arc, I'm saving final criticism for reading of the whole arc in one sitting. BUT I will say that Oda tried to do wayyyy too much in one arc without enough SHs as the focus.
-
I enjoy your enthusiasm. Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?
Haha, no I haven't. But that quote is so befitting for someone nicknamed Joker.
So, let's see Viola is a dancer (or can dance) and Doffy has his rape face ready.
I predict he's going to use parasite and make Viola twirl around and do the Flamenco style dance (Yes, this is Doflamingo's favorite dance) while slashing herself with the knife she drew and as she twirls about blood spurts around. As she slashes herself her dress comes undone in certain place, and that cleavage… (lol, I'm kidding) and then he drops that line as she dances on helplessly "Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?" Would be an iconic scene and he could kill her slowly to draw out the heroes, namely Luffy. Cavendish comes to save the day, possibly as Hakuba. And rides off with Farul (his horse who temporarily recovered from Mansherry's fairy dust).
-
Doffy controlled simultaneously a few thousand threads to create the Birdcage in 3 seconds.
Doffy can grow back a cut thread easily, even the full cage.
(One could even argue that both ends of a cut thread can tie themselves back together…or not!) -

That is if they can beat don .
Are people really saying characters that get beat by don henchmen can go and beat don that don't seem to be wobbling anymore. He is heavily wounded and his awakening stomps the minor gladiators but imagine barthos barrier protecting someone like sai against doffy. Maybe i'm not getting the shounen brink of death stuff but sai alone or with bartholomeo would be enough to finish doffy. If that's too much for you they can definitely buy the few minutes luffy needs. The rest could have slowed the cage enough for the last exchange between luffy and doffy.
We'retalking about fresh fighters vs a heavily damaged doffy.
-
This seems like another of those chapters that are necessary to show for plot purposes, but are still so boring and frustrating when you want actual substance… I can't be mad at Oda but I can't help but feel underwhelmed. Oh well, at least next chapter will almost certainly be interesting. Also I'm wondering if Viola got beaten already, or if Rebecca is crying just to cry as usual?
-
Oh why has no one of those who have nothing to do (e.g.marines ordered to do nothing, king riku or even rebecca which would have made her a bit more usefull than being reduced to a crybaby) come up with the idea of filling the factory with the old and really weak citizens?
-
I don't mind a slow paced arc, but the OPness of the birdcage is ridiculous. Worst chapter I've read in a long time. It takes a lot for me to dislike one :/
-

So how could Sai beat doffy who strings are strong enough to block a luffy gear 4 attack .
Don has had 6 mins of rest , a character who got hit by a move that destroy his insides and counter shock and was up and about right after .
A character for you to even hurt have to hit with the power gear 4 move while avoid all his string
Also the only reason the other gladiators can even stop the cage is because bart barrier .It's not like the other gladiators even know how much time luffy has to recover .
They seeing cage closing in faster and first thing they try to do is stop it so people won't die .The whole idea that don weaker now means anyone can kill or get better of him makes no sense.
WB who was on death door worst than don was able to wash off BB and hurt Akainu . -
I know right! He even has a combo technique with Trebol :ninja:
I can't believe there hasn't been a spider's Web combo with Trebol's sticky icky abilities that would be awesome.
-

Exactly my thought. I don't mind these chapters. It's the fucking birdcage that it totally destroying the arc for me and ruining my "One Piece" experience.
-
I know it has been ten years but… does Viola call the guy "Doffy" ?
-

And they bought time. Why would Sai or anyone else not even buy more even if they're finished after that?
Even Rebecca tried to attack doffy. Why wouldn't much more powerful fighters like sai try that? They could have stalled doffy enough for luffy to finish him before the birdcage crushes everyone. The rest could still have pushed and slowed the cage.Someone of them could have at least checked why doffy ain't down. For all they know doffy could ha e won and could be on his way tp slaughter them while they're busy pushing the cage
-
Well, after this arc, Dressrosa is going to be remembered as the worst arc in the series. I liked this chapter and agreed on what most people are saying; I see how this arc is penned out and due to so many characters and most of them are just there. Fujitora could not just fight Doflamingo, Doflamingo could not just parasite Luffy; many plot holes and inconsistents riddled this arc. It's like Oda himself is going through a fatigue or could not get his mind straight when he made so many characters. So let's hope he shakes it off the next arc
-

you do know when Gatz and them said they were buying time that was before don made the bird cage start to close in faster .
Also i ask again how would sai and them even know to buy time in the first place or how much they would need.
They were not there when Gatz came up with the plan , Rebecca attacking don just mean she stupid like usual .The gladiators were trying to stop don from finding and getting to luffy it was not to stop the cage .
Them trying to stop don had nothing to do with the cage and all about saving luffy , the cage is moving faster no matter what they do . -
I trust that Oda probably knows this isn't his best work either. So I give him props for sticking it out at least and not rushing the end.
(Still though, wrap it up man)
-
I've read every post in this thread. I understand and respect all opinions. I won't say I don't like this chapter at all but still it feels like one of the worst of 2015 to me. by far.
I agree with some of you in that no break (if confirmed) next week is the best new today. -
Perona is drawn so beautifully on the cover page, she would be an awesome Strawhat but I'm guessing Mihawk's taken a liking for her. Mihawk x Perona
-
What is Cavendish doing now that Law is with Luffy? Did Law leave him while he fell asleep? Maybe he will protect Viola from Doflamingo. Maybe see Hakuba in action again.
Or maybe Kyros will go after Doflamingo to buy time and save Viola.
Or team up: Kyros and Cavendish vs Doflamingo. Two of the fastest on the island.
-

Yeah I'm with you, if you read some of my recent prediction posts I was hoping this would be Becca chance to do something useful like distract Doffy for enough time for Luffy to heal, which I guess can still happen as a sister tag team and they can fend him off for 1 minute which I guess is an accomplishment. Atleast when Violet cries it's a cool whale themed attack. For the love of Usopp please don't show Becca crying anymore and show her use a double team attack on Doffy (pokemon reference) and redeem her character because if not that's a real shame If she just sits there and cries again.
-

There's so many characters that when one doesn't show up in the chapter there's always a mob asking if they're just sitting on their ass having tea and biscuits.
-
i think i´m going to stay a few weeks without reading, i´m starting to dislike one piece
it´s sooo boring, this is the worse arc ever -
There's so many characters that when one doesn't show up in the chapter there's always a mob asking if they're just sitting on their ass having tea and biscuits.
Except Rebecca, who's best left offscreen.
-
Phew! Close call! Good thing Law didn't waste his limited stamina with the FightingFishes.

I think Doffy will go to kill her and Luffy will stop him. Then finally for the love of god put the f**cker down.
-
Even Pell escaping death seems way more realistic than this whole birdcage
-
About Fujitora using his sword and not his powers to push away the cage…
At least when it's all said and done, and he says "well, it was the least I could do", he'll be telling the truth -
Doflamingo could defeat Aokiji back then, Fujitora alone couldn't surpass a simple string hardened… Luffy will beat Doflamingo.
There you have, Luffy's stronger than the admirals.
Good chapter, Usopp spoke.
-
Oda is great at showing character reactions to this dire situation. That being said the way Luffy is being set up to take down Doflamingo doesn't work for me. Doflamingo is injured, why can't Zoro take him out? Or Fujitora? Yes, I understand the main character has to take down the main bad guy but it should be done in a believable way with minimum plot holes. This is way too forced. Having a straight up Luffy VS Doflamingo fight without this timeout would've been better.
An entire chapter just to push. Oh wow.
